Schobel Won't Return to the Bills

Buffalo Bills defensive end Aaron Schobel will not return to the team, the Buffalo News reports.

"At this point I don't think I'm going to play," Schobel told The Buffalo News on Thursday. "I'm not ready to say I'm retiring but it's in the Bills' hands."

Schobel adds that he will not be attending the team's remaining "Organized Team Activity" sessions, or the mandatory mini-camp scheduled for June 23-25. Schobel has not ruled out a comeback during the 2010 season.

"But if they want to move on, I'm fine with that," Schobel said.

Schobel is due to earn a $6.025 million dollar base salary in 2010, which is a lot of money to walk away from. Schobel also has over $30 million dollars total remaining on his current contract, which runs through the 2013 season.

A second-round pick (41st overall) out of TCU in 2001, the two-time Pro Bowler (2006-07) has 483 tackles, including 78 quarterback sacks, during his nine-year career with the Bills.

With the hiring of George Edwards as defensive coordinator, the Bills are converting to a 3-4 defense, which may or may not have anything to do with the 6-4, 243-pound Schobel's decision to step away from the organization.

The 32-year old has expressed a desire in recent years to remain closer to his family in Harris County, Texas.

Expect the Bills to place Schobel on the "Reserve/Did Not Report" list, which would hold his rights during training camp. If another team suffers an injury, or is looking to improve its pass rush, and Schobel is willing to play for that team, the Bills could receive some form of compensation in return.
