Ryan Grant Receives Roster Bonus

The Packers have paid their veteran running back the roster bonus that was not due until the 15th day of the new league year.

Some NFL observers have spent the (non) offseason wondering if the Packers would possibly wait to see how running back Ryan Grant looks once he's back on the practice field before paying him the $1.75 million roster bonus that was due him on the 15th day of the new league year (Which would be August 21st)

It would seem the Packers feel they have no need for such assurances.

From Tom Silverstein:

In case anyone thought Packers RB Ryan Grant might take a cut, he was paid his $1.75M roster bonus, which means he's the starter going in

Grant is slated to make $3.5 million in base salary in 2011.

With the departure of Brandon Jackson and the retention of Grant, the depth chart at halfback heading into camp would appear to be Grant, Starks, Green, Nance. Expect that order to change slightly as the season progresses.

If everyone stays healthy? I doubt it. But you never know.

Good, I like our backfield. Here's to Alex Green being who we think he can.

What are you thinking here? Nance cut? I'd love to see Green emerge as our #1 RB

I'm going to wait to see Green take a pro snap before I declare him a potential starter.

My thinking is Starks will eventually overtake Grant.

Looks like they're not gonna ditch him for cap purposes anyway.

I don't understand the rush...why not wait a week and see that he fully recovered from his injury? What if he lost a step or worse.

I'm with you.

(I was thinking I was turning into a skinflint, arm-chair GM...)

A little love + a little showing of good faith.

And if Daryn Colledge wasn't feeling the love in GB, how the heck did Olsen feel in Chicago? For crying out loud, Olsen was a Pro Bowl caliber line-backer, and they gave him away, for what? A cry-baby O-coordinator who wants a different toy to play with? Looks like a two-team race in the NFC North this year if the Bears don't pull their heads out of their honey jars and get some O-line help (well, I guess they did that, kind of), and some more receiving help now too.

Olsen's a tight end. And a damn good one at that (if used correctly). They were just getting the greatest return on a misused asset that they could before he hit free agency next year. Personally, I'm glad he's out of the division. He looked great against Seattle in the NFC Divisional round and I'm glad our team did everything they could to shut him down in the Championship game.

How soon we forget...This is the same player who used the Favre fiasco in '08 to get a big contract.

Where was the love then!

I think Saine might be ahead of Nance already. Really like the kid. He is pretty much a combo of Grant and Starks. Not at either's level yet obviously but stylistically. Good Size, great speed (national champion at 60M in high school), great hands out of the backfield, good at picking up the blitz. His upside is lightyears ahead of Nance IMO. MM should love the possibilities.

Sounds like this guy should have been a 1st or 2nd round draft pick.

Didn't mean to hype him up to that level. He has some of the same "weaknesses" as Grant and Starks as well. He is a one cut runner with little "make you miss" who split time in college much like Grant and had an injury history and ball security issues in college much like Starks. I don't think he is ever going to be a feature back in the NFL but he could make for a very nice 3rd down back and complimentary piece going forward. Fits much better in our offense than most IMO. Hope he finds a way to stick.

RE:Waiting to see if he was healed -Grant said he was fully healed by the time the playoffs started.
I don't see the wisdom of keeping a $6mil running back in this offense. Starks, Saine and Green are burners who can catch out of the backfield. If two of them can pick up blitzes, it wouldn't surprise me to see them cut/trade Grant. Plus, they've proven they can win without him.
I like Grant on and off the field. He's the poster-child for a Zone Blocking RB. But, the money they're paying him would be better spent keep Cullen Jenkins (IMHO).

"Grant said he was fully healed by the time the playoffs started."

Right, but a player saying it and the teams medical personnel saying it are two different things.
