QB Aaron Rodgers "Right on Track" in His Recovery

How's the rehab going for Aaron Rodgers? All you have to do is watch the Green Bay Packers quarterback chuck 54-yard passes during pre-game warm-ups Sunday night at Heinz Field.

While it's a stunning, seemingly foreign sight, does that mean he'll be able to return to practice sometime soon?

"We'll see," said coach Mike McCarthy.

"There's a protocol, targets they're trying to hit each and every week. It's segmented. No. 1 priority is to get him healthy, so practice is not something we're really focused on right now."

Rodgers is approaching his sixth week of being on injured reserve, making him eligible to practice with the team, not Friday, but on Saturday. Him getting loose and throwing passes 35 yards consistently down the field prior to the Packers' meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday surely is a step in the right direction.

According to Dr. David Chao, MD, Rodgers isn't ahead, nor behind schedule -- he's right on track.

He was expected to be throwing by Thanksgiving, and after simulating throws with a towel just two weeks ago and working through conditioning exercises on the side of one of the Packers' practices, he's clearly taken the next step en route to recovery.

According to Chao, there's no chance that his clavicle will be 100 percent until six months post-surgery at the least. It is, however, common to return 6-8 weeks if the bone is at least 78 percent healed. Rodgers had two plates and 13 screws added into his shoulder, hinting that the Packers are more than likely preparing for his return.

"Everything that they're doing is calculated between the training room, the strength and conditioning room and [Aaron] Rodgers," McCarthy said. "As you would imagine, he's going at it 120 miles an hour. So far, so good."

The Packers have two games coming up in which they'll need to undoubtedly win in order for Rodgers to even consider returning.

They'll welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Lambeau Field this coming Sunday (1-14 in the state of Wisconsin since 1990) and then travel to Cleveland to face the currently winless Browns. After those slate of games, the Packers will be in Carolina to meet the Panthers on Dec. 17 -- Rodgers' target return date.

If the Packers aren't at least 7-6 by mid-December, a return is out of the question for Rodgers. Of course, the first priority is to just get him practicing with the team and evidently, there's still a ways to go.

"There's a plan laid out for Aaron, just like the other guys on I.R. He's knocking it out of the park ... We'll see what the end of the week brings."

Good !! Saw that Sunday night. But this won't stop TT from drafting another QB. The packers select in round 1 a QB!

A QB in round one !

How many fingers am I holding up, Do I hear three - well that's actually my foot, so you're on good drugs.

It might be a WR in round one. It might be an OLB or CB. Even a TE is possible, but a QB, no.

I just hope Dr. Mackenzie doesn’t force Aaron to play before he’s ready.

Not on Drugs. But I'll explain better. The reason I'm saying a QB . The top college QBs will drop this year. Much Like when TT took A-Rod. I remember the Starr years. Scott Hunter, Jerry Tagge. John Hadl , Lynn Dickey, Majak. etc. Starr got hurt all the time. The great defense left. The offense left. Starr retired. (He was my favorite packer. ) I'm saying hundley is not the answer. He's not A-rod, and he's not Favre. He's a back up. Period. I'm saying that A-Rod, is like Starr, and injury problematic now. That TT cannot pay him, when the next injury may ruin his career. Are hopes will always be with A-Rod until they get rid of Capers. But this is the draft I would take a QB first / or DL(Clark) if possible. Not Wr. And No Pass rusher will be there. They just are not going to get a megatron where they pick. The Wr will be taken second. And my choice is to go with TE and Wr again. So QB ! Will be the BPA.

I am willing to consider taking a QB with our first round pick. I'd have to love that player. I would strongly consider taking a QB in the 2nd round. There might be a couple in the forties.

I suggest do whatever you can to draft Rosen. Has the skill set, size, eyes, and brains running a pro style offense. Learning from Rodgers as Rodgers did with Favre and we'll have another HOF hopeful I feel. Your thoughts Packer nation?

This is a real shame. Just when BH is hitting his stride and we were going to see if he would be the next HOF qb in GB, he will be sidelined. Packers have no luck this year.

Either way, there is no way I would put AR in a game this year. It would be totally foolish to risk getting him reinjured even if they by some miracle make the playoffs just to once again watch that defense let them down miserably.

If we "run the table" we will be at 10 wins which would probably get us a wild card spot. Why would you not want Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback against Carolina, Minnesota, and Detroit and then with A-Rod as your QB in the playoffs we could make the bowl. I don't think that's being a homer, if he can play he can play and we could win it all.

I totally agree. Let him heal 1000%. Foolish to put him in or even think it. Our record and play has shown a very slim chance at the playoffs. As you said, defense will fold with Capers. The other positive thing is that this really is exposing MM and DC. MM and DC would have been gone five years ago if not for Rodgers carrying those two.

By this logic, he should not have played past in November in any of the last 3-4 years, after the offseason hopes of defensive improvement have faded.

Heck, why play him at all? If the defense ever does get good, they'll keep the Packers in contention until it becomes clear they have improved. Just encase him in glass and mark "Break in event defense gets really good".

And, in that case, there will be no Aaron in Green Bay, at least not Aaron Rodgers. He will follow Mike McCarthy...

He will not stay to see who is new HC and what he can expect from that HC. He has not in front of him 10 - 15 years of playing football.

I told you this today, and I will tell you if that happened (entire new coaching staff): "I told you....!"

"He will not stay to see who is new HC and what he can expect from that HC."

It's really not his choice to make. Aaron Rodgers, unless he is traded or retires, has two more seasons in GB. If there's a change in coaching staff, I can't believe that his input won't be important in determining who the new coach will be. You can't tell me that Favre didn't have at least a little input in the hiring of MM, who he knew as a past QB coach. I agree: he might not want to learn a new coach or a new system, but it helped rejuvenate #4 to some degree. It's a new challenge which would be good for him...and any new coach would be a fool not to lean on him and his on-field smarts.

I can't think of a reasonable explanation for why any GM would cut a player of #12's magnitude and allow him to walk away to any other team without getting some compensation. Who is really going to be able to give the Packers what he's worth in trade? It would be at least two years before he could follow MM, and he would likely take an extension before that. If he was that unhappy and demanded out of GB, as a GM, I would force his hand and make him choose to sit or retire....sounds familiar, doesn't it?

I'm not so sure about this:

"If the Packers aren't at least 7-6 by mid-December, a return is out of the question for Rodgers."

Let's say they are 6-8 when Rodgers get clearance to play from notoriously cautious Dr. McKenzie. And word inevitably gets around the locker room. How does the team meeting go where they tell the other 52 guys that Rodgers is too important to risk but they should get ready to suit up?

"And word inevitably gets around the locker room....Rodgers is too important to risk but they should get ready to suit up?"

This is the $1M question, isn't it? Teams shut down players who could continue to play all the time. In those cases, it's typically a case of "player X at 75% isn't going to get you as much as backup player Y, and further injury complications are an issue."

The fact that he's on IR and hasn't had his collarbone assessed yet for extent of healing covers the team to a certain degree. Last time he blew his collarbone, it seemed like we were hearing about new x-rays and his healing progress every week. I think that protects the team to a certain degree.

If I'm Rodgers, though, I know I'm the heart and soul of this team. This team needs him to be the leader. If he's cleared to practice, which could happen soon, he needs to practice. The IR designation protects the team if it chooses not to activate him. But if I'm #12, as soon as I'm cleared to play, I lobby hard with the staff (but not in the media) to play.

"If I'm Rodgers, though, I know I'm the heart and soul of this team. This team needs him to be the leader."

This is undeniably true and everyone inside and outside that locker room knows is. Which makes that conversation about shutting him down IF cleared all the more difficult.

"Hey guys, your leader is ready and able to play. But he's not going to play. Now go get 'em!"

I can't even being to speculate how I might react. I've never been on a NFL team and simply don't have the base of understanding. Obviously the smart play from the outside is to not risk it. But it might have negative ramifications from the inside that those of us on the outside can't begin to understand.

2 reasons why you aren't hearing stories about the healing progress, and why he hasn't had x-rays:
1.) he can't come off IR for two more weeks anyway, so there's no point in checking physical progress of healing
2.) Apparently for every X-Ray or MRI, it has an effect on the bone healing process, to some degree. I read this in a statement from Rodgers himself.

There won't be any X-rays or reports on healing until he's eligible to return.
I still seriously doubt he's coming back this year. His appearances with the throwing and all, are all related to inspiration for the team, the fans, and the league. It's more PR than anything else.

Rodgers needs to be able to take a hit before he can return. He may be able to throw fine but taking a hit is another matter. The medical staff will need to make the call on that one.

My vote is too let Rodgers stay out until next season. even if we are 7-6 in two weeks our playoff chances are slim. We need numerous scenarios and games to break our way even if we get to 10-6.

Atlanta and N.O. have the tie breakers versus the Packers. Seattle could fall to 10-6 but the NFC South could send three teams to the playoffs and knock us out. Carolina at 8-3 needs to lose 2 games and we will still need to beat them on their home field to knock them out.

If we play as we did against the Steelers we should take the next two games so 7-6 looks very possible. After that we should have a better idea about our playoff chances. Thanks, Since '61

"bring some player's up from practice squad. "

It's not MLB and this isn't September. Unless other teams are sniffing around those players and there's a need to protect them, most of them are there for a reason. There are plenty of players who need to be seriously assessed on the 53.

"get burnett and adams contracts done..my gosh...pathetically slow minded upper management"

Many players instruct their agents not to engage in contract talks during the regular season. I don't know if that's the case here, but it takes two to tango.

They won't offer all-pro money! 4. A-Rod should be shut down until this offensive line gets straighten out. The Packer shuffle continues under TT and MM.

Has Dr. David Chao (the internet Doc) ever even met AR? (much less examined him after the injury or even seen any of the test results, MRIs etc.)

54 yard passes according to a WBAY sports writer but yet the twitter feed shows AR throwing one casual pregame pass.

Count me as skeptical. -- I'll wait for the "real" diagnosis and upcoming conclusions. -- AR is a smart man. He won't play unless he absolutely can without the chance of easily re-injuring himself. (Ask Tony Romo what he'd do if he could do it again)

The Ravens officially ended the season. A patched up Capers D won't stand a chance if the Pack made the playoffs. Even a 100% Capers D wouldn't work, this defensive scheme is broken. Rodgers at 78%, why risk it.Like the Falcons playoff game, we would have to score 45+ points to win.

The season ended when McCarthy went for a 57 yard field goal and gave the momentum back to the Steelers. I will remember that longer then Rodgers injury thinking back on the 2017 season.

For the sake of argument, let's assume GB wins their next two and are 7-6. Rodgers is activated from IR but Hundley starts against Carolina. Rodgers is available but not starting due to excess caution.

At halftime, Hundley has GB ahead OR down by a touchdown or less. Does MM pull Hundley for Rodgers beginning the second half?

I'm torn because a lot has to happen for GB to get in as a wild-card. At the same time, if some of the combinations which have to happen in order for GB to become the second wild-card team actually appear to be happening, I don't want GB to squander another chance at a SB with Rodgers as QB.

I also remember a St Louis Cardinals' QB Charley Johnson. He was a good QB in the 1960s. He suffered a broken collarbone and returned too soon. The hurried return ruined his career as a QB. Granted, the treatment then wasn't the same as medical treatment now. But if AR comes back at 78%...is it worth it?

With All Due Respect guys. I'm just as Big of a GB fan here as the Packer fans on this post. I didn't say everyone on this post, because we all know, Not everyone here is a GB Fan. You need to be Realistic & Careful here. Be Honest!! You all jumped off on Chicago, jumped back on Baltimore, jumped off on Pittsburg, & now you're hoping beyond hope that AR can come back & lead us to the Promised land. Nothing I'd like more. It's a lot of money for me if he does, but Realistically, it's Not going to happen. I thought I had a Pretty Good Bet at GB 35-1 for the NFC. They are now 66-1, & 125-1 for the SB. If AR could play, & we could get in contention, I wouldn't want to risk his health for No Amount of money. I personally don't want to see AR in uniform till next year.

Yeah, I want TT, DC, & Murphy gone next year. I'm not so sure about McCarthy. A Qb & a New Head Coach usually don't go together Very Well. I would hope AR would have the say so on that?

Thinking of Head Coach's, I haven't heard any names mentioned to take McCarthy's place if it comes to that? I'll throw a name out there. Where is Jeff Fisher? I always thought he was a Pretty Good Head Coach. He's not with the Rams yet, is he??

He got fired from the Rams last year after going 4-9. The Rams are 8-3 now.

I know he got fired from the Rams. He did not have a Good 4yr's there. He put his cards in Bradford. I didn't follow what they did to turn things around. Maybe, & I say maybe some of the Credit goes to him. With what he had to work with in his time at Tenn, even with the 4 seasons with the Rams, his Record is not the worst. Without the 4 losing seasons at the Rams, it's actually Pretty Good. I think the guy is a Good Coach. If I'm not mistaken when he took over the Rams, they weren't SB Contenders.

I wasn't advocating him for the job, just wondered what happened to him. I always thought he was a Tough No Nonsense type of guy, who never had a Qb to make it go, Unless you think Vince Young was great. When he got Bradford at the Rams, he couldn't use him. Gruden's not coming out of the booth, Cower's not giving up his job. You can laugh, but I haven't heard you mention anyone. I really don't want to change Head Coah's on AR.

I’ve always thought this, but as others have posted starting over with new HC, replacing one who takes a huge part in planning the offense just might not make sense. Capers should’ve been gone after the SF Playoff nightmare though.

Doing great Tom, gettin ready to retire, how are you? I'm talking John Gruden. He loves Rodgers and knows this team has a shot with the right pieces in place.

Hey 4thand1, Doing Pretty Good. Still look 50, but the Mind is now 70. You'll Love Retirement. Gruden is the name that comes to mind 1st. He's got a Good Job there. It wouldn't surprise me if he is making a lot more than GB would pay. Although I did see today that ESPN is going to Lay Off 150 people. I wouldn't think he'd be one of them, but they must be having Financial Problems.

He be a Good Fit in GB if he and AR can work together. I could be wrong, but I think AR is going to feel the same way Favre did, when the 1st thing TT did was Draft his Replacement. He didn't like it. If GB has plans to Draft a Qb 1st round, that's usually the guy the New Coach wants. That might not go over so well. I'd be happy with Gruden. I think all GB fans would be. I still don't get "Chucky" Nice hearing from you again!!

The “Chucky” refers to Gruden’s resemblance to that silly doll in those goofy horror movies.
