The Price for the Packers to Sign Jordan Love to an Extension Will Only Go Up

When it comes to NFL quarterback contracts, timing is everything. And right now, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love has excellent timing as he seeks to sign an extension with the team. Since it has now been more than a year since Love signed his two-year deal with the team, the Packers can sign him to a long-term deal that will keep him in Green and Gold for the foreseeable future. But what will it cost to make Love the franchise’s next long-term starter and franchise quarterback?

Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions signed Jared Goff to a long-term extension. The deal was reportedly worth $212 million over four years with $170 million guaranteed. That gives the Lions starting QB an average salary of $53 million per season over the life of his new contract.

Goff has more experience than Love and has an impressive resume. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler and has a career quarterback rating of 93.6. He has led his teams to the playoffs four times including helping the Rams reach the Super Bowl after the 2018 season.

Goff is in the prime of his career. He’s been in the league eight seasons and will turn 30 later this year.

Goff is not at the top of the market, although he’s in the ballpark. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow earns $55 million per season which keeps him as the league’s top earning quarterback, at least for now. Justin Herbert of the Chargers is presently earning an average of $52.5 million, Lamar Jackson of the Ravens makes $52 million per year, the same as Goff, while Jalen Hurts of the Eagles is at $51 million annually.

Love doesn’t have the proven track record of these other quarterbacks. He’s only been a starter in the NFL for one full season. Including playoffs, that means 20 games started, one in 2021, 17 regular season games and two playoff games in 2023.

Love struggled at times in the first half of the season. His accuracy on deep throws was inconsistent. He was slow to read defenses at times. His offensive line was still learning and adjusting to some new players and the team’s young receivers and tight ends were still learning. Many times, the young receivers ran the wrong pass patterns which resulted in incomplete passes or interceptions depending on the mistake and the play.

Still, after an October slump, Love finished the season like an elite quarterback. In the final eight games of the regular season, Love completed 70.3 percent of his passes for 2,150 yards. He threw 18 touchdown passes and just one interception. That gave him a quarterback rating of 112.7 which was second in the league.

In the playoff win over the Cowboys, Love played an outstanding game. He completed 16-of-21 passes for 272 yards and threw three touchdowns. He had a perfect quarterback rating until his final pass of the game fell incomplete. As a result, his final quarterback rating for the game was “just” 157.2.

Love’s finish to the season proved he was an elite quarterback.

Love also showed leadership qualities from the start. During the offseason, he held a passing camp and invited his young receivers to join him to create chemistry and help the rookies get up to speed. The team responded to Love even before he took over as the starter and that bond became stronger after one season with Love under center.

The Packers are better off signing Love sooner rather than later. Goff’s recent contract just helped the quarterback market go up. Each year, more star quarterbacks have their deals up for renewal and each wants to be at or near the highest paid QB in the league. The salary cap also goes up each year by a significant amount as the NFL continues to earn more money each season.

The Packers should look to lock up Love for a minimum of five years which would keep him in Green Bay through the age of 31. They would be able to secure his services before the price goes up and use one more year to spread out a signing bonus or to manipulate the cap hit over specific seasons.

The time is now. Sometime before the start of training camp, GM Brian Gutekunst should be signing Love to an extension. Crossing this off the organization’s to do list will be a big step towards the team’s next era of being a contending team.

Wonder if he'd sign a 10-year deal like Pat M of the Chiefs? I guess it doesn't matter, they've already re-worked his deal.

They must be haggling over the guaranteed money. Both sides know the deal is going to get done. The length is the only other stipulation they might have differences about.

Nagler mentioned in a video that GB likes to get extensions done in the summer and then make an announcement just prior to training camp, so there is a big positive kicking that off. Could be they are very close and just waiting to close it out.

I'd like to see him win a Super Bowl before I committed to 10 years. What did we get out of Favre his last 10 years (1998-2007)? Where did Rodgers take us his last 10 years?

QBs have a peak window to win, usually before they're 30. If they haven't done it by then, they probably aren't going to do it. Start over.

Since when do we care what other teams do.
Since when should we care what other teams
pay their QB.
This is the Green Bay Packers.
Players Love it here and we Love them.
Money is the cancer of ever great
QB AND OTHERS.
They just cannot produce without
their TEAMMATES.
I stated what has Jordan Love won.?
And if you pay him .
What happens to those around him.
They leave. They don't Block, They don't catch.
They don't win a ring. They don't go to the Sb.
The missing pieces never get bought.
The coaches get fired.

I would say that they don't read your posts either.

What a negative Nelly. The other players know they need a QB too. Where are they going to go that doesn't have one? Jets?

He never complained when Rodgers broke the bank. But he never misses a chance to crap on Love or Gute. Never.

Hating on Love just because you're still butt hurt over Gutey getting rid of #8 is getting quite comical! Pretty sure you'd never do it, but the day is coming, if it's not already here, that you'll have to admit you're wrong.

All the CHTV writers assume Love is going to continue to play great so let’s sign him quickly to a big long term deal. Will anyone even mention the possibility that he does not play that well, or that opponents now have film to study and slow down his progress?

What then if he is signed for the next 5 years at more than 52 mill per?

At least acknowledge the possibility that he “only” develops into a mid-tier QB.

Once they get their "film" (which they had plenty of towards the end of last season and into the playoffs) it's up to the coaches to create plays that work and use the Ds' guesses against them.

That's why I "wish" Love would bet on himself and take a heavily incentivized contract that could end up paying him a bunch more, but not impact the team cap as much while it's trying to build and keep a team around him.

I know! Wish in one hand and sh... in the other and see which get filled first.

I'm sure Dallas had plenty of film on Love while preparing to face him in the playoffs:

16/21...76.2%...272yds...3 TDs/0 INTs...157.2 QB rating.

Those aren't the stats of a "mid-tier" QB. Especially in a road playoff game.

What would you suggest the Packers do?

Dude, really? What were his stats the following week (the 2 interceptions game)?

I think he will be ok but I’m trying to make the point that our sample size is small to be backing up the Brinks truck.

More importantly I worry about cap constraints if the team makes a huge mistake.

Wait. Let’s see how the first half of the season goes. If it costs a tiny bit more so be it. If he sucks then we have dodged a bullet.

What if he is 12-15th ranked QB after week 8? I really don’t know what to do then. But not paying him like a tip 5 QB for sure.

Fair enough. It'll be interesting to see what direction they go in. Personally, I have a very hard time seeing this dragging out into the season.

Just curious...did you have the same reservations about the Packers signing Rodgers to a 6 year contract extension mid-way through his first year as a starter, which put him top 5-6 in the league at the time after 1/2 season as a starter?

I was also anxious about Rodgers contract way back then too. Luckily he earned it (but who knows how things would have gone if they waited a few months).

I think you are probably correct and that management will sign Love. They know him better than I do, that I’m pretty sure of.

I think you've made some very good points. My guess is the Packers have offered JL a substantial, but team friendly, contact. A deal that pays him very well for his second half performance.

Which means Love is betting on himself, and I think the Packers will be more than happy to pay him if he wins the bet. Good stuff!!!

Good points Nitschke. I don't see what is wrong with getting a larger sample size on Love before signing a 5 year deal. If he plays well the team will be giving him a big time contract. Maybe a little more than if he signs today.

But like you wrote, what if he doesn't play like a top rated QB in the first half of the season? Boy, then what do they do?

Fans seem to forget that no team wins the Super Bowl with a QB taking up more than 20% of the teams salary cap. Why is CHTV so eager to see the Packers take that route?

To anyone who doesn't want to pay Love, what is the alternative? Let him walk? Trade him? Then... what? Well, since the Packers would probably be in the top five for draft picks next year if they did this, you could draft another QB. And hope they succeed. But take a look at how that has worked out recently. Not well at all. The Packers invested several years of development in Love, and he has earned the trust of the WR's and TE's. We are finally seeing how LaFleur's offense is supposed to work. Even with (arguably) their best WR hurt most of last year, they outperformed what anyone expected. Remember, when Love took over, the general consensus was if the Packers could have a winning season, and if Love showed improvement during that time, we'd be good. Instead, his confidence and leadership grew exponentially as the season went on. Now, we want to argue how much to pay him? The answer: a lot. Because he appears to be a franchise QB who has a bright future. So, the professionals who get paid to evaluate and decide the value of players will make a decision. Me? Extend him. We've seen what he can do, and I expect him to continue to be very productive for a long time.

Protection first.
Love second.
Let's look at the contracts of Bahk.
Then Rodgers.
The Z. Smith.- wanting more.
And do I need to bring up Nick Perry?.
The Bonus Money is the guarantee. The Prize.
But regardless how much you want Love signed.
The problem is he won't be a kid.
He'll be a veteran, and with that comes changes.
That won't guaranteed.

I would offer Love a highly incentivized extension. Not more than 50% guaranteed money, at least for the next 2-3 seasons. At that point or even sooner the Packers can restructure the deal with a new and longer term extension with more guaranteed money which Love will have either earned or not by that point.

He had a solid first season as a starter but he is a long way from being an elite NFL QB. He has yet to be named a pro-bowler or MVP or win a Super Bowl. Let's see him stack success and earn some league honors before we annoint him and pay him like an HOFer. Let's see him play some games in his second season as a starter. Hopefully he doesn't regress. No reason why the Packers can't wait until mid season to offer Love his extension. Yes, it could cost more than it would if the Packers did it prior to the season but it still is a matter of the guaranteed amount.

The Packers should not take the "we're not idiots approach" with their salary cap again. Thanks, Since '61
