Sitton Signs Contract Extension With Packers

Offensive lineman Josh Sitton has reportedly signed a long-term contract extension with the Green Bay Packers.

Offensive lineman Josh Sitton has reportedly signed a long-term contract extension with the Green Bay Packers, according to the team's official website.

"Sitton, the Packers starting right guard, agreed to a new long-term contract extension on Friday just before he was about to enter the final year of the rookie deal he signed as a fourth-round draft pick in 2008," writes Mike Spofford of Packers.com.

The article says Sitton didn't want contract talks to be a distraction during the season.

There was no word on the either how much or how long the contract is for other than it was "long-term."

“It’s a big weight off my shoulders,” Sitton is quoted as saying. “That was what we said from the beginning, that we wanted to get it done before the season. That way I didn’t have to deal with it and I could just focus on playing football. That’s what I do. I’m a football player.”

The Packers had $12.8 million in salary cap room as of August 29 per Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com.

Several other players have contracts expiring after the 2011 season that also may be candidates for extension including tight end Jermichael Finley, wide receiver Jordy Nelson, punter Tim Masthay, center Scott Wells and running back Ryan Grant.

How much room the Packers will have following Sitton's extension will be worth noting.

UPDATE: Sitton wrote on Twitter that he will be a Packer "for 6 more years" presumably indicating that he signed a five-year extension.

Good news. I'm guessing they're talking to Finley already, maybe even Rodgers.

As a fan who was never worried about Sitton being extended, I have to admit that a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, and I can finally take a deep breath and relax.

Sitton's signing means I don't have to endure the constant whining and worrisome complaining from fans like "TT better open up the wallet and pay Sitton. Quit being such a tight-ass, Ted, AND PAY THE MAN!" or the ever-popular "you can kiss Sitton goodbye, everyone knows TT doesn't pay for OGs". And so on.

Thanks, TT, for shutting up this bafoons sooner than later.

Great signing.

Of the big guys remaining, I'd rank them in order of importance:

1. Jermichael Finley
2. Tim Masthay
3. Scott Wells
4. Jordy Nelson
5. Ryan Grant.

I would be shocked to see Ryan Grant get an extension. He is not a young back, and our depth at RB has increased greatly. He would have to come at a very home-town friendly price tag, I think.

It's better to let a player go a year early than a year too late, as Ron Wolf's old adage goes.

Scott Wells is interesting as well. The Packers would probably rather replace Wells than extend him, again, due to his age. The problem is, they don't have ANYONE to replace him. They tried to do it with Spitz, but he went out injured and Wells clearly was not going to let his job slip away again. He's very good, and makes up for his lack of size with fight and smarts, but there is room to upgrade for the long run. Packers probably will have to resign him though.

Yeah, I don't think there is any way Grant gets re-signed (so I should have probably left him off the list entirely).

Wells, honestly, I have very little opinion of. He's been a staple of the line for a while now, seems solid enough, but the Packers could probably upgrade there. They can probably get a good center at #32 in the draft, right?

You beat me to it Oppy. I will be beyond shocked if Ryan Grant is re-signed, especially with two young guns in waiting. As far as Wells goes, they may need to actually draft a center at some point rather than just moving other Olinemen to center in an attempt to replace him.

I also wonder what the re-signing of JJ plus the excess of intriguing young receivers will do for the prospect of re-signing Jordy. I wouldn't be shocked if DD was done after this year, but still, with Cobb and possibly West or Gurley or both in our future, I don't know that it's a given that we bring Jordy back. I do like Jordy though.

In order for the Packers to resign Finley he not only has to prove that he can stay healthy, but also prove to the Packers that they are a much better team with his services compared to Quarless, Williams, Taylor, ect.

If the team goes through another one of their patented early to mid-season slumps, I don't know if they should resign him. He'll probally want Vernon Davis type money (wether that's justified or not is for another conversation) and seeing how the Packers won the SB without him he seems like a luxury to have rather than a necessity.

The Packers may not always be able to resign good players in their primes, and I'd hate to see the Packers not be able to resign a player in a more important role at the expense of Finley's contract.

For what it's worth, the -ONLY- thing standing between Finley and a justifiable "Vernon-Davis type contract", IMO, is his ability to stay healthy.

I may ruffle some feathers, but if I'm given the choice of a healthy Davis or a healthy Finley, I would take Finley and would.not.blink.

He has to sign Finley first before he has a monster season and will want more money, right now Finley hasn't proven enough to warrant huge pay. Nelson Isn't as likely to have a monster season so his pay won't change much before or after season.

But actually masthay is probably the next in line cause were not talking too much money. I think wells may not get a contract, they have really wanted to replace him, mcdonalds performance lately may have saved wells, but I could still see them drafting a center that is bigger even know wells plays fine.

Brian, where is the info coming from about Masthay's contract expiring after 2011? Rotoworld shows him signed through 2012 (490,000) and he doesn't appear on Tom Silversteins list of free agents for next year either. Is there a better source for contract info I'm missing out on?

Good question, Ted. It was brought up by Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com that he is a candidate for extension. For the record, Seifert never said that Masthay's contract was expiring. I just assumed it was, and that's my fault.

Got it ... Thanks. Maybe Kevin's thinking is he is outperforming his deal then which I suppose you could make an argument for if he keeps improving at this pace. One of the brighter spots in the preseason IMO and as Al said lower dollar amount than the others in the extension talk list.
