2. Gary gets Douglass' money.
3. Buffalo will be in the playoffs.
Trading a late 3rd is chicken Feed.

I have to agree. The Packers lost a physical corner who has played every defensive snap so far this season. And we included our fifth rounder. I think we could have squeezed the Bills for a better deal given how needy they are at the position and the Bears not budging on Johnson.

The signing of Gary should have waited.

It’s a sign that they realize that this regime has hit the wall. They are willing to trade a leader because he’s not changing anything this year and the system will be different next year. A sign that perhaps change is coming.

Who do you see as "they" CW? Murphy and Gute?

There's a season to play out, but I don't see any changes in President or GM before Murphy retires. Don't you think Gute or Ball will ascend to the throne?

I'll miss Rasul. Good man. Good player.

Obviously the FO knows this team is going nowhere this year. Douglas was their only tradeable commodity. I think Preston would have been traded as well if there were any takers. That being said, I think your fervent desire to see this coaching blown up isn't going to happen.

It's a great move, if we're trying to get the #1 pick next year. I really don't get it, they got a 3 and gave up a 5 in exchange for an above average CB, which every team could use. Is there a big salary cap savings involved? Otherwise, it makes no sense. Our last good 3rd round pick was Morgan Burnett 13 years ago.

Carrington can play 10 yards off the WR just as well as Douglass for a lot less. Remember Barry's defense makes every player crap so why pay a premium for soft, soft, soft coverage.

Probably couldn't find a taker for Jaire's contract.

this 10yds off the ball and backpedaling upon the snap is ludicrous. The trade is
yet another Micah Hyde mistake. GB hasn't shown to be a better than avg drafting group despite Gutey's longtime experience doing so; GB gave away a strong player (don't care they got him for nothing-AZ practice squad) and won't be able to replace him for months truth be told. Further, this draft/develop business isn't really working, right??! Stokes nada, Savage nada (both 1st rnd busts to date essentially)

I'd say the only current player that's proven out of the dozens selected has been R. Gary & J. Alexander (whose stock is dropping rapidly) but it did take them a couple years. When you draft players in the first/second they should reasonably be expected to play their rookie year. Gary has come back strong from his ACL and hopefully still on the rise, so i agree with MLF, "he earned it".

The Bears dump a two pick for Montez Sweat; the guy he should have drafted along with Burns. Classic FU being the Guteworst. Lay money Gary goes the way of Perry and the IR list. Best keep P. Smith through 2025. Douglas must have called out the Silage committee. He was the only guy showing leadership via criticism of "The Plan." This Muther is a disaster which keeps on giving. Has Rhyan seen the field. Number 3...Number 3 ?? Full Tank Ahead ! Welcome to the 70's Show.

jb, what will the two pick be for the Commanders? I'm guessing the Commanders are doing backflips having dumped a guy who's headed for free agency and getting a top, what, 35ish pick in return? Stoopid Bears.

Things are bad in Green Bay, but the Bears? This move is Claypool-like and they're still a rudderless clusterf*ck.

look, i can understand that the bears would want to throw away their draft picks, how many times have they traded up in the first round to take quarterbacks that don't pan out. they were beside themselves with joy for an undrafted free agent qb who apparently could take a snap and chew gum at the same time (until he got exposed last night as the next in a line of frauds at QB.)

So sure, they gave up a #2 pick that will probably settle in at number 33 or 34 at the end of the season, and then they can dump huge money trying to sign the guy they just traded for, who also could opt out when his contract expires. sounds like the kind of business you expect from Chicago.

green bay trades a guy we signed off a practice squad to a contender for a #3 pick. correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that means well have 5 picks in the first 100. a HUGE step toward cap health.

Sigh. I've been a BG supporter... But this i don't get. Stokes wasn't playing well BEFORE injury last year, and is reinjured now. Rasul is our best leader and corner. And our other starter had a bad back ...

So when he goes down, rolling out Valentine....and????

He DOES know he needs to field a team for the rest of the season, right?

This whole crew has to go - coaches, GM.... Everyone.

They like Valentine. Let him play. They also believe Nixon can play on the perimeter, too.

So if they cut Douglas in the off-season to clear some cap in a pinched 2024 and got nothing for him just for the sake of maybe 7-10 vs. 5-12?

Valentine and Stokes are outside players. I’m not sure I see Nixon fitting there, but Ballentine does. Rasul fits the Barry scheme soft coverage better than any though. Maybe a sign that won’t matter.

A third round pick is a pretty decent price I suppose. I will miss him, they will miss his leadership, but he wasn’t moving the needle enough unless they still had faith in LaFleur/Barry to turn it around.

If we are going to play Valentine and Stokes though, please God play them in tight coverage. We just traded the one guy who suited off coverage in the roster. Perchance that is coincidence or a message to Barry, who knows. He’d better grasp it though.

Dobber, it's an eval year. This move goes to show how BADLY they miscalculated the whole roster - the defense and OL specifically.

How are they can going to eval Love if they are down 30-3 by halftime every game??

What a mess.

If anything, perhaps this shows they know he's not the answer and are angling for a top QB. One can hope....

Yes, I'd agree GB miscalculated, esp thinking they were set @ Oline with both their all-pros. Steinovich is a fine Oline coach. They've drafted Olinemen the last 3 drafts i believe or more. Ever since Hackett left for Denver, GB O has been dwindling (even with a broken thumb). Now with Love trying to step up, we spoiled fans are expecting quality QB play. It also goes to show you (IMHO) mlf has to really work hard with a young QB (albeit his 4th year, 3 w/clipboard) that can't see the field anywhere close to what Mr. Rodgers could and make all the throws it took AR several seasons to perfect.
Anyone notice MLF jargon has evolved from: i got to do a better job, gotta look @ the film,
to: well, we'll see how resilent they are, we
need more consistentcy..but still film watching (which anyone would say!)

Overall folks, i think a major issue is MLF not knowing what Love's strengths are and setting up a game plan that he could succeed in; two, Love clearly doesn't have all the throws and can't see the field very well. Third, Love has had MLF as HC for 3 seasons and Tom Clemons for his second straight season now. That's darn good coaching one would think.
Conclusion: Gutey, you picked the wrong guy. It pissed off AR to the point he went out and scored 2 MVPs back to back, but MLF made a horrible choice @ ST coach in what's his name and it caused him the NFC championship game vs SF. Plain and simple!

Never mind the draftees; most have no choice? But what in demand coaches would come to work for LaFleur if we don’t fire him? He’s a guy who would be very much on the hot seat. No, desperation candidates only would join a guy unlikely to survive. The idea that we can keep him and rebuild a talented staff (even if he could manage them) Is equally, if not more, unrealistic.

I'm guessing its the money....In fact I'm pretty sure it's the money.

We all know that Rizzi turned us down after being offered a cheap contract because MM decided that it was better to be cheap than good....Saved us $1 million or maybe $2 million and cost us a chance at a deep playoff run.... Jim Leonard turned us down for "some unknown reason" and Joe Barry sure seems like his history would make him cheap.... it's the money.... MLF probably threatened to walk if they didnt pony up for a good ST coach.

Which would be the stupidest thing to do since it automatically degrades all our other investments (draft picks, cap space) going into the roster. I'm all for not breaking the bank but imagine thinking that coaches arent worth the investment when the name of the trophy is Lombardi....

People need to make up their minds. Most of the people bitching about dealing him away are the same ones saying this is a dead-from-the-neck-up team and they should unload all vets for picks. Montez Sweat brought a 2nd (and it will be a high second)--that's about the highest compensation for a player I've seen today, and that's for a young ascending player at a premium position. Chase Young only brought a 3rd.

Douglas is a good player, but not a great one. He's almost 30. He probably wasn't a long-term Packer. This isn't a bad deal.

A great story. Gute finds him in the trash heap, he earns a decent contract. Life changing in fact. At 28, with the team a mess he gets the chance to play for a contender. If he eventually can transition to S eventually, he could still have a long career. He’s smart enough.

The one thing he proved less adept at than I expected was playing the nickel. We have a lot of outside guys they like longer term. If we were still thinking we were playing for something this wouldn’t happen, but it seems that illusion has burst even in Lambeau. That’s a vital precursor to stopping the nonsense LaFleur is serving up.

I don't know if people are upset that they traded Douglas; I think it's more about the details surrounding the trade. Yes, Douglas was plucked off a practice squad. However, he hasn't played like a practice squad player since he's been a Packer.

Bitternotsour, your argument is that they didn't dump Jaire for a third rounder. Correct, but the fact is Douglas has been playing better than Jaire AND, unlike Jaire, has been available to play every game and every snap. Then, to trade him AND a fifth rounder for a third round pick, which by and large has been a disastrous round for Gute picks, might be seen by some as the Packers giving up too much for too little return.

I guess we'll find out if this trade benefits future Packer teams.

Also, the draft is a crap shoot, recent draftees not withstanding. You hit, you miss. Are you advocating that we should have accepted a 4th round pick because we've had better luck in the 4th? This is the deal. We get salary off the books for a player that wasn't going to be the difference between getting in the playoffs or not getting in the playoffs (for us). Rasul wasn't all that effective as a slot corner, and we weren't ready to turn him into a safety (if that was even an option).

He's a great fit at Buffalo, he's a cold weather player, and they need help in the secondary. He might even pick up some playoff jing. Good on Rasul - I'll be pulling for him.

This is a win for all.

Even the articles on the site are AI, hence that phony picture of the douchey-looking Andy Herman. I mean, if that isn't a phony identity, I don't know what is. Sorry to red pill you.

Nope! It doesn't matter where/how/when GB acquired Rasul, it was a great move for him and the GB Packers. He was a superstar for them in '21, won't be forgotten and has proved himself to be "consistent" since then.
I agree with Nags, it's a cap hit move more likely, but what do you want to bet, GB won't be able to match Douglas's contributions for months & months. Productive CB's have proven hard to come by and most of us don't trust GB ability to pick a contributing one (STokes, Savage, etc.)

I'm officially, and very loudly, reversing my position on Gutey. Recently I have said that he's not our biggest problem. Losing a fifth round pick AND #29 in exchange for a third round pick, which Gutey has NEVER done well with, only makes sense if he's blowing the team the kiss of death on his way out the door.

Alternatively, if he was "blowing it up," getting rid of every veteran player we've got because the kids aren't learning from them anyway? I'd hate that too, but at least one could make the case that it's a strategy.

This just shows that insane asylums should never have been shut down, and he should be committed for life. Fire him immediately. Fire him yesterday.

I don't understand the downvotes, Pantz- you are 100% correct.

The cap issues we're facing today are the results of moves made up to 5 years ago in order to keep aging vets around a QB who demanded them.

Playing void year games and back loading contracts to keep the 'buddy crew' around Rodgers. We saw it then and called it out as it was happening.

This isn't a surprise. It's the band aid being ripped off.

Deadline trades aren’t that common. They got a decent price got him. I don’t like losing him but, I’m the long term, he wasn’t lifting this team to a CB point where it matters. We suck and it’s not getting fixed overnight. Douglass had more value now than he will in 2025. Just the realities of life with a young roster and coaching questions galore. They may have been open to other offers too but didn’t get any or not ones they considered hood enough.

Im not bent out of shape about this. It’s just a consequence of bring a visible mess with no apparent answers this far in. The positive side is that at least someone in Lambeau in authority is willing to face how bad we are, which means some feel the need for change. That seems like it should be a given, but I don’t think it was.

No one requires you to substantiate a rumor on this site. Just say the rumor with confidence.

Like this: I was chatting with Rob Demovski, and he tells me that Rasul was really letting the defensive staff have it since week two. The dam finally burst when he pushed his way into MLF's office without an appointment and Matt was having his eyebrows waxed.

Matt went right to Mark Murphy, and Mark told Gutekunst he had to cut Rasul loose.

I expect to see Rasul excel in Buffalo similar to the Micah Hyde fiasco. I dont disagree with being sellers now and stocking up on draft picks. But not sure if a late 3rd pick is enough for a talented player like Rasul. One of our few guys who seemed to play with some intensity. What I dont want is this FO in charge of rebuilding this team. We need really good talent evaluators that will draft good football players not project athletes. I don't trust Gutenkunst or his scouting staff to make the right picks. They need to be replaced. They have demonstrated bad drafting for 4 or 5 years now.

Rasul was an ascending player who knew his job and worked at it. His attitude toward the game assured his progress. Sure, it was hard to see him go, but we got a 3d for him. At the end of this year he would have left and we would have been empty handed. Good luck, Rasul. Enjoyed your play while you were here.

My God, we're a few games into a bad start that may well turn into a lost season and the hounds are baying for the blood of anyone in management. Whining sycophants who see themselves as the spokesmen for what ought to be. You should have been around when we were hiring ex-players. Star was loved as a player and respected for his efforts as a coach, but after that it was downhill for a lot of years. Then there were ND rejects etc. The seasons of anguish felt endless....

Get a grip on your feelings and support your team. Management has enough anguish without outside contributions..Carry the G

Nobody on the other NFC north teams made anything worthwhile - underperformers for underperformers. I believe that the Packers got an underperformer because we always pick an underperformer in the 3rd round. All in all we have probably a discipline leadership problem on this team and if the reports are true - that Douglas was trying to be a team leader - then of course Lafleur was OK with getting rid of him. What else is new. PS Dobbs lost his job in AZ, Sweat wasnt sweating it much in Washington and Pjones - only 8 catches this year.

Jaire, Stokes, and Savage all regressed. He forced Coach Gray out of town.
Sul was the emotional leader of the defense. Now he is gone.

he did not accept the offer, but I"m still shaking my head, why would a college HC necessarily be a good DC @ the NFL level having never coached in the NFL? Then, it became clearer: oh, one of his friends with about a 33% success rate as a defensive coach in the NFL and MLF picked him ( Joe Barry). For the love of all 12 Disciples, plus Mary & Joseph!

Horrible trade.... This team has reeked of having a dysfunctional corporate mind set towards the football side of things for years now and the way they jettison guys that actually show leadership and results just reinforces that view for me. MM is a stone around the neck of the GBP football team. Leadership and chemistry dont have value in the corporate world because you can't put it on a spreadsheet...judging from the last few years those things dont have value in GB for the same reason. Management keeps getting rid of talent for cost saving potential especially if that talent tries to let the execs know what they are getting wrong(team members gotta stay in their lane in the business world). The results have been predictably underwhelming. Management then blames under performing team members but points to an increase in some number on a spread sheet as the reason to keep operating the same way....

Only thing I can figure is the bills came in looking, and the Packers decided a 3rd rounder will help them move up in the 1st (especially since the Rodgers pick fell through).

I could see the Packers deciding they'd want to move up into the first for a second dip to grab a LT or a CB to restock the shelves now that Stokes is basically completely out of the question.

Whatever he did to himself, he got IR'd after 4 special teams snaps after being sidelined for a year. Another leg injury for a guy who's game is speed. If he is ready to play next season, he will still be trying to find his way back into the groove, and will have lost a year and a half of game development opportunity to injury out of his first 3 seasons. This is leading into year 4, a year where the Packers will have to decide if they will pay big-time dollars to Stokes on a 5th year option extension.. in a year the packers are probably still trying to be shrewd with their cap dollars.

I would love for Stokes to work out in Green Bay, but it doesn't seem likely.

Honestly, i was expecting GB to possibly select an Olineman early this last April. Moreover, when Hackett left and Stenavich became OC things started to unravel for the offense. QB coach Getsy also left as QB coach/passing coord. Mr. Rodgers sustained a broken thumb last year and it affected GB not getting to the playoffs! Enter a new QB who can't see the field very well and still has trouble throwing all the types of NFL level throws.

No one could anticipate GB's two all pro Olinemen to go down early this year, but come on, they knew Bachitari's health was very fragile. That's on Gutey as there's no way Steno & staff plus the sawbones didn't inform both Gutey & MLF. Meyers has been going continually downhill as Mr. Tom is their only consistent Olinemen these days.

It was to be a rebuild year, so there shouldn't be many surprises. Don't get all the anger and frustration. Over recent years the Packers front office tried threading the needle by shooting for the SB all while drafting for the future. It didn't work and the Packers are in a tough spot right now. My opinion...more needs to be done for the rebuild. We will see some big name veterans shuttled this upcoming off-season. 2024 will be about getting back to respectability, while 2025 the Packers should be neck deep in the playoffs if they fully commit to rebuilding now.

The whole "We are gonna go all in for the SB AND rebuild for the future" was the stupidest thing I ever heard...corporate minded buzz word, PR stunt meant to appease the fans and nothing else. In the dictionary they use that statement as an example of what an oxymoron it... In the NFL you can try for the SB/deep playoff run OR you can be doing a rebuild/reload. The Packers FO came out and said we are gonna do both and then wondered why nobody else in the NFL ever thought of just winning the SB and doing a rebuild at the same time...

An injury settlement with Bakhtiari and paying Douglas makes much more sense to me. Nothing against David, who has played well when available but we cannot count upon him to be healthy anymore. This leaves a big hole at CB/depth for this year and the immediate future.

Thanks Gute, now we will be drafting defense...AGAIN, instead of a premium OL. Genius....

Phantom,
While I admittedly was shocked the Packers drafted Van Ness vs an OL in round 1 this year, I would be doubly shocked and fall over if Gutey didn't take an OL in round 1 in 2024. If it isn't an OL it had better be a top tier DL who specializes stopping the run.

I hope so because we need a new LT / Center and RG. I hope our CAP room is pretty high cause we need those 3 minimum to start 2024. Plus possibly a different Safety and now starting CB. You could throw the #3 pick in the trash with as much as has been shown from that trade spot in GB in over a decade. I am still holding out hope in Kraft though. The Raiders are cleaning out their Coaching staff and GM as we speak. I'm good with drafting the LT in round 1, but the rest need filled from FA or Love will struggle again in 24'.

Going to miss Rasul!!!!

No more zone coverage. Douglas was one who actually played it well. The rest of the secondary has not been good at it. If Barry doesn't change against the Rams, fire him and let Williams audition the rest of the season as the DC.

Time for Smith, Alexander, Gary, and the proven NFL players on defense to be very angry and vocal in every practice and keep it up in the locker room. Taunt the hell out of the offense and dare them to play like they belong in the NFL. Anyone on offense who doesn't step up and do their job (block someone, block the right person, run the right route, catch the ball, throw good passes on time, no more drive killing penalties, etc) doesn't have the heart to belong in the NFL.
