As I mentioned on #PackersDaily yesterday, I just KNEW they'd put the Packers on Thanksgiving. Along with a New Years Eve game...I hate it.
Another early bye is also unfortunate but I like that they'll get 10 days prior to playing the Chiefs.
I don't know about you guys, but looks like 17-0 to me.
Go Pack Go.

I'm sure they'll get flexed into a bunch more prime time games as well as games of the week on Suday afternoons.

A bye week #6 may not be too bad. Young team and QB will need a little time to grow and play as a unit. I expect the first few games will be the hardest, so an early bye could benefit them. I think the team will play better during the 2nd half of the season. Tougher games will be Chargers, Lions, Vikings, Chiefs, and Giants.

May 11, 2023 at 11:06 am
I was thinking along those same lines, packer132!
For a young team, that early bye could prove to be a good thing. A chance to either reset, or expand scheme offerings as needed certainly could prove helpful. Reenforce some expectations. Give the players a bit of time to work on things/mentally prepare for that next 11+ game stretch.

I've always thought the late bye was overrated, period. So often a team needs a breather early in the season--a chance to reset before things spin out of control.

Starting out with the first two games on the road could be a bit rough. The Packers have a good number of prime time games. I hate Thanksgiving Day games and any TNF games period. At least the Packers will have a mini bye before the Chiefs game at Lambeau. The bye week is a little early but at least close to mid-season. If the Packers stay healthy we'll be in it all season.
The biggest test will come against the defending SB Chiefs. That game will be a measuring stick towards how far or close the Packers are against the defending SB champs and also how far Love has come since his first start against the Chiefs in 2021.
I won't make any predictions on the season until I see how the roster shakes after the preseason is completed and prior to Week 1 of the regular season.
We are going to learn plenty about this team, MLF and Love as this season progresses. Looking forward to it. Thanks, Since '61

May 11, 2023 at 08:35 am
I think this is more about how MLF builds and uses his team this year, than how good a QB Love is, don't you? Coaches dream about having the talent and young raw material MLF has.
SicSemperTyrannis
May 11, 2023 at 09:19 pm
Dream talent, yes. JL10 doesn't need to be a superstar from day 1. If he can quickly grow into a competent Jimmy G role just operating the O he'll be fine. Can add flash as they gel.

I was surprised by the five prime time games, too. I enjoy watching other teams play on Thanksgiving, but Packers - Lions in Detroit makes me queasy already. Alex Karras is dead, right?
I like the opener against the Bears in Chicago; the longest rivalry in the NFL with new rosters. Should be fun.
Since'61
May 11, 2023 at 08:45 am
Yes Leotis, I've disliked Thanksgiving Day games since the 1962 Thanksgiving Day loss to the Lions in 1962. I still believe that if Lombardi had the full week to prepare for that game the Packers would have been undefeated in 1962.
As it was the Packers were 13-1 in the regular season and they defeated the NY Giants 16-7 to win the NFL Championship. Probably Lombardi's best team during his time in Green Bay. Led by Paul Hornung on offense and Ray Nitschke on defense the 1962 Packers were the #1 ranked offense and the #1 ranked defense in the league. The Packers +267 point differential was the largest point differential for any team for the entire decade of the 1960s. One of the greatest seasons in the history of the league.
Yes, Alex Karras has passed. He was quite a character and a tough, tough player. Thanks, Since '61
Johnblood27
May 11, 2023 at 06:13 pm
If only Fuzzy's Mom didn't pass that week, the team might have had the focus to get the job done.
That was the week the line invented the "Look Out" block. 11 sacks by the Lions in that game! Poor Bart, he got crushed.
Since'61
May 11, 2023 at 10:16 pm
Johnblood27 the Lookout block was created by Jerry Kramer specifically. He was playing with bruised ribs and Karras knew about Kramer's injury. He would get in close to Kramer on his pass rush and hit Kramer in his ribs. After a couple of shots Kramer would push Karras away and yell "Look out Bart" as Karras ran by him.
Other Packer OLs picked up the call if their defender got by them.
Coach Lombardi said after the game; "I take all the blame for that one, it was coaching stupidity."
After watching some of the decisions by MLF and Barry over the last few seasons I'm thinking Lombardi's comment is much more appropriate for MLF and his staff. Thanks, Since '61

Two weak road opponents to start--although both teams added some pieces in FA, so they're going to be a tough scout. That pushes home games to Lambeau in the cold...although it hasn't been THAT cold at Leambeau for the most part.
"I was surprised by the five prime time games, too."
Packers are a national draw. They'll get a year or maybe two grace period post ARod to show they can generate ratings. For those of us outside the GB market, it sure helps in terms of finding the games.

They are a draw. But, lets remember that 2 of the SNF games are in December. Those could be flexed out. And they could also they could flex other games in as well.

Good post Dobber. The Packers have usually received good coverage here in the tri-state NYC area. However here in the Northeast when the Packers went bad during the 70s/80s they didn't get much exposure here. But since the Wolf/Holmgren era the Packers have received great coverage here.
Nationally the Favre/Rodgers eras have been responsible for doubling the number of Packers fans nationwide and the TV coverage has reflected the Packers national and even global coverage.
How long that will last if the Packers go on a longer term downturn is anyone's guess. Let's enjoy it while we can.

I'll make a way too early prediction:
7-10.
I reserve the right to update once rosters are set.
I'm hoping for better record but will consider the season a success if we see real development by all 1st and 2nd year players.
Year over year and start of season to end of season development.
Coaches have to take ownership of their groups. Solid plan going into each game and ability to adjust as game unfolds.
No more predictability.
Very much looking forward to 2023/24.

6 wins matches AR12's first year as a starter. This is the first season in forever with no pressure for a SB. I just want to see everybody play well and that "draft and develop" idea in action!
Next there will still be some cap hell, right? All 3 phases should gel better, maybe some change at RB and coaches. Get that sorted and JL's 3rd season as a starter is when this group will (hopefully) really pay off, be competitive, maybe even dominate. GPG!

But I'll lose that excitment of unknown result.
On the other hand I understand excitment of US residents for evening games.

Just 8 noon games...but at least 5 at Lambeau. The other 9 games: Sunday, Monday, Thursday night and Thanksgiving late morning to assist with the NFL's goal to saturate the week.
As a Green Package Season Ticket holder...hope to get at least 4 of the nooners. I enjoy the noon contests.

LP! Not sure why, but I hear “Noon games,” and I immediately think of Jim & Max!
Two of the best Packers game announcers, ever.
dobber
May 11, 2023 at 08:55 am
Jim and Max were fun to listen to, but were pretty unsophisticated in their game call. Wayne and Larry are pretty good.
LeotisHarris
May 11, 2023 at 03:09 pm
Larry has been a huge improvement over Max (although I do miss Max's homespun witticisms), but I'll take Jim's authentic enthusiasm over Wayne's amped-up-well-rehearsed schtick any day. Wayne's also losing the ability to provide accurate information; count the number of "beg your pardon" and "no, that was ___" on the next broadcast. Sometimes it's best to get rid of a play-by-play man a year early rather than two years too late. Or something.

Just my initial thoughts on the schedule.
When i look at the schedule the first thing I look for is the bye week. Then I usually look for the Thursday and Monday games. After that I look at the home/away games and how they flow. How many long distance back to back games they have.
First thing, bye week being week 6. That is borderline too early. i prefer week 8 or after. Last year was too late.
Next Thursday and Monday games. They have 4 Thursdays and Mondays this year. I don't like that there are 2 Thursday games. Thursday games are hard to play. Mondays aren't so bad. But interesting after their first Thursday game they have a Monday night game, followed by the bye.
As for the flow of the games. Looking at this, this is much better then last year. Last year I remember they were in 5 different cities in 5 weeks. This year seems to be much better. They don't have a lot of long distance travels back to back.
They start off with 2 road games which isn't ideal for a brand new QB. But its against the Bears and Falcons, so that isn't horrible. They have back to back road games 3 times this year. Though one of them is between the bye week. I don't like the back to back bye games in weeks 16 and 17. I like having as many home games in December as we can get.
It is interesting that they play the Bears in week 1 and Week 18. It will be interesting to see how both teams change from week 1 to 18.
Currently the Packers have 6 primetime games. I count thanksgiving day as a primetime game. They have 2 2:25 gams and the rest are noon games. A lot of those can change as the season goes on.
Overall with how the schedule flows. I'm good with it!

"First thing, bye week being week 6. That is borderline too early. i prefer week 8 or after. Last year was too late."
I've heard rumors that Rashan Gary is ahead in his rehab and might play right away, but--if not--I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers slow-walk him to game action this year by putting him on the PUP and taking advantage of that early bye to bring him back up to speed. That would put him at about a year post-injury.

I know I'm in a minority here, but I actually love watching the Packers on Thanksgiving Day. All of my relatives are way, way, out of state so I'm just cooking for two. Having a Packers game gives me something to look forward to on Thanksgiving. Living in Tucson the 7 pm games are earlier for me, so I like those too. I'm more worried about the noon games as FOX likes to show the AZ Cardinals instead of the Packers and I typically can only listen to those games on Sirius (at least it's usually the Packer feed). I've been ready to move on from Rodgers for several years and can't wait to see our "new" young team! GPG!

Spock, my wife and I miss living in the Southwest with its landscapes and cultures, including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Espanola in New Mexico, plus Pagosa Springs in Colorado.
Her father, from the Norton family, grew up on a ranch in the area of Tuscon, but raised his family in and around Los Angeles.
***
Anyway, about four years ago we moved (from Idaho) to the Southeast, about an hour north of Atlanta, to be near our two daughters and their families -- and it's very nice, although not our preference.
If we had the energy, there's a good chance we'd move back to the high desert of northern New Mexico.
Anyway, another thing I really miss is Mountain Time. It was so nice when the night games for the NFL aired at about 6 p.m. instead of about 8 p.m.
In Eastern Time, these Packers games don't end until about 11 p.m., and by the time I'm done ventilating and venting here at CHTV, and finally calm down, it's getting rather late for this old-timer.
Oh well, at least the prime-time games allow us out-of-towners to enjoy the Packers games on national television without a possible conflict from local teams (in New Mexico, it was irritatingly the Cowboys and Broncos, in Idaho, annoyingly the Seahawks).
Finally, all the best to you, Spock. Paz!

I don't think it's a terribly daunting schedule. They get the short end of the home/road schedule that comes from 17 games. The Packers are playing a big swath of the "meh" teams in the NFL.

When I look at the schedule, I look to see the games I think may be absolute losses... The only game it looks like we can't win is the Chiefs game, but it is at home, I feel better about our chances against the Chiefs, too.

The Thanksgiving game should be changed. In no other sport does a team get an automatic 2 game advantage in the schedule, and when there's only 17 games, that equivalent to 20 games in baseball, or 10 in basketball.
You're at home on a short week and the other team has to travel. Advantage. Then you have 10 days to prepare for the next game. Advantage. Why?
If you want to keep giving that advantage to the Lions and Cowboys, then they should have to play the Thanksgiving game on the road, or you could schedule their opponents to have the week off before to prepare..
T7Steve
May 11, 2023 at 10:44 am
It's all about ratings. Players and teams don't matter. Last season's London game for example. What a stretch. That was partly MLF's fault though, because he didn't want such an early bye.

May 11, 2023 at 11:14 am
If the players and teams don't matter, then that's even more reason to quit giving this advantage every year to the Lions and the Cowboys.

The silver lining of a 3rd place finish. Looks like a pretty doable schedule to break in a new QB1.
I read recently that the inaugural "Black Friday" game appears this year. What's next...a "Taco Tuesday" game? A "Wet T-Shirt Wednesday" game? I really miss the old Sunday/Monday night schedule. The almighty dollar rules. The hell with player safety.

For a retooling team, this seems to be ideal...not to be overconfident, but this almost seems like a cupcake schedule compared to some we've had in the recent past. We even get the Chiefs at home. I'm not complaining at all--and no mid-morning games across the pond!

Based on last season's records, Packers have 9th easiest schedule over all. Also easiest of the North teams.
Last season is indicative but the trip from worst to first is a short journey in the NFL.
However for the sake of Love, on paper, the first 5 games before the bye are teams they should play well against.

Even though The Packers have been getting screwed by the NFL and not getting a home opener, I like that they are opening on the road. I think it's better for a young team. They should be more relaxed than at home. I also HATE TNF and think they should end it for every week and only have a couple of special games a year. I am surprised the Packers have so many prime time games considering AR is no longer on the team since he was the draw.
