Seahawks Reportedly Interested in Packers CB Tramon Williams

Williams reportedly rejected a two-year deal worth $8 million with the Packers.

If the Green Bay Packers do not re-sign Tramon Williams by the start of free agency on Tuesday Mar. 10, and it's unlikely they will, the Seattle Seahawks will reportedly make a run at the veteran cornerback, according to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The Seahawks will be looking for a replacement for Byron Maxwell, who is one of the most highly-rated cornerbacks in free agency and isn't expected back.

According to McGinn:

The Packers have told Williams they'll take him back on a two-year contract worth $8 million, according to a source. The team's proposal was rejected.

Williams would prefer returning to Green Bay but is seeking a three- or even four-year contract averaging at least $5 million. The source said Williams wanted significant guaranteed money as protection against being released.

Last week, a personnel director for an NFC team estimated Williams' value on the free-agent market at about $5 million per year. An executive in personnel for another NFC team said Williams should command an average of between $4 and $6 million.

Williams may very well have a productive season or two left in him, but at 31 years old (32 by the time next season starts) it's highly unlikely he has three or four. And his alleged desire for a high amount of guaranteed money makes it all the more unlikely he comes back to Green Bay.

The Packers have other options at the cornerback position, and that may or may not include fellow free agent Davon House. Even if House doesn't come back, the Packers have players like Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde and Demetri Goodson all under contract in 2015.

As someone entering free agency for the first time and at just 25 years old, House figures to garner at least as much interest on the open market.

One can easily connect the dots between Green Bay and Seattle and see the link to former Packers executive John Schneider having interest in a player that was acquired during his time with the Packers.

2 years for $9 million with 30% guaranteed was about my personal ceiling for re-signing Tramon, who I think is still competent. I'd do a 3rd year if no (or just a little bit of) guaranteed money was prorated for the third year. Wonder what House is looking for?

If you check the list of available FA's, House is way down the list. Tramon is pretty high. Don't think House will be offered any bank breaking contracts.

Sounds like Tramon is viewing this as his last shot to grab some big money. I can't blame him for that. I wish him the best of luck and hope he finds it.

If it doesn't work out like that, I would love to see him back on the Packers' terms.

2 years, $8 mil strikes me as more than fair. I'm surprised they even offered him that.

Yeah, its not really a typical Thompson type of move.

I am wondering if they turned it down to see what they could get in free agency, and if they aren't going to get as much as they wanted, that they will come back and take that deal.

I would not be at all surprised to find that Seattle has no such interest in Tramon and his agent is planting a story about the big, bad Seahawks with Packer media sources in an effort to drive up the offer from the Packers.

NFL FA sees an annual misinformation campaign that rivals the Allies efforts at Calais leading up to the Normandy invasion. And what better guy to play the role of General Patton than John Schneider when it comes to Packer players?

Well, that is why we need to just stay calm and wait till it happens. Right now there is a lot of misinformation going on. Agents are trying to drum up their clients as much as they can. In a few days we will start finding out the truth for these players.

misinformation? or misdirection. My guess is that they're faking it to tramon, but giving it to Davon House. That's what I'd do.

Sign House!!!

I don't see how Seattle can give Tramon a better contract than the Packers. McGinn seems to suggest that the years are more important than the salary, and I don't see Schneider agreeing to a 3 year deal given Seattle's history of developing corners.

Looks like there will be significant changes for next year's roster. Not really a surprise in today's NFL and TT is to be commended for holding the line on salaries.

But I have got to chuckle at those who viewed the NFC Championship loss to the Seahawks as "motivation" for next season given the looming personnel changes will make it a distinctly different Packers team in 2015.

Oh well, Silverstein tweeted out Hawk may return, so all is good in GB, right?

It's March 3. Maybe just a tad early to bury the 2015 Packers.

Who, besides you, is BURYING the Packers?

I just scoff at the notion that certain fans trumpet that the players will be motivated by the NFC Championship loss to the Seahawks when so many of the 2014 Packers (Bostick, B. Jones, who knows who else) will be playing elsewhere next season and 15-20% of the roster will be new to the team.

If Tramon departs, TT might even have a trick or 2 up his sleeve for a replacement who is even better.

I've been reading a lot of great posts lately on a number of Packer sites, but then they blow it by saying we should sign Suh. The Pope has a better probability of winning the Powerball than we have of TT signing Suh. I just want him out of the NFC North.
