Packers Reportedly "In the Mix" for OL Ty Sambrailo in the First Round

From the "For What It's Worth Department," Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net speculates that the Green Bay Packers could be interested in offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft.

In a piece published Monday, Pauline writes:

The Colorado State tackle struggled at times during the Senior Bowl and teams came away questioning his functional football strength. On the other hand his athleticism is not a concern (still remember watching as Sambrailo caught a touchdown pass last season). Sambrailo may not have the fastest forty time on Friday but check and see how his shuttle and 3-cone times stack up against the rest of the offensive linemen. There’s still a chance Sambrailo slides into the late part of round one. I previously posted on the Seattle Seahawks admiration for Sambrailo and now hear the Green Bay Packers are in the mix. The team could lose Bryan Bulaga via free agency in the coming weeks and the feeling is Sambrailo’s athleticism and ability to easily move around the field makes him a perfect fit for the Aaron Rodgers led Packers.

It's important to take all draft conjecture with a grain of salt, however. Pauline might have connections to the Packers through their website, but his reports aren't gospel. Treat it as one more piece to the puzzle, no more or less valid than any other paid NFL Draft analyst.

Have to think the only way GB even looks at an OT is if Bulaga leaves. Maybe this is a sign that talks aren't going well, but more than likely this is really nothing

In the first round, yes.

But they will probably draft an OT in the middle rounds. Thompson always drafts an OL in the middle rounds of the draft. He has had some really good recent success doing so too.. I expect that to continue.

File under "you can never have too many good o-lineman," but when Bulaga is re-signed, the Packers OL is pretty crowded.

With Bahk, Bulaga, Sitton, Lang and Linsley entrenched as starters, then with Tretter and Barclay able to back up all 5 positions, it'll be really hard for a rookie to crack the 53.

Agree Evan that the 3 interior starters are really good. Bakh is at best an average LT. PFF graded Bakh's run blocking for the season at -13.2 (I thought Bakh got better run blocking after the bye). He was pretty solid pass protector (+7.5 per PFF). His overall grade though was -7.1. I think he will get stronger and continue to improve. Bulaga was a very good pass protector as long as he doesn't have to play on astroturf, and his run blocking was just average (+0.3 per PFF). He is an above average RT.

Barclay has proven that he can be a stop gap RT who will need help on most plays. Tretter's preseason play suggests that he can play OC. There is no evidence that he can back up OG, much less LT or RT.

Tretter was soundly beaten during the Philadelphia Eagles game and drew a personal foul and heavy fine for a leg whip. He came in at RT during the Buffalo game and yielded the game-ending sack and safety to Mario Williams, who owned him.

I think GB needs to consider an OT somewhere this year (thought so last year too in a draft dripping with OTs, at least RTs). Not sure about using the Rd 1 pick, but if someone drops, I'd consider it. GB often keeps 8 OL and has 7 active on game days. I see room for a rookie.

PFF stats literally mean less than nothing.

Totally agree. If Bulaga stays there are many more important needs than improving the depth on OL.

TT will re-sign Bulaga and hopefully continue to draft O Line gems in rounds 4 & 5.

It took DGB a year and a half to learn Mizzou's play book. He's not worth the headache. Can't say I'd be mad if TT pulled the trigger either.

On February 18 as the combine begins in earnest, I have to imagine the Packers are more worried about putting their draft board together than being "in the mix" for any one guy on it.

Doing their due diligence on everyone, regardless of need or projected rank, is a very good thing.

So is drafting at least one offensive lineman each year, regardless of the current roster. At least, 5 guys play each offensive snap. Their collective performance is vital to good offensive production. You want at least 7 guys you are comfortable putting on the field at all times.

It's an interesting tidbit that the Packers appear to have more interest in Sambrailo that some other teams. But nothing too telling.

Don't tell me " Delirious Ted" will drop the ball again with his marginal drafting , which is the real reason the Pack hasn't won more Superbowls with having what they have . Its so simple what to do with this years draft , get Maxx " MgGee " Williams from Minn. in the first round for the red zone TD factor and then focus on inside linebackers and depth with the rest of the draft .

Comments like these (JB's) make me question if freedom of speech is truly a good thing.

Not a chance in hell any reporter knows who the Packers like, let alone who they're looking to draft in the first round.
