Seahawks vs. Packers: Rants & Raves

Much like we thought when the schedule was released in April, this week's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks will be a pivotal one.  More so for the Packers, as they need to continue to improve their record to keep up with the division-leading Detroit Lions and also the Minnesota Vikings.  On the one hand, it's a big of "here we go again" with a game against Seattle that will likely make or break Green Bay's season.  On the other hand, the Packers (and especially their fans) should just be thankful that the team has managed to provide a meaningful game this late in the season.

This team always seems to find a way to stay in the hunt but face a very steep challenge in a Seattle team that has been playing well and also has their sights set on making another run at a Super Bowl title.  While not mathematically, the Packers' season may very well come down to whether nor not they win this game.  Win and they stay very much alive in the chase to win the division and get a huge boost of confidence.  Lose and their fate is out of their hands and many things then need to happen for them to make the postseason.  Here's a look at some of the bigger talking points surrounding this match up.

Rants

Where's Jimmy?

Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham isn't hard to find.  At 6'7" and usually split out wide, he literally stands head and shoulders above the others on the field.  The Packers have struggled against tight ends for what seems like decades now.  If they aren't reaching the end zone, a quick glance at the box scores this season shows that they're heavily targeted.  A lack of a defensive presence in the middle that can run with and make things difficult for tight ends has plagued the Green Bay defense for at least a few years running.  At the crux of the problem is an inconsistent pass rush due to injury.  Quarterbacks have too much time and tight ends are simply bigger than most defensive backs.  Give them more than five seconds to work and they'll create a reachable target.

The other issue injuries creates is the question of who covers the big guys?  If it's Micah Hyde, chalk up seven points for the opposition.  He's been awful in coverage this season but because the secondary was so banged up, he was forced to play more than is optimal.  Hopefully the continued recovery of Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins will allow defensive coordinator Dom Capers some more options in how to tackle Graham.  The other part to this equation is the health of the linebackers.  If safety Morgan Burnett is moved up to cover the inside linebacker spot, that is one less experienced option to run with Big Jim.  Ha Ha Clinton-Dix can certainly try his hand at it, but can the outside corners handle Doug Baldwin, Tyler Lockett and Jermaine Kearse?

Graham is my X-factor in this game.  Many say the Packers need to shut down the Seahawks running attack but to me, Graham has the potential to be the dreaded "He's killing us all day!  Why don't they put someone on him?" guy.

Great, A Mobile Quarterback. . .

Russell Wilson sprained his MCL back in week three and there were questions about whether his mobility would be compromised and for how long.  He must still have a stockpile of that recovery water that he drank to recover from a concussion caused by a "car wreck" hit from Packers linebacker Clay Matthews a few years back.  Wilson is back to his usual self, running around and extending plays.  This has proven to be a huge boost to the passing game and does not favor the Packers at all.  With defenders likely having to spy Wilson, Seattle receivers will have more room to work and get open.  I can foresee some killer third down conversions in this fashion that keep the Packers defense on the field and the Seahawks offense moving towards the end zone.

As a pure rusher, Wilson is only averaging 3.8 yards per carry and has just one rushing touchdown this season.  The Packers kept him from running free in the NFC Championship game and forced several turnovers.  It will be up to the Packers front seven, whoever that be on Sunday, to do the same.  With Julius Peppers and Joe Thomas likely to see extended action, that is asking a lot.  But as stopping Aaron Rodgers is the key to beating the Packers, the same goes for Wilson and Seattle.

Get Off The Field

The Packers rank 24th in third down defense, giving up just over 41%.  That doesn't sound great but when you consider the reputation Seattle's defense has and that they're actually worse (42.6%, 27th in the league) this game could be filled with a lot of dashed hopes for fans on both sides when their defense can't get off the field.

It always seems like the Packers get in favorable third and long situations, only to leave a guy wide open for a baffling conversion or, even worse, allow a 10-yard draw play to work.  In a game where points are likely to come at a premium, getting off the field is paramount for the defense.  Giving a quarterback like Wilson another crack is asking for big trouble.  And with a defense like Green Bay's that is very beaten up and with little in reserve, keeping guys fresh is a must.

Tis Not the Season To Be Giving

Very simple here: the Packers are -5 in the giveaway/takeaway category while the Seahawks are a +6.  The Packers used to be at the top of this list annually but have not had the ball bouncing their way as much this season.  If they're not going to get any turnovers, that's one thing, but they can't give it away at all.  An opportunistic Seahawks defense lurks and in snowy/slippery conditions, they'll be coming after the football.

Raves

Shades Of Rodgers Past

Aaron Rodgers has returned to form of late and is making more of those "Aaron Rodgers" throws.  The man has set a bar that is hard to maintain that includes throws like the second touchdown to Davante Adams in Philadelphia, for example.  But with receivers Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams breaking out, there is hope that the magic can continue.  Seattle was dealt a blow when they lost safety Earl Thomas to a broken leg last week.  Thomas has been one of the league's best and is a spiritual leader of that Seahawks defense.  When one of Thomas, Kam Chancellor or Richard Sherman are out, the Seattle defense isn't quite the same.

Ty Montgomery has been efficient out of the backfield and will get his touches as will former Seahawk Christine Michael, but this game will be won or lost on the arm of Rodgers.  The Packers aren't going to put up 100 yards rushing by any stretch and with the weather conditions not favorable for offense, Rodgers will have to find ways to pull more rabbits out of his hat in order to get a big win.  Fortunately, the way he's been playing lately, that's not impossible.

Safety Valves

I mentioned Morgan Burnett and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix earlier as keys to slowing down Jimmy Graham.  Quietly, these two have formed one of the more underrated safety tandems in the NFL.  They're not getting turnovers so the numbers don't flash, but each has become a staple of this Packers defense.  Burnett has added some linebacker play to his role this season, out of creativity, ability and necessity.  He continues to excel in run support and has been an able blitzer.  Clinton-Dix has honed his craft as a deep safety and is making opposing quarterbacks pay for bad decisions.

With the loss of Sam Shields and while Randall and Rollins were out, Burnettt and Clinton-Dix were the glue trying to keep the secondary together with so many undrafted players taking on full time roles.  The team still lost three straight so they didn't prove to be saviors, but they've turned into pillars on the Green Bay defense.  A big day against Seattle further cements these two as one of the league's top duos.

December Snow

The Packers, with Rodgers under center, have only lost one December game at home.  That was back in 2008.  Seattle is just 2-3-1 on the road this season.  The forecast calls for snow and winds at 10mph, which the Packers played in last week.  If nothing else, they need only look back a week for how to handle those conditions.  The footing will be slightly slower and for a team that lacks a lot of speed, the Packers may get a bit of a break there.  While the cold weather isn't the same advantage it used to be back in yesteryear, it re-emerged last week for the Packers against Houston.  Can Mother Nature dial up another doozy for this weekend's tilt?  Win or lose, a snow globe at Lambeau Field is always a spectacle to be enjoyed.

It. Is. Time.

Nick Perry is out.  Clay Matthews, Jake Ryan and Blake Martinez are questionable.  LaDarius Gunter has an illness that has kept him out of practice all week.  As has been the case all season, every healthy guy on the roster has to show up big in this game.  Asking guys who are role players and reserves to play a big role is more than asking a lot.  But it has to happen this week.  Jayrone Elliott, Joe Thomas, Carl Bradford, Micah Hyde, Kentrell Brice and Josh Hawkins: It. Is. Time.

Why am I the only one who thinks the weather will favor the Seahawks more than the Packers? Better run game and better D have always given teams an edge in cold weather. Rodgers only threw 200 yards in a victory last week for example.

The only real chance the Packers have is if the Seahawks continue to suffer more injuries to key players. Rawls for example nearly suffered a concussion last week.

Not saying I hope anyone gets hurt, it's just a game, I'm just saying it really is the only chance GB has.

I agree with you on the weather advantage going to the Hawks, but I disagree with a player or players getting hurt is the only chance the Pack have at beating them.

Of course this won't be an easy win, but we have more playmakers on Offense than the Hawks have on Defense. It's on the coaches and players to take advantage.

The Hawks on Offense aren't scary, but hell, Washington isn't either an...nevermind.

Let's just hope the Pack bring their best game with what the have =)

The Seahawks have had the No. 1 scoring defense since 2012, and are on pace to break the NFL record for consecutive years of scoring D this year. I could not more strongly disagree with you about the talent differential. However our offense might have stood a chance had Eddie Lacy stayed healthy.

The Seahawks have better team speed, particularly on defense. It might be their main advantage. Snowy weather might be an equalizer in that regard.

@Reynoldo

I agree. The snow might slow them down + no Earl makes them less rangy. This could get reeeeeally interesting IF (a big IF) the playmakers on Offense show up for 4 quarters.

I'm looking forward to see how the Hawks plan on matching up with Cook (slot) + Montgomery (backfield) -- hell, or even 5-Wide. I think some here aren't giving Earl Thomas enough credit. I don't think that D will look the same. I think this is worse than losing Chancellor the season before when we played them at home.

I think you might be living in the past a little bit when it comes to the Seattle running game, Chad. This ain't "Beast Mode" anymore. In my opinion, Seattle is NOT that great a rushing team, and they are not clearly better than GB.

I understand that Lacy's trip to IR skews things a bit, but here are how the stats look. GB actually gains more yards per rush than SEA (4.3 to 4.1) RUshing yards per game is basically a push. SEA only gains 2.4 yards per game more than GB. So that's hardly a clear advantage to SEA.

Now about the defenses... well, you probably have something there.

With the exception of a few long runs by Rawls last week, both teams have relied on their QBs of late to generate run yards recently. I think this game is more of a crap shoot than people think.

Yep, that and Wilson taking off and running and converting first downs are my biggest fears. Hell if Brock Osweiller and the pitiful Texans offense can do it then Wilson sure can, I don't care if they're playing on a glacier.

Come on guys -

If the Packers were, say, the Chargers, and none of us cared about them at all, would we REALLY be giving that team the time of day?

Other than QB and OL, this team is just not that good. They put it together in 2014. Then choked. 2015 was awful. This year has been awful.

The time to get some new people in positions of power for this team should have already happened. It NEEDS to happen after this season. GM and Head Coach. The entire coaching staff.

The fact of the matter is that Green Bay hasn't beaten anyone who is actually, you know, good. The last two teams were not good. They lost to 2 bad teams in the midst of a month long losing streak before that.

The defense can't rush the passer. They are mediocre at stopping the run. They can't defend the pass. The offense can't run the ball. The special teams are truly "special" more often than not.

What is truly to like as a TRUE super bowl threat? I just don't see the answers on the roster, and I don't see that changing with the current leadership structure.

Fire TT and Fire MM.

I can't say that I disagree. While I do hope that somehow we win, and that if we do lose we do so after finally, using all the players we have asked be used, play and we go down fighting. Either way it's time for TT and MM to go sooner rather than later. Seasons end is the time to start fresh and build again around the core we have. 2014 was the watershed moment that was postponed until now.

You're right but many have been saying this for years. --- Both TT and MM have at least one year left on their respective contracts. -- Both will be back in 2017. --- Sorry, but, you've got one more year of mediocrity from the Pack. -- A new regime will provide a fresh start in the 2018 season --- no sooner.

Then again maybe we'll run the table through January.

Seattle is back to playing lousy on the road but Wilson had injuries and so did Rawls. People keep pointing to the Tampa Bay loss but Tampa has been playing better on both sides of the ball for the last several weeks. They also have a WR named Evans who WAS the difference in the game. As much as I love Jordy Nelson, he's no Mike Evans, not 12 games back from an ACL in his 30's.

Yesterday I gave an example of just how well the Seahawks have drafted since 2010 once Schneider got there. Looking at the drafts post Schneider you'd think Thompson has been lost since Schneider left. Look at 2010 through 2012 and there's no comparison. He's also not afraid to make a trade or spend in Free Agency, not if he feels it will make his team better.

Bearmeat is right, what is there truly to like on the Packers as a SB threat? The players Thompson played the "Hope Game" with didn't make the 2nd or 3rd year jumps or they were injured. But it's not like Randall or Rollins were shutting receivers down when healthy, just ask Diggs for example. It's not like the Packers have a WR like Greg Jennings to make those amazing 3rd down catches 30 yards down field..27 Tampa. They also don't have that leader like they had when Wood was here. Need a reminder? Watch the new "A Football Life" on NFL Network about Wood, it will remind you EXACTLY what a Leader does. Since Thompson is so quick to push anyone out the door close to 30, is it any wonder why the Packers lack in Leadership??

It starts and ends with Aaron Rodgers and it's time for a GM to be in Green Bay that will do EVERYTHING he can to win another SB or two while Rodgers is still somewhat young. It's a damn shame to have QB's like Thompson has had and been to ONE SB!!! A good draft, a few Free Agents and the Packers are right there.

The interesting piece was in JSOnline yesterday...the Packers currently have 13 UDFAs on their roster. Seattle has over 20...

Apparently Schneider is a better TT than TT.

He absolutely is. TT is still a top 10 GM in the league, but when you are as stubborn as he is about draft and develop, you HAVE to be THE BEST to get by. TT isn't that good.

And let's not let MM off the hook. Capers defense has been middling to downright bad for the last 6 years. HOW does he still have a job? And let's not forget that MM has cycled through offensive coaches pretty regularly too - so it's not like he doesn't know that he can fire people.

To add on: apparently the Seattle coaching staff hasn't had the issues the Packers have with prepping these UDFAs to play.

We've had significant talk on these recent threads about how the Packers are at a disadvantage with limited practice time and a roster full of rookies and UDFAs year after year. Well, Seattle has that issue, too...but it doesn't seem to be stopping them.

Not only are all his lieutenants better than TT, the coaching staffs those guys hired are at least as good or better. I'd take MM over Jack Del Rio and Andy Reid. But not over Carrol.

I think the real truth here is that the schemes that every single one of those defenses play is simple. See the ball. Play the ball. Stay in your zone or on your man. Capers system is very complicated. That's a bad combo with UDFAs/draft picks manning half the team annually.

Sometimes drafting is just pure luck. I think TT was very lucky/good to draft Matthews, Colins, Franklin, Sitton, and Rodgers. While we have enjoyed watching Matthews, and Rodgers live up and exceed their potential, Collins, Franklin and Sitton are no longer on this team because of injuries. (I know Sitton was cut, but do you really think he was healthy whenTT cut him? Besides the point being he was an All-Pro player that TT drafted in the later rounds.)

I ask this question, how good would the Packers had been if Collins had remained as starter? How good would the Packers be if Franklin was still available? I think TT has been very fortunate to have drafted some very good players. We overlook those successful picks and say why not Sherman, or Wagner? I think TT has had his share of good picks, I also see that Green Bay has had terrible luck in keeping players healthy. In fact many career ending injuries to players that were or would have been as impactful as Sherman and Wagner.

Every team has or will experience the injuries that Green Bay has accumilated over the last few years. The key is to overcome them and field a competitive team. This year it's almost impossible, but I believe that there will be changes within the coaching tree and that next year all of these 1st and 2nd year players will add depth to a championship team.

So will Green Bay win today? I doubt it, but if they fight like junkyard dogs and make it competitive...then I have no doubt they have turned a corner somewhere and have sharpened their focus for bigger goals.

I added Franklin to prove a point....Green Bay does draft some good guys. Even when they do it seems bad luck happens and it seems to me the serious injuries happen to the Packers more than other teams. Can't prove it but maybe because I follow them closer than other teams.
BTW...Franklin may have been a better RB than Sproules but we will never know.

Hey, going back, we lost Sharpe, Collins, Finley now Shields probably. Some serious talent lost there. So just because we don't have a top shelf S, DB or TE right now doesn't mean we didn't draft any.

I see TT's problem mostly being so entrenched that he is a bit 'stiff', not as agile as he could be in foreseeing and/or reacting to situations and opportunities. This year we've see him break out a bit more than usual and I think its a good thing.

Think on this, after last season, what did we all think come draft time, we needed ILB, DL, backup OT and WR right? Well, we got a great pick in Martinez, we got a solid project guy in Fackrell, we got a surprise talent in Lowry and a steel in Spriggs. Clark isn't splashy but makes plays and with time I think will be a solid guy. Over all, a pretty decent draft.

Now fast forward to 4 weeks ago and look at how everyone was all of a sudden complaining how we have no talent and TT can't manage.

Walker OG is young and hasn't missed a beat after Sitton left. Sure he can grow, but he's far and away better than Barclay ever will be. Shrewd move, now we have money carried over so we can sign pretty much whoever we want of our FA's next year.

Do we still have holes, you bet. But tell me this, what year can anyone say, that any NFL team doesn't have holes to fill ??? It's part of the game. And right now, the guys who would have, and should have gotten their skills honed on the PS, have had to do so in real game situations, and in all the shortcomings along the way, remember, they are kids and are learning, and now, have real game experience. They have grown in the fire and this team will be better in the long run for it.

The issue, or should is say, the predominant issue, has not so much been the injuries, but rather how they were focused. First they took out the DB's, then RBs, followed by the ILBs and now the OLBs. It is common to lose one at those positions at any given time in the year and the next man steps up, but to lose not just your 1st line of DBs but your2nd as well puts guys on the field who are out of position or are accustomed to nickle and dime situations at best. We didn't just have a lot of injuries, they went deep at key positions that teams have been able to exploit.

With last string DBs starting passing attacks are obviously going to be better against us. Without a running game, teams can focus on locking down the passing attack which slows down the offense.

AR was obviously off earlier in the year. This appears to have been corrected in his play recently. A very good sign.

I don't care who you are, if you lose your top 4 DBs at any given time, your 5 and 6 guys aren't going to give you the same level of play. NE, SEA, DEN...nobody. This season has just been kinda that perfect storm.

MM tends to be a little pig headed at times BUT he can adapt as seen the past few games. He just seems to take a little more time that others might take. TT could sign more FA's, both in house and out of house for sure, BUT, he still has is a good foundation for his approach. It just needs a few tweeks to be more agile in the ever changing NFL. (and he has shown a little of that this season with the RB trade and pick ups)

We are starting to get players back and it's beginning to show on the field. We are still having to use injured players in key positions and there are still a few who are 'almost there'. IF we can pull this one out, bodies should start making their way back on the field again at LB positions and Michaels should be getting more familiar with the offense to get more snaps in. The question is, will it be too little too late to make it into the playoffs. If we do make it, and guys are close to full strength again, there is a possibility of a run I think.

We just have to survive today first. I look for MM to pull out all the stops and the guys to come out fired up big time. It's games like this that are the reason real players play the game.

At the end of the season, I don't see a firing of any one. I honestly don't see Ted stepping down either. What I think would be extremely neat though, would be if he handed off the draft process to EW while he advised from the sideline and let the kid cut his chops to see how he does. Not likely, but a novel idea I think.

Am I the only one who thinks that Jimmy Graham is horribly overrated? I will certainly agree that the Packers have never been very good at defending the TE, but Jimmy Graham is a far, faaaaar cry from Gronkowski.

First, let's just say it: Graham is a WIDE RECEIVER, and his performance should be evaluated in that light. He's not a tight end. He's one of the worst blocking TEs in the league. Maybe the weather conditions will prompt SEA to use him more as a blocker today, but I will be thrilled if the Seahawks decide to play Graham as an in-line blocker all day, Sure, you can give him a few snaps there now and then, but in general that's using him wrong and squandering the talent that he has.

He's a wide receiver - a really huge wide receiver who uses his size/speed ratio to create matchup problems. And considered as a wide receiver, he's nowhere near as good as his reputation. Statistically, he's Davante Adams. Just let that settle for a while. (Adams 59 rec, 793 yards, 13.4 average, 8 TDs; Graham, 57 rec, 769 yards, 13.5 average, 5 TDs.)

Everyone raves about how great a GM Schneider is - and he's certainly not bad - but he whiffed on Graham. He gave up C Max Unger (2X Pro-bowler, and 1X first team all-pro in his 7+ year career), PLUS a first round draft pick, PLUS a big time contract to get Graham. If Schneider could do it all over again .... I guarantee, he wouldn't.

Let's let the game be played. Anyone who thinks that the injuries this season have no impact on the team is crazy, starting running back, almost every linebacker and several defensive backs as well as 3 offensive linemen, how could any team overcome this? We have blamed the coaches but they can only coach the players available. I hate to use this term but it is what it is.
