Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Follow the Leaders

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

So the Packers have their new Defensive Coordinator. Personally, I wish there had been some way the Packers could have kept Anthony Campanile for one more year and be introducing him as their new Defensive Coordinator right now. Somewhat for the energy and emotional impact he brings, but more importantly, the amazing turnaround he orchestrated in only one year of leading the Jaguars' defense. He took a defense that in 2024 was last or next to last in almost every defensive category and transformed them into a top-10 and arguably maybe even a top-5 NFL defense. Yeah, we could use that in Green Bay.

Having said that, I don't mind the fact that the Packers have brought in an experienced NFL defensive mind in Jonathan Gannon to run that side of the ball. He has experience under a variety of top defensive coaches who ran a variety of schemes and defensive philosophies. His W-L record with the Cardinals means little to me - different situation, different personnel, etc. LaFleur can let the experienced Gannon be the "head coach" of the defense. Hopefully that will mean LaFleur has more time to focus on things like figuring out how not to waste time outs and keeping the offense on the field in the second half of games so the defense doesn't get gassed. You know, the little things...

But what about Jim Leonhard, I hear you screaming over there. Well, what about him? I kind of feel he has been totally over-hyped because of his Wisconsin roots. I'm not saying he's not a good coach (I honestly can't definitively say either way), but Packers Nation has made him out to be like some mythical figure that must return to his homeland to complete the circle of his Wisconsin roots and be the final missing piece to the Packers' Super Bowl puzzle. But is he all that? Easy for me to feel this way, of course, because I have no emotional attachment to UW football. So if you are one of the ones screaming about LaFleur not waiting a day to interview Leonhard, feel secure in knowing that I understand and I feel for you. Maybe.

On the offensive side, we have Adam Stenovich, the man of mystery offensive coordinator who doesn't get to call plays. That basically makes him a highly paid assistant coach with a title. The supposition is that he has a large hand in developing the game plan for the upcoming opponent. That entails studying their defense and designing plays to take advantage of supposed weaknesses, personnel groupings or overall scheme. In the end, though, whether the plays he has come up with are used or not is totally up to Matt LaFleur. The first half of the Packers - Bears playoff game was the Packers best called offensive half of football of the entire season. The second half was one of the worst. Does Stenovich get the credit for the first half and the blame for the second half? Probably not. LaFleur has to shoulder the blame of that second half offense. So while everyone seems to want Stenovich to land a true coordinator job elsewhere, I'm not sure that will solve anything.

There are, however, some definite things I don't like about Stenovich. Primary is his stubborn adherence to maximum versatility on the offensive line. There is little doubt he has stunted Jordan Morgan's development with bouncing him around multiple positions. This was your first round draft pick selected to be your left tackle of the future, yet for two years, you play him anywhere but that position. Anthony Belton is another case, although to a lesser extent. I still believe in prioritizing continuity on the offensive line. I know this is old school thinking, but that doesn't make it wrong. Next, while I wouldn't judge his coaching ability based on this, I really dislike his personality, which admittedly, I only get to see in his interactions with the media. He's often a bit smug and patronizing, and you can see he very much dislikes having to ask answer any questions, nevermind difficult questions. He has that "how dare you question me, you know nothing" vibe about him (i.e., the anti-Jeff Hafley).

And then we come to Brian Gutekunst. This will likely be the offseason that defines his tenure and maybe legacy as GM of the Packers. Major cap issues will require releasing some starters and others will walk out the door as free agents. Do they have the depth to replace those players from within without a drop in performance? Only in a few cases. Do they have upgrades for players still on the team that have underperformed? Overall, probably not. There is no first round draft pick this year and next and in recent years, draft picks have not been given many opportunities to be overly impactful on the field as rookies anyway (see Matthew Golden). There will be little money for free agent acquisitions, and you can't say last year's free agent additions were money well spent. All this as the Packers enter a "Micah Parsons 2-year Super Bowl Window."  If Gutey called for "urgency" last offseason, what does this year require? For Gutey, maybe some good fortune and a magic wand.

Go Pack Go!

Keisean Nixon - Pro Bowler!!
****
I don't see why Gary isn't in the Pro Bowl again this year.
He mirrored his production from 2024 (Pro Bowl) to his production in 2025.
He must have got robbed, what gives?
Both seasons he had 7.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble., almost identical solo tackles
If THAT doesn't get you in the Pro Bowl, i don't know what does.

Speaking of Pro Bowl, don't forget to tune in Feb. 3rd

Remember, defense is the least of this teams' problems.

Scoring 30 points a game is a wish until they revamp and improve the O-line and it doesn't matter who the skill people are if they don't get this fixed. Missed extra points and field goals won't have much effect either. Just have to rely on great punting.

Are you talking about the defense that helped give up 4 or was it 5, double digit leads within the last 5 minutes of the game?

Yes, we need to also improve the OL, but IMO, the DL is as critical to improve as the OL.

I'm hoping Gannon's no-nonsense approach gets some discipline, better communication and accountability on this defense. Yes, I'm looking at you Nixon, but there were others.

I'm not saying the D doesn't need to improve. I'm saying it won't matter if the O-line isn't fixed. Followed closely by the D-line IF the O-line gets fixed.

I can't be mad at Gary, i'd take the money too.

I'm afraid the Packers really ....ed the pooch on that one.

I heard that Sanders got in bc of numerous AFC QB’s turning down the “honor.” 😉
But I’d wager his agent will try to leverage this awesome achievement for his next contract.

That was a depressing wake up call, Al. I know. It's not your fault.

"If Gutey called for "urgency" last offseason, what does this year require?"

4-allarm emergency? Followed by CPR life support the season after?

If this skipping record continues the way it has, are we looking at the best players on the team with bad attitudes, and MLF losing the locker room?

Gutey has been in place as GM for 8 years and just got extended so he likely is in place for at least 5 more seasons. The actions of the powers that be at 1265 Lombardi show they are perfectly satisfied with Gutey's performance.

"Urgency" was just PR, there is nothing urgent when it comes to the Pack, Gutey just needs to keep up the "good work" as defined by his boss(es).

Versatility seems to be overvalued in Packer circles to the detriment of player development. I thought Hendrickson was the OL guru but if so he may need to sharpen his observations. The OL is the key to 2026, and most seasons actually, IMHO.

To me Stenavich Is not an OC but he is a great o-line coach. Our o-line Is in the top5 every year with Stenavich even with an average personnel. he had no more bakhtiari, he had average to bad C, he had to move Jenkins, he greatly developed Walker as a legitimate LT starter coming in as an undrafted.
We have Jonh Schneider and Eliot Wolf as GM in the SB. This Is the end for gutekunst, he was the wrong choice by Murphy, history has given its verdict. Wolf drafted maye, SB and MVP candidate, Gutey traded up for love making a big mess with Rodgers that costed the packers a lot and in result we have the new cutler or cousins.
unfortunately I think Policy will extend him making the same wrong choice of his predecessor.

Yes, in 2021 the line performed well even though they had many injuries and unknown players. That might have been a future HOF knowing how to game manage and an ability to maneuver/scramble in the pocket. That is IMO a weakness in Loves game, sensing pressure (outside blitz vs Bears) and taking off up the middle. We saw all the young QBs use it to great advantage in the playoffs. I know there is a risk potential( Nix) but most don't get greedy and slide.

Major props to Schneider👏

Sold high on Russ, realizing asset value before Russ was worth pennies on the dollar. Cross, Witherspoon, Mafe, just a few of the impactful names in that trade. Rodgers was coming off his b2b MVP--an absolute no-brainer to sell high given his age; yet, from top to bottom, GBP franchise excels at finding ways to lose and then continues to double down like an ignorant addict. The negatives on Gute outnumber the positive probably 8:1, yet here he too is about to be extended. Crash & Burn to get change postponed another year or two😔

Despite Darnold's non-clutch resume, Schneider likely acknowledged Darnold's sample size with MIN in the regular season was more than what Geno Smith would ever give the Seahawks, with seven years of youth to boot--Darnold was the cherry on top.

Despite reaching the Super Bowl, PIG year founded New England franchise is still in its enemy year of the snake...very high odds they fall short. The snake's friendly allies--Rooster (Seahawks founded in Rooster year) & Ox (Darnold born Ox year) should be enough to put hardware🏆 on Seattle's shelf.

An argument could be made the Packers will have some of the most sought after free agents in this year's crop. Combined with the cap constraints they have, they should net at least two, maybe three Day 2 picks in 2027.

They'll begin producing about 2029, when the Love-Parsons Reconciliation hits, so expect pretty much the same as we've seen in the past.

I'm not sure even a magic wand is going to be enough.

It's all balanced out by how many outside FAs on expiring contracts they sign (I don't think cuts count in the equation). If they clear some cap and shop heavy, they could negate most of what they'd get for Willis, Walker, Walker, Rhyan, etc.

It's not easy to get Day 2 picks. I think it's possible for Willis, but don't see any others. We might not get any, who do you think would earn us those? Of course, they can be offset by us bringing in FA's as well. Unfortunately, if we do, it still doesn't help us in 2026.

I really hope Savage is correct and the Packers get a comp pick (or 2?) for day TWO.

I am not deep into the draft yet, but I am reading the 1st round this year is weak, with only around 10-15 coming close to last year's first round talent. If you don't have a #1, this looks to be the year to get by.

If the Packers could get 3-4 picks on day two, fantastic. And I hope it is nose, DT, C...then maybe CB.

No, it helps in 2028 and beyond primarily, by which point we are in cap reboot mode. That’s the problem, none of this adds up logically. The best one can argue is that we are laying some foundation for a post parsons rebuild. I doubt LaFleur or Gute make it far enough to benefit from that.

You might say the Packers have a two year window to win the SB. I will go on record and say they have 1.5 years. I do not see Parsons playing at 100% until at least week 8 next season. He may not play at all until week 8. Yes I know he has said he will be ready by week 3 but I have my doubts.

I like the Gannon hiring. Yes I like Leonhard. I loved watching his defenses for Wisconsin. I wanted him to be the HC when they decided to hire Fickle. I believe he will be a good DC in the NFL someday. I am glad to see MLF make the move right away. Gannon was going to get a job somewhere and we do not know if Leonhard would have accepted the DC position. One thing I like about Gannon is he stated he does not have a scheme. In the NFL both the defense and offense have to adapt to the opponent but more so the defense. I hope he keeps it simple and lets the guys play.

The greatest irony of this season relates to both Gute and Stenavich---For decades, the bears trotted out multiple quarterbacks behind crappy o-lines, selecting or trading for a DE, WR or RB flash over substance, and couldn't figure why they sucked. This year, they put together a top o-line and their questionable QB looks like a pro-bowler. The arrow on our O-line has been sideways or down (this year), and our very good QB and RB look pedestrian at times because of it. As much as special teams has killed the packers in specific games, our o-line problems are pushing us to becoming the bears. Love will get hurt, our RBs will be hit in the backfield, and we will get dominated in the second half. Steno, butkus, and gute need to focus on fixing it, because what they did this year did not work.

You have focused the issue for this offense and I totally agree. Our offensive performance is inconsistent and doesn't stand up when pressed because the O-line can't execute against decent competition. It is the ceiling for this team. I just don't know if Gutekunst knows how to find the studs to fix it.

One can question the talent, but one also has to question what we make of what we have. Players change, but the failings remain the same and now we’ve seen players leave and be better.

We simply can’t seem to teach run blocking or design an OL scheme that produces effective run blocking. We don’t seem to be able to develop OL significantly after they arrive either. We’ve arguably held a few back: Tom, Morgan, Belton certainly, but not necessarily just them.

After all this time I’ve come to the conclusion (not just on the OL) that coaching and the FO don’t really share the same vision at the more detailed level consistently. That means that to some extent they erode the performance of both draft and coaching. The coach won’t adapt his approach or that of his coaches and the scouting doesn’t fully share his. The result is we fight ourselves and each year the cracks get a little wider.

I find the whole seasonal coaching carousel kind of disturbing. I get that people want to be the boss but jumping from team to team even if it is a bad organization seems insanely disruptive for a career and one's family. NFL coaches seem like fashion, something new and bold over top of flawed rosters. Which brings me to Gannon.

I hope our new DC can organize our ponies to pull as a group. Other than Parsons he has a lot of average talent and some chronic gaps to address. Getting the group to top 12 might be over achieving. All I want to see is a defence that is assignment sure and organized. If we get beat or pushed back at the line of scrimmage because our undersized 7th rounder can't make the play I'll look beyond Gannon to the guy who is having trouble building a better roster.

I don’t see our defense as “average talent.” Beyond Parsons, we’ve got two Pro Bowl-caliber players in Cooper and McKinney, plus up and comers like Cox, Williams, and Wyatt, along with second-year guys who could step up on the DL/Edge. I also think LVN is poised to make a leap. You could argue we have one of the best safety tandems in the league with McKinney, Williams, and Bullard. With some added bulk on the DL and the right coaching, this defense has real top-five potential.

Finally, someone with an objective perspective on the Leonhard situation. Not only is he over-hyped because he’s from WI but it’s obvious the Packers anre interested, they’ve now passed on him twice. I was born in WI and am a UW alumni but give it a rest Badger fans. If he was that great he’d be a DC already.

I’m also glad that Al is questioning that OL versatility fixation. I remember hearing a former GM on television saying maybe the Packers should focus on getting players who can play one position really well rather than 3 positions fairly competently.

Yes and yes to your points. On the O-line, my worry is that we don't know what dedicated positional talent looks like. The Aaron Banks signing was a puzzle. Our persistent problem at center is another dilemma. Even when we found a solid center we refuse to pay the man and opt for spinning the wheel of versatility.

While most here see a "up or out" scenario.
The Packers will be in another "transition year".
Gute wrecked a OL that went from 6th to 24.
And he should never have drafted Morgan!
If you look at the rankings of are free Agents.
Surviving the loses, isn't on MLF or staff.
Gute doesn't have money because he blew it.
Making a hole while filling another is a shell game.
Diverting the pressure to the coaches.
Insanity is doing the same things over and over.

And while most here wanted Leonard.
MLF got experience in Gannon, to counter
the Lions hiring Mike Kafka and Johnson.
It would appear MLF knows what he's doing.
While Gute keeps us in transition.

Perpetual rebuild with this guy. 2025 was the go for it year. Injuries hit key players and the depth was not spectacular. He will have to move a player and try to get back up into Rd one and secure a playmaker for the defense. Both guys should have been pitched.

I'll be an optimist, I think with a heap of hope that Morgan, Banks, Rhyan, Belton, and Tom will be a solid to good group with an off & preseason of working together. The experience of playing even though out of position will be a positive.

I liked Leonhard. Yes, in part it's a familiarity bias. Yes, it's also because he has been successful in most stages of his career. I also like Gannon--he's likely what the Packers really need: not a schematic reset, but someone with an NFL track record who can build on what Hafley was doing. A reset at this point probably puts the defense back a year, and the "window" is limited. I think Gannon is a good get...now they just need to fill a couple spots behind him. Hopefully they can find a couple Anthony Campanile types.

It's one thing to point the finger at Milt Hendrickson as a supposed OL guru, and I tend to agree that they've taken shots at players (Nijman, Jones, Telfort) who were PS talents that have lingered on the 53 longer than they probably should have and as a result eroded OL depth. Very few of those projects have gone on to do much elsewhere. We also were lulled into this sense of, "we've found a few gems on day 3 of the draft over the years, so we can plan on that for the future," which is also problematic. Talent wins games, and the best talent goes high in the draft.

We point to Stenavich and Butkus and this notion of OL versatility which has been with the Packers for awhile now. That idea of get the best 5 OL on the field. My take: in the eyes of the coaches, Morgan was not a clear 1a over Walker's 1b (and Walker looked "disengaged" for long stretches this season). They decided Morgan was a better "player" than Rhyan, so they tried to jam him in at G...which didn't work. I thought once Tom got hurt, Morgan was better at RT than he was in that earlier stint. He'll get first shot at LT in the summer, but I wouldn't be surprised if they open with Tom at LT in September. I think Belton on the other hand looks like an NFL player and was serviceable at RT and has gotten somewhat better as he's gotten used to the RG position he was thrown into.

Bottom line is that one bad body on the OL drags down the others around him and it all starts with your C. If your C isn't making the right calls, your OL is going to essentially like what the Packers' OL looked like down the stretch. I'm no OL scout, but I'm not terribly impressed with Rhyan, and I wouldn't be disappointed if the Packers just let him walk. He's not going to get a fat contract elsewhere, but he'll likely be bid out of the Packers' budget. Maybe Rhyan spends a whole off-season honing his C chops and comes in next summer as a revelation...or maybe not. James Campen is consulting on OL scouting this off-season, and the Packers need to find a C either in the draft or as a value FA.

Agree Dobber. The OL operation (players/coaches) is the weak link on the Packers. If you have a chain of 4 solid links but a weak one, especially at center, the important synergies needed on the OL turn into antagonism and discord.

Rhyan was serviceable, but not much more. Packers need to (finally) upgrade at C. I doubt Jenks gets a chance at redemption.

OL could be good at T and moving Tom to LT would seem to be an important and easy decision when Walker gets his money from a needy team. Morgan played well at RT once he was able to practice there with Belton on his left. Belton will only get better with better technique, but he's a powerful mauler.

Banks will likely get a chance to show he is not an expensive luxury...but he better show up in shape and able to play football.

Gannon needs to live up to expectations on D. ST need to gain acceptance. But if LaFleur cannot fix the OL....

"Rhyan was serviceable, but not much more."

He's projected to get about $6.5M AAV on the open market. Guys like Tyler Linderbaum and Conner McGovern probably don't make the FA market, but would be out of the Packers' price range, anyway. There will be a few guys who get cut, yet, but most of what's left are guys coming off injuries or guys who haven't played a lot. There needs to be a plan here, but they're going to need to sign a guy (maybe that's Rhyan) and probably draft a guy who can play C. Maybe they still think Monk can play and be decent. If he can, that would be a tremendous boon to the OL and the cap.

"Banks will likely get a chance to show he is not an expensive luxury."

I agree: they need to let Jenkins go to fuel the cap, and you can't cut everyone. They get some savings on Banks with a cut, but probably not enough to replace him for what they save. I think that if they put a decent C next to him that maybe he'll be decent, and then maybe the axe falls after 2026...or he plays well enough to earn 2027, too. I agree, he can't miss camp and take all season to play himself into shape.

If we have coaches that credibly made two players worse than they should be by the way they handled them and persisted in doing so, then that alone should argue for change. We do, as Al points out, whatever Belton and Morgan can be, we made sure that they were less than they could be by how we prepared and used them.

This isn’t the first time either, it goes back vis Newman and Hanson to switching the whole OL around in the playoffs—which Stenavich admitted was his call (LaFleur just deferred to it). Nijman couldn’t play RT and they therefore wouldn’t practice him there till they ran out of other options and threw him in. Sound familiar! Tom couldn’t play Rt for a year so we sat him as a back up G and played Newman and then Jenkins. A year later Tom could do nothing else, that’s just the ones we see.

There was the Glover/Telfort blooding at G in the playoffs last year—which ties in with Belton and Morgan this. It’s perennial. Who knows how it affects our depth players like Monk? Of course we don’t get better: we neither learn nor change our those who won’t.

If anyone thinks the offensive line coaching is defensible, then good luck to you. It’s not. It hasn’t been in half a decade despite a HC who decided to move to a run first offense openly. Actually it’s almost archetypal of inherently an inherently self-defeating example of a mismatch between objective and actions. Yet it persists and we are still firmly in denial.

"There was the Glover/Telfort blooding at G in the playoffs last year"

To be fair, they were already thin and they were losing guys left and right on the OL in that game. Jenkins, Meyers. It's not like they went into that game saying, "Hey, we're going to toss these guys into the mix at G from the start and win!" It's hard to equate that to the "Billy Turner at LT" situation.

I agree with you Al. Stenovich's personality and his communication style rubs me the wrong way too.

For me it is the Fickell syndrome. When Fickell first arrived in Madison, I was alarmed how he communicated. It is scatter shot with little cohesiveness and leaves you wondering "what is his point?" It is not at all inspiring, strategic or even tactical. But I held out hope he was better communicating Team Mission and Strategy to his coaches and players. So far, I'd say he's also a ball of confusion with his team.

Stenovich gives me the same vibes. Not as confusing as Fickell, but like similarly, I don't learn or understand Steno's priorities, problem solving, how he coaches up guys and gets them following. Lots of cliches and bromides.

Regarding Gannon, the more I find out about him the more positive I feel. Unfortunate Leonhard did not get an interview, but it seemed Gannon was a first choice for both Harbaughs and a third team(?) made an undisclosed offer.

If LaFleur would have waited to decide until after talking with Jim, he may have lost both.. It may also be Sean Payton told Leonhard the DC job would be his if Lance Joseph gets a HC job, which many expect.

Bird in the hand.

BTW, Peter Butowski over at "Locked on Packers" talked with many in the NFL who personally know Gannon. Butowski said to a person they all had a very high regard for him...which surprised him. Good to hear.

I had thought I saw that Stenovich is leaving the Packers. Anyone else see that? I also did not care for his wanting versatility on the OL. Let the players play their natural positions. Morgan might never be a solid LT, now. We saw what Rasheed Walker did to us in the playoffs. Penalty after penalty, being a sieve at LT, which allowed Love to get pressured and hit. We don't need that.

"But what about Jim Leonhard, I hear you screaming over there. Well, what about him? I kind of feel he has been totally over-hyped because of his Wisconsin roots"

Its funny to me when someone from outside of Wisconsin talks about us from Wisconsin wanting Leonhard to be the DC. Every time its 'you're a homer fan' or 'you only like him because he is from Wisconsin' or 'if he was from Iowa you wouldn't feel this way. I have seen all those plus many more.

Yes I'm from Wisconsin, and watched him play at UW, and watched him go undrafted and have a 10 year career. And then watched him go back to UW and become a coach and become a DC. Its a really cool story. But the thing of it is that I'm not Wilde. I'm not a story guy.

I watched what he did at UW. What kind of defense he created. I watched how in the 4 of his 5 years there he had a top 10 defense. the number 1 defense in one of those years. This was before NIL blew up college. This was when UW was taking 0-3 star players and developing them into NFL players. I watched Leonhard's passion and energy and what he brought to the team. There is a reason why I wanted him to be the coach. He is a tremendous one.

And for the record me wanting Leonhard and thinking he was the best candidate for the job, does not mean that I won't support Gannon. I like that he is a former HC and that he will have a new perspective on calling defenses. A lot of former HC's going back to DC's do well. I do think he will be good.

RC, you’re right about Leonhard. Many will see that he’ll get his DC job this year if he wants to make a move. In my opinion, it’s up to him. Did I want him as the Packers DC? Absolutely, but as you said, that’s because I got to see and talk to him firsthand—he’s got something special about him and is a proven winner in everything he’s done from a position of being overlooked. I’ll take an underdog winner any day and twice on Sundays!

I saw a lot of people saying he gave up his opportunity years ago. But look at Leonhards perspective. His family loves Madison. (they still live there). He was wanting to become the next HC. Which he became the interim and for whatever reason they decided to go in another direction. I don't blame him at all for staying there. I am willing to bet though, that Leonhard looks back wishing he would have taken it.

I believe he will be a DC this year. I have seen both Chargers and Bills are looking at him. I could also see him potentially taking over the Bills defense if Joseph gets a HC job.

He is definitely a proven winner. He went to a small town in Wisconsin to walking on at UW. He earned a scholarship his senior year. He goes undrafted, plays 10 years. He retired and goes to coach DB's at UW. I believe the next year he is the new DC. He then leads the defense to a top 10 unit in the nation. After being in Denver after 1 year he became assistant HC. He is a guy that is going to work his ass off to be the best he can be. You have to love that in a coach!

I don't care that he is from Wisconsin. Yes its a nice story but that isn't why I wanted him. Its because of seeing what he did as a DC at UW.

There was one game that I remember specifically. I believe it was against Purdue. But he sent his ILB (Leo Chenal) on a blitz over the Center. He smoked the center for an easy sack. What does he do the rest of the game. He put Chenal over the Center almost every play until they could stop it. They didn't. Chenal had like 3 sacks that game, and countless pressures.

That is just an example of what I like about Leonhard. When he found something that worked he kept attacking with it.

I’m not a particular advocate for Leonhard, but it does look very likely that he will be a DC this season. I suspect he was not just going to jump to join LaFleur. He may not have to leave Denver.

Lombardi got screwed because he couldn’t perform when it mattered with a back up. The anti LaFluer HC. It’s sounding like Leonhard may be the new DC. Perhaps he likes a HC who is ruthless in his pursuit of excellence as the guy to take his next step with?

I agree: I don't think that Mac would "backtrack" to Leonhard--that would be viewed as him admitting his mistake to a fan base who already doesn't trust him--and I don't think Leonhard will take the call from Mac. It's very possible that Mac gets swept out with Fickell, and a new AD might be able to make inroads with Leonhard at UW. My guess is that the shifting player $$ tides in college football will keep Leonhard in the NFL.

If you've seen Bucky's schedule this year, they go from playing virtually all the high-end teams last year to playing all the schleps this year. Several have new coaches and several have mined the portal pretty hard, but it's possible that Fickell has bought enough players to drum up enough wins to get to 2027. I think the DL still looks pretty pathetic, though...more like 2024 than 2025.

If we jump into the time machine and go a little ways back we can view the end of the 2021 season where Stenavich, Getsy and Hackett have just teamed with MLF and Rodgers to go 13-3. Hackett is off to become HC of the Broncos. MLF must choose between passing game coordinator Luke Getsy and OL coach Steno for OC. He promotes Steno and Luke is off to be OC with the Bears. Getsy and Hackett fizzle in grand fashion in their new roles.

Now, Steno, Getsy, Hackett and MLF are together again, as they were last season, with Getsy as Senior Offensive Asst, and Hackett as Consultant/Analyst for the D. The band has been put back together, but they can't play the hits or have lost the music. Maybe 12 took it with him when he left. Who knows?

If I go into cliche mode, it's rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic or seeing every problem as a nail when you only have a hammer. If nothing changes, nothing changes? It is what it is? Pick one or more, but as always, please no wagering.

I think about this a lot...I think the secret ingredient was Rodgers. Not just his talent but his intelligence. Its public record that he got Lafleur to change the playbook for him, and Rodgers clearly audibled out of a lot of stuff he didn't like. Bothered me at the time because the end result was always the same---Throw to Davante. But it was the era of peak Lafleur. Hell if Rodgers retires, they should bring him back as a consultant.

Then when Rodgers left, the illusion of complexity was shown to have never been real anyway and we transitioned to a run first O despite Love being a more obvious fit with a more expansive O and an OL that was no good at run blocking then either. That’s the only true LaFleur offense we’ve seen and it’s highlight was a short period where, in desperation, he just let Love loose in late 2023, only to rein it in since.

Who was the last OL player we saw develop significantly while still with us? At best they have been as good or bad as they came in and sometimes regressed.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s all I need to know to believe that, whatever else happens, Butkus should be gone and Stenavich with him. That Stenavich was a good technical coach at the OL level makes the failure worse not better, because it speaks even more clearly to his leadership decisions and focus.

It’s hard to see this roster getting a lot better this year if health is ignored. Golden may step up, but physically his doing what Doubs does is no slam dunk. If not, where does he fit and who makes up for Doubs’ departure?

It’s hard to see this OL being markedly better, even if we put Tom at LT and Morgan is real at RT. Perhaps Banks is a little healthier. Perhaps Belton improves now he’s not being forced to play T. Some improvement, largely due to not having to fight the coaches, but I don’t see a rookie savior as likely and this assumes we end up with an adequate C.

So this window is entirely based on the health of Kraft, Parsons, Tom and Watson being good all year? Meanwhile we seem set to change little in offense. Sorry, I think this team is in La La land and Policy conclusively proved it.

We have backed ourselves into a cap corner partly due to overestimating our roster, but mostly due to greatly overestimating our coaching prowess. We have been a draft and fail to develop team who have had several years not developing anyone. On top of that we have missed on too many early rounders. Faced with that we appear to have stuck our heads in the ground and just doubled down.

Gannon’s hiring is the least of our problems. We are a team that perennially produces defenses that attempt to keep opposing offenses on the field. That’s bend bit not break in a nut shell. We avoid big negative plays, but at the cost of putting ourselves in position to make them and too often at the cost of essentially conceding a lot of easy shorter ones. That’s been increasingly true of all DCs the longer they are here.

In the meantime we have an offense that seems to operate on a “just enough” basis. Partly that’s a result of being out of rhythm due to the D being out there too long, but it’s also an O design that arguably is better with the more limited Willis. One that can’t find a way to get Golden appropriately engaged, can’t figure out how to run block to an even close to an acceptable standard and hasn’t been able to for over half a decade.

That’s what we were re-enlisted for by Policy. It makes no sense. Gannon is walking into an organization that’s completely adrift from competitive reality and stretching the limits of physics with how far it over rates its achievements. That’s why so many things they are doing seem contrived or illogical. They are based upon the thin air of collective organizational delusion.

I think health will help. I think Detroit try very hard to rebuild that OL this off season. If they do they will bounce back.

I do not personally believe in Caleb Williams, I think teams will be better prepared for that O in year 2 of that coach/QB pairing, as is often the case. However, Chicago likely improved its D generally and rush yo offset the freakish turnover stats this year.

It’s going to be no cakewalk to finish above 3rd in the division and we have no cap or first round pick. I expect to hear Policy proclaim the 7th seed a real an achievement if we indeed do make it. If injuries hit again, I think we very well may not make it because we blow too many games we shouldn’t and are dependent on a few key individuals with a big drop off behind them.

8 years and Gute has built nothing.

With a little more cohesion on the O line, we can run the ball better which will keep our D off the field. Also, what about a powerful blocking fullback, we seemed to get away from that successful tradition.

Cohesion? It’s about the Jimmy’s and the Joe’s. Poor drafting equals no talent.

As far as comp picks go, we have alot of attractive players leaving that other teams will want. I don't completely understand how teams qualify for higher comp pick, but we have multiple guys who will get big paydays. It looks like we could be in line for 4 extra picks. It would be over the top great to see an extra 3rd rounder. More likely a 4th is the most we can hope for, but an extra 4th, 5th, 6th, and a 7th would make this draft very interesting for the Packers on draft weekend.

Even though it is a small sample size, I am surprised no one has thrown out the crazy possibility of resigning Willis and potentially trading Love. Frankly speaking, Willis has looked like the better QB albeit in limited games. He has been way more accurate in his passing, and his running and scrambling for extra time really adds something that Love just doesn't have. I am just throwing this out there for discussion, not to get 100 downvotes. Love has been good but not great. A would not label him a "Difference Maker."

What would we save by trading Love?
Is It even feasible with his contract?
What would we get offered back to trade him? It would seem to be alot.
How would it affect the salary cap and is it even a benefit?
I would think Willis will see $20 million per year from someone after the last 2 years.

Is trading Gary an option or will we just bite the bullet and release him? If so would we get anything for him?

We are going to have multiple new faces starting in GB next year. Are these even options?

Compensatory picks are based on contract price I do believe. We are projected to get a couple extra 7th round picks this year. Who knows what next year will bring.

The comp picks from this year's free agents will be for the 2027 draft, not this year's draft.

Nope.
The Packers are married to him for at least one more year. I don't know if it's possible to restructure in a way that would make a cut or trade palatable.

Love is the least of the Packers problems needing to be addressed. He had a productive year, even playing behind a discombobulated OL. Improve the OL the way the bares did and Love will be considered one of the elite in the NFL.

Willis played in a few games and that was it after getting injured as he played RB almost as much as QB. His play style was to take off running if his first read is covered. It worked fine until he was knocked out. With the size and speed on NFL defenses, your starting QB needs to be protected, not routinely exposed.

Will the OL be improved and built to play the best 5 in their best spots and develop cohesiveness in PRACTICE (which they rarely did this season with most of the OL with DNP or limited during prep week). Will they play games without the stupid in game rotations and make a decision who the best 5 are, not the favorite 5 or 6 or 7? Probably not.

The best indicator of future performance are past results. Status quo eventually gets you run over by the competition.

Adam Stenovich -

I have no clue if he is a good coach or a bad one. I think he is probably a good OL coach. But i have no proof of that either. For the offensive coordinator, he doesn't call plays. So what does he do during games? Is he helping figuring out what the defense is doing to make adjustments? The Bears game as mentioned is a great one to ask. If he is there to help make adjustments, he isn't doing a good enough job.

"Primary is his stubborn adherence to maximum versatility on the offensive line. There is little doubt he has stunted Jordan Morgan's development with bouncing him around multiple positions. This was your first round draft pick selected to be your left tackle of the future, yet for two years, you play him anywhere but that position. Anthony Belton is another case, although to a lesser extent. I still believe in prioritizing continuity on the offensive line."

This also bothers me. We clearly could see that Morgan is an OT only. Yet they kept playing him at Guard. He played at 4 positions this year. Most people early on thought that Belton would be better at G. Yet they didn't move him there until about a week before he started playing there. I don't want to blame Adam for all of that, but he plays a role in those decisions.

"while I wouldn't judge his coaching ability based on this, I really dislike his personality, which admittedly, I only get to see in his interactions with the media. He's often a bit smug and patronizing, and you can see he very much dislikes having to ask any questions, nevermind difficult questions. He has that "how dare you question me, you know nothing" vibe about him (i.e., the anti-Jeff Hafley). "

I think part of the reason why he hasn't been hired elsewhere is how it interacts with the media. When you see Hafley talk and then Adam gets up and speaks, its night and day. One thing that still rubs me the wrong way is how he talked about Golden at the end. I can't remember exactly how he said it, but it was kind of messed up what he said.

What bothers me about the LaFleur/Stenovich partnership is that I've seen too many scenes during football games where MLF abandons the sideline to sit on a bench reviewing plays on his tablet while trying to figure out how to move the ball against a defense (at least that's what I think he's doing). Every time I see this, I ask myself what the hell is Stenovich doing during this time? Isn't the the OC's job? The head coach needs to be on the sideline and in tune with the game and his players. WTF?

I'm not too concerned about not having the first round pick in the next two drafts. Heck, we haven't had a whole lot of impact out of our first rounders under Gute's tenure anyway. I think Gute and Ball can manipulate the salary cap well enough to add talent where it's needed. But, what do I know?

I have the exact same thought. It really felt this year that LaFleur was kind of all on his own with the offense. Its the first time I have really seen that. This should absolutely be where the OC comes in and says we need this set of plays or whatever.
The more I see and the more I think about this, i do think its time for a change at OC.

There should be little or no expectation of any meaningful changes from the Murphy-Gutekunst-LaFleur triumvirate- to - the Policy-Gutekunst-LaFleur one. That being so, the O-line, once again, becomes just a game of musical chairs. Moreover - what is more realistic to expect is the following end-of-season performance(s):
2025 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs
2024 0-1 - Lost Wild Card Playoffs
2023 1-1 - Lost Divisional Playoffs
2022 0-0 - no playoffs -
2021 0-1 - Lost Divisional Playoffs

If Jim Leonhard was that great, he'd already be a DC somewhere. Gannon was the better pick. Stenovich does not impress. Nobody is knocking on the door asking to interview him as their playcaller. There were 10+ openings, and he didn't receive a single interview.

It's not his fault we drafted Jordan Morgan, who is looking like a bust. He can't even beat Anthony Belton for the backup position. Gutey drafted a backup guard instead of an All-Pro safety in DeJean. You would think he would have remembered when the Packers drafted tackle Tony Mandarich instead of Barry Sanders, which was probably the worst drafting blunder. Mike Sherman trading up to draft a punter is up there, too. Morgan's college tape didn't look that good, and he played at Arizona.

The Packers are stuck with a cap problem and no RD1 picks for two years. They don't have a lot of options, so a magic wand may be their best bet.
