Packers release Kylin Hill and Amari Rodgers

The moves come as the team prepares to bring back Randall Cobb from injured reserve.

What was your favorite moment of the Amari Rodgers era?

Earlier this afternoon, the Packers announced that they have released their 2021 third round selection, along with the seventh round selection from the same draft, running back Kylin Hill.

The Rodgers release is probably no surprise after yet another punt return fumble this past Sunday against the Cowboys, which was just the latest in a long line of miscues going back to last season.

The Hill release is a bit of surprise, seeing as the team only elevated him to the active roster last week after bringing him off the Physically Unable To Perform list for the first part of the season. He had one carry for seven yards against the Cowboys and now finds himself on the waiver wire. I suspect there's something behinds the scenes on this one that may or may not come out over time.

The Packers are expected to bring Randall Cobb off injured reserve for Thursday night's game against the Titans, which will fill one of the open roster spots.

Favorite moment: When they cut him.

Second most favorite moment: When they drafted a WR with pedigree in the third round.

LOL!

Degaura has 37 catches for 363 yards and 2 TDs in more than 2.5 seasons in GB (injured most of his rookie season).

Good? Nah, except on the curve of craptastic Packer 3rd round picks.

That said, Josiah is certainly the best 3rd rounder out of Gooters 5 picks so far.

He has been good in the limited opportunities he’s had this season. He may be listed as a TE, but he’s really a Fullback, and that’s why he hasnt been lighting up the stat sheet. He is blocking most of the time, which he has been decent at

And by good, I mean good but not great.

Philly missed the pick. He was mocked to them. Pack would have had to deal with the Raiders or J-ville. @ #19-20. Miami liked Jackson and needed an OT. Plenty of fu s with Ruggs and Jeudy going before Jefferson. He and Chase were generational guys on the LSU squad.

Pack should have burned whatever picks they needed to...that's my point. 2-#1's...whatever.Having him and DA and A.Jones on the field at the same time...I just feel we'd have our Trophy by now....And that's what it's all about.

A lot of fans liked Goodson in the preseason; maybe he'll get elevated to replace Hill.

Every chance to succeed? The dude sucked at returning punts and they made that his only job. He was hardly given a chance to do what he was drafted for, i.e., a slot receiver with great route running skills.

“great route running skills “?

Watkins, who goes 180 degrees opposite where he is supposed to go was playing ahead of him. So were all the guys running shitty routes on the Warner video. The evidence points to him being even worse.

I think you're right about that...But, the ball security issues would come into play at the WR position also if he didn't improve that. His College tape looked good and I do think he would eventually get somewhere in the slot...You gotta hold onto the ball...That's what did it. AR had big issues with this kid and the first season he came in way too heavy and lost his zip on the ground. Hopefully Jags pick him up and a career is not lost. He's got more figured out now than when he came in. AR seems to lose a lot of balls getting sacked also.

Packers sign Tim Ward, a pass rushing OLB at 6'6" and 255 pounds. Yes, they signed Ward to the PS, but it is quite possible they elevate him for the Titans game. Now that they signed Patrick Taylor to the 53, they don't need to have a 3rd RB for the game. Maybe they elevate K Ahmad again. Ballentine and Abram are on the 53, so do they need to elevate a DB? Probably not. I assume that Cobb gets activated to fill that last roster spot in time for the game, so they would have 5 WRs available despite releasing Amari. They might elevate Fulgham, I suppose.

I'd consider elevating Heflin because he is supposed to be a good run-defending DE and GB plays TN and Derrick Henry.

Sounds like the right move with both players. Hill may have had issues with a coach or attitude problem which we may find out later. I would think the spots are filled by Cobb and Taylor, but maybe Goodson gets a chance. A poster here recently said that GB hangs onto players too long. I applaud both moves and find someone better. Rudy Ford looks like the "find" this season. Packers finally had a good effort in the win against the Cowboys when it looked bleak at the end of the game. I think the confidence will help to give a good showing against the Titans and another win. One game season each week.

Hill really surprises me. Hope they sign him to the practice squad. Poor kid has had a rough year. Liked his grit during camp on the knee squad.

Hope a new place will help Amari turn his career around. I think the Vikings need a kick returner. He can follow the path of other Packers to Vikings receivers.

Kind of doubting the PS Dobber. If they wanted to keep Hill, they could (and should) have just left him on PUP. Bringing him off PUP to cut him feels like something else. Time will tell.

I'm with Guam.

But maybe taking a pay cut from $705K to $430K (while on a split contract with a PUP status) to $11.5K per week is enough a wake up call? Hard to guess, but I'd suggest that if his attitude problem was sufficient to release Hill and make him subject to waivers, then a PS signing is unlikely. They'd have to make room for him on the PS, not that that poses a significant issue.

I liked the pick in the draft after watching his highlights pre draft. Thought he had something to contribute. Surprised they did not try and do a trade w/ Jags. I hope they pick him up and maybe we finally see what he can do with QB trust. He's definitely not an NFL returner. I think GB liked him and work ethic and everything but AR wasn't feeling it and he blew quite a few returns and often ran at ST players....If they could not play him anywhere they cut him...Maybe he goes to PS...but unlikely.

Long overdue move on Amari Rodgers. It took our staff far too long to realize that he was hurting the team and that it was time to chuck him and move on. Good to see that they finally woke up.

I'm surprised about Hill. Perhaps he has not fully recovered from his injury. It will be interesting to see who takes his roster spot.

If Hill gets resigned to the practice squad, then the "not fully recovered from his injury" scenario seems likely (although in that case they never should have brought him off the PUP list), but if he is not resigned, then something else was going on. Too bad as I liked what I saw of him when he played.

I wish Amari Rodgers well as he seemed like a good, hard working kid but am I glad he is no longer a Packer. I was tired of holding my breath on every punt return.

I liked what I saw of Kylin Hill. Thought he should have replaced AJ Dillon in the Lions game. One touch - seven yards - goodbye. Must be something more than a talent issue. The Amari Rodgers release doesn't surprise me given his performance as a return man and as a WR. Missed too many assignments as a WR and made too many mistakes otherwise. QB1 was luke warm on the guy and wonder if he couldn't figure out the offense or didn't apply himself. Either way he had to go if only to give someone else a chance.

Most folks focus on Amari Rodgers' lack of skill as a kick returner. To me his biggest failure is to seize the moment when the team badly needed a wide receiver.

Adams was gone, Lazard and Cobb were injured. Watkins was invisible and Watson was hurt most of the time or making key drops. Here's a third round pick in his second year in the system with a golden opportunity to become the 'go to' guy for Aaron Rodgers. Instead they had him inactive when they were short receivers to play. That, to me, said volumes about his ability to play the pro game.

The number of players drafted who 'make it' usually is in the 50 percent range so Rodgers washing out isn't that big of a surprise but how is it he can go from being so good in college to a fumbling under achiever? I guess if anyone can answer that they would be a GM.

Lack of skill as a kick returner?!!? How about as a punt returner? 5 fumbles this year is atrocious. As a WR he is almost as bad- undersized, slow, unproductive, and an incredible bust of a 3rd round pick. Let's not forget Gutey said " it was between him and our bust of a center in the 2nd round". Creed Humphrey anyone?
The 3rd round of the draft has been horrible these last years, the 4th has been good. But how many 4th round picks have been traded to move up in the draft? Didn't we trade up for these bums like Amari Rodgers, D. Savage, etc..

He sure can't say he didn't get a chance to succeed. What got me was that even when he didn't fumble he wasn't very good of a returner. He never showed the quickness or speed that great returners have. Whatever thought process went into drafting him I hope Gutey learns from his mistake on this one.

I've been saying the real problem is Gutt. His evaluation of talent is piss poor at best. May be the worst GM in all of football. He is looking for developmental types to keep the costs down. Orders by Murphy and Ball.

The guy was a dumb ass and thats on Gutt. He wouldnt have been drafted by Spielman and if so Zimmer would have let him go in the first pre season game he fumbled because fumblers costs you games.
The fact he wasnt used immediately as a slot guy and that Rodgers had to beg to get Cobb should tell you the guy was a practice f up from day one. But we kept him because he was a Gutt pick and we gave up a lot to get him. So really Gutt is the problem not Amari Rodgers and Stokes, and Wyatt.

I think PackerAaron is right—something ongoing behind the scenes with Hill. Let’s give Goodson look.
I think Heflin would be a good addition for the Titans game. I like his enthusiasm and run stopping capability.
GM’s clearly do not like to cut their high round picks. Ron Wolf said if you make a mistake with a pick, admit it and move on—we were far too patient with Amari—he cost us a couple games.

We need to look no further than CHTV to lay blame for the failure of Amari Rodgers. Obviously he's been reading posts here from the get-go and been deeply hurt by the lack of confidence placed in him by so-called fans. Shame on you! Why couldn't you have given Amari a pat on the back when he needed it most rather than calling him a bust? Would it have hurt to encourage him and offer praise? Those of you who have scorned Amari, I challenge you to post the time and date of your posts so that we each may have a spirited tête-à-tête with verve and camaraderie.

There is no doubt in my mind that another who shares blame for Amari's lack of success is one Aaron Charles Rodgers. Why couldn't he have been nicer to Amari? Invited him over for a BBQ or asked him to go to Culver's to build rapport? Does anyone else remember seeing Amari throwing the ball to himself (and dropping most catches) during OTAs? Sad! It was so sad! I hope Rodgers is happy now that he's ruined a young man's life with his selfishness and greed. There's not enough toad venom or hippie tea in the world to get that stain off his soul. Did you see him yell at Coach LaFleur on Sunday? I pray he will repent and cast aside his wicked ways.

He wasnt the new slot reciever Gutt envisioned because he was too stupid to learn the playbook. End of Story, another Gutt busts and we still have others on this team.

Could never break into the WR group. Was a disaster as a returner. He no longer had a role. This should come as no surprise, regardless of how you felt about him as a person. Maybe he'll catch on with another team, but he's not going to be anything other than a backup. That's life in the NFL more than not. Hill is a surprise, but as others have said, it may be something internal. We'll probably never know. He may get chance with another team as well. Perhaps we'll see Goodson. He was a fav of mine and I mocked him in 7th round. However, as others have said as well, we might see an edge rusher signing. I suspect they may leave it open for now to see how they do against the Titans or Philly. See if they can make a late run at the playoffs. Otherwise, it'd be a wasted signing.

HaHaHa! I think Kruse probably intended to write, "It's worth noting..."
Do Freudian slips apply to the written word? / - : #

He's pretty much Amari Rodgers. A little older, and he's played a little more, but other than that, he's pretty much the same.

" Westbrook does have eight career fumbles, "........see what I mean?

I thought Amari looked better in the preseason. More confident catching punts. Had one nice return. Scored on an end around with a burst of speed. Maybe it was just a combination of small sample size and wishful thinking, because once the regular season started, he actually looked worse than he did last year. I still think he got put into a bad place when Aaron Rodgers brought Cobb back, but after a year and a half, he needed to show something. Anything. I don't recall a single standout play during his career as a Packer. He had one chance at glory in the final minute of the Lions game. He was open in the end zone, but the ball was thrown behind him and got knocked away by a defender.

LaFleur basically called Hill lazy during his presser today. He wasn't that direct about it, but even using oblique coach-speak, I don't think I've ever heard a coach say anything so critical about a player who was just cut. Usually it's "We want to thank the player for his service and any other questions will need to be directed to Brian Gutekunst."

Two completely different set of circumstances on these cuts....Amari was released by the Packers and Hill fired himself. Kudos to MLF for finally cutting ties with a Top 100 pick that never found a place on this team and being surprisingly candid about Hill who now sounds like he was a locker room cancer. In Amari's case, he may be a better fit with another team....I hope the best for him.
As for Hill, who I really liked at one point, I'm not sure what got into his head. Somewhere along the way Hill forgot that it is rarified air he's breathing by playing in the NFL....as MLF stated, it is a privilege to play for the Green Bay Packers....unfortunately, HIll felt he was above the Packers standard and ultimately snuffed himself out.....good riddance!

Here is explanation from LaFleur about Hill: " being a member of the Green Bay Packers is a privilege. And there are standards and expectations that are placed on every member of this team that we expect guys to live up to. .. But regardless of your role, no matter how big or how small, we expect guys to come to work and just be supportive and own that role to the best of their ability. When you don’t do that, this is what happens.”

I can understand that Hill was released . But funny enough, it happened just 2 days after the Boss (LaFleur) was yelled in front of TV audience and even repeated criticism at press conference. Instead of telling mr. QB1 about standards of being member of PAckers coach even apologized !!! ?? What kind of double standards are that ? Of course their salary is much diferent.
