Confessions of a Polluted Mindset 2020 - Testing... Testing...

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Positive Tests: I did my best. As I mentioned in a previous Polluted Mindset, I live about 10 minutes from Bio-Reference Labs, the company handling the Covid tests for the NFL. My plot to sabotage the Bears was going as planned until that one lab tech managed to untie himself and blew the whistle on the fake positive scheme I had hatched. Hey, I tried my best.

Rodgers Watching 2010 Tape: Certainly you've heard that Rodgers has been lighting it up in practice the last few days and mentioned he saw something while watching 2010 cut-ups that he has worked on in practice - with seemingly instant results. My first reaction was, "it took 10 years for you to notice something?" He won't say what it was and the speculation is running wild. The most obvious thing would be his footwork and how he used to step into throws. But isn't that almost too obvious? Surely he knows he has been throwing more with just his arm and not his whole body for years now. So I'm thinking it has to be something else. Maybe where he holds the ball before throwing, maybe arm motion or angle, maybe the size of his drop-back steps? Whatever it is, it's kind of mind-boggling that Rodgers has only noticed it now. As listener "Kevin" on one of Aaron Nagler's youtube chats commented, "does this mean that Aaron Rodgers wasted Aaron Rodgers' prime?" That's just brilliant.

Jerry Gray: There's been a lot of talk about the influence Jerry Gray is having on the secondary unit. Seems he's a bit of an old school type, not afraid to get in players' faces with some tough love when needed. And perhaps more interesting is that the players seem to be soaking it up. The man he replaced, Jason Simmons, only lasted one year as defensive backs coach after having held various other positions with the the team. Gray is reported to be the most vocal and active assistant coach during practice and never stops teaching (and barking).

MVS: As the originator of the MVS train (I can assuredly claim that as I had the Packers drafting him in my only mock draft), I have sat by quietly as the return of ESB garnered all of the pre-camp attention among Packers fans. I mean, it seemed like Randy Moss was finally coming to the Packers, the amount of attention and love Equanimeous was gettingg. My contention has always been that MVS has the higher ceiling of the two, with ESB holding the edge in the mental aspect of the game. Some recent reports have MVS shining in practice and he has drawn cautious praise from LaFleur and Rodgers, among others. Cautious, because he needs to show consistency. Everyone knows the talent is there, but can he be consistent and put in the hard work Rodgers demands from his receivers? This year should answer that question one way or another.

Jared Veldheer:   I was convinced that the Packers would bring Veldheer back for another year as a stop-gap RT.  Instead, they signed Rick Wagner, who most likely came cheaper. It seems Veldheer would very much have liked to come back - with Rick Wagner being injured, Veldheer made this known in a somewhat subtle way:

I can envision you now, instead of black your dressed in dark green, yellow woolen cap and using a corkscrew to pick the lock. MVS's improvement would be a large boost to the offense as we could use his speed to stretch the defense. I have seen Ervins name mentioned prominently during practice sessions, he's my pick for a breakout season as the slot receiver. As of now,Wagner has not practiced since the 20th and I don't feel comfort with Turner there. Veldheer ,2 mill guaranteed with 2 more for incentives?

Positive Tests:
Good thing the NFL has people taking multiple tests to determine that it was a false positive. Its a good thing the NFL is set up well.

Rodgers Watching 2010 Tape:
The million dollar question. What did Rodgers see?
Here is the next question. What was the reason why Rodgers was looking at the tape? Was he trying to figure out something? Was this all done because they drafted Jordan Love?
Which if that is the reason and he goes out and lights up this year, will everyone view the Jordan Love pick differently if that was the reason why Rodgers turned himself around?

The one thing that it seems from camp is he has been more decisive on throwing. But sounds like he has been much more accurate. So i believe the thing he found is something fundamentally.

Jerry Gray:
I would love to see Gray be the guy who really takes our secondary to the next level. There is a lot of talent there and if they take a step, the defense could be even better. I have been hearing very good things from Josh Jackson. Is Gray the reason why he is having a good camp thus far?

MVS:
Honestly I have been on the MVS train from the beginning as well. Though that was after the draft not before. I like EQ and think he could be a terrific upgrade over what we had in Allison last year. But MVS is a guy who can take our offense to the next level. I think the combination of Adams, Lazard and MVS could be a very dangerous group. And then add in EQ and our group could be getting much better.

Jared Veldheer:
I would love to see them bring Veldheer back. IMO, they need that swing OT. I get that Wagner could be the top backup if Turner starts at RT, but to me you can't have enough insurance options at OT. Especially this year with the possibility of someone getting covid and not being able to play. Its a year they really need as many insurance policies as they can have.

Between Wagner and Veldheer, we might get close to a Bulgua if either can stay healthy. Once a OT breaks down it pretty much over on the field. 10 million looks pretty cheap now eh Gute....

Well I didn't include Turner after all. Seriously, Wagner has had two back to back seasons where his production drop was steep, now if that is because of how serious his injuries were, then you have to ask why he was playing. In that case it reflects poorly on his coaches. Veldheer can't simply whole up across the 16+ game the Packers will play this year. And he would cost almost as much as Bulgua? on a per game basis. That's why the Packers are taking a serious look at Turner at RT, they don't know if Wagner will hold up at all. I know the Packers could not afford Bulgua, there was no way he was going to give the organization a hometown discount, after the way Gute treated him in his last contract with the Packers.

Wagner has been banged up for two years. I don’t disagree with your point that that is an issue of concern but I think if he is healthy you are going too far. He isn’t that old, was decent to good before and Bulaga isn’t exactly guaranteed to start a full season either.

As to Turner, some speculate that he may be a better Tackle than guard. At this point, not too much need to panic. Neither Wagner nor Veldheer need much time. I wouldn’t pull the trigger right now.

The RT issue was never going to be resolved in a positive manor once the likes of Spriggs and other OT prospects didn't pan out. It's a no win situation.

Who wouldn't want to keep BB at RT. There is/was no better option as he is the best player available. All other options would be a downgrade at the position. Add to that he was one of ours beloved and respected players by Fans, Coaches and Teammates.

On the other side we all knew that something had to give due to financial restraints, the obvious contract demands that the market would afford him coming off a strong performance and much improved 2019 injury status.

the facts still remain that he has had a injury history and was an aging player on his 3rd? Contract.

something had to give. most likely it was the right move considering all the information available at the time. It really can't be judged until we see what BB does and even then he may or may not of suffered injuries if still with Pack. Impossible to ever say.

Marketing/Talent wise , once again, its a no win situation.

Wagner really was a good signing all things considered. He is a battle tested successful RT in the league and the division. His injury history, at a glance, is no worse than BB. Put in the mix that he was snatched up at a home town discount with very favorable, low risk terms, it seemed prudent.

To be fair it;s not a BB vs RW comparison but a BB vs who else the Packers could no longer keep and RW.

It doesn't help that RW is already hurt, its been nearly a week and who knows how it will play out. Not a good start.

32 other teams have still passed on RV so lets not " crown his ass" lol with any type of savior title. That said he is looking better and better as a RT option isn't he.

I certainly wouldn't mind a league min contract if RW isn't given a clean bill of health.

One thing we all seem to forget is that Gute has plans in place and while it's easy for us to just veer from those plans , it's not so easy or prudent to do so in the real world.

They signed Turner as a RG/RT option. Hence the seemingly overpriced contract. IMHO that option is still there and will be put in place. If it proves disastrous the question will be, how quickly and effectively adjustments will be made. I'm not cool wit Turner at RT and am pleased to see Lang as a new option for RG. Just adding my observations and theories to the conversation...Fun and interesting conversation

my take away from your post beside the RT discussion (IMHO Gutey won't let them begin hopefully with a porous right side, so perhaps the starting RT isn't on the roster now) was:

your feelings that the WR room will be just fine. I'm in agreement, in fact, no one knows who will have let's say 50-60 plus catches/500+ yds beside Adams but someone will, or perhaps 2 will. Don't forget with MLF scheming, passes will be distributed and the RBs will get their fair share. But clearly it's about match-ups AND we have the great Aaron Rodgers!

Can't believe so many feel as though a WR player picked in the first round is automatically going to start. Can we say Javon Walker?

Could Jerry Gray be the best addition to the Packers in 2020? If so, he could be that missing piece that brings this group to a top 5 defense in points allowed. If we can get the same or even more pressure from the front 7 this year and Gray gets the backfield to it’s highest level in years, watch out, here comes the Pack! The talent is there, now coach em up.

I can't read peoples minds but it , to me, seems a reach to make such a conjecture from limited information. What's the drill in place? Is AR throwing passes he would normally never throw? ARE Defenses playing in favorable or unfavorable sets in order to test players, combinations of players, schemes. What offense vs what defense?

On the one hand we have discussions on hyping players for practice performances but then we become critical of players under the same circumstances?

I would compare it to Spring training is baseball where in particular, pitchers say I'm just going to throw fastballs today or going to focus on a new pitch etc.. I give Boxers, or ask them to have something in mind to work on in sparring that day. In the middle of a game or bout is no time to try new things or work on improving things - unless it's a last option.
We are not worried about winning sparring or scrimmages, the focus is on the games/bouts

Just my take on the possible negative responses. Who knows for sure...lol

I've been writing for months, not so much doubting/criticism of the players, but reminding folks about the staff and the complacency that permeated MM in his last years as HC, particularly in his last 3/4 season. IMHO, i thought it was just fine they let him go at that point in the season; sorry, i still can't forgive him for losing the NFCCG against Seattle and AR's second chance at a ring.
More, i thought Kevin Greene was a fine OLB coach for GB yet i think Mike Smith might be even better; Go pack go.....America's real team!

I'm not seeing the practices so take this from what I'm reading...either Green Bay has great QB and Receivers combo or the DBs aren't very competitive. I'm reading a lot of completions and not enough interceptions.
It sounds like the pass rushers are getting to the QBs on a regular basis.

In the NFL, about 2/3 of passes are completed and only about 2-3% are intercepted.

Quite a few metrics show that the Packer pass defense was among the league’s best last year.

Maybe there should be more INT’s or reporting is just glorifying the pass catching. I think there is a small nugget of info we can gather this year, but I don’t take too much substance from these practice sessions, especially when few are In full pads and hitting isn’t happening much. I really like what Gray has achieved in the past and am confident he will get the most out of these players.

We won’t truly know what we have till we play the Vikings thou and maybe a couple more teams.

False positives, the bane of my life. What happened to the Bears is not unusual. (DO BETTER AL. BETTER!!!....:-) One of the first things I quickly learned on my day job, was these conrona-19 quick tests returned F/P in excess of 30%. And it was going to take time to narrow down, as more of the active duty population was tested. So, don't be surprised at the 10% figure as they go through the NFL players population the first time around. Next time, with a baseline tested players population the odds of F/P should be pretty low. What is slowly being understood is it easy to come in contact with the virus, but hard to be infected by it. Why the virus acts that way is not yet understood. And with colder weather on the way, the big question is will the virus roar back this winter (along with the flu). It all comes down to how quickly we can develop herd immunity via vaccine or natural process. Radom thoughts: Packers are going miss Brian Buluga at RT, neither Turner nor Wagner may be able to handle the position full time. Aaron Rodgers: For close to a decade people inside the organization have quietly been trying to get Rodgers to correct his mechanics. If drafting Love is what it took to wake Rodgers up, then well done Gute. Well done... As for the rest, have to wait for play on the field to get a read on this year's Packer team.

"have to wait for play on the field to get a read on this year's Packer team"; EXACTLY!

I too am a little worried about the right O line, but we have Gutey searching/working and hopefully a coaching staff that can work it.

Hah, my #1 concern is GB's porous middle defense. With an improved back end due to the insurgence of Gray's coaching perhaps GB can move it's chess pieces to improve it. Perhaps Kirksey will be more dynamic and can stay on the field and i'm not a Burks fan, he's had his chance even though he's been slowed by injuries--hopefully someone will emerge (Bolton, Ramsey, Summers, Tim Williams) to earn playing time. We don't need tackles down field, so Pettine's hybrid player (again) appears in play.

AR: never underestimate the damage a big ego can do. Outwardly, AR has handled the Love situation well. Maybe the switch to tequilla made the dif. I'm hoping he's driven now to win a SB and tell GB to trade Love or he walks. I can deal with that.

MVS: Adams had a bad year too. If he starts holding on to the ball and AR doesn't underthrow him anymore, that's a big weapon. With Funchess out, he has this one chance. (edit: just read that AR who has been reported great in practice, over threw MVS. Maybe MVS is faster than everyone else and it's just to hard for AR to switch.)

I could really use some good football this year.

IDK about Gray. The style and the barking are there, but it comes down to results. Josh Jackson is showing signs of life. Ento is up and down. He's a Maybe he can play. Hollman don't sound ready to be on the field, not even at a Tony Brown level. Love what I am reading about Stanford Samuels, but I'm still waiting for him to take a turn on Davante Adams. (We know Adams vs. Hollman is a mismatch.) King might have gotten better, but it is hard to tell from reading print. It is a tough year to evaluate Gray given the truncated nature of camp this year.

Assuming that no blemishes appear when Sullivan goes from part-time for full-time, Jaire, King, and Sullivan sounds like a decent group, with Jackson able to cover the boundary work and Sullivan and Jaire able to move to the slot if needed. It doesn't sound top 10, but not bottom 10 either. GB probably keeps 5 or 6 CBs, but there aren't that many deserving candidates. Safety should be good. Amos looks good. Nothing points to a jump by Savage, but he looks solid. Scott has talent but might need half a year or a year. Hard to tell w/o games and based on print alone. Redmond has been fairly quiet but a couple of mentions. 4 safeties make this team, 5 if you count Greene as a safety.

Keke is showing life as well. Clark, Lowry and Keke won't scare anyone, but it isn't terrible if they each stay healthy for 16 games plus playoffs. Hester has done nothing, Previllon has flashed, M. Adams is hurt and never showed much anyway. Maybe Lancaster can play the run since too much of camp is oriented to pass rush for him to display to advantage, but there are no tweets about him even as to run D.

ILB might have upgrades at both positions and even some depth, and Greene is still healthy so far. Burks with signs of life, looking smoother in coverage. The OLBs have looked good and deep. Some of them, like Tipa, have been beating the crap out of OG Conway and Zach Johnson, with Garvin showing sometimes. Ramsey as well. Need to get them better competition to see what is what.

4 more practices in August. They take the 31st off. Not sure if there are practices in Sept., but cutdowns occurs on Sept. 5.

"IDK about Gray."

I don't know that anyone will be able to change my mind on this, but I've always believed that the ordinary fan, including me, does not really have the slightest clue if position coaches are good coaches or not. If you're not on the practice field or in the meeting room, you don't know. The only exception are the very long term, super-high visibility successes of guys like Belichick etc.

Everyone thinks Gray will be a savior. I haven't heard a lot of explanation as to why. But it all sounds pretty similar to what everybody thought about Pettine before they started to wonder if maybe Pettine should be fired.

I would agree with our Guy Al on the ceiling but talent wise MVS is lacking, by what I see and read, in a couple important aspects of the game. Adjust to the flight of the ball and his hands.
The hope is he can improve on both of those issues that really reared their ugly head last year on a consistent basis. Hence the more or less benching (injuries as well could be included to be fair). One thing that EQS can not improve is speed. Speed is a valuable asset. But only if you can make the catch.

Those that have speed along with the other assets would certainly poses the higher ceiling in my opinion. heck guys are drafted on speed alone - or not drafted due to lack of it. Just the realities of the current game.

Here's hoping to both of these guys hitting their ceilings in 2020/2021!!!

The nfl is littered with Empty husks that were the 3-4 year careers of wr’s drafted for their speed despite the lack of polish or football savvy in terms of having a feel for soft spots And seams in coverages, or an understanding of how to run routes with leverage against man coverage.

I think EQ has far more pieces of the puzzle to work with than MVS. No doubt MVS has burners, but EQ seems to have a great compliment of wr skills.

Couldn't agree more. It was kinda my point. I'm just hoping MVS can buck the trend. He can supply an important niche element to the offense. I'm still of the opinion that having great hands and football IQ are the most important assets (if speed is adequate). When you have an elite QB and Scheme those assets are magnified. Coach MarCarthy required the exceptional athleticism in his recs due to his scheme of just beat the coverage. LaFluer is more of a scheme open guy. A big reason AR needs to play to the scheme. It will prolong his career and the packers success if he does..IMHO

What I don’t understand is how does Rodgers play 10 seasons without a coach noticing that something changed in Rodgers mechanics. Aren’t coaches supposed to watch film in real time and tell the player what he is doing wrong or what they need to tweak in their mechanics.
Rodgers won the MVP in 2011 and 2014 so maybe no one wanted to mess with a good thing. But really this sounds ridiculous at the professional level for both the coaching staff and the player. How many QB coaches has GB had since 2010? MM the alleged QB guru picked up nothing!!! This makes no sense to me.
I’m glad Rodgers spotted whatever he spotted and it’s great to know that he remains dedicated enough to self study and to continue to work at improving himself after 15 seasons in the league.
But the question remains, why isn’t anyone paying attention on the Packers staff.
Lombardi had 9 assistants with films that didn’t have half the angles they have today and his team was nearly perfect fundamentally and won 5 Championships. Now we have about 25 assistants including a QB coach and an OC and no one picks up on these things.
Lombardi must be shouting very loudly right now, What the hell is going on out there!!! Thanks, Since ‘61

“ What I don’t understand is how does Rodgers play 10 seasons without a coach noticing that something changed in Rodgers mechanics.”

Since’61, I think the answer is: He didn’t.

Being coached and taking coaching is two different things.

Oppy, I always appreciate your feedback. But I don’t see Rodgers not taking coaching. If he is not wanting to improve his game why would he be going back and studying 10 year old films?

I’m just pointing out that something seems inconsistent in this scenario. Thanks, Since ‘61

Guys, I thought it was the flip side of "the chip". The same drive and grit that made him who he is on the field, made him more than a bit stubborn when flaws in his game were exposed. Best QB in the league for a decade. No. 1 on this team with no real challenger until this year. And add the complete collapse of his relationship with his previous head coach, the odds were pretty high the only voice he heard was his. The Best thing for Rodgers was that MLF didn't bow at the altar of QB 1, and Gute's draft of Love brought a double kick in the butt that Rodgers needed. Unless something drastic happens, Rodgers is the starter for the next two-three years for this team.

The coaching staff bloat is astounding. I remember being somewhat shocked when I compared the team photos of the 90s teams wih prior generations. I guess I'm an old school, less is more guy.

I’m with you Tundra. All these additional coaches have done nothing to improve the level of play in the league. It’s been getting worse and worse, year by year, since the 90s. Thanks, Since ‘61

I think the main culprit in the quality of play department might be the CBAs limiting of contact, two-a-days, ability of teams to require “off season” training and mini camps, etc etc.

It may be that all the coaching specialization and additional staff Added over the years were in reaction to less and less time to get players on field with contact. An attempt to get the most from the limited practices.

Some interesting points Al.

I’ve got a hypothetical one for you.

If Rodgers has a belter of a year and says ‘trade Love, and I’ll renegotiate to a team friendly deal’ - if you’re Gute, do you take it?

No denying it, he’s going to need help if the packers are going build a complete roster to truly challenge for a super bowl. That money needs to come from somewhere.
