I love this player, I think he has a chance to be a huge star in the new offense. I also think he's a piece of the running back equation. I don't view him as a Bell Cow, as much as a significant piece of the running back rotation and offense in changing it up constantly. We need a Blue chip banger, and we need AJ... Can you imagine this guy catching the ball out of the backfield for a change, getting him more open field opportunities. Dudes a serious player, love the player, I have some durability concerns with him should he be asked to be a Bell Cow back. I think GB gets it, and I suspect he'll be used very well in the new offense, at least I hope so.. There is a huge role for Aaron Jones in this offense.

Williams is very underrated IMO. He’s certainly stout and good enough for the “bell cow” role.

I suspect there were a lot of SB guarantees made around Atlanta last week.

If anyone watched the defense in the SB, it is plain to see that our defense is a long way from competing with that. I might be in the minority of appreciating a defensive game from 2 powerful offenses. My son came home and said it was a lousy game!?

And the NE O line - what a job protecting Brady!

It pains me to say it but I don't think we are 1 year away from getting to the SB.

How hilarious is it that the wunderkind protege genius future savior of football Sean McVay's offense put up three points last night? Meanwhile all the monkey-see monkey-dos are scrambling to find their own Sean McVay facsimile.

That is kind of funny. I'm sure that people will spend a lot of time an energy looking at the film and trying to find an explanation. MY short answer is that the New England defensive front 7 just flat out beat the offensive line of the Rams. Schemes are wonderful but at some point, you have to beat the guy lined up across from you.

Absolutely! The O-line of the Rams were getting their butt’s kicked all game long. They couldn’t deal with twists, stunts, or any extra pressure. Goff was under duress all night long.... and he didn’t respond all that well.

I made the same point last night under the "McVay Effect" article. I was one of the few here who said I would take a great defense over a great offense and that you can win a super bowl with a great defense. I got clobbered with negative replies by the herd here. The Patriots have no names on offense and a 41 year old qb. They scored 10 points only but it was enough for a super bowl win because of their defense. The "McVay Effect" will be one and done. They'll never get back there. Meanwhile as you said D.D. everyone is scrambling to grab any coach who has associations with McVay, the offensive "genius" who put up 3 points lol. The Packer picked from the wrong tree. Instead of the Rams tree they should have picked from the Patriots tree and the top prize was 6 time super bowl winning assistant coach Josh McDaniels. If you were a betting man, who would most likely have the better chance of becoming the next Bill Billichek? McDaniels with 6 championship rings or Gee LaFleur, who as Troy Aikman said had a "cup of coffee" with McVay. Call me an idiot all you want but I would bet on McDaniels. I loved the game by the way. The Patriots are just a machine. Hats off to them.

A crushing defense beats an 'only' great offense.

No names on offense??? Edelman! Gronk! Who cares if Brady is 41. If you can't get to him and can't slam him even if you do, he can throw it accurately. Would Rodgers have hit Gronk on that throw? This year, he wouldn't have even tried it. He used to 'throw guys open'.

I think most would prefer Daniels. He must have his eye on a particular team he wants to go to as he can have his pick.

Rams are a good team. They will be in contention for years, if they can keep it together. Even being dominated, they were a split second from scoring a TD.

It almost seems as Belichek is toying with the rest of the league. They will rename the 'coach of the year' trophy to the Bill Belichek Trophy after he retires. McCarthy will remain a highly successful NFL coach - in his own mind.

Counterpoint: McDaniel's offense only put up 13 points with a HOF QB.

I'm not so sure about your comments re the coaching tree decisions, it's too early to make calls like that. Mike Pettine was clearly retained as DC for a reason.

I do agree with your comment about Defenses winning championships - I'm a firm believer in the adage that The Line wins (or loses) the game......and the "skills" players decide by how much.

..... That SB game was a coaching master class by NE though - it pains me a little to say it, but well done NE you deserved to win that game.

Thanks, kind words. It's OK to disagree, we are all passionate Packers fans.... or we'd be on a Hockey or Basketball fansite till August by now!

To your point Dash, it will be interesting to see how Matt Patricia goes at the Lions in his second year. The Bill Belichick "coaching tree" doesn't actually have a great track record, and to date no-one has a winning record in the NFL.

... sorry there's an issue posting the link. there was an article on touchdownwire earlier last year that went into it.

If the Packers hired McDaniels the first fist fight between a GB QB and a coach would occur. The first time Rodgers changed a play it would be throw down time, after McDaniels screams " You're NOT treating me like you did fat Mike" I firmly believe that Vince Lombardi would have kicked the living shit out of Bart Starr, had he treated him like Rodgers did McCarthy.

I think we're within barking distance on defense, but the key is getting guys in the secondary who can cover. Both secondaries did a very good job of keeping guys covered, even though Edelman caught quite a few early on.

IMO, the only completion that hurt the Rams was when Gronk set up the TD. And he was pretty well covered on that. Lots of TEs don't make that catch.

Agree, it all starts with our very good interior defensive front, which should make it a bit easier for our OLB. We need a very good safety to bring it all together.

Old School, PeteK,

The way that FA and the Draft are set up this year (in terms of the relative positional strengths of each) this could be a significantly good offseason for the Packers in terms of addressing direct needs.

If the Packers leave this period without a significant FA upgrade at Safety and Oline and Draft upgrades to Edge, TE and D-line (maybe o-line too) then it could reasonably be considered a golden gift squandered.

.... the stars really are in alignment for the Packers to go a significant ways in reloading for another run this off-season.

I'm by no means saying that it all can be done this offseason, but a minimum of 3-4 needs can be addressed to at least starting caliber level

The pressure the Pats put on Goff was absolutely insane. Goff will be sore for a week after those hits

Quite a few of those hits were because the guys were covered and Goff couldn't unload. Both secondaries did an excellent job of neutralizing a pretty good passer. But you look and see a lot of 1st round guys and not very many UDFAs.

As was shown last night, you better have some complexity to your "illusion of complexity" offense.

I thought about that "illusion of complexity" last night during the super bowl when the master Bill Bellichek and the Patriots figured out and showed the entire league how to beat the "illusion of complexity" Rams offense. Aaron Rodgers better fly home from New Zealand quick and start working with Mr. LaFleur on a new course of action quickly. The "McVay Effect" is already over. One year and so many desperate sucker teams bit on it and the assistant coaches associated with him. Meanwhile Josh McDaniels collects another super bowl ring with cheap no name guys on offense to work with.

" Aaron Rodgers better fly home from New Zealand quick and start working with Mr. LaFleur on a new course of action quickly."

LOL...That's a good one....Rodgers already knows how much new input he'll be accepting from LaFleur. The question is, does LaFleur know how much input he'll have to accept from Rodgers.

Belichick was asked after the game if the Patriots borrowed some of the Bears' concepts/schemes for shutting down the Rams, but in typical Belichick fashion, I heard he dodged the question.

It wouldn't surprise me if he did. The Bears completely dominated the Rams and made them look very ordinary. Shoot, WE were on the verge of beating the Rams had it not been for Montgomery's idiotic decision.

That said, I don't think it's unheard of for us to reach the Super Bowl next season, but will submit that I'm more in the camp of 2020 than 2019 for us to contend again. There's a lot of FA pieces and draft picks (future and current) that need to pan out in 2019 for that to happen.

The NFL, more than any other league, comes down to coaching. I say that because the Patriots defense only had one Pro Bowler playing last night: Stephon Gilmore.

Belichick outcoached McVay. McVay looked like a deer in the headlights and that the stage was too big for him. Same for Goff. It was the teacher and the pupil last night.

Last night should show everyone that to win the SB, you win the line of scrimmage. Rams held it together with their defense, (holding opponent to 13 points should win you 97% of your games), but their oline was sleepwalking throughout the game. Also didn't help that Goff looked lost.

The GBP missed out on McDaniels simply due to Murphys ego.

McDaniels will not go where he doesn't get total Belichick-like control and Murphy aint havin nun o' dat.

I hope Lafleur grows into the job, I like his recognition of the run game as an important piece and his retention of Pettine was good.

Not having McDaniels doesn't mean that GB cannot still succeed with MLF. It just has a bit higher odds of that happening.

"I hope Lafleur grows into the job"

Can Aaron Rodgers afford a head coach time to grow into his job? If we are not in a win the super bowl right now type of team fine but I was under the impression we are supposed to win it all next season. We can't afford a head coach time to grow and make mistakes. Having the oldest qb in the league with one of the youngest inexperienced head coaches doesn't sound like a great fit to me for a short term turnaround. Having said that I pretty much agree with everything you said JohnBlood. Not picking McDaniels was a huge mistake.

So disagreeing on our head coach selection is a reason for you to call me a "turd"? I resent that Coach JV. Besides if everyone agreed nobody would have any fun here right? What I enjoy is being so right on a daily basis that everyone looks at me like I am some villain. I actually understand what it's like to be Bill Bellichek and Tom Brady now. Being so good at what you do that people resent you for it.

It's not because of Murphy's ego. That's a silly notion. It's because he proved in Denver that he can't handle personnel decisions. And after hiring Gute last year, who has so far done a decent job, there's no way McDaniels is getting that kind of control.

So yeah... we passed on him. And it's a good thing too. He'd probably trade AR and bring in Tebow.

Did anyone else notice that there was a noted lack of weird schemes and trick plays on offense? This was an old style, block your men and get open game. And defense was cover your man because we are blitzing - a lot. Coverage was for the most part excellent. Every defensive coordinator will be very busy studying this game. If Rams double teamed Edelman earlier, the game still be going - into it's 100th overtime - LOL!
