Packers Select DT Montravius Adams In 2017 NFL Draft, Round Three

With their third-round pick (93rd overall) in the 2017 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select Montravius Adams, DL, Auburn.

With their third-round pick (93rd overall) in the 2017 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select Montravius Adams, DL, Auburn.

Measurables / Combine:

4.87s 40-yard dash; 22 reps bench press; 29-inch vertical jump; 108-inch broad jump; 7.62s 3-cone drill; 4.89s 20-yard shuttle.

Career Notes:

The big man from the inside of Auburn’s defensive line made his presence known as he racked up 10.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. He saw a slight up-tick in his 2016 senior season with his totals slightly rising after a bit of a let-down in his junior campaign. He even snagged a couple picks from the inside of the line.

NFL.COM DRAFT PROFILE

Scouting Report:

CHEESEHEADTV.COM: Because of the preponderance of nickel and dime packages in the modern NFL, interior defensive players are not nearly as valued as they were in previous generations because players at the position do not play nearly as many snaps as they used to. While he has the tools to be a solid interior rusher, he will not walk into the NFL with that skill. Right now, he is a competent, rotational defensive lineman with the skills and talent to evolve into a solid starter. Because of how obsessed the NFL is with potential, especially with regards to a prospect’s size and speed ratio, Adams is likely to be drafted earlier than his tape and production dictate, which is always a risk. But the reward of these players hitting in a big way will always have NFL teams returning to that well hoping they can find a mid-round steal.

CBSSPORTS.COM: He carries his 296-pound frame very well with the initial quickness and lateral agility to attack gaps and penetrate the backfield. Adams has been dinged for his lack of consistency in the past, but new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp should be able to get the best out of the gifted lineman.

Commentary:

After some unsureness about the future of the line between the aging of Mike Daniels and the initial let-down of Kenny Clark’s inaugural year, Montravius Adams gives Green Bay some depth in the middle.

Adams fits the 3-technique mold that could help strengthen Dom Capers’ 3-4 defense as the Packers shift to a nickel-heavy scheme. Adams is safe, but not a boring pick. His size gives him the opportunity to bat balls down and create disruption in the middle.

He wasn't who I was expecting, but prior to the draft, and I don't remember the reason, I looked at where this guy was being mocked.....it was all over the board. One or two known publications had him in the first round! So if you want to make your opponent throw, you have to stop the run. Guion may be gone this season and Rickey is maybe a 1-2 year rent. Meet part of the meat packing wall that will force those offenses to throw verses running on Green Bay. Remember what Dallas did to Green Bay, you have to stop the run and now you see TT making an effort to do that. Hadn't thought too much about the run defense issue, but it sure looks like the front office hasn't.
PS
He'll free up the ILBs to go and make some plays, another intended bonus.

In that tape he held up on double teams really well, against Alabama even.

I like the pick. DT was smart. Lets compare him to warren Sapp and not thornton.

Clark was a let down? Really after he was forced into a starting role early he seemed to carry his own as the season went on I don't consider him as having a disappointing rookie year , I think he takes a step forward this season after having a full year . This was an unnecessary pick , pass rusher was more of a need.

I haven't seen any signs of Daniels aging either...

I agree in that I would really have liked to see some help on the edge in these first 3 rounds, but Adams has interior pass rush potential and can anchor. I always cringe at players that they say "run hot and cold". It might not bet the pick I would have made (and not being an expert, I realize that doesn't mean much) but I can understand why they took him.

This is a guy who is being drafted on potential. The Packers are betting that they can get a lot more out of a guy whose coaching staff was a revolving door. If you thought Clark had a disappointing rookie year ( I didn't) you're really going to hate this guy.

Clark had a great year. I suspect some people don't understand Calrk has a totally different role form Daniels.

Hopefully not just his contract year. Seems I read he took his junior year off.

It appears there is a strong lack of faith with Randall, Rollins as Thompson re-enacts his selecting two DB'S back to back though these selections are much higher quality from the start and King alone will will out perform the previous two.
At this time, it seems a one year resurrection of Matthews is being counted on, a regression of Perry to injury farm is a fingers crossed hope not and Fackrell makes the leap that is expected by myself and the more likely of the scenarios to be reality.
Can't comment on Montrail Adams yet but our DL always needs a big body.

That's a lot to hope for. It's all about rotational depth. You need enough quality players at corner and along the D line to last 20 games. Maybe we'll see one more corner picked.

I did not like this pick but after watching his film and reading scouting reports this guy is a beast , maybe Cullen Jenkins type , some said he is one of the top lineman in draft plus the fact we got our pass rusher after him I like it.
