Packers Question of the day - Expectations for Monday

The second primetime game for the Packers in two weeks, and hopefully, this one will culminate in a different result.

The Packers will take their limping talent into Philadelphia on Monday night to face off against the 5-5 Eagles, fresh off a loss against the Seahawks whom the Packers are set to face in two weeks.

What are your expectations for Monday Night Football's marquee match-up?

Expectation is Victory! Come back with their shields or on them. The Packers need to move into playoff mode for the remainder of the season. They need to play like this is an elimination game because it is, basically. Find a way to win. No prisoners, no excuses for 60 minutes. Thanks, Since '61

"The Packers will take their limping Talent"....Hmmmm

There's a piece on PackersNews.com where I thought Dougherty really nailed what's wrong with the Packers, Thompson, and why the Packers are 8-12 in the last 20 games.
If you look at the first 6 drafts TT had and the last 6 drafts, there's a huge difference in the number of players TT hit on. What Dougherty didn't mention and I've suspected with each passing year, is how much better TT looked when he had Schneider, Dorsey, and McKinzie helping him make those picks. Obviously when a Front Office loses that much talent the draft results will suffer. But Dougherty really puts it in perspective IMO just how BAD TT has done the last 6 years. Also keep in mind when the Packers brought in Woodson and Pickett, Schneider was the main reason behind those signings. Had Schneider not pressed for those 2 FA signings, Ted T probably would be without the one SB title he's been credited for.

Just look at the Drafts from 2005 to 2010 and then look at the drafts from 2011 to 2016. Once you do that THEN tell me "In Ted We Trust". Throw in the fact Thompson will ONLY sign a FA who's been cut, and you have a recipe for 4-6 or 8-12, whichever you prefer.

That was a great article. I saw it last week.

While I agree that the first 5 years he found impactful players, with Rodgers, Collins, Mathews, Nelson, Jennings, Jones, Bishop, Sitton, Finley, Lang, Crosby, Flynn he did have a quite a few higher round misses too. He wasn't perfect by any means.

The biggest difference is the last 5 years he hasn't found as many impactful players. Cobb, Perry, Daniels, Lacy, Bakhtiari, Linsley all would be considered impactful players.
Its still to early to say about the 2014 and recent draft classes. Guys like Clinton-Dix, Adams are still emerging. Randall and Rollins have shown a lot of promise, but have missed significant time in their 2nd years. Montgomery and Ryan have emerged. Ripkowksi has been really good.
This years draft Clark looks extremely good for being the youngest drafted player in the league this year. He has a very bright future. Martinez has looked good and could be a player that greatly improves.

Another big difference was in the first 5 years Thompson went out and got Charles Woodson, and Ryan Pickett. The last 5 he got Peppers, and this year he got Cook who has been hurt most of the year. But showed in the last game how he could help.

You are all forgetting that his draft picks haven't panned out since the CBA was signed in 2011... I still think the restrained practices and times have affected their ability to develop their young talent. This is why you are seeing a shift in the power ranks to teams like the Raiders who picked at the top for so many years and got guaranteed, impact players. I think you can't ignore the CBA and it's affect given Thompson's philosophy.

I tried to imagine how to convince Bears to trade Martelius Bennett to Packers instead of Patriots? It is interesting question...
Second, Patriots have their problems when they are playing without Gronkowski, and weak teams (like Jets, Patriots were down 17-13 in the 4th quarter). So, they have their 2 main players not aquired through FA, and one of them is playing under re writed contract whic allows more space to BB...
Oh, very, very clever people I can read hear...

As I say on this blog all the time... you can't use New England as the barometer, they are the exception not the rule. They are the golden goose of the NFL and have possibly the best QB and coach of all time so stop using them as a comparison point they are an outlier.

Should have plugged Raji hole with f.a and drafted w.r.By the time Clark makes an impact Rodgers will be gone In fact there D line sucks.6 years now and we still havent repaced Cullen Jenkins pass rush ability.Take away Matthews and pass rush since 2010 couldnt make an impact against Kimberly Papermakers

I posted this same message a bunch in the past and got down voted big time for it.

Thompson's drafts from 2011-2014 where awful. And, that is the Core of the team right now. I think the last two drafts where probably much better. The 2011 draft got Cobb but otherwise was a complete disaster. Meanwhile Seattle's 2011 daft class was all time.

I Agree! If Ted was a draft guru and had many more hits than he has had with his early round picks then his draft & develop philosophy would work just fine. But when you are drafting very average at best then you need to supplement with some vet FAs to provide roster depth. Ted hasn't figured that out. He is too prideful or stubborn to acknowledge that he just doesn't draft enough high quality players and refuses to make up for those draft mistakes with FAs. I think Belicheck and Schneider have figured that out. Ted hasn't.

Full consistency in drafting doesn't exist especially when your average draft position since 2011 is 27th... the league rewards being crappy by giving you draft picks.

MM fired his defensive staff but kept Moss. They then won a super-bowl. It's time to fire the defensive staff again. Some of the blame just has to go there too.

AR says they can 'sweep the table' for the remaining season. Is this his RELAX call? Just seems so unlikely that this D can hold up to any serious threat. There is always 'hope'. That used to be 'confidence'.

There are so many problems getting written about:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2016/11/22/packers-problem...

You have to wonder if MM/AR and crew read these things. I certainly hope they do. Personally, I hate to be of the opinion that AR is past his prime. But so many players are and others shouldn't even be on the field. Can AR keep HOPE alive?

I'm just not as optimistic as 61 and RC. Nor am I as pessimistic as Cow or Taryn. Nick Perry and I seem to see eye to eye a lot.

My expectation is that the coaching staff and players start to play like their jobs are on the line. But that it's not enough and they lose by 10-14.

I think we just have to accept that this team just isn't talented enough to overcome injuries of any sort. The depth isn't there and that reflects both on the personnel and coaching areas.

Drain. The. Swamp.

I will admit my optimism has wavered this year.

What is funny is Cow has been more optimistic then me lately.

I agree with you that the team is not deep enough with experienced talent to overcome the injuries they have had.

RC,

That's Cow's MO. He's an Eeyore anytime the team looks moderately good. He's a Pollyanna whenever things look extremely bleak. IMO Mostly because he likes seeing people get fired. His thing is that the bums you don't have are always better than the bums you have.

It's pretty messed up when you consider GBs success the past 25 years.

Colin Cowherd blasted the Packers last week on his show, saying they aren't a "step up organization "and went on to say 25 years with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers and only 2 Super Bowls,I found myself agreeing with what he said.

Colin Cowherd is always blasting Rodgers and the Packers. As soon as he talks about the Packers I stop listening.

He is as anti Wisconsin as there is. He blasted the Badgers Guaranteeing the Badgers were going to get BLOWN OUT against Michigan. It was his LOCK OF THE YEAR... (and they lost by 7).

We have seen several weeks worth of evidence as to what/who the Packer are. We are going to get more of the same. The evidence is too overwhelming. It isn't like they are getting any major reinforcements in...we have what we have and I just don't see how the end result changes much.

Actually they are getting some reinforcements in. Cook came back last week, (learning how to use him). Michael will be playing this week (should offer something). Ryan looks to be back which he is their best Run Defender. Randall look like he will return this week which is a huge boost to the secondary.

They are getting reinforcements back. but will it be to late?

Perhaps the bigger question: even if they get everyone healthy, is this truly a super bowl caliber team?

I'm not of the persuasion that yet another 1 and done in the playoffs is acceptable. I'd rather be 4-12 and get a really great draft slot. (hopefully with a new GM).

Really don't have much hope that the Packers win on Monday against the Eagles. I have Zero Confidence in the Packers D. I just hope they put in a respectable performance and don't give up more than 30 point's and get embarrassed on national TV once again. I really hope I'am wrong and the Packers pull this off!

Reasons for optimism.
The Eagles WR's are not as good as the Redskins. Packers CB's match up better against the Eagles WR's. Gunter is a better matchup vs 2 of the Eagles WRs. Green-Beckham and Mathews.

It looks like Jake Ryan maybe back Monday Night as well as Randal. Getting Randall back would be a huge lift to the defense.

First time commenting.

This team was a 10 rung ladder above its Division at seasons start. It was a most a 5 rung team above the scheduled opponents outside the Division, except for the obvious of Seattle.
The complications that have come about weekly has placed this team in a hole with it a 5 rung ladder in a 10 rung deep hole with at least 4 games, Phil, Hou, Sea and either Minn ir Det able to kick the ladder over even if this team can begin a climb back up to finger tip reach of escape.

They have ran so much 2 DL. Pennel and Lowry haven't seen the field much from what I have seen.

Guion, Daniels and Clark all have played well

I'll fix RC's response: Daniels has played well. Guion has been NFL Average or close to it as a run stopper. Clark has flashed quite a bit and has been almost as good as Guion. Pennel has been below average - very inconsistent. Lowry has flashed a bit in very limited snaps but questions remain long term about him.

None. Sit back and watch the train wreck ensue. Only question is which aspect of the team costs them the most while the other aspect or two play half way decent. I'd give a lot to see ST, O, and D play all 4 quarters. I won't hold me breath. Thanks to Iowa looking like Badgers are locked into big ten championship to ease the Packer pain! Ready for Wenz to do what Cam did his first game ever! Dom's D making mediocre and inexperienced QBs look like Dan Marino since 2011!

Lots of talk about the players or lack of that TT has drafted. From the defensive side I really wanted the Pack to draft Noah Spence after I overheard a conversation how good he was. The point being you need playmakers and he hasn't drafted one in a few years. I'm sure Clark will be ok, but will he be a playmaker? No. It's what is missing in the Packers on both sides of the ball.
