Revamped Preseason Approach Might Boost the Packers Offense

The Packers will probably play most of their starters in exhibition games

The Green Bay Packers haven't played much of their offensive starters over the last couple of years, especially since Matt LaFleur took over as the head coach in 2019. It was mostly because Aaron Rodgers didn't like to play, and had his merits, because of the clear injury risk versus a limited gain. Rodgers didn't like OTAs (at least until he was traded to the New York Jets) and joint practices either.

Now that Rodgers is gone, there is a clearer path for the Packers to play most of their starters on exhibition games — and for it to make sense.

"There's benefits to going through the mental preparation of getting yourself ready for a game," head coach Matt LaFleur said last year. "Just working out the kinks of your pregame or whatever it might be. Also, just going out there and playing and having the confidence."

Starting hotter

Since 2019, when LaFleur became the head coach, the Packers have scored 10, 43, 3, and 7 points in Week 1. There is one outlier, as you can see: the 43-34 win over the Minnesota Vikings in 2020. But that was the year when preseason was canceled because of covid-19, so no team played any preseason games. In the other three years, the Packers had bad offensive performances — and in the last two, awful overall performances.

The most extreme example was 2021, when the Packers lost 38-3 to the New Orleans Saints. The team ended up winning 13 out of the last 16 regular season games, and the Saints missed the playoffs after finishing 9-8. While it might have been many factors, the Packers already have a big enough sample size to conclude that they have started cold.
So, if they play starters and lose again, we can move on and discuss other reasons. Meanwhile, it seems like preseason games have had at least some impact on their initial performance.

Reps for the young guys

The Packers don't have just a young offense. They have a historically young offense. It's the second youngest offense in the last four decades, just after the 2017 Cleveland Browns. So these young players, especially the receiving weapons, need live reps to accelerate their adaptation to the NFL game. Even Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, who played a decent number of snaps in 2022, missed time due to injury and could use more playing time to speed up their development. This is also true, obviously, for the rookies.

It's also particularly relevant for Jordan Love. While he's a fourth-year NFL veteran, Love had no preseason in his rookie year and missed some time in the 2021 preseason. Moreover, he's had just 83 regular season pass attempts, so it's clear that he needs more playing time against NFL players to feel ready by Week 1. There are areas of his game that will be valued or exposed just when the games truly count, but preseason games might give coaches some insights or points that Love must improve before it's too late.

O-line continuity

The Packers ideal offensive line was pretty good last year, but it didn't play as much as the team would hope. Moreover, the right side of the line is pretty young with Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, and (presumably) Zach Tom. Because of all these factors, it's imperative for the unit to get some reps before the regular season. If David Bakhtiari can't play, ok, that would be understandable, and Yosh Nijman could execute his role as a swing tackle. But the rest of the line, especially the right guys, should be on the field for at least a couple of series in the first two games — the third game is just for the bottom of the roster guys anyway.

Who might not play

Besides David Bakhtiari, there's little reason to play the two main running backs, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. They are both experienced, the system is the same, and there's too much risk involved. Furthermore, there's real competition for the third spot behind them between Patrick Taylor, Tyler Goodson, and Lew Nichols. So these younger players deserve chances to show what they are capable of.

Defense

Rashan Gary is recovering from injury and there's zero chance he plays - rightfully so. Kenny Clark, Preston Smith, De'Vondre Campbell, and Jaire Alexander might not play much either. The defense is on a different timeline than the offense, and these older players don't need as many reps.

This year, the preseason will be incredibly fun for Packers fans. Buckle up, because the young players will take over and give us a glimpse of what they can do.

Can’t wait. So many dynamic new talents added to our roster in all 3 phases of the game. 25 players added via the last two drafts alone.

Wendell, I totally agree with you on the starters to rest, giving more reps for the young players to battle with for positions.

Battles everywhere. WR, RB, TE, OL, CB, S, DL, LB. Punter too! Should be fun, indeed!

What is going to boost the offense is having a QB who buys into the offense.

I think it's more than that, Oppy, although it's going to help.

What have we done, or not done, to improve our offense in the offseason?

Retained Bakhtiari instead of trading him, locked up Jenkins, extended Nijman. Added Musgrave and Kraft. Added Reed. And replaced our QB.

I continue to predict the Packers offense will score more points than it did last year.

It could happen. I'm pretty sure that we'd like to start Watson and Doubs. Reed, obviously, makes it as a rookie and he's been seeing time as the slot guy, the #3 when we go 3 wide.. We have Toure returning. That's 4 right there. and in a perfect world of rainbows and lollipops that's all we'd need.

But you know how much time WRs spend injured....think back to last year or the previous years.....and when they get injured, you actually have to put a guy on the field who won't hurt you. Fortunately, with WRs that's easy because you just line them up outside and tell them to run a pattern, and he'll take at least one defender out of the play.

With the expanded practice squad rules, where you can call up a guy for a few games off your practice squad to take a look at him in a game, I'm not sure it's necessary to carry 6.

Of the others, Wicks is my favorite. He's got the size and speed I like in WRs, and he looks like he might be a threat as a blocker on runs. Everything I've read about him kind of says he could really use some time to develop, and I'd bet he's a better WR by the end of October than he is right now.

We kept 7 WRs last year and we’ll probably do the same this year. 6 WRs at a minimum.

Watson, Doubs, Toure, Melton, Reed, Wicks plus whoever wins between Heath, Cotton and DuBose.

Watson missed 6 games and Doubs missed 4 with injury.

Injury history is factor Gutekunst will also have to factor in at TE, where we likely keep 4 in Deguara, Musgrave, Kraft & Davis.

3 RBs (Jones, Dillon & Nichols lll) and 2 QBs (Love, McGough) leaves 9 roster positions remaining to fill out the OL (Bakhtiari, Jenkins, Myers, Tom, Nijman, Walker, Jones, Filiaga, Telfort).

It all adds up fast. Something tells me they stash DuBose from tiny Charlotte University on IR for a year to get him up to speed with NFL route concepts, etc. Maybe they do keep only 6 WRs in order to keep 3 QBs, securing Clifford to this roster, if they like McGough enough.

We all know Gutekunst likes to keep his draft picks. 2023’s TC battles will be fierce. So fierce that I think Runyan, Rhyan & Savage’s jobs are in jeopardy.

Love buying into the Offense isn't the thing on peoples minds, it's how much buy in of Love there really is. Saying the right thing, or expected thing to say, doesn't make it 100% true.

I feel pretty confident and I'll "go out on a limb" and say a first year starter who has been taught one and only one offense during the entirety of his 3 year professional career is absolutely going to run the offense as opposed to play tug-of-war with the coach.

Hopefully it also reflects the fact that this year we won’t be seeing much of last year’s offense at all and the D will be changed up too. Absent injury niggles, and Bakh mostly, hopefully every starter gets some time. While youth needs it particularly, everyone needs to be bedded in the systems before week 2.

A revamped preseason approach will help our defense as well. Since MLF became coach, the Packers have given up 23, 38, 34, and 3 points in the season opener, and those 3 points came against the pathetic Bears in 2019 with Trubisky and a bad offensive line. I would agree that veterans, especially Alexander, do not need to play a huge amount of time in the preseason; but maybe in the third game, most of them need to be out there for a half so that they're ready for Week 1. Andy Reid would typically have his starters play nearly three quarters of that third game, although that could have changed since the fourth game was eliminated.

MLF and Barry need to do some things differently so their respective units are prepared to be in sync when the season starts--sort of a toned down version of throwing caution to the wind, because, after all, it is a young team without the burden of Super Bowl expectations. Barry especially needs to make sure his defense is communicating properly on the field before the games count--no excuses.

I'm looking forward to seeing more starters on the field in the preseason this year, but I bet it will still be less than most of us would like. Other players who I don't expect to see much of, in addition to those mentioned here, are Elgton Jenkins, Devonte Wyatt, T.J. Slaton, Quay Walker, Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, Rasul Douglas, and Keisan Nixon.

We'll see if there is a new approach. This article is based on a lot of speculation. But it's clear the slow start most years was attributable to the lack of 'hardening' that comes during the pre-season.

You're always balancing injury potential vs. getting people set for the season. I suspect one thing: with Rodgers gone it will be more likely to see more veterans playing during the opening games. The vets don't have to play that many snaps but one or two series won't be a bad thing.

I agree with your bottom line. One or two series, but if the offense isn't successful, we should give them another try or two before moving on.

I think injured guys don't help you win games, and the first game that we have to win is in Chicago. Still, you want this team to get confidence in itself, especially when it comes to moving the ball. When all those plays that you've been practicing over and over come together and you've got a guy running towards the endzone, that's confidence building.

Since Love is new, I'd play him most of the first half in the first exhibition game, which means your O-line is in there, too. The backs and WRs can be the other guys. Defensively, I'd be inclined to play most of the game with backups. I don't think the veteran core needs more than about 1 or 2 series.

That sounds about right. One thing that is almost never mentioned in these discussions is how much playing time other teams give their starters during the preseason. Are they really much different than the Packers? Probably not, but I don't know.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While getting reps will help a lot, I still expect an up and down period early in the season as young players learn the nuances of their roles in the cauldron of real games.

However, there is also an upside, more players can grow together over a number of years as so many are young - and continuity over time is a good thing. Additionally, lots of young players means a little less pressure on the cap (and that certainly helps with the debt the Packers piled up with how they did contracts the last few years).

I feel the same as so many other fans, on this site and elsewhere - it's going to be a season with highs and lows (how could it be anything else, given the youth), but what it will be is exciting - watching players grow as they gain experience and learn together.

I'm going to dispute.

If you consider every rookie who might make the team, maybe. But our QB is in his 4th year, the entire offensive line is veterans, as is the backfield. Only at TE and WR are we really young.

Depth needs to be tested. Presumed starters need to be evaluated. Competition within our own team needs to be cultivated.

Only a few veteran players don't need to be out there at all vs injury risk, and if even they play a series or two I think that would be better, but we'll see what they do. It may not be so obvious if it's solely MLF's decision, if he leads by committee, or what; I'm interested in seeing that though.

I could very well be wrong, but I think exhibition reps are better than practice reps, but of course not as valuable as regular season playing time. So JL should get at least a little leg up on meshing with all the young receivers.
