Packers Won't Be Signing TE Owen Daniels

The former Wisconsin product signed with the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday.

Despite making a visit to Packers headquarters at the outset of the new league year, Owen Daniels will not be making a return visit after agreeing to terms with the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, according to Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network:

At the time of the visit, both Andrew Quarless and Jermichael Finley remained unsigned, but Quarless has since re-upped with the Packers. Finley, meanwhile, remains in a holding pattern until he gets clearance on his sugically-repaired spine.

As long as Finley remains unsigned, the Packers have a need for a large mobile target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The longer Finley remains on the market, the more it looks like that person could be rookie, whether it be a tight end or a wide receiver.

Daniels will be joining forces with Dennis Pitta at tight end in Baltimore as weapons for quarterback Joe Flacco.

I agree. Also, the premise that the Packers need a pass-catching tight end ala Finley assumes that MM is not going to evolve the offense. With what everyone is calling the deepest backfield of the MM era I think it makes sense to assume that the offense will be changing. The Packers could easily pick up a guy like Fiedorowicz with one of their two third round picks. The Packers have done well with Iowa products, and CJ is an old-school TE - big, blocks well, and can catch even if he does not have the elite 40 time to stretch the seam. He could work very well as a two-down starter with Bostic playing the other role on obvious passing downs. Going this route would also free up the Packers to go S and ILB in the first two rounds of the draft to shore up the middle of the defense. If the draft plays out this way I think the Packers will have taken a step in the right direction.

Personally I liked he idea of Owens but Thompson or McCarthy saw something they didn't like during his visit. Quarless and Boykin disappeared in the playoff game, 1 catch for 8 yards between them and yes I'm aware Boykin doesn't play TE. My concern is are the Packers giving Rodgers enough. You have the best QB on the planet and gone are Jennings, Finley, Jones, even Driver from 2010 or 11 when the Packers seemed to score every Red Zone visit. Last season even Rodgers struggled in the Red Zone when he was healthy. One injury to Cobb or Nelson and the Packers don't have that depth they've had. The running game should be better with Lacy and Franklin a year older, Harris coming back and Starks resigned. Bulaga is coming back and that should help the O-line but after missing 23 games can they REALLY count on him? Maybe they love this Harper kid or are continuing to really count on Bostick, but I'd still rather have someone that we know has been there and done it.

I have a good idea of where the dislikes came from. Lol...

I think this is a big year for Bostic to prove himself. His snap count should increase significantly. TE/Split out as WR and plays a lil bit of H-Back (a role DJ Williams was supposed to master).
