Rodgers Fires Agent

I can't tell you how much I hate this news. Of all the things Aaron Rodgers should be worrying about right now, getting a new contract is not one of them.

Ok, not trying to be obnoxious, but why shouldn't Rodgers be worried about this? He's a starting QB now... time to get paid like one.

If you got promoted at work, you would expect a raise, right? Wouldn't you be pissed if your boss said, "Listen, Aaron, you have all these new responsibilities now... a raise should be the last thing on your mind."

He signed the contract knowing full well that he might end up playing under it as a starter. I will be very disappointed if he pushes for a new contract. Since when does firing an agent mean you are looking for a new contract. Maybe the guy got drunk and punched his dog. Maybe he insulted his sister. We don't know why he did this, if it is true. PFT has not always been the most reliable source.

Keith - I DON'T PLAY A GAME FOR A LIVING. I can't stand it when people say "If you did such and such at work" Yeah, because sitting in this freekin' office is almost like running around on grass for hours and getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to do it. Give me a break. And yes, I understand he's the starting QB - so now go perform well, and then get paid. You don't just magically get a raise because your name moved up the depth chart.

kapblb - You are absolutely correct - I'm jumping to conclusions a bit - just hate the timing.

I don't see how WHAT he does makes a difference. It's still his job and he works hard at it. In fact, you and I will be able to sit in an office and do what we do as long as we remain competent (and in some cases, perhaps even beyond that.) Rodgers only has a small window of time to make as much money as he can for the rest of his life as he is dealing with a depreciating skillset.

What I can't stand is how people pretend like they wouldn't do the same exact thing under the circumstances. This is fairly common practice around the NFL, and if he can get a bigger and better contract, why wouldn't he seize the opportunity?

Plus, the whole "well, he signed the contract" argument is total BS. Football contracts are non-guaranteed and the organization can just put a guy out to pasture pretty much anytime they please. NFL teams have a much worse track record when it comes to honoring player contracts than the players do.

Keith - Of COURSE it makes a difference. And just because 'that's the way things are done' doesn't mean you can't be the first one to do it differently. Just play. The contract will take care of itself.

Why does it make a difference? "Of course it does" isn't really much support for your position here.

Just play... the same way Javon Walker just played.

Um - but Walker DIDN'T just play. He whined and complained. And then compared going back out on the field to going back to Iraq. But, as you've made clear, those two things are interchangeable. Almost the same thing....

I just don't see how you can make a post about how the Packers won't help Paul Hornung and other former players with medical expenses but then criticize Rodgers for not trying to get as much cash as he can (that's assuming that this is his motive for firing his agent.)

NFL teams chew these players up and spit them out. Further, NFL players have very short careers on average. To me, criticizing a player for trying to make as much money as he can while in his prime is a tad holier than thou.

Um - what was his signing bonus? That bonus alone could set him up for life, if he is smart about it. Holier than thou? You're right. Show me the money. How stupid of me.

And don't put words in my mouth, I never claimed their jobs were interchangeable with any other.

However, people seem to forget this is how these guys earn a living. And as we've seen up close and personal these past few weeks, it can be a nasty business at times. Further, football does not provide one with many transferable skills that would allow former players to work a steady job in retirement. Manual labor would probably be out of the question, since they spent their early years getting their brains bashed in.

"He whined and complained. And then compared going back out on the field to going back to Iraq." What you're doing here is trying to get around the meat and potatoes of this issue by using controversial statements made in poor taste by a player. His whining, complaining, and inconsiderate remarks are not the point here. The point is that he was widely criticized for not "just playing," with his starting QB calling him out in the press. Under immense pressure, he reported. He subsequently tore his ACL, diminishing his future earning potential. Luckily for Javon, his body healed better than most and he's been able to land a few big contracts since then. But what if he wasn't so lucky? What if he had to retire, the same way another #84 had to? He could have found himself in murky financial waters.

Whatever, just make sure you post a nice long rant about how the Packers violated the sanctity of the contract they signed with "Player X" after they unceremoniously dumped said player.

Keith - let's just agree to disagree on this one. I just think it's abundantly clear that the Packers take care of the players that shut their mouths and play. Look at Driver, look at Kampman, look at Jenkins. None of those players switched agents or made noise about a new contract. They did their jobs and were rewarded for it. Plus, as kapblb pointed out - I am probably jumping to the wrong conclusion here. I have no idea what events lead to Rodgers' actions. Just hate the timing of it...

Other solid sources are reporting the agent firing now. The packers blog has it now.
