Report: Jerry Montgomery Leaves Oklahoma to Join Packers Staff

Montgomery was formerly the Sooners' co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

The Green Bay Packers appear poised to add Oklahoma University assistant Jerry Montgomery to their coaching staff, according to Jason Kersey of The Oklahoman:

Montgomery was Oklahoma's co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. He had only recently been promoted to co-defensive coordinator in January, so he has no game experience in that role. He was Oklahoma's defensive line coach for two seasons in 2013 and 2014.

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops confirmed Montgomery was leaving the Sooners program in a statement released online.

“This is a rare opportunity for Jerry and his family to join one of the finest organizations in the National Football League,” Stoops said. “I appreciate the positive impact that Jerry has made with our defensive line the past two seasons, as well as his many other contributions to Oklahoma Football. The NFL is getting a fine man and a very talented football coach. I support Jerry’s decision to further his career goals working with one of the most stable and successful franchises in pro football.

“The University of Oklahoma continues to be an attractive destination for some of the nation’s elite coaches and players,” Stoops continued. “I have already begun the search process to bring another talented defensive line coach into our program. On behalf of our entire staff, we wish Jerry, Natalie and their family the very best.”

Prior to Oklahoma, Montgomery was also defensive line coach at previous stops at Michigan, Wyoming and Northern Iowa.

There would appear to be a shakeup on the Packers defensive coaching staff that has yet to learned, one of many in Green Bay.

On Sunday, reports surfaced that head coach Mike McCarthy would relinquish play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Tom Clements, who would become associate head coach. Edgar Bennett, meanwhile, would be promoted to offensive coordinator.

The Packers had previously fired special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum while Ron Zook will reportedly be promoted to take over the vacated position.

Currently, Mike Trgovac is defensive line coach in Green Bay, so it's unsure what position Montgomery will hold or whether there's a change in store for Trgovac.

Among other things, quality control coaches scout teams weeks ahead and then set up the scout teams the week of.

It will be interesting to see how many players from Oklahoma come to Green Bay now. Whether through the draft or UDFA's.

Packers are sure making some coaching changes. Must not be happy with the status quo.

yeah, hopefully these changes will improve the team.

Although status quo with the Packers is still better then about 30 other teams in the NFL. The last 6 years the only 2 teams to make the playoffs every year and win the super bowl is the Packers and Patriots.
