Jets RB Leon Washington to Sign RFA Tender

New York Jets restricted free agent running back Leon Washington will sign his one-year tender, Washington's agent, Alvin Keels, announced earlier this morning on Twitter.

"No trade talk at all on Leon. He is a Jet and is signing his tender to remain a Jet", Keels tweeted.

A fourth-round pick (117th overall) out of Florida State in 2006, Washington led the Jets in rushing (650 yards in 8 starts) as a rookie, and overall, has gained 1,782 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on the ground after splitting carries with former teammate Thomas Jones the last three seasons.

The 5-8, 195-pound running back has emerged as a multi-dimensional threat, catching 123 passes for 969 yards and a pair of touchdowns out of the backfield, and averaging nearly 10 yards per punt return and 25.5 yards on kick returns.

Washington has returned four kicks for touchdowns during his career, and led the NFL in all-purpose yardage (2,337) in 2008, earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors. 2009 was the final year of Washington's rookie contract, and he had hoped to parlay that into a long-term contract offer from the Jets, or from one of the other 31 NFL teams, this off-season. Unfortunately, Washington suffered a broken right fibula in a Week 7 win over the Oakland Raiders, ending his season on injured reserve.

Despite being tendered at the "Second Round" level, which would pay Washington $1.759 million dollars if he does not sign a contract extension, Washington has not drawn interest on the restricted free agent market.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan had expressed disappointment that Washington was not participating in the team's off-season workout program, and it's unclear whether or not signing the tender will get Washington to participate in the voluntary program.
