The Ultimate Green Bay Packers All-Time 53-Man Dream Roster

Let's talk about the greatest players in Packers history

The Green Bay Packers have a large and beautiful 103-year history. They won 13 NFL championships, are home for multiple eternal football stars and are the most iconic franchise in the league. Therefore, you can imagine it's not an easy task to find the best players ever in the team's history. But that's what we will do here.

The challenge is to put together the best possible 53-man roster with what players did or have done in Green Bay. Disclaimer: Julius Peppers, for example, is a great talent, but the peak of his career was played outside Green Bay, so he didn't make the team.

Feel free to comment, criticize and suggest different approaches.

Quarterbacks
15. Bart Starr
4. Brett Favre
12. Aaron Rodgers
This position was an easy one. The problem will be for the coach to decide who will start.

Running backs
5. Paul Hornung
30. Ahman Green
31. Jim Taylor
33. Aaron Jones
It wasn't easy to let Ryan Grant out, but Aaron Jones has been individually more productive and efficient. Johnny Blood deserves a honorable mention, too.

Wide receivers
14. Don Hutson
84. Sterling Sharpe
80. James Lofton
80. Donald Driver
87. Jordy Nelson
85. Greg Jennings
17. Davante Adams
I had a hard time deciding between Nelson, Jennings, and Adams. So I found a way to keep them all.

Tight ends
82. Paul Coffman
89. Mark Chmura
88. Jermichael Finley
88. Bubba Franks
Franks wasn't part of the team, until I finalized it and needed two more players. So he was in.

Offensive linemen
69. David Bakhtiari
75. Forrest Gregg
64. Jerry Kramer
63. Fuzzy Thurston
51. Jim Ringo
71. Josh Sitton
76. Chad Clifton
65. Mark Tauscher
52. Frank Winters
Offensive line is difficult because there are no stats for older players. So accomplishments were the standard.

Interior DL
74. Henry Jordan
93. Gilbert Brown
90. B.J. Raji
Santana Dotson could have made it too, but his only individual award was achieved as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Edge defenders
92. Reggie White
87. Willie Davis
74. Aaron Kampman
52. Clay Matthews
94. Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila
There were so many great options here, because I put together the 4-3 defensive ends and the 3-4 outside linebackers.

Linebackers
66. Ray Nitschke
89. Dave Robinson
59. John Anderson
56. Nick Barnett
50. AJ Hawk
It was challenging to decide between Barnett and Hawk, because their careers are relatively similar. I chose Barnett initially, but with a roster spot remaining, Hawk made it as well.

Cornerbacks
21. Charles Woodson
26. Herb Adderley
28. Willie Buchanon
31. Al Harris
23. Jaire Alexander
38. Tramon Williams
Woodson and Adderley would be an absurd duo. Jaire Alexander has already made it, which shows us how potential he has to be a Packers Hall of Famer.

Safeties
24. Willie Wood
36. LeRoy Butler
36. Nick Collins
42. Darren Sharper
It's so sad that Nick Collins' career ended abruptly because of an injury.

Specialists
2. Mason Crosby
17. Craig Hentrich
61. Brett Goode
It wasn't easy to find a great punter. So I went with Hentrich, who was a member of those amazing 1996/1997 teams. He ended up having his best individual years in Tennessee later in his career.

How about Ezra Johnson, Tim Harris, or Ted Hendricks. Ted didn't play long for Green Bay, but wow! Mark Lee vs Tramon?

This a great job! Well Done! I agree with your selections. The only Change/addition or honorable mention that I would make is OG Gale Gillingham to possibly replace Fuzzy Thurston. Fuzzy was a great Packer but I think that Gillingham was a more talented player. He was also bigger and faster than Fuzzy.

On the RB group I think we would need to include John Brockington. During his time with the Packers he was a force to be reckoned with.

Among the receivers Boyd Dowler deserves at least an honorable mention. He had great hands and made many great plays for the Packers over the years.
I realize that Boyd played in an era where the game was dominated by the running game and that was particularly true for the Lombardi Packers. Dowler was fast for his era but his height and great hands made him a reliable and favorite target for Starr on those great championship teams of the 60s.

Bottom line is that this all time team just shows how fortunate we have been to be Packers fans over the last 6+ decades. Hopefully this new era of Packer football will add more names to this already impressive roster. Thanks, Since '61

Every all-time team needs a fullback, so we need to find a way to make room for Clarke Hinkle and William Henderson.

Hinkle did it all: FB, LB, P, K (but apparently not too accurate), and KR; these two and three-way players really earned their money, didn't they?

Henderson was a player most of us saw in action, a very solid pro. He was competent, durable, and is a team HOFer; and made first team All-Pro in 2004. Also good for many important receiving first downs throughout his career.

Great article Wendell!

I agree with the other contributors on Gale Gillingham. He is possibly the most talented lineman in team history and should be in the HOF. (However, he won't make it. Too many Packers from that era in the Hall). Also, I don't think you can leave Ron Kramer off of the TE list. He defined the position in the early sixties and was an absolute beast.

Should do an all time favorite player 53 man roster. They don't even need to be all time great. An example would be at safety, Chuck Cecil. He's not an all time great, but he sure was all time favorite.

CrazyPF I've got to disagree on Cecil. The blood running down his nose was a cool visual for fans but I wasn't a fan because he always made the hit on the receiver AFTER they'd caught the ball and were moving the chains for the Packers' opponent. Just my "fan take". :)

Bubba was a pretty good player for us. He's kind of my ideal TE: Quiet guy, always shows up for work, gets his guy blocked, team player, catches two or three passes. Oh, and he was a 3x All Pro. Not Pro Bowl, All-Pro.

Finley....my nickname for him was Jeralmost Finley, because he almost made some incredible catches. In reality, he had 3 good seasons with us, and missed big parts of others with injury. In his good seasons, he caught like 55+ passes and wasn't a very good blocker.

I'll take Bubba. And Coffman, of course, and Chmura.

I liked Bubba (especially that R to R "Hail Mary" pass at the Lions' den, but he never had any YAC on those "behind the line of scrimmage" passes that a certain QB liked to throw. I've never seen such a big player go down so easy when touched by much smaller opponents.

And I don't know how Reggie white, or any other name

I always love the 'today's athletes are better' statement. It is a true statement, but the NFL is a league of comparable teams. Each decade the league moves forward, but it doesn't invalidate the contributions made in the past.

Here's something to consider in your ceaseless adoration of Aaron Rodgers:

Super Bowl wins: Bart Starr 2. MVP Super Bowl twice. Same game as today.

Brett Favre: 1 win and another appearance.

Aaron Rodgers 1 win.

And the 17- 0 Dolphins. w/ Bob Griese is proof.
Dan Morino and Fran Tarkenton - Zero
I see more people wear Morino shirts,
more than any other Dolphin.
Can't live in the past. Things change.
But Rodgers talent was wasted.
And maybe this is where the packers have lost it.
To Avoid the dolphins mistakes.
Don't keep replacing coaches.
Look how many QBs/coaches they had since Marino.
Lombardi Resigned -

About GM and coaching priorities.
But if we follow Gute's drafts and Trades.
We're at the cross roads again.
Because Murphy has taken control.
And too many of Gutey's picks have failed

Lots of good players there and I saw all the guys who played after 1960. Wasn't Tony Canadeo a pretty good player for us at RB? He did make the HOF and we retired his number. You'd think he'd make the squad.

I particularly liked that AJ Hawk was included. This is a guy who never missed practice or games, was on some real good teams, including the Super Bowl winners of 2010. His deal was reworked for the benefit of the team a couple of times. He's our all-time leading tackler. And so many people on Packer fan boards trashed this guy, because in their subjective opinion, "he's just not that good". And yet here he is, on our all-time 53 man squad.

After Nitschke, we had kind of a shaky situation at ILB for a while. About two decades or so. When Wolf showed up, we went with guys like Holland, Noble, and Koonce, who were all upgrades. Bernardo Harris showed up and started for 5 years , during which time he got about 5 splash plays and 5 sacks. He was released following Favre's playoff meltdown against the Rams, part of Mike Sherman's plan to "make our defense faster", which is apparently the lesson Sherman took away from this, and that's why it happened again in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

After Bernardo, we had Hardly Worthanickelson for a year, and then we took Barnett. Hawk was actually drafted as an OLB, and transitioned to ILB when we switched to 3-4 in 2009.

Nice work, Wendell. That was a fun read.

I'm with 57 on the addition of Clarke Hinkle; the guy laid out Nagurski! Another back we can't forget is Tony Canadeo (he played D and special teams, too, for 11 seasons) - second Packer to have his number retired.

TEs, I'd give a nod to Marv Fleming because he is/was Marv Fleming. His seven seasons in Green Bay eclipse Finley's imho.

Darren Sharper? There aren't any rapists on my "all-time-53-man-dream-roster." Bobby Dillon is a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and not a rapist. Lombardi referred to him as the best defensive back in all of football when he came to coach Green Bay. He takes Sharper's spot.

Leotis I have no problem switching out Sharper for Dillon. However, I would just point out that Dillon only played 3 seasons in Green Bay.

Another safety who I would switch out for sharper is Johnny Gray who joined the Packers in 1975 and played nine seasons for the Packers and made it into the Packers HOF. As far as I know he remained in Wisconsin since his retirement from the NFL..

I would prefer Gray represent the Packers on their all-time team rather than Sharper for the reasons you correctly mentioned in your post. Thanks, Since '61

There was a Dillon who only played for the Packers from 52-59 and there was Bobby Dillon who came over from the NY Giants in 1959. The Dillon who came over from the NY Giants is in the NFL HOF. That is the player that I believe Leotis was referring to in hi s original post. It is also the Dillon who I remember playing for the Packers. You can look him up.

I was not following the Packers in 59 when the Dillon you refer to was still playing in Green Bay. Thanks, Since '61

If I was a head coach, it would be no problem to deal with the QB room:
- regular season starter - Aaron Rodgers,
- playoff starter - Bart Starr,
- Brett Favre, gunslinger takes over when things aren't going the planned way during the game.

Assuming this kind of shuffling is good for the players which obviously couldn't work. But this whole thing is for fun and so is my idea. There is no other franchise to have a trio half that good.

Since no one on this board saw the Packers in the 20's, 30's and 40's it is hard to find players from those decades in the 'greatest' teams.

I realize the names are placed by jersey number but as a 6- decades fan, I was taken aback by that order.

I nearly gagged when I saw David B. name ahead of Forrest Gregg. Some guy(snicker) named Vince Lombardi said Gregg was the greatest player he'd ever seen. I know it's listed by number, but Gregg not being ahead of David B. is tough to see.

Not listed in the tight ends was Marv Fleming. Jermichael Finley was a good tight end, but Marv Fleming was better. He could block AND catch passes. Check out another 60's tight end named Ron Kramer. He might surprise you.

Donald Driver should always be second to Don Hutson, but Driver deserves all the accolades.

I would have preferred to have the players ranked not by jersey number but by ability and performance.

Harry Lombardi's comment about is: "Forrest Gregg is quite simply the finest football player that I have ever coached." During Gregg's career in Green Bay ('56-'70) he was flagged for one penalty. He played in 187 consecutive games. The team record until Favre.

Today we often discuss versatile players. In his era Gregg played LT, RT and Guard for the Packers. Through all the changes he was flagged for only one penalty.
He was a 7 time All-Pro for the Packers. He was named to the NFL's First 50 years All-time starting team.

IMO he remains the standard by which all other OLs are measured. Thanks, Since '61

Starrbrite, thanks for the mention of Ron Kramer, with whom I was unfamiliar -- but your comparison to Mike Ditka caught my attention.
From his bio at Wiki, he was really impressive for the Packers; from 1961-64, he had more than 500 yards receiving each season as a tight end.
Interesting that he was another guy Lombardi turned around from ineffective to excellent.

To me, it's a tough call between Freeman and Jennings, as I'm a big fan of both.
I'll add for context that Jennings was fantastic in the Super Bowl victory after the 2010 season, worthy of at least co-MVP.

Talk about all time top talent, no wonder the Packers have the most NFL Championships ever (and the only team to win 3 in a row twice which few ever mention). I would have added Billy Howton, if you look at his numbers even though on poor teams he deserves a spot, few realize that when he retired he had the most NFL receptions ever (Raymond Berry broke that record later). In addition Bobby Dillon from that same era deserves a spot, he finally got to the Hall Of Fame after a long wait. But the biggest omission was Gayle Gillingham, note the following from the Packers first Historian;

Former Packers public relations director Lee Remmel wrote in a 1976 game program that some team insiders considered Gillingham to be "the finest guard ever to play the game." Bob Schnelker, who spent 27 years in the NFL as an assistant coach, was among them. "Gale was the best guard I've ever been around," he said. Bart Starr agreed. "He'll go down as one of the great guards in history," Starr said in 1975. Almost 30 years later, Starr hadn't changed his mind. "When you combine (Gillingham's) size and athleticism, he was unique," Starr said in 2003.

Excellent—-
I read that Alan Page was intimidated by one player—Gillingham.
I too believe he was one the best guards ever—and, the best all-time Packer’s O-lineman.

Watching practice where they had one defender, one offensive lineman and one running back in a short area which they called the "Nutcracker Drill" I would see defensive lineman shuffle positions in line in order not to go against Gilly, talk about respect.

Got to include Gale Gillingham, John Brockington and Fred Carr. Tough choices all the way around. Great article.

Kenny Clark should most definitely be on the dt list. I also think Micah Hyde should be a honorable mention at safety. He wasn't better than any of the other guys, but he was definitely a really good player.

Marco Rivera and Mike wahle should be on here. That early 2000s offensive line was incredible

Mike Wahle is an excellent choice—
Kramer and Gillingham have to be first.
