One Benchmark Down: QB Aaron Rodgers Practices Saturday

The first of a few more obstacles for Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers en route to his recovery and return to football was conquered Saturday morning -- on his 34th birthday, no less.

According to NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport, Rodgers practiced with the team on Saturday, officially designating him as a player to return from injured reserve.

The Packers used their first of two return designations on offensive tackle Jason Spriggs a couple of weeks ago and are expected to use their second on Rodgers, given whether or not the bone in his clavicle is healed enough and the team clears him.

Rapoport added, "Many factors will go into him actually playing — including the scan, the team's standing. Today, he practiced a little and obviously not with the first-team. It merely means he hasn't had any setbacks. He's on schedule."

Rodgers said at the beginning of November in his first locker room interview almost three weeks after the injury that the bone must be on-track for a return to even be in the cards.

"It's going to come down to the bone healing," he said. "That's the most important thing. ... If it heals and we're in the right position, then there's a conversation. If the bone isn't healed, there's absolutely no conversation to be had."

According to former NFL team doctor, David Chao, MD, Rodgers' collarbone won't be 100 percent until six-months after surgery, which took place on Oct. 19 -- just a day before the Packers placed him on IR. However, with the 13 screws and two plates inserted to help stabilize the bone and quicken the healing process, Rodgers will be able to return at his target date: Dec. 17 against the Carolina Panthers.

That is if the Packers are still in playoff contention.

Quarterback Brett Hundley has the reins for the next two weeks -- much like he has for the last five -- and must do his part in helping ensure a win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday and the Cleveland Browns next week. If Rodgers returns and the Packers manage to win their final three games -- against Carolina, Minnesota and Detroit -- then a 10-6 record has a roughly 90 percent chance of getting them into the playoffs.

Rodgers will have a scan done on the clavicle after the game against the Browns to determine where it is healing-wise and whether or not he'll be able to suit up the following Sunday in Carolina. He must be on IR for at least eight weeks.

Glad he’s healing well and hopefully no long-term issues moving forward, I would be shocked to see 12 back on the field this season.

Alshon Jeffery joined the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year deal this offseason with hopes of proving himself worthy of a long-term pact. On Saturday, Jeffery got his wish.

The Eagles rewarded their star wide receiver with a four-year extension through the 2021 season. The deal is worth $52 million and could be worth up to $56 million, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source. The contract includes $27 million in guaranteed money.

Sounds like a Jay Cutler contract to me. SMH. He’s not even that good, is often injured, and drops passes in critical situations. Yeah, 52 million sounds fair. Lol

I concur, Dr. Holmes. He probably is better than Adams and will be at least a ceiling on what Adams might request. $27M guaranteed doesn't mean $27M guaranteed at signing.

I wonder where Philly got the cap space? Ertz had to convert $3.2M of base salary to a bonus to clear up $2.5M in cap space just last March. They had very little salary cap space for 2018, just $415K, but perhaps they have some deadwood contracts they can dump next year. Philly has locked up a bunch of their players and don't have any significant UFAs in 2018.

I understand the frustration, Adams needs to be locked up, but it takes two to tango.

Because Devonte isn't a number 1 receiver and Burnett is HIGHLY overrated, and most likely won't even be back.
He can't even play two games in a row without getting hurt.
Gone.

I don't want to see Arod come back UNLESS GB is sitting at 7-6 and DET, SEA, ATL and CAR lose their next 2.

"Reins" for reindeer. Duh. I'm just trying to get in the holiday spirit.

Why would GB officially designate AR for return? They don't have to decide yet, do they? And they could wait for the next x-ray to see how the actual healing is going.

Sounds weird to me. If AR can't go or we lose, I wouldn't mind seeing Murphy or even Herb Waters designated to return.

Edit: Okay, if they want AR to practice on Saturday, he has to be designated to return. AR didn't work with the ones or the scout team, so it doesn't look like this was anything other than a morale booster for the rest of the team.

Hmmm, how many of you wants to throw this season away with dirty water already...

I'm glad that Aaron is on his recovery schedule. I would let him and Packers medical staff to make decision on his return...
