Report: Don Barclay Receives RFA Tender from Packers

From all indications, the Green Bay Packers are doing their best to maintain depth at offensive tackle as the clock ticks toward free agency.

Coming on the heels of a report the Packers are closing in on a deal with offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga, it appears they're trying to keep restricted free agent Don Barclay too, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com:

Barclay is still free to test the open market and sign with another team, but the tender offer gives the Packers the right to match any offer he might receive. He can sign his offer with the Packers at any time, a one-year contract that will give him the opportunity to become an unrestricted free agent next year.

Given that Barclay is coming off a season spent on injured reserve with a torn ACL, it's unlikely he'll get much interest, although it can't be discounted entirely.

In his first two seasons with the Packers, Barclay played in 30 games, starting 18, not including playoffs.

Barclay will enter 2015 as perhaps the top backup at tackle, depending on what the Packers decide to do with J.C. Tretter.

Tretter backed up all five positions on the offensive line last season, although he appeared to fare better on the interior—during the preseason—than he did in spot duty at tackle during the regular season.

Insurance policy. Even if Bulaga is resigned, which it seems will be done, one needs backup Ts...

I wonder if MM (or O-Line coaches) will prep Tretter for backup RT while prepping Barclay for backup C and backup G.

I think Linsley is running away with the Center position, btw.

"I think Linsley is running away with the Center position, btw."

Yea, that ship has sailed. Linsley is the center.

I see Barclay as the primary backup tackle (and emergency guard) and Tretter as primary backup center and guard (and emergency tackle).

Very nice depth. Whether it's Vujnovich or a draft pick, the #8 OL will probably be more of a pure tackle (who will not be active on gameday).

Barclay is a nice 6th OL. He's started a bunch of games for them and they have managed to be productive offensively with him. I'm very glad he was tendered.

I just hope there isn't a team out there that thinks he'd be as good inside as I do. They might make a run at him.

I am fine with paying $1.52 to tender Barclay. It is not guaranteed, so we will see what Tretter looks like and what else TT acquires.
