What's the difference between Bryce Petty and Brett Hundley?

Two quarterbacks with diverging prospects, what really seperates Bretty Hundley from Bryce Petty?

Recently effusive praise has gone to Brett Hundley, the Packers back-up quarterback and (maybe) star in the making.  With veterans, including Aaron Rodgers, off early, Hundley was able to practice as a starter and from all accounts performed well.  On the other hand there was a quarterback drafted ahead of Hundley that was by all accounts fighting to keep his job.

Last year during the draft there wasn’t much to separate Brett Hundley and Bryce Petty; both were incredibly productive spread quarterbacks.  Both had all the physical tools needed to succeed in the NFL, but likely would require some polishing up to transition to the pro game.  Both had cannons for arms but both also could be rather scattershot.

Media outlets had both unrealistically going in the first round, but Petty ended up going in the 4th round while Hundley had to wait another round before the Packers called.   Both had pretty terrible rookie training camps, Hundley in particular looked lost and maybe overwhelmed but by the preseason, Hundley had shown enough that the Packers were willing to let back up Scott Tolzien go without an offer this offseason.  Petty never took that step.

It’s only been a year but it feels like both have already had their destinies set.  Hundley will have to bide his time under a future hall of famer, but many are convinced that Hundley will be a star when he gets his chance, albeit likely not with the Packers.  Petty on the other hand is on the roster bubble with the addition of 2nd round Christian Hackenburg, and apparently is learning how to play quarterback from Madden.

Is there really such a wide gap between Petty and Hundley?  I would argue no.  Some of this has to do with the quarterbacks themselves (Hundley seems to be more dedicated to his craft than Petty) and some of it has to do with coaching and the front office but a lot of it has to do with luck.  The Jets could have picked Hundley while leaving Petty for the Packers and perhaps their stories would have been reversed.  Maybe both would have failed or maybe both would have succeeded.

People always want to believe in human agency, that our actions have direct and tangible effects, but sometimes it’s just best to admit that we and this time the Packers just got lucky when it came to drafting Brett Hundley, just like we have to admit they got lucky 11 years ago when the Packers picked another quarterback from California falling in the draft, Aaron Rodgers.

It would be easier to handle the THIRD article in past 14 days on the same Packers back-up if I had the slightest idea what the article was trying to say. Let me see if I got it right. A) Bryce Petty doesn't look like a player, and B) The Packers "got lucky" when they very intentionally traded up, purposely wrote the name "Brett Hundley" on a draft card, and then walked that card up to the NFL commish and turned it in? Is that luck?

Hundley has solidified his place as this preseason's Jeff Janis.

I somehow think that this preseason's Jeff Janis might still be Jeff Janis. Nobody is really clamoring for Hundley to get more playing time...except for maybe Cow.

When a QB gets drafted by an Organization that has been known for hiring head coaches that change QB ' S week to week or in game often because of a bad play or the failure of others, how can a QB grow. What would it have been like had Holmgren did such with Favre, Pedersen, Burnell etc. Didn't Gruden have 4-5 QB ' S on the Buc 's one year doing such.
When teams draft Geno Smiths, under whatever guise of thinking him a franchise guy, how can any other drafted feel safe in the expected chance to succeed.
Hundley in GB gets more unwarranted praise simply by being in GB but he'll still need real game, in season play, to prove his worth.

Sure, we can attribute Hundley's rise to luck, but let's not besmirch the work of the scouting department and all the hard work they put in. The Packers traded up in the fifth round to get Hundley IIRC so he must've been pretty high on their draft board.

When TT studies a player, watches him develop and jumps up 19 spots to get him..........it's called doing your due dilligence. The Packer's staff work their butts off to find and get players like Hundley vs. Petty. Let me add, at this point neither can be called a star or bust. You have to give them a few more years and see what develops.

The Brett Hundley coronation is beyond amusing. Guy has done literally nothing in the NFL.

Common Pete... Granted what he did he did in the Preseason but he made it look easy as a rookie. Just look at the Jets QB history the last several seasons. The minute the starter has a bad game he's pulled and the next draft another is drafted. Petty, Smith, Sanchez, Hackenberg have all been drafted since Rodgers was named the starter and the ONE guy who won they won't pay.
Point is Hundley at this time seems to have potential while Petty is praying he just sticks. It's not a matter of luck. If Rodgers was injured for a few weeks 4 for example, I'd have confidence in Hundley he could go 2-2 based on McCarthy's history of getting a QB ready with a week of practice.

the luck part is where a player goes, even talented as Brett Favre was, what was the thought process in Atlanta? not much in the way of coaching, the QB's that arrive in Green Bay and a few other teams benefit from top flight coaching and development, back in the 90's and still today

The comment Petty made about being able to see defenses on Madden now was astounding. Somehow this guy was able to play for as long as he did without being able to read defenses and just "throw to the open guy". It must come down to coaching and that he had never been taught to read defenses pre snap until he got to the NFL.

Maybe instead of Wunderlich tests and personality tests they need to sit down college quarterbacks in front of a Madden game and see if they can read the blitz packages thrown at them as a way to judge them ahead of the draft.

Adding to the irony is the fact that I remember quite a few analysts who preferred Petty to Hundley because they said that Hundley couldn't read defenses. Maybe some of the analysts need to play a little Madden, too.
