2020 Green Bay Packers Season Awards

The Green Bay Packers had another successful season, going 13-3-0 for the second straight year and once again reaching the NFC Championship Game before falling short in heartbreaking fashion. Make no mistake, the 2020 team was even better than the 2019 squad and featured the league’s top scoring offense.

Here is a look at the Packers superlatives for 2020, both good and bad. These are my very unofficial awards for the 2020 Green Bay Packers along with why each player deserved to win. Feel free to comment and nominate your own winners:

Team MVP: Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers is the likely league MVP and there is no doubt he is the Packers team MVP. The team’s franchise quarterback had a bounce back year, throwing 48 touchdown passes and just five interceptions.

Rodgers felt much more comfortable in Matt LaFleur’s offense in his second season working with the new coach. He was running the offense like a master technician and did an excellent job of calling audibles and mixing run and pass most of the season.

Rodgers led the NFL in touchdown passes and quarterback rating. He also averaged 9.6-yards per attempt which was also tops in the league.

At the age of 37, Rodgers remains one of the best quarterbacks in the league and the Packers would not be Super Bowl contenders without him.

Offensive Player of the Year: Davante Adams

Adams lifted his game to another level and is now one of the best if not the best receivers in the NFL. Adams caught 115 passes for 1,374 yards and a league-high 18 touchdowns. The 115 receptions surpassed the franchise record set by Sterling Sharpe back in 1993.

The former Fresno State alum accomplished all this despite missing two full games and part of another due to injuries.

Adams is not the fastest receiver in the league and not the biggest, but he uses his outstanding footwork and body control to gain an advantage on defenders in the first few steps after the snap of the ball. His football intelligence and work ethic help make him one of the most consistent weapons in the game.

Adams also has outstanding chemistry with Rodgers which helps make this duo one of the most dangerous in the game today.

Defensive Player of the Year: CB Jaire Alexander

While several players had strong seasons on defense, one player was outstanding from start to finish and that was cornerback Jaire Alexander.

Alexander had only one interception during the regular season but he earned Pro Bowl honors for his outstanding performance in coverage. The former first round pick out of Louisville became a shutdown corner who rarely gives up big plays or very much at all.

According to pro-football-reference.com, opposing quarterbacks completed just 51.3 percent of their passes when throwing to receivers covered by Alexander and they averaged just 9.1 yards per completion against him. Both of those were career lows. Opposing quarterbacks had a rating of just 67.4 when throwing to receivers guarded by Ja’Money.

Alexander is confident, quick and smart and he can still get better. He was the Packers defensive MVP this year.

Most Valuable Free Agent: OT Rick Wagner

This category only includes offseason free agent signings not undrafted free agents or midseason street free agent pickups.

Unlike 2019, the Packers didn’t make as many impact free agent signings this offseason. They added three and one of them, wide receiver Devin Funchess, opted out of the season because of Covid-19.

Offensive tackle Rick Wagner was the best of the remaining two signees. Wagner provided the Packers with steady and gritty play at right tackle. He played in all 16 games despite suffering several nagging injuries over the course of the season and started nine of those games.

Like many offensive linemen on this team this season, Wagner played multiple positions when injuries hit the team. He started at both right and left tackles, played a little bit at guard and even filled in as a blocking tight end in a game Marcedes Lewis missed.

Wagner filled in admirably and provided the Packers with steady and solid play for most of the season. For this, he earned the free agent of the year award.

Special Teams MVP: K Mason Crosby

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much competition for this award. Crosby struggled through injuries and Covid-19 this year and became the first Packers kicker who had enough attempts to qualify to have a perfect season kicking field goals.

Crosby struggled on extra points, missing four of his 63 tries on the season.

This season, the Colorado alum scored 107 points, the 13th time he topped 100 points in his 14 NFL seasons. He now has 1,682 career points, by far the most in franchise history.

Most Improved Player: TE Robert Tonyan

Tonyan took over the starting tight end position from the departed Jimmy Graham. He went from an unknown at the start of the season to a player who was robbed of a Pro Bowl berth by season’s end.

Tonyan finished the season with 52 catches for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, those 52 receptions came on just 59 targets and his catch percentage was 88.1. A total of 33 of his catches resulted in first downs.

By the end of the season, Tonyan was considered a reliable target and had earned the trust of his quarterback. The Packers no longer have a question mark at this position.

Biggest Disappointment of the Year: ILB Christian Kirksey

The Packers signed Kirksey to replace Blake Martinez who left via free agency during the offseason. Kirksey had played under Mike Pettine before in Cleveland, but he got off to a shaky start to the season and did not provide the Packers with the impact they had hoped for early on.

Kirksey was injured in the Week 3 win in New Orleans and missed the next five games as a result. Eventually, Kirksey lost some playing time to rookies like Barnes and Kamal Martin and he lost his play calling responsibilities.

In the final few weeks of the season, Kirksey’s play did improve. He had two sacks in the final two games of the season and picked off two passes for the season. His future in Green Bay is up in the air after a disappointing season.

Rookie of the Year: ILB Krys Barnes

Barnes was an undrafted free agent out of ULCA who was cut by the team after training camp and added to the practice squad. But he was activated for Week 1 and ended up starting 10 games for the Packers this season.

Barnes doesn’t have prototypical size for the inside linebacker position, but he’s smart, anticipates well and has the toughness needed to play the position.

By the end of the season, Barnes started 10 games, took over as the team’s play caller on defense and was in on 80 tackles including five tackles for loss and one sack.

He returned to the playoff game against the Rams after breaking his thumb and played with that injury in the NFC Championship Game. Barnes is a hitter and an intelligent football player who is making a name for himself after his rookie season.

Unsung Hero: The Offensive Line

Offensive linemen rarely get credit but the Packers unit came through with a great season under difficult conditions. The line had to play through multiple injuries which started in Week 1 when Lane Taylor was lost for the season and never let up.

Billy Turner, Elgton Jenkins, Rick Wagner and Lucas Patrick all played multiple positions during the season. Rookie Jon Runyan filled in during there different games when injuries forced the team to juggle the lineup and he did well.

Three members of this unit earned postseason honors with Corey Linsley, David Bakhtiari and Jenkins all getting recognition.

The Packers led the league in scoring and that would never have happened if not for the strong play of the offensive line.

I can't argue with any of these picks. I suppose I could, but I've lost some of the passion, temporarily. It'll be back come draft time. GPG

Yeah, another successful REGULAR season....I'm sensing contentment here, along with an attempt to pacify the fan base by rehashing the better moments of that season. Sure, the Packers exceeded the expectations at the beginning of the season, but those expectations changed in January.

I was really hoping for a more forward-looking article; we're going to be doing some significant transitioning with personnel, and we've already started with the coaching staff. And we need to get to the bottom of what it will take for this team to advance to the next level.

I will be doing plenty of articles about the offseason in the coming weeks and months, but I wanted to wrap up the season that was first. As you said, it was a disappointing end to a very successful regular season. I hope the offseason brings changes for the better but it won't be easy with the cap crunch the team is under. Thanks for commenting, splitpea1.

Right now I'm less concerned about the cap and more concerned about the performance of the lead coaches (not the position ones) in regards to strategic awareness, creativity, preparation and attention to detail, and the determination to do whatever it takes to take that next step forward. For the most part, I think we had the talent this time and we certainly had the right circumstances as far as home field--just some bad decisions and lack of making a couple normally routine plays.

Agreed. And I think changes are coming. We already changed special teams coordinators. I don't know if Pettine will be back. Hopefully, upgrades in the coaching staff will make for different results. Thanks for the comment, splitpea1.

That is a pretty good list Gil. For me my Biggest Disappointment has to be Preston Smith. Not sure if he wasn't in shape for most of the season, but he appeared that way. Failed to maintain contain on too many occasions and too many offsides with some coming at the worst time.

I agree , we could have used last year's Preston against TB. I wonder if he will be a cap casualty.

It's possible if the team is desperate enough for cap space. I hope it doesn't come to that. Thanks for the comment, PeteK.

We could have used last year's Zadarius and Presto n. And not just vs TB, but all year. Neither was nearly as productive. As I mentioned all year, playing with more gap discipline affected pass rush win rate. Its an unavoidable truth.

He had a very rough start to the season but did improve late when it seemed Gary was threatening to take his starting job away. He needs to step up big time next year and return to his 2019 form. Thanks for commenting, TheKanataThrilla.

What makes you sure he'll have a next year in GB? He'll probably have to take a payout to stay in GB.

It's hard to argue with any of the selections, but I'd split two hairs.

Big year for Davante, but AR was also offensive player of the year.
For unsung hero, I may spotlight Jenkins specifically.

Overall, nice column - and a very good year!

Thanks, Philarod. Yeah, I know regarding offensive player of the year, but I didn't want to give all the accolades to AR. And Jenkins would have been my pick if I had to name one player, but so many guys along that line really did yeoman's duty so I tried to recognize them all. Thanks for the comment.

I'll take Rodgers as the MVP. Not Adams. It's not even close.

It is not that Gill said Adams is MVP of the team - he is Offensive player of the year. Aaron is MVP. So I do not understand why are you complaining!

Thanks for commenting, stockholder. Rodgers was the team MVP but I wanted to find a way to recognize Adams as well. Your point is well taken.

I agree with everything except I think Kevin King was the biggest disappointment. He was injured once again, picked on all year, only made one pick, and let us down in the biggest game of the year.

King was definitely a disappointment this year after leading the team with 5 picks a year ago. I don't think he'll be back because another team will give him more money than the Pack is willing to pay him. Thanks for the comment, 4thandinches.

I know the packers had a good season going 13 and 3 but all all i'll remember is a year where we should of won and the team shot themselves in the foot

The end of the season was painful and frustrating. We all know opportunities like that don't come along very often and it hurts to blow them. Hopefully, we're back next year. Thanks for the comment, Packerfansupreme.
