Packers Select Texas Tech TE Jace Amaro in Second Round of #MockOne Draft

With the 53rd overall selection, the Green Bay Packers got the tall, seam-busting tight end missing from their offense in this mock draft exercise.

The Green Bay Packers selected Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro in the second round of the #MockOne draft.

In Amaro, the Packers get the tall, stretch-the-seam receiver missing from their offense as long as Jermichael Finley is injured and remains unsigned.

Amaro had 108 receptions in 2013 for 1,352 yards, which set the all-time FBS record for players classified as tight ends. He also had seven touchdowns.

Another receiver that can line up in the slot will give quarterback Aaron Rodgers plenty of receiving options among a corps that includes Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Jarrett Boykin and Andrew Quarless as the in-line tight end.

The knock on Amaro is his inexperience as an in-line blocker, seeing as he was split wide a vast majority of his time at Texas Tech.

For the second consecutive round, I was out-voted by members of our war room. Amaro was not even among my top three preferences among players who were still on the board with the 53rd overall pick.

Had it been solely my decision, I would have pulled the trigger on Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who is a similar tall red zone threat as a receiver but can also line up in a three-point stance and contribute the Packers' ground game.

Some people are turned off by Jenkins' arrest for DUI but Amaro is no choir boy either, having been arrested (but not charged) for using a credit card without his name and also being ejected and suspended for throwing a punch in Texas Tech's 2012 bowl game.

USC center Marcus Martin and Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews were also still available and under consideration with the 21st selection in the second round.

One other item of note, despite safety being a position of need on the Packers roster, this particular online mock draft is not falling to them rather favorably.

Gone by the time the Packers selected in the first round were Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Jimmie Ward and Deone Bucannon, and off the board by their pick in the second round were Calvin Pryor and Terrence Brooks.

If we can't draft Dix, Pryor, Ward, or Bucannon, that's okay. If you look at Micah Hyde's size, speed and college stats, he compares rather favorably to the rest of Safeties in this draft. And Hyde has already proven he can play on the NFL level.

You might want to consider CB Pierre Desir with a 3rd round pick, or WR Donte Moncrief, or DT Daquan Jones.

With the draft approaching and knowing the Packers are thinking of moving Micah Hyde to Safety, I think it's relevant to know the stats on Hyde when he came out of college last year:
6', 197, 4.56 40 yd. combine
At Iowa: 240 tackles 155 solo, 5.5 TFL, 4 FF, 8 interceptions, 14 passes defended (deflections)

He mostly played CB and didn't have as many opportunities for TFL or FFs as a full-time Safety.

For comparison here's Brooks:
5' 11", 198, 4.42
126 tackles 88 solo, 9.5 TFL, 3FF, 5 interceptions, 15 passes defended (deflections)

Brian, I'm curious where the following players have been selected:

Marcus Smith
Jerry Attaochu
Allen Robinson

I personally think they are all better prospects than either jenkins or amaro. That's the problem with these MockOne drafts, its easy to be way to focused on drafting for need

I would be happy with Amaro or Seferian- Jenkins in round 2. The Packers definitely need an upgrade at tight end.

I can't see the Packers spending an early round pick on a Center. I think it is Tretter's job to lose, and the Packers may select someone later to challenge him, but they need some impact players early.

I would rather have a better run blocking TE than Amaro. A guy who can block, good hands and can get open in the red zone. In round 2 I'd rather see a WR or maybe a CB/safety assuming we picked Mosley in Rd. 1.
