Packers signing QB Alex McGough

The former Seahawks draft pick was the USFL MVP in 2023.

The Packers have reportedly found another camp arm, and possibly something more.

Per Aaron Wilson, the Packers will be signing quarterback Alex McGough, formerly of the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL.

This past season. McGough completed 67.4% of his passes for 2,105 yards and set modern USFL records with 20 touchdown passes with a QBR rating of 108.3. He also rushed for 403 yards and five touchdowns on 70 carries, on his way to being named the USFL MVP.

McGough was a seventh-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks out of Florida International.

No word yet on a corresponding move.

Excellent. And I really couldn't believe that The Plan was to draft a guy on Day 3 and expect him to start if Love is injured. That's (almost) never The Plan. I figured a veteran, a guy who had actually played and won games, but I guess the USFL MVP is who they've settled on. They (the 1265 brass) figured this was it....better than Bridgewater or anybody else.

He's 27, he's been on some practice squads. Look, if the MVP of the USFL can't beat out a Day 3 rookie, then you have to ask some questions about how good that league is(n't), or how good the GB scouting staff is. My prediction? He'll win the backup spot.

I'm also reminded of Kurt Warner, who was an older guy playing in the Arena League when suddenly, he was on his way to the Super Bowl with the Rams

That would be a wasted 5th round pick if the case...I have to believe he is a camp arm there to push Clifford. If Clifford was not drafted in the 5th round be the backup then why take him there? That would definitely be a wasted pick.

Why would it be a wasted 5th round pick? Clifford was drafted to put on the practice squad so he could develop and then NEXT year he could be our backup. Most 5th rounders contribute little as rookies, and I can only recall one time in the last 30 years where we went into the season with a rookie as the backup.

Clifford would need to be cut to be placed on the practice squad. I don't think you draft a QB in the 5th to cut that player after camp, expose him to waivers and place on the PS... Why develop and draft a guy in the fifth to develop on the PS? The USFL guy in that case would run scout team and get scout team reps..so Clifford would not really develop at all, it would be a wasted pick...

The Packers have frequently drafted/signed multiple players at one position (three WRs, three OL, two TEs) in any given year. So what if they signed two QBs in the same year? That isn't a wasted pick/signing; it is competition. May the best player win!

well. he throws a much better ball than Teddy Bridgewater, who floats ten yard outs.

also, he was never with the vikings. he has that going for him, no stigma of lifetime failure.

Feel better now? Lol.

Yeah, McGough looks like the shit. The real deal. 100%. Kurt Warner is the perfect point in case. Success in the NFL is rarely a straight line.

Hell, I feel better about GB’s backup QB position, and I wasn’t even feeling bad! Great value add.

LH, I'm sad to see this for several reasons. First, it means they don't have confidence in either Etling or Clifford. I didn't really expect to see Clifford get #2, but I was hoping the competition would produce excellence. This decision means it didn't.

Second, hiring him this late gives him less time to learn the system. I read his comments but I would've rather seen him hired within a few days of minicamp ending.

Third, I'd rather see his cap hit available next year, whatever it is. I put this last because I expect it will be small, and IF we need a backup QB at all hopefully it's not early in the season so he does still have time to learn the playbook. Lack of off season with the team will make a difference though.

Mostly I'm hoping our O line dominates at every position and JL10 stays upright and injury free, not even needing to scramble. If that goes sideways I'm not sure any backup QB will really be an adequate replacement.

While watching him play in the Championship Game, I was wondering what NFL team would give him a chance. He just might sneak ahead of Sean Clifford, who I never thought much of in college. Or they'll try and sneak him on the practice squad and someone else will pick him up ...

I don't think they signed a 27 year old for the practice squad. The Packers are expecting him to be the backup QB.

They were going to need another arm just to take some of the volume of camp throws off Love, Etling, and Clifford.

I agree dobber. They needed one at least average QB because they have a bunch of rookie pass catchers. It is the reason they need some at least some average QB as 4th QB. Is he better than Etling? Maybe. Also, he can be insurance for back up job if Jordan Love goes down.

For me, this talks more about how Packers think of Danny Etling than how they feel about Clifford. But, time will tell.

A 27 year old USFL QB is the definition of a camp arm....How could he possibly be more than that?? Love or hate the Sean Clifford pick, Clifford has played thousands of snaps in the BIG, there is zero shortage of film of him. With that, the scouting department and Gute decided he was worth a 5th round pick to be the backup QB. If not, that would be an admission of failure with the pick. Sean Clifford would need to have a disastrous training camp to be cut...like an OMG this guy cannot play at all type of Camp.

Right now, the backup QB situation is a mess. None of these guys inspires much confidence at this point that they could come in and go .500 if asked to start 4-6 games due to an injury to Love. Emphasize: that's based on what we know right now, which is next to nothing. Even Etling is mostly an unknown commodity.

We always overestimate the number of guys who are signed away at cutdowns. Virtually everyone teams want to get to their PS make it to their PS. There are going to be a slew of young QBs who are turned loose at cutdowns...unless Clifford lights the night on fire in preseason, he should have no problem getting to the PS. To an outside team, a rookie QB who has not played in your system is almost useless and, once he's on the PS, nobody is going to sign him away because they have to give him a spot on their 53. In the end, I'd rather judge the success/failure of the Clifford pick based on his volume of work in GB...not by whether he beats out these other guys or they tryt to put him on the PS at cutdowns in 2023.

Bure,

I disagree that a fifth round backup QB has to earn #2 in his rookie year or he's a bust. It's just not how GB does things. It would make almost 0 sense to require two starters in a row to sit for three years, but expect a rookie to carry the team as a second stringer.

I expect the new hire to be #2, but the competition in TC will be even more intense.

You can disagree, I don't see any way they cut a 5th round QB unless he is just awful in camp.

This is the first film I've seen of him. Looks like a guy that would be pretty fun to watch. Showed good feet in the pocket and scrambling skills. I liked that he didn't try to always escape out to the right as many inexperienced QBs do, but many times to the left and threw with pretty good accuracy when doing so. Highlight film I understand, but still showed that skill.

Really astute signing and friends, he's more than a 'camp arm'. He likely will win the second QB job, enabling Clifford to do what Love did; watch and learn.

The USFL is professional football albeit nowhere near the NFL. But you have a guy who can win and this is a very good signing.

I feared Jordan Love getting hurt and being out for a few or several games. The offense will be more ground oriented, but the team will need to throw the ball effectively to be balanced. This guy will come in in shape and with recent play under his belt in a professional league.

Even if this guy bombs they will spend very little bringing him in, certainly less than Teddy Bridgewater.

It's like we're sharing the same brain on this. Astute is an excellent word to describe this. He will likely be the backup this year, and Clifford will be on the PS. For the next couple of years, our backup QB position should be solid, and cheap.

Could be that this move is nothing more than bottom of the roster churn. Is he better that Etling and can he be placed on a practice squad? Then, can he push Clifford? If yes the we have improved the bottom of the QB room.

You may be right on this. I just don't think The Plan, going into the offseason, was that we'd just draft the best QB we could get in the 5th round and he'd be our backup. That contradicts what we've done at that position for the last 30 years. The Green Bay Way is to develop players, especially QBs, and that's what is going on with Clifford. We'll let him learn for a year and then maybe next year he's our #2.

The "Green Bay Way" of drafting and developing backup QBs has resulted in ONE decent backup QB since 2008...Matt Flynn, who, by the way, flamed out when given the opportunity to be a starter.

Name me one QB that the "Green Bay Way" of drafting and developing QB's since the turn of the century has gone on to even excel as a viable backup other than Flynn, Rodgers excluded obviously, as he wasn't drafted to be a backup.

They drafted several good QBs in the 90s. Hasselbeck, Detmer, Brooks. Since 2000...not so much.

I have suggested we sign Carson Wentz.
The USFL star is a bargain…and maybe a keeper, but Wentz (an NDSU star like Watson) has a pedigree; he was an acl injury from likely being named the NFL mvp and potential SB winner.
Go Packers!!!

Hell, McGough’s highlights were off the chain! Looks to be an unexpectedly good FA signing from far away. If he’s a quick study with a full TC to prove he belongs, McGough has a chance to make that backup QB position a strength.

Seeing an “it” factor with him missing from the other candidates. That’s my big early takeaway.
