Q&A With New Packers Offensive Lineman Derek Sherrod

New Packers first-round draft choice Derek Sherrod says he thinks left tackle will be the best spot for him in the NFL.

Here's the transcript from the press conference with new Green Bay Packers first-round draft choice Derek Sherrod from the NFL Combine back in February:

On his best weight...

"I feel like I can move pretty good at any weight."

On where he fits in with the rest of the tackles in this year's draft class...

"Personally I feel like I fit in at the top. We have a pretty good offensive tackle class this year and I came here to compete with everybody that's here. I plan on coming out on top."

On what he views as his strengths...

"I'm very much a very physical, competitive, intelligent offensive tackle that can come in right away and help out whatever organization that I'm with. I plan on going in right away and help out as much as possible."

On what it was like in the Florida game when they ran the ball down their throat...

"It was a very exciting time for us. We all came together as one unit and we knew that if we were going to win, we needed to execute on every phase of the game and that included running the ball. We call just came together, all 11 guys."

On his intelligence...

"It helps me a lot because as an offensive lineman you have to be in sync with your other four offensive linemen, then you have to go and read your opponent very well on the defensive side and know them thoroughly. As an offensive lineman you have to be on the same page. If you know something, your fellow offensive linemen have to know it also."

On whether his intelligence will help him transition to the NFL...

"Oh, yeah. Football is mostly mental most of the time. If you do your homework and study and know the ins and outs of the game, you're going to be well prepared."

On whether he has his degree...

"Yes. Business administration."

On whether being a little shorter than the other tackles helps him with leverage...

"I feel like it does. Even though I'm tall, I have a very large wingspan. Maybe because I'm a little bit shorter I can get up under a defender a little bit better."

On whether he prefers playing left tackle...

"Oh, yeah. I can play either side of the ball, but I love playing left tackle and I feel that's the best spot for me."

On whether he can play right away...

"I am very NFL-ready at left tackle. That's the position I plan on going in and playing at."

On how the SEC prepared him for the NFL...

"It prepared me very well. The SEC is among the best when it comes to athletes and the speed and the physical aspects of the game. You can go in and look at any SEC game and it'll be very physical and you just compete with each other. It's going to be very hard fought. That's the epitome of the league. It's a tough, physical game and I was right there with it."

On which SEC defensive lines impressed him the most...

"LSU had a pretty physical defensive line. They always bring very tough linemen. They run hard football. They play physical football. They are fundamentally sound."

On whether the NFL's labor situation weighs on his mind...

"It's in the back of my mind a little bit, but I don't think about it too much. I'm just concentrating on one thing at a time. Right now it's the combine. Then it'll be my Pro Day, then it'll be the draft. I'm very confident I'll get handled. They're working on it. I just have every bit of confidence that it'll get handled."

On Gabe Carimi's opinion that he's the best tackle in the draft...

"He's a very good offensive tackle. If that's his opinion, that's his opinion. I feel otherwise, and that's my opinion."

On the importance of getting his degree...

"It was very important. I take pride in everything I do, especially when it comes to academics. That's how I was able to get my Bachelor's at such an early time."

Very excited to see that Mr. Sherrod and Mr. Carimi will be blessed with the opportunity to further explore and debate this point twice a year for the next decade. I'm sure Carimi would take offense to Sherrod's comment, because quite frankly, Carimi is a class A douche bag

Confidence can often be mistaken for arrogance. I don't see him being arrogant, just confident in his ability....plus I like O-linemen with an F-U attitude.

IMHO that is condidence.
Arrogance was what Carimi showed in his interview. Plus appearing shirtless in his draft promo. Nothing says douchebag like appearing shirtless and showing the muscles.

Plus, this is from the combine, where you're supposed to just talk about what you do well and how good you are.
