Report: Matt Flynn Will Not Be Back in Green Bay

Coming on the heels of news that the Green Bay Packers have re-signed quarterback Scott Tolzien, it appears as if they'll be moving on from Matt Flynn.

That's the word from Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Flynn capably held down the fort during the 2013 season when Aaron Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone, but as the younger player with the stronger arm, it made sense that the torch has been passed to Tolzien as the new No. 2 guy.

When Tolzien received a one-year deal worth $1.35 million, the dollar amount indicated they were no longer planning on him being their third-string quarterback.

It will be interesting to see if the Packers might change their mind and leave the door open to Flynn after the NFL Draft, depending on how the draft goes.

This year's crop of quarterbacks is considered to be quite shallow with a relatively small number worthy of being drafted and several of them considered develomental-type projects.

In the meantime, Flynn is free to sign with any team he chooses as an unrestricted free agent starting on Tuesday.

I wouldn't be shocked to find out that Flynn is sitting at home in September.

Might sound crazy but I think the Pack should sign Tim Tebow as a #3. He may never be a stud Passer but he could be a good emergency 3rd QB who could play multiple positions and even play some STs.

Since we cant seem to beat Russell Wilson because hes so blessed by God we need to try and tip the balance in our favor somehow and what better way than bringing in Gods adopted son.

100% Serious BTW

Hmmmm, I don't know about that one Clay Zombo. I'd hate to see the Packers use a spot on the 53 man roster for a guy who's proven time and again he can't throw the football. Besides I think if McCarthy ever thought he could develop him, they'd had signed him a year or two ago. We might need that spot for a CB or ILB. I think I'd rather see Flynn back then having Tebow. My God, I can hear Skip Bayless now!!! NOOOOOO!!

Cobb is now getting QB3 money. No need to draft a qb or take Tebow.

Draft Marshall from Auburn and you get a big CB - looked good in the Sr Bowl - and an experienced 3rd QB. Flynn was a good Backup 4 Years ago, but he looks ready for retirement.

I've given up hoping the pack will draft a good/proven QB who has fallen to the mid round(s). They'll always draft a 6th or 7th round developmental QB while #12 is here.

A QB who is good, proven, and falls to mid-rounds. How often do you see that?

I think 31 other teams may agree with you.

There are usually a handful of proven QBs available come the 4th.

I'm confident Zach (QB from LSU), Aaron Murray, that lil guy from South Carolina or Logan Thomas would look much better than Flynn and Tolzien with an offseason or 2 under MM.

Edit: even Greg McElroy

Again, another guy lost and nothing in return. Flynn may be done. His reputation precedes him. Teams would be despirate to take him on as a backup.
I hope if they dump him they do it and get it over with. Time to move on Ted

What are you talking about? When do you ever get anything for an old 3rd string qb with a rag arm? I think he's a free agent too and I believe we got compensation for him the last time he left.

Both Flynn and the Packers have done pretty well with his career, and you write as if TT has done something wrong. We can keep guys like MF when the NFL and unions agree to expand rosters to like 120 or so.

Matt Flynn is one of the luckiest SOBs on the planet.

Think about it. He won a BCS championship with LSU. He then earns a Super Bowl ring with the Packers. He has one great game against the Lions, and makes millions because of it ($9 million guarantee on his contract with the Seahawks). I'm sure he's enjoyed the privileges that come with being an NFL player.

Plus, ince he hasn't played much, he hasn't taken much of a beating, so he won't have oatmeal brains later in life.

If the Pack brings him back for minimum money as 3rd stringer, fine. If he gets another team to pay him as a backup, good for him. We'll always have the memories of the Detroit game to remember him by.
