Welcome Back to Green Bay, Tramon Williams!

CB Tramon Williams has signed a two-year deal to return to the Green Bay Packers.

Former Packers WR James Jones has been a news-breaking machine this offseason.

Jones, who now works for NFL Network as an analyst, broke the news on Twitter on Thursday afternoon that the Packers signed CB Tramon Williams to a two-year contract.

Williams played for the Packers from 2006-2014 before leaving and spending two years with Cleveland and a year with Arizona.

Williams may be 35 years old, but he certainly didn't play like it in 2017. Williams allowed a passer rating of just 58.4 when targeted in 2017, and was a ProFootballFocus darling all year long, finishing as the ninth-ranked CB and being named one of the site's surprise players of 2017.

Of course, how much stock you put in PFF's proprietary rankings and stats may vary, but it's clear that Williams just completed one of the better seasons of his career. While it's not likely he will be able to replicate that over his two-year deal in Green Bay, he offers an instant boost to the position and a positive veteran presence and leadership that will pay dividends for young players like Kevin King and Lenzy Pipkins, among others.

For more in-depth film study on Williams in 2017 and the potential he offers to the Packers' defense moving forward, be sure to peruse this Twitter thread by CHTV's own Andy Herman:

Williams still has tremendous instincts for the position and is certainly not afraid of contact. While this signing certainly doesn't offer a complete fix to the Packers' thin defensive backfield, it is a much-needed boost and one that gives the Packers a little more flexibility with their first pick of the draft.

If the Packers are able to pick up another veteran for the defensive backfield, like a Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and then bring in a couple rookies through the draft, then we're looking at a unit that will, at the very least, not be a significant liability in 2018.

Indeed, stoked he's back, good addition to groom the younger guys, good veteran presence. Also, really wish they would bring back Davon House, still hoping!

Then draft a few more, we have a ton of picks! Then you don't "Have To" take a CB with the 14th overall.

I would agree. Guys like Tramon and Davon should have a decent “floor”, which I think is code for “they won’t dominate but they won’t suck, either”.

Much needed veteran , maybe bring in one more experienced CB and then a draft pick and then things not looking to bad , maybe Rollins has a bounce back season which is possible he may have been playing with nagging injuries.

TW coming back is good for the Packers. My hope is that the shoulder issue, which plagued him in his final two seasons for the Pack is fully healed. Based the film of him last season it sure appears to be.

To your point about experience, it can't hurt to have the young guys in camp playing alongside a guy who made one of the sweetest plays in Packers history when he flicked that 4th down pass away to seal the deal.

welcome back, indeed. I still remember the interception of Matt Ryan just before halftime on the way to Super Bowl 45. At the very least, a goof depth signing and mentor for the youngsters. I have thought all along that this is a guy we should bring in. Now....maybe Eric Reid?

I was all for eric reid but looking at his career it appears he's far from the probowl guy he was in 2013 and may actually be very similar to what josh jones offers. He's been booted out of the traditional S role in SF and plays the hybrid linebacker role. While I'm all for spending the majority of the remaining cap space to solidify the secondary, and I have no doubt reid would be better than Jones, it does feel like an expensive redundancy.

I love how in the Tramon 2011 NFC champ pick of Matty "Choked on my ice" Ryan, that choker Qb falls on his rump and takes out his own player while trying to tackle Tramon.

Welcome back Mr. Williams.

Great signing from Gute.

This signing just makes TONS of sense. Not only do they add a savvy veteran CB to the room, but they add a savvy veteran WITH experience in both Pettines system and playing in the NFL, something the Packers current CB's lack...All 2 or 3 of them! : )

Williams was just another former Packer player who wasn't resigned, or was cut, or low-balled by Thompson for one of three reasons.

Your approaching 30, your 30 years old, OR your over 30.

Hopefully gute sets the CB position up for success with another similar signing. Thinking about how the team can put Tramon in the best situation to succeed, they need to give him the ability to rest and not feel like he has to play every down. If DRC and a high draft pick are added, then Tramon is positioned in a way that he can stay fresh and healthy throughout the year, and hopefully that'll allow a repeat of last years performance

That's a great point Cubby... I'm not so sure about DRC, I just wonder if GB is his kind of town considering he seems to loves those "bright lights" of New York. If he's down to come here on a deal that's affordable for the Packers then I'm all for it. I believe he said he wouldn't make a decision until sometime in April.

What about Jeremy Lane? I'll admit I don't know a lot about him other than he was a valuable piece of the Seattle Secondary 2 or 3 years ago as a nickel CB IIRC. Just throwing his name out there...

I'm not very knowledgeable about the nuts and bolts of the position. DRC is just an experienced name I've heard thrown around. Jeremy Lane has certainly grown up in the right system, could have some value for sure.

Well he was over 30, wanted a long term deal, and was burned by a mediocre WR in the NFCCG all signs pointed to a decline it’s not like he lit it up in Cleveland. Remember his 2017 season was a resurgence.

Yeah Bulaga and Cobb where both free agents that off season as well. TT made mistakes letting corners go, but letting Williams walk was not one of them.

Williams shoulder injury was more severe than made public. There was doubt that he would would even be able to play again. Just like Woodson, who was not resigned due to the two broken collarbones, Williams nerve injury spooked Ted. And lets be honest here Nick. The packers drafted two rookies and had two young players at CB who played very well.....and then as usual with this team, the God of injury struck this secondary group hard, and kept on hitting. Like Woodson, Williams recovered and has played well for other teams. Ted had good reason to let both of them go. I thought he was wrong on both players at the time, but I understood why. Glad to have Williams back, even at his age, still an above average NFL DB. And in this league, that's saying something.

The best use of free agency is to make it so you are free to follow the board in the draft instead of having such gaping holes that you have to chase need. This is a step in the right direction. So far Gute is doing a good job of it. He added a backup QB, TE, pass rush help and a CB, which were the most gaping holes on the roster, IMO.

I'd like to see another CB signed. Given the available names, I wouldn't necessarily feel great about the CB group but at least it would make the hole at CB a bit less gaping. And maybe a veteran OL.

Definitely. Of the 12 picks, I'm expecting (hoping?) at least 3 to be DBs.

Plugging in some vets now means Gute can let the strength he's cited in the DB group work for him a little bit. Instead of being forced to draft one in the first, they can wait a round or two if they see better value at another position. I don't think they are quite there yet. But they are a lot closer than they were.

Very happy about this. Was huge in the superbowl run and if Terrence Newman has shown us anything it's that DBs who look after their bodies and are savvy veterans can still impact games into their late 30s. We're entering a new era of sports science and teams should start to worry less about age, especially where there's no injury concerns.

If we could bring in House before camp and no doubt draft 2-3 DBs that will leave us with something decent to work with and a lot of bodies

Tramon, House, King, Rollins, Pipkins, Brown, Waters, Hawkins - hopefully a couple of these younger guys step up and 'make the leap'.

Mathews is really good in the slot. In all honesty, if we line up with Adams and Graham on the outside with Mathews and Cobb in the slot, and add Jones or Montgomery to the backfield, that's going to be tough for defenses to stop.

I think we have some real versatile weapons and Matthews would only add to that arsenal. Jones, Cobb, Monty and Graham are all valuable chess pieces. I love the idea of a formation with Adams, Matthews & Graham wide with Cobb & Jones in the backfield. Do think we could still really do with a wideout with searing straight line speed but with Tramon and Matthews suddenly there feels like less holes in the roster.

Completely agree!

Having Cobb, Montgomery, Graham, Jones are tremendous chess pieces. They are very versatile and can create so many mismatches. Throw in Kendricks and if they would sign Mathews that's even more chess pieces to throw at defenses. Its going to be hard to know what kind of defense to be in because they could run or throw it on any down, out of many different looks

Another lineup that I"m very intrigued with. Adams, Graham outside. Cobb in the slot with Montgomery and Jones in the backfield.

My hope is by bringing in Philbin he will bring more creativity to the offense.

Add to that Graham, and Kendricks to a lesser extent.

McCarthy knows how to use TE's like Graham. Kendricks is a guy to watch this year IMO. He never really got to play with Rodgers, and with Bennett in front of him. While he may not have a ton of action he is a guy that could make some big plays this year.

Kendricks and the 2 second year running backs on the offense and Rollins and Jones on the defense are the players that I'm really interested to see this year.

I'm expecting the running backs to be even more prominent, but will be pleasantly surprised if one or more of the others click.

Kendricks didn't impress me as much as I'd hoped last year (drops etc), but it will be good to see him with an optimal quarterback and some time in the system

I'm really curious to see how they plan to use Josh Jones. ILB or S or hybrid?

Depending on how they plan to use Jones that could decide what they do with the first pick of the draft. For example if Roquan Smith and Derwin James are both there, they may decide to draft one over the other based on having Josh Jones playing one of those positions.

Rollings I'm also curious to see what they do with. Perhaps they are going to move him to safety now, especially after coming back from his Achilles injury. But maybe he comes back fine and Pettine finds a better role for him. Much like Hayward, perhaps a new system will help Rollins like it did with Hayward.

Kendrick's I think could surprise. He didn't have a good year, but another year in the system, out of Bennett's shadow and the return of Rodgers, and new coordinators could mean he has a much bigger role in the offense.

The 2 rookie RB's I really can't wait to see with a full offseason and year in the system. Especially with Rodgers back.

Sign Matthews and draft a speedster. Not sure if Davis is the answer at wideout. Maybe he comes around this year. He is fast and shifty on punt returns. Just needs to make better decisions before the ball gets to him which will come with more experience. Once he catches it he’s exciting.

On Matthews... I have no idea what kind of money he wants, lets call it $6M. Is that money better spent improving a recieving corp that already features adams, cobb and graham? Or improving a secondary currently featuring king/TW/dix/jones.

To me, the defense is where the team gets meaningfully better per $ spent, which is why Id prefer they fill that wr spot with a rookie and the current wrs on the roster

GB has at least $11M to maybe as much as $13M to actually spend on first-year cap hits. Might be able to sign both Gaines/Breeland and Matthews (at $6M AAV or so), but it would be tight. Oops, need to deduct whatever we just spent on Twill from those numbers. Yeah, might have to make some moves. Perhaps re-do Crosby, or look at Kendricks and/or Jake Ryan as bubble guys. There aren't that many places to get cap space, short of CM3/Cobb/Bulaga, or Daniels/Bakh.

Agreed, but my numbers are at $9-10 million left with twill at an estimated $4.7 million. Are you taking into consideration the Top 51 cap hit of draft pick signees, TGR? I have that the the draft signees will account for roughly $3.3 million, which in this case, would put your numbers and mine in alignment. Just curious.

I think your numbers sound about right. I used OTC, not my own numbers. OTC's estimates have been about $3M higher than mine for some time now. $3.3M for draft picks is about right, might even be a wee bit high now that our 51st contract is at $555K. $19.1M - $3.3M = $15.8M, and if Twill comes in at - $4.7M = $11.1M using OTC. I fear Sportrac is closer to being correct at $17M than OTC is at $19.1M, so somewhere between $9.1M and $11.1M. I am $1M less than those numbers, so I'd be at $8.1M.

If he does something like Sitton did, that might do it.

If the FO or Pettine likes Tre Boston better and given the slow FA market for safeties (Burnett's cap hit is $2,4M), can they get him for the same or less as HHCD is set to get?

I have no idea why HHCD regressed so badly. I always thought he would likely be good but never All-Pro. I sometimes mention him as a surprise cut, but that is more because there really aren't many players with decent-sized cap savings: the familiar Nelson/Cobb/CM3, Bulaga, then Dix and some fairly small savings opportunities, like Jake Ryan ($1.9M) and Kendricks ($1.6M). The only other players IIRC who could provide cap space are Daniels, Perry and some from Crosby, but the last three all would be the proverbial converting salary to signing bonus rather than cutting them.

I'd prefer to give Dix another year. We can re-sign him or he might be a comp pick if he leaves. Dix, CM3, Cobb, Wilkerson, Monty, Kendricks and Ryan will all be FAs in 2019. Comp picks are nice, but we don't get them until 2020, and some/most of them won't do a lot until 2021.

We've got some other posters and authors who know Xs and Os real well. If we picked James, how does he fit with Dix and Josh Jones? No idea what Pettine wants to do. It is hard for me to picture our starters as Jones and James, with Brice/Whitehead/Evans being the primary back-ups.

Good questions TGR. Hard to answer at this point. How Pettine adapts his scheme to the personal on defense is question 1. I think we will get a partial answer with the up coming draft. With the secondary wiped out(no, I am not overstating this) by the end of last season. Pettine will have a free hand in putting the kind of player he wants on the field. As I said before, I think every player with the exceptions of King and Jones and the resigned Williams is expendable. Until we see it on the field, we won't know what kind of player Pettine values in the secondary. (Went back and watched the video on Clinton-Dix. What a nightmare of season for him. Brice was totally clueless out there, and Kings shoulder meant he had to cheat up on Kings bad side in coverage. Too put it bluntly, he was caught in no man's land more often than not. No wonder he got frustrated as the season went. It was only when Burnett was at his SS position that Dix could play his normal coverage. Last year was a total mess for the young man.)

I think this was the right move for a few reasons.

First they are bringing someone they know. Someone that has experience in GB and in Pettine's system.

Second they are bringing in a veteran who is coming off one of his best years as a pro. He still has gas left in the tank.

Third he will provide stability until whoever they draft is ready to take over. Whether that be this year or next year, it will allow the rookie time to develop and not be forced to play before he is ready.

Fourth he will provide really good leadership for the young CB's. Guys like King, Rollins, Pipkins, Brown, Hawkins and whoever they draft will be able to learn from him.

All in all I think its a great move and it will really help the Packers.

Pettine says he likes to pair up players who know what is up with guys who are still learning. Tramon played for Pettine before, so I think Tramon is going to be able to help more than one spot.

Definitely!

I think Pettine is going to bring a lot to the new defense. But now having 2 of his former players on the roster I think will really help!

Like you said with his pairing of players to work together should really help the communication part. The quicker the players know what they are doing off the field the better they will be on the field. Pairing players up to learn together will help ensure that more players are on the same page faster!

Williams should not only provide a veteran mentor role for guys like King and the new rookie that they draft (assuming they draft one), but will also help a guy like Clinton-Dix and Jones.

I know this is an unpopular idea, but Revis and Tramon would be coaches on the playing field. I think Revis could play safety in certain defenses such as nickle and dime packages. I know- I’m not thinking with a level head. Never am. Only if he was on “ the cheap”. Just an idea that popped in my head.

I like it. He could be a decent fill in and provides some depth. Get a guy that can start in the slot, a vet then you can bring in another rookie or two.

We will have a lot of young CB's playing in all pre season games. MM couldn't care less about winning these games only to evaluate talent, it's practice. WB TW it's like having another coach on the field for the young guys. It will still be CB or edge rusher at pick 14 IMO. It looked like we might be waiting a while to make any more moves, but it looks like Pettine is putting his stamp on this defense .

I'm thinking that Pettine has a different outlook on winning preseason games. For all the right reasons I see them playing with passion under him from the start and establishing an identity.

I only see 5 or maybe 6 guys on this defensive crew who aren't going to have to flat-out win their jobs in camp this summer. That's a good thing.

I was talking about starters...sorry, I can see how my comment wasn't all that specific (or could be construed in this way).

I like the TW signing but we also have to temper our enthusiasm a bit and see what's left on the treads before we get overly excited. On Mathews, if he is over his injury woes from last year then he would be a huge addition. Seems like he had a pretty bad series of injuries last year and ended up on IR?

It will always depend on the physical (if/when he takes one). Supposedly he had surgery in December to correct a nagging issue.

Jordan M had a sternum injury, then needed surgery on his thumb (missed just one game though) and then went on IR due to a knee injury, according to this link (some nice film review too but all slot and 5 yard outs shown):

Good signing. I like having TW back. His veteran presence should be very helpful to a young and developing secondary. He knows Pettine’s defense which is an added benefit. Our CB group has become a little more solid as of today. Thanks, Since ‘61

I'm relieved that with this signing and the interest in Matthews that there are signs of life at 1265. It's been dead there since the Fuller offer sheet.

I had speculated (as did many here) that TW and/or House might be added just for some veteran knowledge and ability to be 'mentors' to whom ever the Packers' younger players end up being. I like this move mightily. I wouldn't be too surprised if House doesn't end up being a possible late pickup (maybe even after the draft). He LOVES to play in GB and by all accounts was a great example to the younger players and spent extra time trying to coach them up (even if Caper's system made that difficult). Gute seems to be working well with Pettine so far!

Honestly, I would like to see House come back again. He was hurt most of last year, but when he was healthy he played well.

I'd rather have more options then less at CB, and I don't want to have to rely on the likes of Rollins, Pipkins and other UDFA's to make an impact. Though if they emerge then that could really impact the defense.

I'd like House better if he had the versatility to play slot CB. Need two boundary CBs, and a third to back them up. Just saying if Twill or House could play slot and slide out to the boundary if someone misses a game to three that would be ideal.

Yeah, I agree. I do think they need to find more slot CB's now. I do think King might be able to play in the slot some, especially against bigger WR's.

To be honest though, would it really be a bad thing if House was our 4/5th CB?

A fair point. Like Julius Peppers he can't possibly be an every down player at his age.

That's not knocking his ability or guts, but if the Packers want to be relevant at the business end of the season and value his contribution on the field (as opposed to the locker room and training field) he'll need to be well managed so that he's around then.

The flipside of this is that the Packers play him hard early and expect one of the young secondary or to-be-drafted players gradually replace him for the run home.

He played essentially a full season at CB last year and played well. We all suspect he's gonna hit the wall soon, but some guys last a while. For the role we all envision him having, I think he's a relatively safe signing.

sure thing Dobber. In my humble and unprofessional opinion I'm happy that the Packers signed him back. His experience, capabilities, toughness and locker room presence are an asset to mold that young group around, and how he's used will be interesting to watch. Unfortunately he is in that position group where losing even a step or 2 of pace or reaction in a couple of plays can be pivotal to a game.

For those of you that remember, Ron Wolf drafted three CBs in the first three rounds in 1999. It was the third pick, Mike McKenzie from Memphis that ended up being the cream of the crop, while the others pretty much washed out.
As A-Rod would say, R-e-l-a-x. The draft is deep this year on DBs. We don't need to sign anyone yet, especially someone who's only 5'9" or 5'10".
