Report: Jordy Nelson Signs Contract Extension

ESPN's John Clayton reports that Jordy Nelson has signed a three-year contract extension.

I don’t know how he does it, but Ted Thompson has locked up another young, talented player for a seemingly team-friendly contract. This time, it’s wide receiver Jordy Nelson who signed on the dotted line.

ESPN’s John Clayton reports that Nelson signed a three-year, $13.35 million contract extension over the weekend that will keep him with the team through 2014. According to Clayton, the deal includes $5 million guaranteed and will pay Nelson around $4.8 million in each of the first two years.

The 2008 second-round pick celebrated his new deal with five catches for 91 yards and a touchdown during Sunday’s blowout victory over the Denver Broncos.

Nelson’s extension follows teammate’s Josh Sitton’s deal earlier this season and leaves the Packers with one more extension to toil over before season’s end: Tight end Jermichael Finley.

If they can sign Finley, barring an career-ending injury to Rodgers or a TT retirement, this offense will dominate for the next decade! Now time for Capers to ratchet up the D.

Wow. Great job TT and thank you Jordy for putting the team first. So impressed with that guy (and of course Mrs. Nelson for raising him right).

Our offense puts the "NASTY" in "DYNASTY".

Time to get #2...

Not to be a downer but how much money is invested in the receiving corps now?

Funny you weren't complaining when James Jones got HIS $9 million for being the 5th receiver.

This is another great signing at good value for the team of a young, ascending core player.

If you enjoy the unstoppable GB passing game of today (and want it to continue TOMORROW) you have to resign these guys.

Thompson and Ball know what they're doing re: the cap.

Ummm.....I definitely was complaining when the let Jenkins walk instead of Jones, especially when I found out what the eagles paid for him. If I had to pick, I would obviously love to have nelson over JJ. But you can't have 4 WRs on multi-million dollar contracts. It doesn't make sense. Especially when you want to keep your superstar TE. The writing is on the wall for DD and Finley, I'm afraid.

I love it. I've been really impressed with him but with the JJ signing, I thought we'd lose him at the end of the year.

I'm happy to know I was wrong.

Now it is time to get Scot Wells under contract for next year. You can always franchise tag Finley next year.

Wow. Just a phenominally friendly deal for a de facto starting WR. So Jordy will get another nice kick at the can down the road, and he's got $5M guaranteed.

Donald Driver - 2012, avg. $5.7M/yr.
Greg Jennings - 2012, avg. $6.7M/yr.
James Jones - 2013, avg. $3.1M/yr.
Randall Cobb - 2014, avg. $.8M/yr.
Jordy Nelson - 2014, avg. $4.45M/yr.

Total: $20.80/yr. with a bit of rounding.

About 1/6th of the Packers' cap space for the year. I don't know how that compares to other teams. But considering that DD may not make it through 2012, and considering how this offense runs on its WRs, seems about right to me. I seriously doubt that the Packers have got so much money tied up here that they need to worry. Larry Fitzgerald is avg. $15M a year by himself.

I think I might need to start emotionally preparing myself now for the fact that DD will not be a Packer next year. There's no way that Driver and Jones are both on this roster next year, and though cutting Jones is a possibility, he is cheaper and younger than Driver.

It's time. It will create cap space for Finley and Wells. Cobb is humming along as good as or better than expected. They can add someone to the WR group who is cheaper, and who might add a different dimension.

Finley. He's not going to sign for cheap, his goal is to be the highest paid. AR knows he's got to get everything out of him this season, maybe thats part of why he called him out in the media last week.

Finley is likely gone. TT won't pay what he will want. Bold prediction, but for some reason I see it shaping out that way.

On a different note, its going to be a sad day when #80 isn't catching balls in the Green and Gold. I've said it before, I'll say it again, I hope he goes into the Packer Hall long before the Dong Slinger.

Your QB is extremely precise with his passes, to the point that he doesn't need any one guy that's a 'safety net' with an extreme skill-set, if you will. Is Finley worth 'playmaker' money? Even Gates/Davis money?

I see (and saw during the SB run) how you can manufacture touches from other receiving options on the roster you lose with Finley. I don't see any air-apparent to Wells on the roster and a whole host of irreplaceable guys due up after that.

Am I crazy to be less than concerned about retaining Finley?
