Packers Reportedly Sign Former Broncos Linebacker Lerentee McCray

The Denver Post reports that Green Bay has signed the outside linebacker.

From the Denver Post:

Another former Broncos defender has moved on in free agency. Outside linebacker Lerentee McCray signed contract with the Green Bay Packers Monday, an NFL source confirmed.

McCray was a restricted free agent, but the Broncos did not tender him an offer, allowing him to sign freely with another team.

McCray played in 24 regular-season and four postseason games for the Broncos over the past two seasons totaling 24 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble.

Since he was not tendered an offer, the former undrafted free agent will not count toward the compensatory pick formula, as is Ted Thompson's M.O.

McCray will most likely make any immediate impact on special teams, where he played extensively for the Broncos.

I'm sure his new teammate Randall Cobb is happy not to have to deal with him any more:

Ok, am I the only one laughin' like hell @ Cobb? What the hell was that? Seriously.

1) We can either credit the LB for making a good play

or

2) Talk about how bad of a job Rodgers/Cobb did

Why is there 3 Broncos near Cobb as soon as he makes the catch? Was that pass lofted to Cobb?

Considering that's the game they managed 77 yards passing I'd say that was one of the better plays!!! Damn, that was an Ugly game.

What does the guy do other than special teams? Is he a coverage ILB? Thumper? Hell, even a pass rusher?

Edit: Saw that he played OLB with Denver. Well... that's good. I guess. TT probably going for cheap OLB depth. Probably means Neal is gone even if they don't get one in the draft.

It's typical for most of TT signings, but better than the Daniel Muirs on his record. This guy has a pretty good chance to stick, if only because he plays ST and OLB is an area of need.

THe beauty of the play is that it wasn't 'hitting'. He wrapped up and secured the ball carrier, and drove through him to the dirt.

Defenders who are into hitting end up whiffing or giving up the big play when the ball carrier doesn't get tossed to the ground.

I'll take a form-tackle de-cleater over the big hitting play all. day. long. :)

So so true. "Tackling" has become too much of a collision hitting approach just knock him down by hitting as fast and hard as you can, guided missile style. I'll take the sure no extra yards tackle almost all the time.

He has almost no stats ....I hope that's because he was playing behind some good talent...not cause he is terrible.

Was stuck behind Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware, Shane Ray and Shaquil Barrett . Played a LOT of special teams. 28 special teams snaps in the Super Bowl.

I have often wondered why the Packers don't sign backup players from teams with position groups of great talent. Either those teams draft real well for those positions, or they have some great position coaches where players learned and learn a lot. Either way, my suspicion was always that even the 5th or 6th player on those teams' groups may be a legit NFL starter if given the chance. Or at the very least be a good backup who could be the 3rd or 4th player on most NFL teams. Just is unlucky to have great players in front of his nose at his current team. Here is hoping that this is such a case, since I don't think there is a better OLB group in the NFL currently than what Denver has.
And if not, there is nothing to lose. At the very least, this young man could be a great ST contributor, and I am sure he is not breaking the salary cap...

Or, TT just told MM, "Here's a football player we think has talent. Welp, that about does it, we brought in talent. Now You do your coaching thing. I'll be over here if you need me."

Or he might just be trolling MM. I hear TT likes to do that.

good one Al :-)

I actually like the signing. The guy was stuck behind some real good players. At the very least, he should be able to contribute quite a bit on ST. Seems to be a good tackler, and that is what this team needs. At least worth giving a shot at training camp. Whether he will stick around or not remains to be seen, but this is a no-risk signing.

Per Aric Manthey Predominantly Orange on 11/2/15:

"He really made his presence known last night against Green Bay, recording 3 tackles and playing in relief duty of Von Miller on the occasional play. If you ask me, McCray could be a starting outside linebacker for many teams in the NFL right now. ...he could win a starting job and be an every down player in this league."

Per NFL.com: Versatile defender who rushes the passer from either side of the line, with his hand down or standing up. Solid get-off from a hand-down position, can stay low and has excellent flexibility to turn the corner, length to wrap up quarterbacks and separate the ball on impact. Also wins B-gap by coming off low and strong. Uses his length to get leverage when bull-rushing or facing double teams on the edge despite his slight build. Powerful hands that result in a jolt on contact. Works hard through blocks to reach the quarterback if the ball stays in the pocket. Hustles to chase plays across the line and downfield. Stays on his feet through cut blocks, uses his hands to keep balance. Agile enough to drop into a zone. Shows hands for the easy interception.

Has an injury history, also rotated out of games regularly; must prove stamina to be an every-down player. Lean defender who can be knocked off his path as a pass rusher by a strong punch. Relies on outside rush too often, needs counter moves to take advantage of inside lane. Struggles to get off blocks when leaning into his man on the edge. Must prove he has the agility and bend to move with receivers outside in coverage.

Guy is injured a lot, which prevented him from participating in the combine. No pro day either. Had been thought of as a 5th Rd pick, but Denver signed him as an UDFA. Missed his whole rookie season.

Playing behind Von and DeMarcus, hopefully McCray just needs this opportunity. At the very least, he appears to be a Special Teams stud. Welcome to Green Bay!

'Playing behind Von and DeMarcus, hopefully McCray just needs this opportunity.'

That is exactly what I'm hoping. I am hoping that playing behind those guys plus Shane Ray, just had him buried on the depth chart. It would be great to see him come in and have an impact.
At the very least he should help on special teams.

Let's think of it like this... Lerentee McCray or Andy Mulumba?

> McCray: Couldn't get on the field because of Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.

> Mulumba: Couldn't get on the field because of Nick Perry and Mike Neal.

Alrighty, then.

And Mulumba couldn't even play special teams.

I actually liked the idea of trying Mulumba as a thumper inside when things were getting rough depth-wise in the middle, but those guys are pretty easy to come by.

April 19, 2016 at 10:25 am

Yup. And I would say that McCray has to be a modest upgrade to both defensive depth and ST. Mulumba was a game day inactive 9 times last year, played only 10% of the teams ST snaps and 0% of the defensive snaps. So McCray has to be at least a "modest upgrade" in the sense that you couldn't really get any less than we got from Mulumba.

Nice signing. Don't shut out Neals return either. The best pass rushers will be gone by #27. The DTs are the best in 10 years. TT is showing he will stay to the strength of the draft.
