Visits Scheduled: Finley to Seattle, EDS to Tampa Bay

They haven't signed deals yet, but the Packers tight end and center are looking to see what the market bears.

With the start of free agency officially open as of 3:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, there is yet to be news of any Packers signing contracts either with Green Bay or elsewhere, but a pair of players have reportedly scheduled visits.

From Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com:

And from Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

As suggested here at Cheesehead TV Tuesday morning, it doesn't much matter whether Finley's neurosurgeon clears him or not. Any team interested in signing the tight end will want to put him through their own physical, which is apparently what the Seahawks will want to do.

If they feel comfortable in signing Finley and the Packers do not, the Packers will be losing one of the best receiving tight ends in franchise history. Fellow tight end Andrew Quarless is also a free agent, and the Packers could practically be starting from scratch at the position if he leaves too.

As for Dietrich-Smith, it was thought on Monday that the Giants may be the front-runners for the center's services, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Should the Packers lose Dietrich-Smith, they'd be beginning the 2014 season with their fourth starting center in four years, leaving them with little stability at the position.

The in-house options at center include J.C. Tretter, Garth Gerhart and perhaps even T.J. Lang, although each brings their own sets of risks.

Blind optimism and blind pessimism - what's the difference?

I think it is unlikley MD Jennings has so much as a contract in GB, much less a starting job.

Micah Hyde is the nominal starter on March 12, 2014. If they find someone better in FA or the draft, that's wonderful. But Hyde is already major upgrade over Jennings and he's yet to take a snap at the position.

When Hyde missing on a play will result in the injury of the best player in football, I'll be as concerned about starting him.

I'm not saying Tretter can't play, just saying that I haven't seen the proof that he's capable of being a starter at one of the more important positions on the offense.

When did I ever say I was not ok with Tretter playing OC?

I did say (several times) I didn't think Tretter was the top option to replace EDS. That's a far cry from what you read into what I said.

"Ted isnt gonna overpay a free agent ever" ? He just payed Sam Shields the most money per year of any NFL player on the market!! even though he was rated no higher than 17th best FA in any publication thats out there including tom silversteins interviews with several nfl execs. THATS CALLED OVER FKN PAYING!!! but apparently he's still frugal if he only over pays his own!!!! delmas 3mil yr malcom jenkins 5mil yr D'Quell jackson 5mil yr arthur jones 6mil yr lamar houston 7mil yr all of which would have filled major needs for pack at a fair price!! but instead we over pay shields which in turn must make jordy nelson say.....if he's gettin 10mil yr than i'm gettin 10 mil yr and randall cobb says im gettin 12mil yr and basiclly will make us a team that cherry picks 6 or 7 guys and than has to fill in the cracks with the md jennings of the world!!!!!!!!

If you look at Shields contract, you could easily say it's a 2 year deal at 8.25 million per year.....depending on how you want to look at it. Packers won't be left with a bunch of dead money if things go south.

In two years (2015 season), if all goes as planned, the Packers should win SB. What more can you ask for?

Barry,

Your information is already out of date. Aqib Talib was given absolutely crazy money by Denver. So Shields has not gotten the highest avg/year of anyone this FA season. Nor has he gotten the most absolute dollars nor the highest guarantee.

Last I checked, CB was a marquee position that demands bigger contract that ILB and/or Safety. Comparing players across those positions is foolish.

Absolutely correct. It's silly to compare free agents across all positions..

Two natural phenomenons are occurring at the same time. Players (from every team including GB) are looking to cash in with the biggest contract. There is no fault in any player trying to find a team that will play them the most money. Packer players are no different than any other. Sure, it’d be nice if their allegiance was stronger than the $$$ being (potentially) offered to them. Secondly, every Packer player knows TT’s MO. He’s slow and methodical in finding the right person and the right price. More often than not, he doesn’t pull the trigger. Aside from Reggie White and Charles Woodson, the Packers rarely go after the high profile FA’s. Packer fans, we’ll be fine. I’m comfortable waiting and watching teams (Raiders, Browns, and others) spend all their cap money. Ted will find the right players, either in FA or in the draft. GO Pack GO!!!

Finley to Seatlle? Fine, he wasn't coming back anyway.

EDS? We need EDS... Sorry, but we need him. We cannot go back to "musical OL".
