Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Kinda Campy

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

ST emphasis - All reports are that Special Teams are finally getting their due in practice. I guess all that was ever needed was a forceful coach that LaFleur respects enough not to be able to say no to?

Strong DL - Clark, Reed, Slaton, Lowry, Wyatt - that's a hell of a solid-sounding and versatile defensive line. The run defense should be much improved and Campbell/Walker are going to love playing behind that front.

Defense - On paper, is there a glaring weakness on this Packers defense? And I mean GLARING, not middling. Anyone?

Marcedes Lewis - On his day off (veteran rest) Lewis was seen on the field coaching his fellow tight ends on, what else, blocking techniques. Future coach when he finally does retire?

Gary/Dillon Collision - Back in my high school football days, we had a variation of the Oklahoma drill that was RB vs. LB without a blocker for the running back. The running back was pitched the ball and had three lanes he could choose from to run through. The linebacker (or DL) was waiting for him to make his choice and then rushed to meet the RB head-on in the "hole" he chose. (it was NOT the favorite drill of the running backs group). I'm imagining that drill with Gary as the LB and Dillon as the RB and what that collision would register on the Richter scale.

Zach Tom - To me, he's the biggest surprise of camp so far. To be getting so many reps right off the bat with the ones for a fourth-round pick with more experience at center than tackle is something very unexpected. During evaluations for the CHTV Draft guide, we had him slotted as a center only, so included him with the IOL group (guards and centers). Joseph Randolph, who was doing draft analysis on our CHTV Live Draft Show was thrilled when the Packers picked him (although I don't remember if he liked him strictly as an interior lineman or not). In the draft guide, James Siebers (Packers analyst for DraftTek) acknowledged his weak points but accurately identified why the Packers would be interested. I'm just really surprised, but then again, I remember Ben Braden raising eyebrows early at last year's camp and then not making the team. So yes, it's still early.

Sean Rhyan - Equally surprising to me, although in the opposite way, is how little we've heard about Sean Rhyan. And when we have, it' was just about him losing reps against Devante Wyatt. Personally, I expected Rhyan to be in the early mix for the right guard spot with Royce Newman and certainly over Jake Hansen, but that hasn't materialized thus far.

Larry McCarren said that Hanson had two wonderful reps in the one on ones yesterday. He didn't say against whom. The defensive linemen are so good that perhaps it doesn't matter too much. If they came against Byers, Ford or Heflin, it is less impressive than if they were against Clark.

It is true he has had a good camp. The one on ones went well. I haven't seen tweets about him one way or the other, though. Still, the coaches keep putting out there with the ones and twos.

I remember having high hopes for Hanson when they drafted him: smart, experienced, a natural leader/great attitude, athletic, etc. He just needed more strength. I think we're seeing the classic improvement of a guy who "just needed ___." That, and practicing against Kenny Clark every day!

He benched 33 times, but his lower body was not nearly as developed. The team did make some mention of needing the weight room after the draft. He then had what turns out to have been a bad injury in the PS as a rookie. He was still coming off that in camp last year, though I don’t think we knew then.

I remember being surprised when they did trot him out at G in game last season as a replacement. He had become something of a mystery by then. We had never really seen him healthy or as a G prospect or much at all. There was surprise when he made the 53.

He wasn’t a popular pick, didn’t show immediately, seems to have been seen as a guy they could unlock the positives with physical development but got hurt … I really don’t think I or most non team personnel know what we have in him. I do sense observations that are more driven by what we thought we did not have.

Fortunately, we are going to get plenty of opportunities to see if he is real over the next month. He’s clearly the back up C at present and he’s going to get reps at G in contact. I’m going to wipe the slate and take a fresh look before forming an opinion either way. In reality, you can’t judge an OL and particularly a G in shorts meaningfully anyway. Pretty often looks better then only to disappoint.

Hanson is the second example in the last two years from the Yosh Nijman playbook. Only 6 offensive snaps in 2021 and 13 ST snaps, but was on the 53 all season. Coming out of camp, I expected him to be a PS body...likely would have been elevated when Myers got hurt. There's clearly something there that the coaching staff likes enough to used a roster spot on with virtually no return...I'll be curious to see what it is.

Me too. He is still largely an unknown quantity to use outside Lombardi Ave. Nijman had incredible physical upside that was obvious and public, it’s just less easy to see the reasons with Hanson, but they clearly saw something.

His making the 53 was the biggest shock at last year's cutdown day. I just didn't think he looked that good in the preseason games. As of now if Myers went down I'd much rather see Tom at center but maybe I'm wrong about that.

It's hard to add lower body strength with a severe hip injury. Maybe he worked at it this offseason. I get a little nervous about OL guys when they say they need to get stronger, it seems like a lot of the never do. Daryn Colledge always pops into my mind. I wonder if it's the guys that had to really bulk up to get to O lineman size? That didn't hurt Joe Thomas though so who knows.

All Pac-12, 2nd squad two years running with NFL guys taking the first spots. A Center who knows the technique, so he gets cross training to fill as a guard. He's the backup Center. Takes Patrick's role.

In Schneidman's practice recap article at The Athletic, he lists the 1 on 1's, but says the results are from Bill Huber. According to that list, both of Hanson's wins were against Heflin.

Pulled up Hanson's scouting report as I was confused why he was getting so many reps with the 1s

OC8 Jake Hanson, Oregon

STRENGTHS

—Made 49 career starts at center for Oregon and has above-average processing skills.

—Able to comfortably make all protection calls and diagnose fronts.

—Natural fit in a zone scheme that allows him to combo-block laterally and scrape to second-level defenders or take over once movement has already been created.

—Stars in slide protections and is able to stab and redirect laterally to keep the pocket set cleanly.

—Active and efficient hands that won't deliver jarring strikes but are routinely locating appropriately and help him gain natural leverage.

—No-nonsense grinder who brings effort every play and then lines up to do it again; won't wow anyone but is consistent every down.

WEAKNESSES

—Lower half is thinner than ideal; will likely be asked to add additional mass (303 lbs).

—His length is nothing to write home about (32¾") and is below most thresholds.

—Won't want to see him routinely lined up one-on-one against thick nose tackles; has limited functional power and will struggle to anchor versus heavy-hitters.

—Has limited overall positional value and will likely only be a center at the next level; a depth player would ideally have more versatility.

—Needs more consistency to externally rotate hands, screw elbows into his frame and lock out with control inside the defender's frame as a drive-blocker in gap schemes.

OVERALL

Hanson was the leader of an Oregon offensive line that was one of the best in the nation in 2019. He is comfortable making all of the needed calls and setting protections up front. He is a clear communicator who can process the exotic fronts NFL teams will run. His hand usage is technically sound, and while he doesn't knock dudes out, he's efficient in strikes and when replacing. Putting on weight and gaining some functional power, particularly throughout his core, will be the first step in his NFL career, but he has a great foundation to his game already.

Extremely unlikely to have functional power with an under developed lower body (even when managing 33 in the bench press). The question is who he is after time in the strength and conditioning program?

Hanson was injured most of his rookie season and had post-season hip surgery to remedy the problem. That didn't help his development. For all practical purposes he is a second year player this year.

Something else to take into consideration with 1 on 1 reps is that we don't' know if the guy is trying new things or is trying to win the rep. I believe it was Reed that said he uses those reps to work on things. His main goal isn't to win the rep. So while Hanson may win the reps, maybe the guys he is going against is simply working on things.

As long as the coaches are putting him with the 1's and 2's I have to believe he is performing well. But we have a ways to go yet too.

Some sports guys on local Wisconsin radio were making fun of Lions fans because I guess Aidan Hutchinson is struggling against Sewell in camp and they're already afraid he's a bust and then I guess on Monday he got knocked on his butt by a TE. They made a good point about Edge guys hardly ever being 10 sack guys right off the bat when they come into the league. The other thing is Sewell is really good. He struggled with injuries a bit last year but he was a top 10 pick for a reason. And Campbell doesn't strike me as the kind of coach that's going to give a rookie a break by letting him get some reps against the 2nd teamers to build his confidence a bit.

I suppose with their track record it doesn't take much for Lions fans to start to worry about draft picks. We see enough of it around here and have some GMs with some pretty good track records.

I'm in a "Lions market" (if there is such a thing), and they're fawning over the homeboy Hutchinson. Yes, he's taken lumps from vets--and your comment on Sewell is right on: he's no slouch. Maybe outside the "Detroit market" there are commenters who are latching on to when Hockenson flattened him, but, by and large, the general sentiment here is akin to an 8-year-old at Disney with him.

I don't know where they were getting that from, they were just doing a short segment on what was going on with the other North teams.

It's funny I'm in a Wisconsin market but the Madison stations are so weak it's easier to listen to the Score from Chicago 100 miles away than Madison 35 miles away and after dark it's the only option. Even the FM station drops out after about 20 miles. Even more annoying is one of the Madison stations broadcasts Cubs games. 🤬

D-Line... I can't wait until week one to watch this D-Line against Dalvin Cook AND Kurt Cousins in Minnesota. That will be a good test for the D-Line right away against Cook. As for Cousins, he'll experience more pressure from the Packer's D-Line this year than any other time since he's been there. It's NOT just the edges anymore that QBs will have to be concerned about. I also suspect the Vikings will get a taste of those A Gap blitzes Mike Zimmer was so fond of. Can you imagine Quay Walker, with his size and speed, shooting the A Gaps?...#Priceless

As great as it's been to read each day about Doubs and Tom, it's been discouraging, at least somewhat to never hear much about Rhyan. I thought the RG spot would be his. The whole Watson thing is really a bummer. He can talk until he's blue in the face about mental reps but with each passing day it becomes more and more likely his impact in 2022 will be like a fart in the wind. You won't even notice. It's hard enough for a rookie WR to make an impact, but now one from North Dakota State and NO time with QB12? I think it's going to be a REALLY long season for Christian Watson.

I'm salivating at thoughts of our pass rush as well. I've always been a big proponent of athletic power rushers, and now we have Gary, Clark, Wyatt, and Walker who are all A+ of those types, while Smith, Reed, and Slayton are B+ and Campbell and Lowry are Bs.
That's a fast, powerful rush group.

I'm not worried about Watson, as I always thought his role this year would be that of MVS as a field stretcher. He might not be used for anything else this year, but with Doubs looking like a solid replacement for Adams, and Jones and Dillon looking like huge receiving threats, and the hopeful improvement of the TE position (Tonyan returns, DeGuara and Davis improve), this offense will still rock!

Watson's first year maybe low impact, but remember Rashan Gary! Gary was low impact his first year and he is a monster now. Coming out of North Dakota State, it would be hard to believe that Watson would be NFL ready. I always thought he was a long term draft choice, not a 2022 high impact player. Hopefully we will see him blossom in the coming years, a la Gary.

I always though Watson would be running a limited route tree this year. Go routes and similar and ones designed to get the ball in his hands in space and run. He always had a huge learning curve. I think that may be a saving grace: we can get him up to speed on those faster.

I thought going into camp he could get a few snaps at the X spot and give Watkins a breather now and then. Not so sure now, I seriously doubt he faced much(or any) press coverage in college. Z is much easier for rookies to play being off the line but I'm not sure who the X would be if Watkins misses time. You want a guy strong enough to defeat press and also fast enough to take advantage if the CB whiffs. Lazard is certainly strong enough but not sure if he's quick enough.

Like you said last week they have plenty of slot options, outside receivers could be a problem if Watkins can't stay healthy. Getting Watson a couple of deep balls early in the season would be a good sign.

Normally I would agree with you about rookies not having big impacts after missing a lot of camp and preseason time but Watson might be the exception. His speed and skillset will allow him to make an impact whether he's up to speed mentally or not. Hes going to get a healthy dose of fades, posts, screens, and jet sweeps. Not saying he'll be a 1000 yd receiver as a rook, but his speed will scare defenses enough to matter and have to account for him.

I was at practice yesterday (unfortunately on the 50 yard line of the south field, so even with binoculars it was hard to see much of the scrimmage).
My best impressions: 1. Aaron Jones 2. AJ Dillon 3. Romeo Doubs 4. Aaron Rodgers 5. Quay Walker Those five all had multiple "truly impressive" plays.

Walker's first one-on-one (vs. Dillon) was jaw-dropping; he was blindingly fast and incredibly explosive. He went through Dillon like AJ was a fifth-grader. He'd have had a sack in less than two seconds.

Jones had a few incredible catches--he just screamed "obvious passing threat."
Dillon was similar; he made several great catches.

Doubs made every available play--he looks like a seasoned vet.

I should also add Jaire Alexander: He was the most "dialed-in" of anyone I saw out there. The guy is incredibly focused at every moment.

Al, I'm in your camp of "surprised that Rhyan isn't making an impact".
Happy that Tom is holding his own and the rookie ILB is showing his capability.
The defense can be outstanding with the right breaks. When Jenkins comes back, and if Bak plays to his previous level...this team can get to the SB. They will be better than last years efforts.

I'm not terribly surprised that the news is scant on Rhyan...he's learning an entirely new position (RG) and getting only limited snaps at a second position (RT) that's not the same that he played in college. G is a more physical position than T, and it's harder to assess how a G is doing when they aren't wearing pads: they gotta be able to bang and grind, and frequently strong guard play is hard to see. You have to look at groupings as much as anything else. Royce Newman, as an example, came out of nowhere to grab the RG position a year ago.

Even though Tom was graded as a C, he played a lot of LT and that's where he finished his college career--so he has recency in his favor. He's very smart and athletic. He's not been asked to learn a new position or new footwork, and we're only just getting to the parts of camp (padded) where his greater liabilities--size and functional strength--might start to get exploited. I agree that it's encouraging that one of the first-year OL has made a strong impression out of the gate, but let's pump the breaks and see where we go from here.

I don't evem think there is a middling weakness on the defensive roster. The only "weakness" I can think of is Savage has shown he can under perform. But he also has All Pro potential.

I haven't been stoked for the Packers Defense like this since they held Barry Sanders to something like -1 yard.

I think the change in Defensive Coordinator hurt Savage a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if this year he starts playing better again. For one he will have a full year in the new systems. Second Barry knows Savage's strengths and weaknesses even better.

Savage seems to have looked good in camp thus far. As to weaknesses, the real test on D is depth. Ask again in a month and we know who sit behind the starters and more about them. That’s why I love how competitive this camp seems. Hopefully we will see players step up and stay there.

I really love the versatility these OL players bring to the table. If Tom weren't so versatile, at so many positions, we may have heard more from Sean Rhyan, by now. I see Rhyan playing back up RG, to Newman, now. Tom could be our starting RT, until Bakh, or Elgton comes back. Then, maybe, Nijman, or Elgton shifts to RT? So many players can be plugged into so many positions. Gotta be a nice problem to have!

But I’m all for a change at TE. Rb vs. LB - No wonder why Ray Nitschke wanted to play LB. Tom wasn’t a big surprise. Just give him a chance, and he’ll replace someone. Sean Ryan- Technically: His arm length and footwork will take time. Are Gutey’s 3rd rd. Picks cursed? I would have taken Leo Chenal first. But we did need a OL didn’t we?

A point often overlooked is the coaches/Gute will have to pick an offensive line to start the season that will be adjusted when/if David. B. and E. Jenkins return.

The decision on Jenkins is an interesting one. Do you sit/move Runyan to put Jenkins back in his old spot? Do you move him to right guard or right tackle? Do you move Runyan to right guard? It's a good problem to have, but some players are going to go to inactive after having been first -teamers.

Then, who goes to the practice squad or gets cut?

With the versatililty preached by the Packers, I'm all but certain they'll make adjustments to put their best 5 OL on the field if/when Jenkins is ready. You make a great point in that it could lead to a lot of shuffling, or it could be as simple as Jenkins going to RT and Nijman going to the bench. If Jenkins doesn't practice in camp and goes on the PUP, it's very likely that other injuries will dictate the roster moves made by the time Jenkins is eligible to play.

If Jenkins is healthy, I think Hanson would be the most likely if they seek to reduce numbers if they don’t keep an extra guy such as a Van Lanen initially, but realistically there is a probability that injuries will intervene to change things. At this point one can worry about what we have available now.

Maybe it's just arguing about words, but I think you could make a decent case that a lack of depth can be a "glaring" weakness. You simply can't expect to get through a season without injuries to front line players. As things stand, unless guys step up in camp, the Packers lack any notable depth at all behind their 2 starters at edge, their 2 starters at safety and their top 3 corners. For sure, that's a weakness. Whether it qualifies as glaring or not, I don't know.

I’d argue that that could be a glaring weakness or prove to be something of a strength. That’s really why preseason matters. That’s when we find out if the depth is illusory or real at each position. As of today we’ve barely started that since we’ve only had one practice in pads. By September we should have a better idea. I do think that there is a real possibility that our depth is better this year, but now we will see if that’s just optimism from shorts and metrics.

ST emphasis -
This definitely is a good thing. We have to have more commitment to the special teams. And we need the right players to be be playing. It sounds like they are doing their due diligence.

Strong DL -
I can't wait to see our DL in games. This is possibly our best DL top to bottom in a long time.

Defense -
On paper there is only 1 weakness. That is depth at OLB, CB, and S.
On the field there isn't weaknesses either. Just the depth is my only concern.

Marcedes Lewis -
Lewis should definitely go into coaching.

Gary/Dillon Collision -
I loved the drill as a FB, I hated the drill as a LB. I can believe any LB would love that drill with Dillon running through the hole.

Zach Tom -
I honestly am not surprised. He was one of the players I thought could come in right away and compete. I felt was going to be looked at OT. His size is similar Bakhtiari's. I thought he could be the next great packers 4th round OL. I really think he could potentially be a day 1 starter. Obviously there is a ways to go, but we have to really be feeling good about Tom at this point.

Sean Rhyan -
I agree that I am a little surprised we haven't heard much about Rhyan so far. I was expecting him to compete for the RG spot as well. Which he maybe still will. It takes some time sometimes and we have a ways to go yet. Lets see how shit shakes out in a few weeks.

The “glaring weakness” comment was imo directed at Savage…and perhaps the overall depth in the middle of the GB “D”.
The safety position is imo the critical component to a great defense as opposed to a good defense.
Butler; Atwater; Lott; Reed; Polamalu; Lynch; Willie Wood; et al; were the catalysts of great defenses.

I agree...S is not the spotlight position like CB, but great S play prevents big plays and TDs. I would add Nick Collins to the list who was on a HOF track before the devastating neck injury in his prime.

The Pack has been so very fortunate to get Amos. One of the most underrated players on the team. He doesn't get many press accounts because he does his job so well. Tackles that prevent a gash play, covering your man to take the read away from QBs, and being the on field "coach" of the DBs getting everyone in the right spots.

And to add to your point, field a D with below average Safeties it is rarely a top 10 squad.

I agree, Al...Big Dog as a TE coach (and more) seems plausible. By all accounts the man is a great leader, communicator. I have read a few times that he spoke up before games and when he speaks, "people listen".

Cobb is one of my all-time favorites as a Packer, but I would prefer him nowadays as a coach than a player.
Over the years, he has seemed to be one of those guys who is always competing for an edge in a game, and then comes up big in the clutch.
I'll always remember his big catch of 48 yards for a game-winning touchdown against the Bears in 2013 -- on 4th-and-eight with less than a minute to go. It put the Packers in the playoffs with a division title and knocked the Bears out.
However, at almost 32 years of age -- unless he's come to this training camp rejuvenated in some amazing way that takes him back at least a few years -- it doesn't seem he has the athleticism anymore to consistently keep up with the younger wide receivers and make a significant contribution to the Packers.
I'd be glad to be wrong, but as of now it seems he's preventing another talented receiver with the Packers from emerging into a key contributor, and thus hindering the offense in general.
If I'm right, it's actually kind of sad. It seems Aaron Rodgers is forcing the Packers to go with Cobb to the detriment of the team and perhaps even the embarrassment of Cobb.
Please, other fans here at CHTV point out how I'm wrong. I hope I am.

Swisch—you and I disagree much on ARod, but I completely agree with you on this—well said.
Cobb is past his prime and ARod’s influence is keeping him on the roster.
Hope you’re recovering well - best regards!

Thanks so much, Starrbrite.
I'm grateful to be gradually getting better and better, it seems; and in the meantime am trying to be patient with my limitations, to varying degrees of success.
I think I have a couple of more months to go in this first part of my recovery.
I truly hope you are well these days.

Long time vets don't tend to be coaches because the pay at the bottom of the ranks isn't worth their time. Will Lewis want to put in 16 hour days as coach after having a lucrative career? More times than not they prefer to enjoy retirement.

Boyd Dowler was 32 in Super Bowl 2 and had a big game and he certainly was not in the same football shape compared to the advancement in training in todays NFL.

For different players the decline happens at different ages.
To my eye, Cobb wasn't up to the job last season, and hasn't been all that good going back to the end of his first stint in Green Bay a few years ago. It seems that's why the Packers didn't keep him.
I would be delighted to be proved wrong and for Cobb to contribute in an important way this season, even as a role player. To me -- and it's sad to say this -- it just seems as though Cobb is mostly in the way.
***
As a contrast, Marcedes Lewis does seem to have an important role with the Packers that is ongoing in his effectiveness as a blocker and an occasional weapon catching the ball almost as if by surprise.
Lewis seems to be up to the job, while Cobb doesn't.
Again, I would be glad to be wrong about Cobb.
I love the guy, and would be delighted to have him stay with the Packers in some meaningful capacity off the field.

Cobb’s history since he landed on the in game mike is hard to ignore. He has at least been good when healthy but he’s not been that all that much. Last season was pretty much a microcosm of his career after that injury. Of course, one can say the same about Watkins.

The only possibly glaring weakness on paper for the defense is secondary depth. Once you get past the starters, there's precious little experience. Everything else looks rock solid throughout, especially the DL rotation. This should be a pretty formidable defense barring any spate of prolonged injuries.

Who do like on the EDGE past Gary and Preston? Depth there is even more of a concern and it is much harder to find a pass rusher than a DB.

We at least have a little experience with Garvin and Tipa; also we have a promising rookie in Enagbare. Otherwise I think we have enough versatile players for Barry to be able to manufacture pressure in a pinch...hopefully.

Tipa is needed for the speed rush. An All-Star @ Utah State. Place him in tandem with Walker on a two-way go and one of them will reach the QB. Barry isn't inside or outside the box; he is going polygonal. If he's as good as they say, he should be using Kinetic Particle Theory. Analytics are for high school squads.

I don't know if it is glaring but depth at EDGE on defense has to be a real concern. I keep thinking they will add a vet here in camp but it hasn't happened yet. After Gary and Preston there is no one and you can't rely on just two pass rushers all season, one will get hurt. If one does go down you can double the other and the defense will be greatly effected.

We are entering the part of camp where we see what we have. Without pads one learns nothing about OLBs except that speed types always look good.

They really like Ramsey but is he ready to compete after a horrible injury. If he is, he will be competing with Tipa. Most of the rest we haven’t seen even that much of in circumstances where they have had time in the system and we can evaluate them, except Garvin, who is a developmental 7th rounder anyway.

Let’s get some games and full pad practices in the books and see if anyone shows and who before venturing to anoint or dismiss. At the moment, it’s just a collective question mark.

If you saw Tom play in college this would be no surprise. He also has the size to be a versatile guy who can play anywhere on the line. Those big clubs he has for hands will come in very handy at the NFL level where it is hands game as much as anything else.

I there's a lot of premature evaluations here.

I called up Allen Iverson and he said "It's practice, man."

There'll be some shuffling, we'll play a scrimmage against SF, there'll be some more shuffling. I think we're a lot more set than many people I read here. Our entire starting defense, and nickel package, seems pretty set. Our two QBs are set. Our 9 offensive linemen are largely set: Nijman, Runyan, Myers, Newman, Van Lanen, Tom, Rhyan, Hanson,....room for ONE more.

Our skill position guys are set: Lazard, Cobb, Watkins, Rodgers, Doubs, Watson, Lewis, Tonyan, DeGuara, Davis, Jones, Dillon, ....probably Goodson.

I don't see Goodson making the 53 over Taylor or Hill if he's back. Sounds like Goodson can't pass block to save his butt. What good is a RB if you can't put him on the field.

They will keep Four running backs. Hill will fill in later, if healthy. Attrition will come in play by game six. Stock the shelves.

I would certainly offer Lewis a chance to coach if he seemed interested in it. I don't think it's automatic he'd accept though, he's put in a lot of hours on the practice field and also knows how many hours the coaches have to put in. Wouldn't blame him at all for wanting to take a year before looking into something like that.

Pre-draft I said that Zach Tom is the most "Packers" OL in this year's draft. He put up good tape against some impressive talent in college. I'm not surprised. I'm happy.

For Mr. Rhyan, you look at his tape against top talent and you'll see him slip to the ground as he allows himself to get off balance. Long-term, I like him a lot. He has a hell of a motor. Short-term, I hope the balance thing is coachable rather than being an indication of his ceiling as an athlete.

Glaring weaknesses on this defense? No. Not until you get to the second string, and if we are talking second string I don't know that I would call it "glaring." What it really all comes down to for this unit is injuries, and how fast some of the rookies develop, and how far some of the back-ups jump up this off-season. But if you're not excited about the potential of this defense then you need therapy.

"Clark, Reed, Slaton, Lowry, Wyatt - that's a hell of a solid-sounding and versatile defensive line. "

Aren't these a lot of question marks? We know what Clark and Lowry can do. Reed was let go by the Seahawks after a contract dispute b/c they couldn't find a trade partner. He didn't do that much in K.C. last season, getting only 2.5 sacks and only 2 TFLs despite playing 64% of the defensive snaps. That's not much of an impact player, and so K.C. let him go. Slaton only played 24% of the defensive snaps last year with zero TFL, I QB hit and 1 sack. He had 14 solo tackles. Not sure this screams impact player either. And then we all want Wyatt to be a great addition, but being a rookie he is an even bigger unknown. Even Kenny Clark didn't have a big impact as a rookie.

So I have high hopes for the D line, but they will only be a force if every guy plays to our thought of his highest potential. Because there's not a ton of evidence yet of any truly impactful player outside of Clark.

In would bring Ford on board and keep Six D-linemen. Rotate and annihilate. Four with their hands on the ground in some sets with Gary. Endless possibilities. The Dom 3-4 has passed the Sell Date.

One thing I'm VERY excited about? Jordan Love starting to look like an NFL QB! THIS is the best thing that could come out of this year, outside of a Lombardi award in February.

Footwork. The Basis of efficiency for the QB in the WCO. Walsh drilled Montana and saved Steve Young's career with Fundamental step action and delivery. Holmgren was the guy Walsh loved best and he demanded the kata to be followed meticulously. He molded Favre from the same cookbook and Brunell, Ty Dytmer, Hassellbach etc.
Paul Hackett to McCarthy and the design for Rodgers. We could all see the lack of Love's fundamentals with his read and delivery. A blessing for him to have Tom Clements as his Guru to save his career.

Bear,
What I have been saying!

Positive Love news can potentially benefit the team for another 10 to 15 years. Have never given up on the guy. He is still younger than some rookies this year meaning he will continue to mature and develop as a QB for quite a few years. This is a big year for him to show what he has, but remember he is a long-term developmental player with likely a long career ahead of him. Love's success will make or break the team in the next couple years.
