Packers Question of the day - Impressed by Schum?

The camp battle between veteran Packers' punter Tim Masthay and Wisconsin native Peter Mortell is well in the books, and it has been for quite some time now. Since signing Jacob Schum prior to the team's final preseason game, how well has he performed in your eyes based off of the small preseason and regular season sampling size?

While he punted the ball well overall in Jacksonville aside from a brutal shank in the fourth quarter when perhaps, the Packers needed a field position flip-flop the most, is he much of an upgrade over Masthay? Should the Packers have stuck with "The Ginger Wolverine"?

Not impressed. Too early to say whether he's better than Masthay.

Agree that it's too early to say. Consistent punting seems a lost art for the Packers...

If he's going to have a good game this next games the one he will face them twice a year .

Masthay holds the club record for net punting in a season. So that tells me one thing: nobody has fared better in the weird windy northness that is Lambeau Field. My problem with him was the shanks at inopportune times. So the Packers go out and get a guy who kicked in Florida last year with worse net punting numbers, and in the first game of the year he shanks it at an inopportune time. In Florida. Is it really that hard to punt the ball consistently?

Should the Packers have stuck with "The Ginger Wolverine"? NO!

If he is upgrade to Tim? To early to say, but I think we will have answer before bye!

He is replaceable, if Packers can find better!

So far Schum has been underwhelming but it's really too early to tell for me. Let's give him a few more games. He does seem to have inherited Masthay's propensity for shanking a punt at the worst possible time. I would recommend that TT continue to bring in punters for tryouts and that he keep Mortell's and Masthay's phone numbers handy. Thanks, Since '61

1 game and 4 punts isn't a very big sample size to go off of.
In those 4 punts 2 of them were from his endzone. He had a long of 56 and net average of 42.5. As a whole it wasn't bad. But we will have to wait and see.

Who cares. They're all pretty much the same. Packers fans spend way too much time talking about punters.

There is a real issue, which is the corner depth. Did anyone see Randall Jette in practice? Was there any potential there? He was let go on the first cut.

Probably wishing they hadn't put Dorleant on IR.

Who's the emergency corner, besides Burnett? I think they should give Janis a try there. Might be a better corner than receiver.

Dorleant had a bigger injury didn't he?

If Shields can't go, they have Randall, Rollings, Gunter, and Hyde as 4 CB's. After that they would probably use Brice more.

It depends how bad Hawkins hammy is but yes as someone else already said Hyde will play some CB with only 3 corners going right now. But if Hawkins can't go they need to elevate someone to the active roster just in case they lose another corner during this game.

Don't have any corners on PS. That's why I was asking about Jette earlier. BTW: it would seem that Goodson will be back on team after game 4. I think the end might be near for Shields. That's 5 concussions. At what point do you start to worry about permanent damage?

Besides Jette, how about Robertson-Daniel?

I have started to wonder about Shields. Do the Packers need to start planning their future without him after the season?

I imagine that Robertson Daniel would be the guy they look to first if Hawkins can't go.

Robertson Daniel is on the street. I liked his physicality. I'd like to see him back.

Yes...I'd be very surprised if Shields is back before the bye, and wouldn't be shocked at all if he's forced into retirement by the Packers. They aren't going to screw around with that many concussions. He's fast, but he's too small and not physical enough to do anything but cover. The guys always laying on the field after plays, even when he falls hard when breaking up a pass. This makes me think they must of thought very little of Casey Hayward to let him go because it's game 1 and we already have a shortage of corners.

Is Mortell is available? I would rather a guy who can directional punt. I thought Mortell should be still punting for us.

Well somebody much smarter than anyone on Cheesehead TV thought Mortell wasn't good enough. Imagine that. Schum will be fine....he's the least of our problems, and he's better than Masthay, so that's all I care about.

Not sure that he IS better than Masthay at this point. Maybe more potential. We'll see. There isn't even any frost on the ground yet.

Schum looks to have to more potential to flip field position with a boomer than was possible in the past. But if he's going to shank one at the critical time than he's no better than the last one.

Why is it so hard to find a good punter anyway , when you watch a college game they all seem to have good punting, so there should be plenty to choose from. Or not?

Teams tend to keep good punters... I say give Schum more of a chance before we rule him as sucking

Also re. Sonomaca , you really think Bradford who is so good is going to be in sync enough to light up the Packers? If he was so good why is he traded so much? And besides Diggs can anyone name 4 other Viking receivers?

Vikings receivers besides Diggs: Treadwell, Wright, Thielen, Johnson, Patterson. Wright and Johnson are decent. Thielen is just a guy, although he's burned the Packers in the past. Treadwell might e a bust. Patterson can't play at all.

Yes, Bradford is good, but he doesn't know the system.

The Packers situation at corner is an issue. Apparently, they're trying to make Herb Waters into a corner, just like they did with Shields.

Let's see he has punted only in good weather so far. The conditions in Jacksonville were just about perfect. Has he ever punted with strong winds or in the cold? Maybe hold off your judgement til then.
But so far, not really impressed. As others have stated, maybe more potential than Masthay, but way too early to tell.

Schum punted the same way Masthay did. Inconsistently. So far, I see no difference between the two punters.
