Around the NFC North: 2024 Week 6

You get a win! You get a win! You get a win!

Well, it's not debatable anymore. All of the NFC North teams are at least pretty good. You can say that they played bad teams, and I will detail that below, but when a bad team plays another bad team they don't win by double digits. Each of the NFC North teams has an elite identity on at least one side of the ball. The division winner may be the first team to show that it can be consistently elite on both sides of the ball and not have the worst kicker situation ever.

Bears

The Bears stomped on the Jags, 35-16.

Game Notes

  • Let's get the weak schedule stuff over with first. The Bears have 4 wins and the teams they beat have a combined 4-19 record. Each of the teams has won just one game. The Bears are winning and Caleb Williams looks better each week, but we have to acknowledge that it's against bad teams. They probably won't finish a 6-win team, but they also probably won't be an 11-win team.
  • Speaking of Caleb Williams, the rookie QB was 23/29 for 226 yards, 4 TDs and a pick. He also added 56 yards on the ground. About as good of a performance as you can ask for from a rookie QB.
  • Interestingly, with the league's best 3-man WR rotation all playing, Cole Kmet was the leading receiver with 5 catches for 70 yards and two TDs. Keenan Allen did have a couple of TDs as well.
  • D'Andre Swift has been reading the tweets and obscure blog posts, he went for 91 yards and a TD on 17 carries and had another 28 yards receiving. Let's hope he doesn't keep it up when it comes to the Packers games.
  • The defense held the Jags to 16 points but there were some chinks in the armor - the Jags had four dropped TDs in the game.
  • TJ Edwards had 7 tackles and forced a fumble and Jack Sanborn had a tackle in just ten snaps.

.

Vikings

The Vikings had a bye.

Lions

The Lions crushed the Cowboys, 47-9.

Game Notes

  • Jared Goff had a perfect game. He was 18/25 for 315 yards and three TDs. The Cowboys couldn't get any pressure on him and he carved them up.
  • Goff spread the ball around with six receivers getting at least three catches or 50 yards. This offense isn't like it was last year when Sam LaPorta and the Sun God would combine for like 250 yards. In this game they had just five combined receptions for 89 yards. NFL defenses are trying to take away Lions weapons and finding out that they have a lot more than we thought.
  • The run game hasn't changed. David Montomgery had 80 yards and two TDs on just 12 carries and Jahmyr Gibbs added 63 more. Montgomery signed an extension this week and I think we should acknowledge that the Lions didn't really needs to spend the 12th overall pick on Gibbs, who is the second best RB on this team.
  • The big news on defense is that the team's best player and likely DPOY, Aidan Hutchinson, suffered a horrific compound fracture and is out for the season. The rest of the team's d-line is more run stuffing than pass rushing so it will be interesting to see how they address Hutchinson's absence. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn loves man coverage and you need to generate pressure for that to work. Will he start to blitz more? Will they move to acquired another star edge rusher? Lions fans think they could pull off a Maxx Crosby trade which would be incredibly annoying. If they don't do anything, I can't see how this defense is a top unit.
  • Brian Branch had two picks, six tackles and forced a fumble. Twitter couldn't believe the Packers traded down from the pick he was drfated in. I'm OK with having Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and Karl Brooks instead.

Wow! The noise of the Lions' fans was quite noticeable in Dallas. I felt sorry for McCarthy, but not for the Cowboys. Dallas just seems to be on a steady decline.

LOL, I don't blame the Lions for not taking the Cowboys seriously. The Cowboys are a circus where the actual football game is a sideshow. To top it off, AT&T blurred the scoreboard when things were getting out of hand for the home team. They have no defense and stupidly saddled themselves with Dak's huge contract.

Re Hutchinson, I might be mistaken but I believe his was a multiple fracture not a compound as written above. 'Compound' means the broken edge of a bone pierced the skin; 'multiple' means more than one fracture (which he has).

The bears are riding the high horse right now. They will decline here in the next coming weeks, as with the Vikings. It’s the packers and lions division

I’m with you—I’d rather have Reed, etc, rather than Branch.
The Hutchinson loss may not be catastrophic, but it’s close; like losing a QB. The Lions D was predicted on his play.
…I’m very skeptical the Vikings and Bears are as good as all the so-called experts are claiming.
Go Packers!!!

It does appear Gute will come out ahead on the
Reed vs Branch.
I on the other hand disagree.
He had to replace Amari Rodgers.
But had he grabbed Branch-
The Lions would be weaker.

Also the need at safety was needed.
He signed FAs only to cut them.

He was lucky this years safety class
was the strength of the draft.
I doubt he realized that, when he passed on Branch.

Stock—I believe Guty passed on Branch because he thought he could later cover the safety position with capable draft picks.

Not really NFC North News, but Davante Adams just got traded to the NY Jets.

I watched the Bills vs Jets game yesterday - 2 costly missed field goals for the Jets (which would have won the game for them)........ sound familiar???? Wilson missed 2 50:50 red zone balls and got death stares from GM Rodgers.

Off the back of that "performance" Garret Wilson has clearly just got demoted from WR1 to WR3 (behind Adams AND Lazard....... who caught an absolute screamer BTW - just like the Wicks [or was it Reed?] pass last year through insane traffic).

Rodgers loves Wilson.
Williams just got demoted.
He now has the WR he needs
to take the pressure off Wilson.

Well they are both demoted then - not sure how well Wilson is going to take it though.....

The Bills immediately answered the Adams move by getting Cooper. At this point Allen is a better QB then Rodgers.

The Jets are still irrelevant.
