Packers Updates From The Weekend

Here's a brief recap of the weekend activities related to the Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers had a busy weekend, both on and off the field, so here's a quick smorgasbord of topics from the past few days.

Family Night - The team held its annual Family Night event on Saturday.  This used to a be a full scrimmage with some players in green and others in white.  It's been a long-standing tradition that fans look forward to and pack Lambeau Field for each year.  For the past two seasons, however, the Packers have abandoned the scrimmage format and held more of a normal practice session.  Two years ago, offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga tore his ACL during the scrimmage and head coach Mike McCarthy changed the format the following season.  Still, the stadium was nearly packed with fans who eagerly await the 2015 season's start.  We've talked about Packers fans here before and how they're one of the widest fan bases in the NFL.  This is another example.  A photo of the Chicacgo Bears family night practice emerged with barely the lower level filled at Soldier Field.  The Packers have done a good job of keeping the event interesting and appealing enough to pack the stadium.

Former Packers general manager Ron Wolf - Wolf was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.  He was presented by his son and current Packers direct of player personnel.  Wolf was with the Packers as GM from 1991 - 2001.  He arrived to a team that was mediocre at best and that had little appeal to top-name free agents at the time.  The Packers had endured nearly two decades of running middle of the Pack, and sometimes worse.  Wolf brought in Mike Holmgren to be the team's head coach and soon after traded a first-round pick for Brett Favre.  The signing of Reggie White completed the recipe for attracting more top free agents and elevating the play of current veterans such as LeRoy Butler and Gilbert Brown.

Under Wolf's guidance, the Packers appeared in three straight NFC championship games and won one Super Bowl title.  Favre won three straight MVP awards during that span as well.  Wolf also received accolades for his work with the Oakland Raiders and Al Davis as well as the New York Jets.  It was a well-deserved honor for Wolf and came just weeks after Favre was inducted into the Packers hall of fame.  Favre will be eligible for the pro football hall in 2016.

Packers Depth Chart - An unofficial depth chart was released, with few surprises so far.  One that did stand out was linebacker Clay Matthews being listed at outside linebacker.  Matthews has spent most of his time on the inside thus far and has missed several practices with a knee injury.  Last week, Matthews said he expects to be available for the preseason opener against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.  Nate Palmer was listed as the other starting inside linebacker in the team's base 3-4 defense next to Sam Barrington.  It's almost certain that the team will have Matthews on the inside as well as run a fair share of their nickel package and so the listing of Matthews and Palmer bears little signficance at this point.

Casey Hayward was listed as the starting outside cornerback opposite Sam Shields.  First-round pick Damarious Randall is listed as Hayward's backup, while second-rounder Quinten Rollins and Demetri Goodson are listed as backups to Shields.

On special teams, Micah Hyde is the team's first punt returner while rookie Ty Montgomery is listed as the team's primary kick returner.  Montgomery and Randall Cobb are the second and third punt returners.  Hyde was listed as the second kick returner, followed by Cobb and Jeff Janis.

Richard Rodgers is the team's top tight end with Andrew Quarless listed as second.  Quarless still has not received any type of reprimand from the NFL for his involvement in a July 4th incident in which he fired a handgun twice near a group of people that he was with and was later found trying to hide the gun.  Quarless recently returned to the team this past week a few days after he and his wife had a stillborn baby girl.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Quarless and his family.

And just in case someone is reading our blog for the very first time and isn't aware of how incredibly and amazingly good Aaron Rodgers is at quarterback, I'm here to report the Rodgers is listed as the team's starter in 2015.

Tom Clements/Playcalling - Tom Clements was promoted to associate head coach this past offseason and will take over the playcalling duties on gameday.  McCarthy had previously called plays since his arrival in 2006.  Clements will be moving from the press box to down on the field in order to aid in getting plays in and allowing the team's no-huddle offense to operate more efficiently.  Edgar Bennett, previously wide receivers coach, was promoted to offensive coordinator and Bennett will also be on the sideline during games.

There has been some debate about how much invovlement Clements will really have, as Rodgers tends to make quite a few changes and checks at the line of scrimmage.  With all parties involved having been with the team over the past few seasons, there should hopefully be little change or disruption to the scheme that scored points consistently last season.  This was especially true at home.  Rodgers has often said the team's goal is to win out at home and finish at .500 on the road.  The Packers are expected to win between 11 and 12 games this season, according to the top oddsmakers.

Undrafted free agent update - As for those who haven't been on the Packers roster in the past and came into training camp undrafted, cornerback LaDarius Gunter and linebacker Joe Thomas appear to be getting some of the top reviews so far after a handful of practice sesssions.  Thomas was in camp last season with the Packers and had a knee injury in preseason game one that ended his season.  An emergency by Thomas would be a welcome sight for the Packers, as he would add some valuable depth at inside linebacker.  Gunter benefited from the absence of Hayward during the spring portion and also from some practice time missed by Shields.  He alwasy seems to be in my Twitter timeline during practices and has a nose for the football so far.  It's not game action, but making plays in practice is where is has to start and Gunter is keeping himself relevant.

Tight end Mitchell Henry has also flashed and is said to have some of the best hands in camp thus far.

A pair of running backs, Rajion Neal and John Crockett, are also vying for a roster spot.  Neal was having a solid preseason last year when a knee injury derailed his quest to make the active roster.  Neal was signed to the practice squad in week eight and has some time in the team's offense.  Crockett came in with some hype that he could turn heads.  He sprained his ankle during the team's offseason and will need every rep and chance in preseason games to secure his spot behind Eddie Lacy and James Starks.

Preseason opener - The Packers kick off their preseason schedule this Thursday night when they visit the Patriots.  The game will be nationally televised on NBC and is scheduled for a 6:30pm CDT kickoff.

Uh, Jason. Hate this to be my first comment, but I believe you meant to say an "emergence" by Thomas, not an "emergency" would be welcomed. Wink.
