Report: J.C. Tretter Expected to Be Placed on Short-Term Injured Reserve

If and when it happens, Tretter won't be able to play until after Week 8 of the season.

The Green Bay Packers are expected to place center J.C. Tretter on short-term injured reserve, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, but as of the end of business on Tuesday, Tretter wasn't listed on the league's transaction wire.

NFL teams are allowed to designate only one player to return per season, like the Packers did with wide receiver Randall Cobb in 2013.

Per league rules, Tretter couldn't begin practicing until after Week 6 and can't play until after Week 8. With the Packers receiving their bye Week 9, Tretter wouldn't be able to play in a game until Week 10 at the earliest.

Described as a fracture by Demovsky, Tretter was injured in the Packers' third preseason game against the Chiefs, leading to rookie Corey Linsley becoming the team's starting center entering the season opener at Seattle on Thursday.

Tretter was ruled out of the season opener as of Monday when the Packers released their first injury report of the season.

This marks the second year Tretter will miss the beginning of the season after breaking his ankle prior to his 2013 campaign and being played on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list before eventually being activated but not playing the last month of the season.

Placing Tretter on short-term injured reserve represents a risk if the team suffers an injury to another key player that might be able return later in the season, but on the flip side, the Packers would be waiting for an injury that may or may not happen that meets the precise requirements of being bad enough to miss several weeks but not bad enough to place on season-ending injured reserve.

If Tretter were placed on short-term injured reserve, it would open up a spot on the 53-man roster the Packers could fill immediately, and although there's several directions the team could go, there's no indication of who they might sign.

When Tretter is able to return, the Packers would have to make a corresponding transaction by making room on their roster.

While Tretter is out, the Packers are thin at the center position with guards Josh Sitton and T.J. Lang serving as the backups, both players more comfortable at guard.

"A couple weeks"...what a joke. What purpose does it serve to constantly talk about serious injuries as if they are minor? I live in Denver, and elway and foxie just tell the truth...and I don't wanna hear the whole team doctors can't properly diagnose until time has passed bs, literally 9/10 injuries last way longer than McCarthy claims.

I keep wondering what's going on with Finley. Not a peep. Same goes for Jolly and to a lesser extent, Pickett.

All are ex-Packers. Only way any of them see GB again is as 'honorary captain' in a pre-season game ten years down the road.

Get healthy Tretter and start practicing at guard because you will not be starting at center this year.

I have thought about this a lot actually. During the offseason/training camp Tretter was the clear cut #1 center.
If Linsley comes in and plays well I don't see them taking Linsley out of the starting spot.

I honestly didn't think Tretter was going to get his job back if he came back in 4 weeks...now that it's at least 8, no way. I think Linsley is going to be good.

Might as well fast forward your entire life until it is "Time.....to die" (as Rutger Hauer said in 'Bladerunner'). You never know what is going to happen, which is why teams have to play the game.

Enjoy the journey, that is where the fun comes, moreso than the final destination.

Does this mean you're gone until next year?

O day of days!

When is the "Ignore user" site feature going to be implemented?

Who knows how the season will play out. What happens if Linsley gets hurt? Have to play the system and get him back ASAP.

Don't like it. By that time Linsley will be entrenched as the starter imo, and if he's not, these first 8 weeks may be ugly at times. Also, given recent history, someone who is more crucial to the goal is bound to get a 4-6 week injury, then we're hosed. Either carry him, or I.R.

All those who wanted EDS resigned last offseason, raise your hand. That's too many to count. Oh well, can always draft another true center in the 1st round in 2015. Ha-Ha.

Has a Packer play come back from injury early or on time with the medical staff's initial time- missed estimates recently? I seriously cant recall one. That's bad considering we lose seemingly an avg of 3 players to various injuries per game. Hopefully he will play again this season.

Either the medical staff is overly optimistic, trying to hide something from competition, or incompetent in most of these instances.

McCarthy lies. That's part of his job description is to lie and be vague about injuries. Most all head coaches do it.

It takes the bone 6-8 weeks to heal. Even if they go by 6 weeks, then he would still need a couple weeks to get back in to football shape. So you're talking a minimum of 8 weeks. Probably more like 9 or 10.

Tretter isn't day to day, so what strategic advantage does it really serve? It just makes him look idiotic.

MM is so sly in his own mind. WHen I hear two weeks from him to me that means out for the season or IR and ten weeks minimum.

Does it really matter. You have to line up no matter who plays and if your second or third string isn't up to the task, it goes back to loving all those late round genius picks of Ted T.

Other teams are deep in talent and don't miss so many beats as the packers.

Hey The Vikes had two running backs in Pre-season that made Lacy look third string. There 4th string guy could back up Lacy and push starks to third and Harris off the team.

That's always been the recent problem with the Packs, no number two's of consequence.
One O linemen gets hurt in the Seattle game and its game over for the team this year.
