Packers Trade Up in the 5th Round For Quarterback Brett Hundley

The UCLA product will be allowed to sit and learn behind Rodgers and Tolzien.

Well, Ted Thompson didn't listen to me - which is probably good for everyone involved.

The Packers surprsied more than a few fans and pundits by trading up to the 11th pick of the 5th round and selecting UCLA qurterback Brett Hundley.

Hundley will be allowed to learn behind Aaron Rodgers and Scott Tolzien, which is exactly what the inconsistent but talented signal caller needs at this point in his development.

From my buddy Lance over at NFL.com

Hundley flashes athleticism and talent, but his basic quarterbacking issues will take time to improve. In 2014, more than 54 percent of his pass attempts were from six yards and in, including 29 percent from behind the line of scrimmage, which is nothing like an NFL offense. Hundley is a "flash" prospect who shows the physical tools to be a starter, but his internal clock and issues with reads and progressions must be improved to give him a shot at becoming a decent NFL starter.

Eliot Wolf described Hundley as "a football nerd" during his post-pick  press conference. High praise indeed.

He better show very little in TC and pre-season. --- Needs to go to PS for a year or two.

Love this pick. Love it. Bbecause they are finally taking backup QB seriously. Taking an 0-4 if Rodgers goes down for a month can wreck a season. Having a guy that can go 2-2 or better makes me feel much better about things.

If they develop him right, he bring back a 5th or better when he moves on, either as a comp pick or a straight-up trade. If he flames out, well, plenty of 5ths do anyways.

I love athletic backup quarterbacks that can run the ball when things inevitably break down. They don't get enough reps in practice really to run the offense well. Think of Flynn in Detroit game when Rodgers missed a few series. He was awful. Three and outs and Detroit went from down 14 to tied. But, a guy like this can move sticks with his feet and make the easy passes to get by. It just seems to throw the defense for a loop.

I'm fine with Hundley and agree with Eddielee. This guy is a great athlete. Love to hear that he likes football and loves to look at film. A lot of what makes a QB good is between the ears. Hundley sounds coachable, and GB has some good QB coaches.

Does this mean he'll have to be on the 53? I doubt he'd make it to PS.

He wouldn't clear waivers. He is either on the 53 or on another team. He might not be game day active (emergency QB) until next year.

I think they keep 3 QB's unless they really soured on Tolzien by the end of the year. Which might be the case considering Tolzien couldn't bump Flynn out of the #2 spot by the end of the year.

Good point. There is a bit of disconnect between how much the staff is said to love Tolzien and that he was behind a guy they are not even considering bringing back for 2015.
