CheeseHeadTV Draft Predictions: 2021 Packers Round One

The CHTV Writers make their predictions for what the Packers will do with their first draft pick of 2021.

Here it is, the annual futile attempt at predicting who the Packers will pick in the first round. From my perspective, it's become much more difficult since Brian Gutekunst took over as GM. You could mostly count on Ted to make the logical pick at valued first round positions (EDGE/LB, DL, OT. ) In the 12 years that Thompson drafted a player in the first round, he selected 5 DL, 2 LB, and 2 OT). The only thing predictable about Gutekunst so far is that he falls in love with a player and will trade up to get him. Who that player might be is a total crapshoot to those of us not privy to his thoughts. But that won't stop us from trying, will it? So here we go, in no particular order:

Dusty Evely: CB Greg Newsome II

I've gone through more scenarios and have fell in love with more players than I care to admit. In this spot, I've had Elijah Moore and Kadarius Toney and Caleb Farley and Trevon Moehrig and Rondale Moore, among others. But, when all the dust settles, I believe Newsome is the guy (and not just because Craig Newsome is one of my favorite Packers). It's a rare pick where the best player available overlaps with a position of need. I believe Newsome will be an immediate contributor, with a good chance to become an absolute stud in year 2.

Cory Jennerjohn: LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah

Brian Gutekunst has a history of a no holds barred approach and it continues this year. He trades up to No. 25 for the Packers' No. 29, No. 135 (fourth round), No. 142 (fourth round), No. 214 (sixth round), No. 220 (sixth round) and No. 256 (seventh round) for Notre Dame linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

Brandon Carwile: CB Asante Samuel Jr

I gave Samuel a second-round grade, but picking Samuel at 29 is teetering between first- and second-round talent. The Packers seem to be high on the Florida State corner despite size limitations. He is similar to Jaire Alexander in his build, coverage ability, and confident demeanor. Why wouldn't Green Bay want two Alexanders in their secondary?

Ken Lass: DL Christian Barmore

The Packers stay at number 29 and select defensive lineman Christian Barmore, who will have drifted much further down the draft than expected.  Barmore is a classic boom or bust prospect, who is either going to be another Kenny Clark, or another Montravious Adams.

Sarah Kelliher: S Trevon Moehrig

He fits the mold of DB’s Green Bay has gone after in the past and would be a versatile player to complement Amos and Savage. I get a lot of Jaire vibes from him; young, speedy, physical and confident.

Maggie Loney: CB Greg Newsome II

The closer we get to the draft the more I think Gutekunst is going to trade up (maybe pick 21 with the Colts?) and grab one of the stud first-round corners. He's been aggressive in getting "his" guys each year, and I don't think this year is any different. While I think he double or even triple-dips at CB, Newsome II at 21 is way too good to pass up.

Paul Bretl: OT Liam Eichenberg

This feels even more difficult this year as the Packers can go in a number of directions with this pick but I’ll choose Liam Eichenberg, OT from Notre Dame. My gut says Teven Jenkins and Greg Newsome will be gone, but Eichenberg has size, athleticism, experience, is well-versed in both pass-pro and as a run-blocker, and he can start right away. He may never be a perennial Pro Bowler, but he can be a rock solid starter for a decade.

Gil Martin: CB Greg Newsome II

He has the size the Packers are looking for to start opposite Jaire Alexander, has NFL bloodlines and should be able to contribute right away and start very soon.

Bruce Irons: OT Samuel Cosmi

It's hard to tell what Gutey will do since he has a limited track record. I think cornerback and offensive tackles are their biggest needs, but by 29, there won't be as much differentiation at cornerback as there is at offensive tackle, so I think that's what he'll take. Cosmi may not have as many exciting pancake highlights as guys like Tevan Jenkins and Liam Eichenberg, but that's because he's not a road grader, he's a mobile zone blocker - and that's what the Packers need to run their offense.

Tim Backes: CB Greg Newsome II

It feels like there are about a billion different ways the Packers could go with this pick, but I'm going to throw out Greg Newsome as my prediction. Position of need, elite athlete, could well be available when the Packers pick in the first round. Placing him opposite Alexander would be *chef's kiss*.

Jersey Al: Trevon Moehrig, S

See my mock draft from yesterday.

Don't much like any of the CheeseheadTV Packer picks. CB Newsome is ok but I think you can get someone not much worse much later. Barmore has talent but scares me, I'm not sure his head is in the right place. Cosmi reminds me too much of another tackle, Spriggs.

I'd love OT Teven Jenkins but he's probably gone. Same with Zaven Collins, I'd take him if he's there. The most likely pick that should be there (and that I like) is DE Levi Onwuzurike. In a draft not filled with good D linemen we get one of them.

Heck, I'd even be fine with OC Creed Humphrey here (or Meinerz in round 2).

Still think we'll stay up late, only to learn Pack has traded down.

Still pulling for a DB, DT, OT, and Amari Rodgers falling to GB.

I would be ok with that. I would like to move back and up, and get two top 10- 2nd round picks as our first choices. This could bring us contributing CB and T. Tufele with 3rd, Avery Williams 5th, Jeremiah Haydel 7th or UDFA

If the Packers are on the clock at 29, I am hoping to see "There has been a trade". I'll get a good night sleep.

Super-Bowl or Bust. Barmore is the All-IN. And I hope Gute does it again in rd.2 with Alvin McNeil.

McNeil I would be happy with in 2/3. Barmore is not a pick that will take us much higher this year. Worst pick of the ones listed for real help this year.

I’d rather start a run stuffer this year. Can get them later. Stop the run now not in a year or two.

A stellar cornerback like Newsome and Samuel, or one of these top offensive tackles would be satisfying to me, and set a good tone for the rest of the draft.

There's a lot to be said, in my opinion, for a GM who really likes a player and trades up for him. However, it seems the Packers would do just fine letting the draft come to them.
In any case, I don't understand Cory trading six draft picks to move up from 29 to 25.

I hope everyone enjoys the football festival this weekend.

I'll go with the majority and say we either take Samuel or Newsome2. I like Samuel a little more, but Newsome2 has the height Gute may be looking for; I do worry about him a little bit early on because he may be grabby and penalty-prone, so that would have to be cleaned up.

I predict a total whiff by the Cheeseheadtv writers and the answer is “none of the above”.

IF you believe the Packers are trying to win the Super Bowl this year, then who is the ONE player who can improve our chances the most this year?

Eliminate the 5 QBs, eliminate the WRs, eliminate the edge rushers. Eliminate the top OTs and CBS.

Who’s left?

Moehrig, Samuel, Newsome, and some very good OTs. A starting OT would play more snaps.

It’ll be a blocker. If Rodgers has time to do his job, and there are holes for the RBs, this offense is unstoppable.

Mayfield, Leatherwood, Cosmi, Radunz, Eichenberg,.......

Editeditediteditedit

Crystal ball says Teven Jenkins drops to us, just like Bulaga did.

Comeback tomorrow? I wouldn’t if there is a premier player who has dropped. Newsome, Collins or JOK (whichever Barry feels fits), Moehrig, for example. I’m not sure that they will. Do not think a DT worth a first rounder will either.

I think the odds on us seeking to trade back are good given that about half the names above are second rounders. I’m less sure that others will take us up, unless one of the QBs drops. Maybe 15 - 20 premier types then a group of 30 to 40 similar level players.

GB trades up to the 20th place, and take a punter. GB gives up a 1st and a 4th round pick, and throw in Nags!!!

If the rumor is true. Rodgers should demand the trade to SF. Not just for the #3 and more. But why keep seeing the writing on the wall.

I like any of:
S Trevon Moehrig
DT Christian Barmore
CB Asante Samuel Jr.

Any of those three players are arguably worthy of the #29 slot. None of these players have made my lists of late, but they certainly could. Moehrig fits the new system perfectly. The Packers could possibly use another Safety, and one of the best from this draft should be a great addition to the Barry D. Barmore slots in very well next to Kenny Clark, and, Samuel Jr. would be LIGHTS OUT opposite Jaire Alexander. I don't see "size" as an issue with him like I do some other draftees.

I expect Moehrig and Barmore to be gone by 29, but Asante Samuel Jr. could jump into the 29, no problem. He'd be an exciting pick there for the Packers.

If we can’t get Newsome, Samuel seems like a second round talent to me. Do we reach? I’d take Moerhig over him. Collins too (I am dubious over JOK transitioning, but an option if Barry loves him). Think if Samuel came up as the highest rated at 29, trading back would be my first choice.

I agree, I think Newsome will be gone and Samuel is not as good.

I do like Moehrig.

Agree with leatherhead here. No idea what will happen; Guter is not a guy to play poker with. But I can guarantee the Packers first draft pick will not be a TE or RB.
What GB truly lacks vs. 49ers and Buc's ...is a monster in the middle and hope our Packers get a LB before day 3!

I think we found someone that has a lower opinion of Gute's draft impatience than me. 6 picks to move up 4 spots? Last year, the cost to move from 30 to 26 was just 136. I get that half of the 6 are in rounds 6 & 7, But even I don't think that Gute is that recklessly crazy impulsive in giving away picks to move up.

Personally would love to see Newsome in green & gold but think he's going to be gone by 29 and the only way the Pack gets him is to trade up. In a year with a lot of depth in Day 2, I'd rather see Gutey stay put or even trade down but if he ends up with Newsome or Bateman in a trade up, I'll take it. If we can't get Newsome at CB then I'd prefer he wait until Rd 2 or 3 to get a CB given the depth in this year's draft. If we stay put I'd be happy with one of these guys: S-Moehrig, OL - Tevin Jenkins, Vera-Tucker or Cosmi, WR - Elijah Moore or Rondale Moore. I personally don't love drafting a LB in the first BUT think Owsus-Koramoah from Notre Dame or Zaven Collins might make sense. I had been rooting for Caleb Farley to drop to us but his back had me getting nervous about him and now news that he tested positive for COVID makes me even more leery of him. I really DON'T want to see us drafting Barmore, Kadarius Toney, Dyami Brown, Jamin Davis or Landon Dickerson. Thanks for providing your predictions and looking forward to finding out if any of you are correct tonight.

I am guessing that the pick will be Caleb Farley. I think that he will fall in the draft and the re-signing of King gives us insurance if he's not ready to go. It's a huge boom or bust risk, but if our doctors clear him it is worth the risk.

My fear is we trade up and burn picks. I think that there's so much uncertainty of the players based on Covid that you have to go to the "more swings" approach.

My blow my mind pick would be Travis Etienne. He's great, but man that would create a collective WTF.

Since the Packers always go in the unexpected direction, I'll pick Kadarius Toney. If nothing else I'll be one of the few making this pick. Which one of the CHTV writers picked Jordan Love last year? I know somebody did.

Newsome and Barmore were on the do not draft list a day or 2 ago. Now some are saying we are going to take one of them in the 1st round!

I'm hoping for either a CB/DB or WR with our first pick. I'm not sure who will be available but one of those positions would be my preference because the better skill players are available early and we need better players at CB and for a #2 WR. Also hoping that we don't trade up and give away picks.

If anything trade down and wait for tomorrow. Thanks, Since '61

LMFAO at Jennerjon! Clueless!! To move up 4 spots and your giving up 2 4th, 2 6th and a 7th. Are you insane?!!! To take an ILB that's to small. Sure he's a hybrid player, but he's also not a CB or even a Safety.

Proving Clueless over and over again!

I'm betting that considering todays events the Packers will draft a WR at #1 and maybe even trade up to do so.

I think that this was Rodgers true intent yesterday. He didn't decide he wanted out on draft dray. He wanted to force the Packers into accepting that he should have a say in roster building and went the diva star route to do it. He'll be forever tainted as a player in my eyes.

Like Favre, the play on the field and career stats speak for itself. But like Favre, in the end, it was all about him and not about the team. Which makes me believe it was like that for a lot longer than just the end.
