Railbird Central Podcast: Matt Flynn Named Backup Quarterback

Episode 438

Forget Labor Day. We're taking the holiday to discuss the Green Bay Packers, now that they've set their initial 53-man roster and prepare to enter the season. The roster is broken down position by position with particular mention of Matt Flynn being named the team's backup quarterback, as announced by head coach Mike McCarthy on Sunday...

Enjoy.

The fact that Flynn is the choice does not surprise me in the least. MM loves to have people who know the system. He kept Kuhn because he doesn't have to coach a newbie.

He wanted Pickett back and Jolly back for the same reason.

All the practice squad guys were ours. That would not be so unusual except, some have been there more than once so why are they with us and not replaced with people who have abilities.

It all comes down to one coach keeping players and not looking for play makers.

My gutt says this year Ted and Mike get bit in the arse for keeping too many what if players and not going free agency other than an old Peppers.

Flynn has proven he can win and score in the Packers offense. I would say that has a lot to do w/ the decision to have Flynn as the #2 QB. Passing stats are great, but you put the players on the field that give you the best chance to win. And right now that's Flynn.

Apparently some people don't get the salary cap and the money it takes to sign high priced free agents. Guess they should do a little research to find out why the Packers are one of the best sports franchises around.

I agree that many people do not, but we really need a DL. I would love to trade for a DL veteran (or get one in FA if we can find one). That would also give us help this year and would offer long-term protection in case we lose Raji. It just makes sense.

I have no idea why some people here are so high on flynn.
he got lucky last year and had a lot of help. he is not a player in my eyse.
bad move to keep him in the mix, tolzien is so much moore a qb and gives you a way better chance to win.

fastmoving, I think everyone was shaking their heads over this move with Flynn. It was reported two days ago by me that it was my opinion that Flynn was "urged" or "campaigned" to be kept on by none other than Aaron Rodgers mainly to keep him company/hang out/ etc during the season. That was my theory and it appears (unless someone provides me with concrete evidence to dispute this) to be the no. 1 reason now as to why he was kept. Intel moved down to no. 2.

I guess the one positive of looking at this is Rodgers must feel pretty confident in that o-line and himself being healthy this season. He would not have done that and risked putting Flynn at no. 2 if he didn't feel confident that Flynn would never see any important snaps.

Perhaps he also sees Tolzien as a mild threat as he quickly progresses up the qb ladder speeding past Flynn at warp speed. Before anyone laughs, I think Clay Matthews was a little cocky too saying Jarone Elliott might steal his starting spot. He made a joke about that but I didn't like that. It was his way of saying he's never going to beat him out as though it was an absolute impossiblity. I think he also deep down sees Jayrone as a possible threat. Great players know another great player when they see one. I think Rodgers and Matthews know their competition quite well by their words and actions as of late.

Please... You were WRONG, admit it. Isn't that what you think I never do? But instead you come up w/ some cock and bull theory that Rodgers buddy system had everything to do w/ it. Get Real!!

Answer this then... If Thompson was so concerned about what Rodgers wanted why didn't he go and make sure he got Randy Moss when Favre wanted him soo badly?

Do you think Thompson has a different set of rules regarding Rodgers than he did Favre?

Flynn scored more points in the preseason than Tolzien and last year he put points and Wins in the Packers pocket.

flynn basically had one great game.........an thats about it. he makes a living out these 6tds and he will never do someting noticeably ever again.
its a fairy tail that he saved the season last year. We got lucky and flynn got lucky even more.
tolzien on the other hand is a qb with a future. A bright one if he gets half of flynns luck. and if you cant see this you pretty blind.
No idea what you meant with "more points in the pre".....thats a joke right?

go pack go from germany
