3 Objectives for Matt LaFleur and the Packers Offense

What Matt LaFleur should be focusing on when it comes to improving the Packers offense.

The Green Bay Packers hired head coach Matt LaFleur because he is supposed to be one of the next great offensive minds such as Sean McVay or even a Sean Payton before him.

Ever since Ron Wolf came aboard in 1992, the Packers have tended to lean towards offensive-minded head coaches. There was Mike Holmgren and outside of Ray Rhodes, the others -- Mike Sherman and Mike McCarthy have all been offensive guys. So too is LaFleur, who has spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator for the Rams and Titans before ascending to head coach in Green Bay.

LaFleur's charge is a relatively simple one. He needs to get Aaron Rodgers back to being Aaron Rodgers. That more than anything else is why the Packers hired him. He's the bright mind that can remove Rodgers from the boredom and poor play that haunted him in 2018.

Truthfully, Rodgers didn't play poorly this past season. He threw for 4,442 yards, tossed 25 touchdown passes and threw just two interceptions. He completed 62.3 percent of his passes, averaged 7.4 yards per attempt and had a passer rating of 97.2. But something wasn't right.

Rodgers was sacked way too much and 25 touchdown passes isn't a very high number. He didn't throw guys open as much this year and he didn't make as many head-turning plays. For whatever reason, he wasn't in sync with his receivers and the offense never seemed to have any rhythm.

With Mike Pettine kept on to run the defense, the dynamic in Green Bay will be much the same as it was before. A head coach and a guy that oversees the offense, along with basically a head coach of the defense in Pettine. Certainly, LaFleur will have input on that side ball but mostly, his job is to turn this offense back into one of the NFL's best and here is a look at three things he needs to do.

1. Get Rodgers back to being the best

More than anything, this is what LaFleur was hired to do. Rodgers may not be able to do all the things he could just a few years ago, but that doesn't mean he's not still an elite thrower of the football. He still has great arm strength, tremendous accuracy and isn't the worst athlete.

He may never be able to make all the throws that he did during the first Super Bowl run, but in terms of arm talent, I don't see much drop off. Where I saw the dropoff was consistency last season. Rodgers wasn't sharp and often times couldn't find any type of success until the second half or when the Packers were behind.

There were very few times when the offense started fast and put it on teams early like the Packers used to be known for doing. The was their modus operandi, get the lead early and then pressure your offense into mistakes.

The Packers could use some more weapons, especially at tight end and who knows what will happen with Randall Cobb, but Marquez Valdez-Scantling has a chance to be a legit deep threat and you have to like what you saw in limited action from Equanimeous St. Brown and also Jake Kumerow.

Think about all the times Rodgers missed Valdez-Scantling when he was wide open down the field. It happened on multiple occasions and it could have turned his 581 receiving yards into a lot more. But with Rodgers, Davante Adams and David Bakhtiari, the Packers have great building blocks if they can get No. 12 humming again.

2. Get the most out of Aaron Jones/Jamaal Williams

Despite having a couple of pretty talented running backs, Green Bay ranked 21st in rushing yards. When you look at the job McCarthy did last season, one of the biggest indictments has to be not getting Jones the ball enough.

Even though the second-year running back was clearly one of the most talented players on the team offensively, he was only given 20 or more touches on three occasions. He never got 20 carries in a game and for some reason, the Packers didn't throw to him enough either.

On top of that, Williams also flashed some potential at times like the Week 16 game against the Jets, when he ran for close to 100 yards. With Williams ability to pound it between the tackles and Jones explosiveness, the Packers shouldn't have been No. 22 running the ball.

This is another big bonus with LaFleur. He got a lot of Derrick Henry (1,058 yards, 12 touchdowns) and along with Dion Lewis, the Titans had the No. 7 run game in the NFL.

Green Bay needs to find a legitimate starting guard and at least a competent swing tackle if the Packers want to keep Bryan Bulaga. But given that, this running game should be much more dynamic and LaFleur needs to see to that.

3. Protect Aaron Rodgers

This sounds simple but the Packers absolutely have to find a way to protect Rodgers. If you think about it, he suffered a near season-ending injury in 2013, 2017 and also was injured in 2014 and 2018. This past season, he took 49 sacks and was sacked on seven percent of his throws.

Those numbers are outrageously bad. The offensive line isn't horrible either but some changes need to be made. Left tackle and center are set. Beyond that, there are question marks even with Lane Taylor, although he is an average starter.

Finding a good offensive line coach is going to be key and establishing a legitimate run game would also alleviate a lot of pressure from Rodgers. More than anything though, the Packers have to scheme protection better.

McCarthy had a lot of confidence in his tackles and that's fine when they can do the job. But he didn't adjust well without them at times, especially last season. With screens, misdirection, draws and other different concepts, such as going no-huddle, the Packers could have done a better job of neutralizing other teams pass rushers.

That's another big item on the list for LaFleur. If the Packers can keep Rodgers upright, then he is going to play better football and if he gets back to playing at a high level, the entire Packers offense will too.

I think Chris is spot on that "Protecting" the QB has to be multifaceted.

1. More fast developing plays and more diversity.
2. Rodgers throwing the ball on time and minimizing risk he takes his self.
3. Better OL line play.

If not 1 or 2, but especially if not 3, LaFleur better be a QB whisperer for QB2 and QB3, as Rodgers won't last the season. I believe that we aren't as far away as many, but I believe if we are to be a playoff winning team next year it will be due to 1) great draft, 2) coaching up the newbies for large in-season improvement, 3) bigger jumps by 2nd/3rd year players, and 4) no injuries.

I am a fan of Aaron Jones, but I am not sure he is an every down work horse type back. J. Williams really strikes me as more of a fullback than a running back. I think the Packers will need to add another RB to this mix to have an effective rushing attack (along with fixing the O-line).

Wha? He’s no where near big enough to be a fullback. Jones and Williams are enough to create a potent running game unless you just want to add another back for depth that’s fine but their collective talents is definitely good enough to be a threat. Hopefully MLF can utilize both of them in games instead of the “eeny meeny miney moe” approach MM had.

I know he is not big enough, but his play reminds me of a fullback - good blocker, straight ahead runner, etc. etc. I think we need one more RB with some of Jones's characteristics. Right now, if Jones goes down, our rushing threat becomes very pedestrian.

I think you're right: they'll need a 1b to go with Jones' 1a. I don't know if that's Williams, but he has shown a knack for catching the ball, blocking, and fighting for tough yards. They're complementary backs, but I think Williams will be a guy who gets things done but always leaves you feeling you could do a little bit better.

"Truthfully, Rodgers didn't play poorly this past season."

If one thing needs to be clear in achieving an understanding between Rodgers and LaFleur, before any headway is to be made for the offense, is stopping the rhetoric bs of the the sentence above.
If they approach each other based on this denial that appears to be with writers and fans, you'll be watching a lot more of Rodgers on field gestures of disgust.

Stats never tell the whole truth but they are achieved even under the poorest play.

Taryn I agree that AR was mediocre, but the stats can tell you the story. You just need to look at the correct statistics. He was only ranked in the middle of the pack of NFL starters by the metrics that are correlated with QB success, like 13th in QB Rating, 17th in yards per attempt.

Stats reinforce our eye test, AR was a mediocre QB this season.

I refer you to the first part of my last sentence,

" Stats never tell the whole truth".......

They do support the eye test but my point is most use the stats to cover/ignore/deny a lot of what the eyes have seen.
, as with the statement referred in my comment.

Absolutely spot on Tf12. Rodgers was simply average this year. Multiple missed throws almost every game; ones he could make in his sleep most other years. For 30MM, his performance was not acceptable, regardless of whether he liked the play call or not.

AR is going to need to find a new trick. Teams have caught on to his escape up the middle of the pocket and have clogged those escape routes. It's time to play in the pocket and throw on rhythm and quit trying to extend every play.

It is a real possibility that LaFleur doesn't do anything special, AR just plays to his abilities, and LaFluer comes off next year as looking like a genius. :-)

I do feel that if Rodgers is healthy he will be better. I do question how much his injury impacted him this last year.
Scheme change should also help him. Going into a scheme that actually schemes guys open and uses misdirection and motion to create hesitation with the offense should really improve the offense.
Rookies WR's not being rookies anymore is another thing that will help Rodgers.

Getting Rodgers back to his MVP level is job 1.

Job 2 is getting the RB's more involved. Jones is scary good but might have some durability issues? He has missed some time. Regardless he is a weapon. Getting him the ball in space should be a priority.
This also means retraining Rodgers to know its ok to hand the ball off more and its ok to throw the ball to his RB's.

Job 3 is getting Rodgers to buy into getting the ball out faster. Holding onto the ball when there are open receivers and taking unnecessary hits has doomed him the last couple of years. Get the ball out faster and allow the receivers to gain the yards. Getting him to be more decisive would return him to his MVP level.

Job's 2 & 3 should also help protect Rodgers. If he gets the ball out faster and hands the ball off more the less shots he will take. Rodgers needs to be protected from himself at times. He can make the great plays, but its the good & smart plays he needs to be better at.

Need to protect AR better...must run the ball more...need the offense to get in rhythm...etc. and etc. How many times are you going to rehash the obvious? Sure, Lafleur will bring a fresh approach to the offense but so what? Why is no one talking about using a first round pick on the OL? You want the offense to be better then priority number one has to be getting a RT and RG. It's not rocket science it's football ! Fix the offensive line and the offense will take care of itself !

Rodgers numbers were average for Aaron Rodgers but many quarterbacks in the NFL never achieve those numbers , let’s not forget he had 2 new tight ends and 4 young receivers to bond with.

This1000%.

Hard to throw a WR open when they don’t know to come back for the ball. Or fully understand what to do when a play breaks down. And the running game absolutely needs help. A good running game isn’t based off deception. A good running game is when the other team knows your going to run, they stack the box with 8 and they cannot stop it anyway. We don’t have an RB on the roster that commands that type of respect. Regardless of how well Jones and Williams can play....other teams were able to stop them with 4 to 6 on the LOS. Jones breaks out... but he isn’t a shove it down your throat 3 down back.

Offense needs to be rebuilt.

1 - Improve the OL;
2 - Draft a 2-way TE by pick 45;
3 - Acquire a veteran WR who is ready for prime time;
4 - Acquire a big bruising RB to team with Williams/Jones

New system will take pressure off of 12. Young WRs and questionable WR coach held offense back this year, along with injuries to Allison and Cobb. Graham was a disappointment.

But, like most Packer fans, I want #1A pick to be an edge pass rusher. 1B could be a S or TE. 2 would have to be a TE or S depending on 1B. 3 and two 4s could be 3 nice OL.

"4 - Acquire a big bruising RB to team with Williams/Jones"

Mark Ingram/Alvin Kamara
Devonta Freeman/Tevin Coleman
A couple examples of those effective 1-2 punch RBs who can run and catch where neither is a prototypical power back. Williams gives the Packers a lot of what they need in that second RB...I think we all just wish he was quicker and more elusive in the open field.

There's a lof of work ahead for MLF to get the Packers back on track to being contenders. And certainly a top priority is to protect AR and getting some help on the OL. Going to a shorter passing game and quicker releases will keep the sticks moving. They have some good talent to develop a good ground game. Changes are coming and hopefully MLF can get a good coaching staff and bring it all together and turn things around. Time will tell. A good draft and some quality FA"s will go a long way to making that happen.

I would like to see more throws to Jones. He seems like a competent pass catcher and get him out in the open field with the ball where he can do some real damage.
