Packers vs. Chiefs - First Impressions

Interesting to hear Andy Malumba & Dezman Moses both getting their names called on the Packers' first drive.

Schum's first punt  pins the Chiefs on their own nine yard line - that's what they liked about Schum. In that regard, have you seen this video of Schum:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DweBEwRzSMQ

This testing Demarious Randall early with deep shots is becoming a popular trend among offensive coordinators...

No offensive line starters right off the bat made for a paucity of holes for the Packers running backs. Hard to evaluate them under those circumstances.

Starting another Packers conspiracy theory: Was Trevor Davis told to "acquire" an injury so he can be put on IR, solving the WR logjam issue?

Jake Ryan showing considerable rust coming back from a hamstring injury.

I had totally forgotten that Carl Bradford is still Practice Squad eligible. Good news for Joe Thomas, I think.

Marwin Evans allowing way too many completions in his area in first half. Same can be said for Robertson Daniel.

I like the attitude and energy Josh Hawkins brings. Small, but agressive and backs down from no one.

And a few minutes later, he picks off a pass...

Packers reserve OL have been downright awful all night long. Hasn't been a single hole for a running back to exploit.

I don't know if he makes this team, but Reggie Gilbert has some badass pass-rush moves. A very worthwhile development project.

ILBs failed to distinguish themselves. Bradford active, just not particularly good. Ryan looked bad/rusty. Barrington I didn't get a good take on.

Gunter got an INT, but looked bad. Let receivers cross his face often for easy slants. Hawkins up and down. Evans okay and down. Monty drops 2. Adams needs to come back for that pass. So so. Cook, Abby, look good. Alison okay but against 3rd string. OL - good grief. Maybe Walker will be back soon. Schum looked like an NFL punter.

I was not sure if he was waived with an injury settlement or put on IR. If the former, he can be re-signed in 8 weeks, IIRC.

The biggest thing that stood out to me is how well Datone Jones looks as a pass rusher. He keeps playing this well this defense will be a top 5 unit. He was consistently putting pressure on the passer throughout the entire preseason, against 1st, 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Trade, waivers, street, ex-Sumo wrestler: Ted's got to find another double team eating monster or it'll be ugly watching 1st team running backs average 4-5 yds per carry.

Guion, Pennel, Price. We good.

The run D has already looked much improved this preseason. Raji was a tarzan/jane NT as it pertains to run d, frequently getting blown off the ball. Now players who are better at it will getting snaps.

Finally, he may be rewarding their first round selection, but I wouldn't count on it.

Pretty ugly game, but I did see a few bright spots.
-Bradford looked really good I thought, and deserves to be on the 53.
-Brice continued to tackle well (hope he's not hurt too badly), and should make it over Evans.
-The new punter is a beast.
-At this point, I'd take Gilbert over Elliot.
-Fackrell is really coming into his own.
-Monty was getting some nice separation.

And now a few negatives.
-O-line looked like trash half the time.
-Both Burks and Ross underwhelmed. Blocking was an issue, but don't be surprised if Ted picks up a wavier wire guy.
-Secondary seemed like Swiss cheese at times.
-As did the D-line
-Abby does not look natural returning punts/ kicks to me. Just doesn't have the speed or lateral quickness to break one without excellent blocking.
-Seemed like a lot of drops, but that could just be me.

All that's left to say is here we come Jacksonville!

Abby played great and broke one punt 42 yards, fielding punts from a guy who can flip the field. Agree on the other points.

Not saying he didn't play well. I just don't think he's a long term solution at the position.

Abby was amongst best PR in collegue. That was one of his strong suits when Packers pick him up in the 5th round!

The first thing I thought of when Davis got injured was the same Al mentioned. What a convenient injury. It would sure solve the WR issue if he went on the IR.

O-line sucked with both run and pass blocking. Cut Taylor, eat the money and save a spot.

Punter looked good. Looks like he could put a hurting on someone if he ever had to make a tackle.

D gave too much up the middle on passes and runs. I know these are our scrubs but they were going against their scrubs too.

Biggest area of concern - the depth at d-line. Why do I feel Daniels will never get any rest this year. Need to do something there. Else - 19 & 0.

Not too many injuries, so all-in-all a good night.

Convenient for the Packers, maybe. But how would it be of any advantage at all to Trevor Davis? IMO, it's actually quite detrimental to the player's interests.

marpag, no one said it would be good for Davis. It would be helpful to the Packers to delay having to make a tough decision...

I'm not disagreeing with you from a team perspective, Al. But if we are going to indulge in a little "conspiracy theorizing," then it would seem that Davis needs to be in on the charade, and I see no reason why Davis would want to play along with that.

How about getting to play with the best QB in the league? Don't think that's important to a wide receiver?

It's important, just not important enough to make him throw away a prime year of his career when there is still a chance that he could be on the field somewhere. Players want to play, and Rodgers isn't the only QB in the game. And there is no guarantee at all that Davis will make the Packers roster next year either. Even if he does make the Packers roster, would he get more playing time if he were on a team that didn't have as many WRs as GB?

I'm putting myself in his position. I'm really not ready to be an NFL player. I need some serious time in the weight room. Do I take the chance I get cut and say, Cleveland picks me up, or do I sit, get paid, hit the weight room and return next year ( or possible this year on re-callable IR if there are injuries) to the best QB in the league. Playing with Rodgers is guaranteed to help me have a better career and thus make more money? I pick option 2.

Is it just me or have you noticed the snaps in the shotgun are floaters from the backup centers? The D Ends are generally 2 steps into the backfield by the time the ball gets to the QB.

Wow, what a night for Scrum, Shrum, or whatever it is. Hopefully I'm not calling him a bum by the middle of the season.

Cook is going to heat it up this year!

What does it mean when Joe Callahan is called "surprisingly elusive"? Does that mean he is fairly quick for being a bit spongy? His short to intermediate throws look good. He needs to work on the accuracy of his deep passes.

Davis to IR, Geronimo makes the team. (Is that really his name?)

Bring on the regular season! 12-4 this year - no doubt about it!

Was going to say the same thing about Barclay's snaps in the shotgun. If he ever has to fill in for Tretter he better clean that up or risk the stink-eye from ARod.

Gilbert looks like he has some potential. Nice speed. Put him on the PS.

Well that game last night was a little brutal.

The biggest disappointment was the OL. They gave absolutely no holes for the running game, and provided little pass protection.

Also losing Davis to a shoulder injury wasn't great either. That may solve the logjam at WR though if Davis goes on IR.
I thought it was interesting that they didn't play Allison until the 2nd half. It seems like to me that they are going to try and sneak him onto the PS.

A few positives from last night.
-Fackrell showed up. He looked good.
-Hawkins may have earned himself a roster spot
-Abbrederis may have won the Punt return job
-Schumm may have officially won the punting job. I'm not sure what kind of leg he has in terms of gross yards, but his hangtimes were impressive. And he can definitely pin teams deep.

Same guys ,same doubts. I expected better against KC. Abbey before Adams. Adams needs to go. Burks and that Offensive Line should have been better. The defensive line has to do a better job. Hopefully will see a better effort next game. If this game is any indication. Not one player could make the NFL all-rookie team. I don't think we have to worry about any guys being taken off are PS. I miss Kuhn.

The OL should have been better.
Burks really had no where to go every time he touched the ball. Even on the screen as soon as he caught it, the OL in front of him barely blocked anyone.

Just looking at the "Stats" for the game, the Packers don't have 3rd RB worth keeping behind Lacy and Starks. I get the O-Line didn't play well (Basing this on everyone's comments) but the few highlights I did see suggest nothing special, PS maybe but that's it.

Who other than me would like to see Thompson just once sign someone who...A.) We've heard of......B.) We don't have to wait a year or 2 to see if he pans out, he could perhaps contribute right away.

That's 4 over 12 years with Pickett and Wood coming in 2006 so really 2 in the last 10 worth talking about. Now Ted did trade for Ryan grant so kudos for that move. Just saying with the success he's had in the 3 mentioned before Cook, you'd think he'd dip more often.

Last night was Burks worst showing. At the same time, the OL was really bad last night. there was no holes to run through.

Plus they didn't pass block well either.

Adams had a couple good catches but he had difficulty getting separation against 3rd stringers. I hope he's not the 3rd WR. Last night ended the myth that the back half of our roster is so superior, they got their asses handed to them by KC's back half. Other than a few promising DB's, the rest are either poor (O-line) or JAGs.

While I wasn't paying attention to KC, they are known for playing their starters much deeper into preseason games than the packers. i wonder at what point they came out...

KC is supposed to have a very deep team. I expected their depth versus our depth to be a good battle, and it was. We played Pennel and Datone deep into the 2nd half, for example, and we played what was supposed to be our starting ILBs for a long time.
