Packers Practice Roundup: July 27, 2022

Lots of interesting news revealed today, plus some plays were made on the field!

The Packers first day of training camp opened today.  A lot of interesting information was revealed today, and some plays were made on the field!

GENERAL/PERSONNEL

Players I don’t see practicing on Day 1 of camp: Mason Crosby Christian Watson Sammy Watkins Keisean Nixon Kylin Hill Jonathan Garvin Randy Ramsey Rasheed Walker David Bakhtiari Elgton Jenkins Robert Tonyan Malik Taylor Akial Byers.  2) Malik Taylor with the rehab group as well. Don’t think he had any injury designation. Herman

Takeaways from Gute's presser: -P. Taylor/Lowry/C. Jones/C. Brice returning from injury today -Sammy Watkins very short term injury -Watson longer but not long-term -No timetable on Bakhtiari per Gute. Mentions the seriousness of the injury. Says he had another procedure in the offseason. "We are cautiously optimistic."-Not looking to add WR -Elgton is ahead of schedule.  The sky is the limit for Allen Lazard.  No concern that Bakhtiari will never be back, per Gute.  Herman [See below on Jenkins]

Packers released LB Caliph Brice following Day 1 of camp.  Schneidman [Just returned from injury.]

Elgton Jenkins doing some running with the rehab group.  Herman  [There is video.  I looks like a sprint with Jenkins running hard.  If I didn't know he is coming off an ACL, I'd think he was fine.  Same thing happened last year with video of Bakh working out, though.  Randy Ramsey was up next, but the video doesn't show him running.  Here is a link to Andy Herman's twitter page https://twitter.com/AndyHermanNFL TGR]

Asked Aaron Rodgers if it was good having Allen Lazard back after missing all offseason: “Yeah, I mean, it’s always tough going from Hall of Famer to Hall of Famer.”  Ryan Wood

Bakhtiari doesn’t have timeline for his return, but he sounds optimistic about recovery process from torn ACL despite landing on PUP. “I do feel really good,” he said. “I feel normal.” He says this is the first time since tearing ACL his knee has felt normal.  2) David Bakhtiari made an important clarification about what exactly he's recovering from: "It's not really an ACL issue. That's been, actually, a long time ago. We put that chapter to bed. There's just other issues we're navigating around, things I'm learning."  3) David Balhtiari won’t say whether he regrets playing in Detroit last season, but his knee did not feel 100% entering that game. Asked him if he could have played in the playoffs had he not taken snaps in Detroit, but he won’t go there. “It’s an ‘if’ question,” he said. 4) David Bakhtiari said the third procedure on his knee came shortly before OTAs, forcing him to miss this offseason. 5) Brian Gutekunst says David Bakhtiari had another procedure this offseason after a setback in Detroit. He calls it a "very significant injury, much more than an ACL," but says there is no concern Bakhtiari will play again.Wood  [Tweet 2 is interesting but it didn't make things clearer.  Tweet 4 is very interesting.  That makes the procedure prior to OTAs sound like it wsa perhaps a scope, but tweet 5 is different in tone.  I don't know.  That doesn't mean Bakh won't take longer.  It is something.  TGR]

A reminder about PUP. If Bakhtiari stays on PUP during camp, he's eligible to start the regular season on PUP. Only he no longer would have to sit out a minimum of 6 weeks. That number has been trimmed to 4, so in that case he could start practicing a month into the season.   Silverstein [I have to check in order to verify that PUP is only 4 games.  Maybe they reached a side agreement with the union on that, but I thought it was still 6 games.  TGR]

Preston Smith indicated last year he accepted the pay cut in part to play with 12. Jarran Reed told me this offseason 12 was a big draw. And he isn’t the only QB with that pull. Look at the flock of free agents that follows Tom Brady.  Wood

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

Now that was a nice ball and read from Love. Hit Toure low but it was exactly where it needed to be. Nice rep from 10.  2) Love late to Amari but he makes the catch with Vernon Scott nearby. Herman

Since he arrived, Matt LaFleur has implored Jordan Love to “let it rip” out of his hand. He just threw maybe hardest ball we’ve seen from him to Amari Rodgers, perfect pass low over middle to avoid hit from a DB. Good catch from Rodgers, but exactly what LaFleur wants from Love.  Wood

Romeo Doubs just mossed Kabion Ento on a jump ball from Etling. Very big wow play from 87. 2) Holy shit what a catch from Lazard downfield against Amos. Rodgers put one deep and up for grabs and Lazard skied and held on after coming down hard. These WRs are impressing early.  3) Gary just beasted Royce Newman but Rodgers chucks deep on a beautiful route and catch by Winfree. First wow play of camp.  4) Danny Davis with the leaping catch from Love in the mof to end team drills. Herman

Romeo Doubs just went up on the left sideline and caught a Jordan Love fade pass over 6-1 CB Kabion Ento’s head. Impressive play from the fourth-round rookie.  Wood [Same as the Herman "Mossed" tweet above]

Winfree has had two nice offseasons in GB. Hamstring kept him out of preseason last year. Getting early work with the ones. Juwann Winfree plays through contact and makes a nice downfield snag from Rodgers to open second team period. Gary had a pressure on the play.    Hodkiewicz

First deep completion of camp is from Rodgers to Juwann Winfree down the right sideline. Contested catch with Eric Stokes in coverage. Drew a nice cheer from the crowd.  Schneidman  [Okay, maybe I overhyping this play and player.  I like Winfree.]

Matt LaFleur emphasizes importance of Christian Watson being activated from PUP as quickly as possible, but no details on when that might be: "I don't have a whole lot of expectation on when he'll get caught up to speed."  2)  Matt LaFleur with a money quote when asked about Sammy Watkins' timeline to return: "I don't pay attention to timelines anymore. When they're cleared, they're cleared." He pauses. "With no expectation, comes no expectation."  Wood

First team period of camp ends with Danny Davis going vertical to make a nice grab on a PA rollout from Love.  Hodkiewicz

Gutekunst said that they are not in the market for a veteran receiver. "There's not a lot out there," he said. He said he's very high on the guys that he has on the roster and it's more likely that they will have better options at the end of camp. He said they continue to monitor.  Silverstein

Rapoport reports that Julio Jones signed with Tamp Bay for $6M, $8M maximum.  Ian Rapoport  [That's out of GB's price range short of being in love with the player. TGR]

RUNNING BACKS:

BJ Baylor with some juice up the middle on a big run.  2)Ok Tyler Goodson. Hell of a cut and some juice!!! Nice job by Tom & Menet blocking.  Herman

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Starting OL in walkthroughs: Yosh Nijman, Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, Jake Hanson, Royce Newman. Expect that to be a work in progress, though interesting Nijman is now getting LT reps with Aaron Rodgers.  Wood

No sign of a starting OL rotation yet - it’s been Hanson at RG and Newman at RT.  2) #2 OL Tom - Menet - Hanson - Rhyan - CVL.  Zach Tom at LT with the 2’s.  3) Gary just beasted Royce Newman but Rodgers chucks deep on a beautiful route, and catch by Winfree. First wow play of camp. 4) Ok Tyler Goodson. Hell of a cut and some juice!!! Nice job by Tom & Menet blocking.  Herman

Josh Myers with a shotgun snap to Aaron Rodgers before the QB was ready for it. Rodgers caught it but calmly waved his hands after the play as if to say “settle down.” A little amped on Day 1.  Wood

Jake Hanson is a name that wasn’t often discussed during off-season but may be the best fit to fill that ever important Lucas Patrick position - guard who could be top reserve at center.  2) Zach Tom already getting work at left tackle and now left guard.  Hodkiewicz

Matt LaFleur says it will be a "fluid situation" this camp for rookie OLs Sean Rhyan and Zach Tom because guard and tackle: "You want them to compete for a position, it's just how much time are you devoting to cross training those guys."  Wood

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Starting defense: Reed - Slaton - Clark Campbell - Quay Jaire - Stokes Amos - Savage.  [TGR: I assume it would be Preston Smith and Rashan Gary as the OLBs]

Kenny Clark at 3-tech with Dean Lowry not practicing during offseason. Lowry is back, and Clark has slid back inside with Jarran Reed at 3 and Lowry at 5.  Wood

Slaton with a nice quick pressure inside.  Herman

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

Toure with a catch from Etling. Prob should have been broken up by Kabion (Ento).  2) Ja (Alexander) gets a couple reps off and it’s Shemar as next man up at CB.  3) Rasul comes in with the nickel and plays the slot. Herman

Rasul Douglas in the slot with starting defense, but he’s getting perimeter reps on second team. Brian Gutekunst has said slot will be week to week. Might see a lot of Douglas in the slot, except vs. undersized, quick WRs. Jaire Alexander can handle those matchups.  Wood

LINEBACKERS:

Patrick Taylor with the first turnover of camp. He was running downfield and appeared to just lose the ball. Ty Summers fell on the fumble.  Wood

Ty Summers just punched the ball out from Patrick Taylor. Defense recovers for the first turnover of camp.  [So, perhaps Wood didn't see Summers punch it out.  No way to know.  TGR]  2) I’m almost positive Quay just called the play for the defense. Would be a very early big step for him.  3) Ooo, Quay with some sideline to sideline juice to make the “tackle” on Jones on an outside run.  Herman

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Packers K Mason Crosby said he had his right knee scoped two weeks ago. He’s never missed a preseason game before and said “having a couple of those off isn’t going to hurt.”  Demovsky  [So, no training camp battle this year.]

Matt LaFleur on new special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia's influence already: "I've learned more about special teams than I ever have in my life sitting in his meetings."  Wood

Coco (LS) gets first FG snaps.  Huber

Josh Myers and Tyler Davis the wings on field goals.  Herman

I chose to use a photo of Mason Crosby because I had not heard that he had arthroscopic surgery two weeks ago. I knew he had been placed on PUP (or was it NFI?) but not why.

The offensive line is going to be a work in progress. Guys are moving around and being cross-trained. How much cross-training for young guys - rookies and even for guys who made the team or were on the PS - is always a balancing act. GB seems to coach up these guys very well, so let's wait and see on things progress.

Lots of information on Bakhtiari. It sounded pretty good, then I read some that sounded less wonderful. Fingers crossed. I watched video of Bakh working out last TC. He looked pretty active but then was unable to play. Nice to see Jenkins sprinting a bit, but learning my lesson on managing expectations. Still, that he is running is better than sitting on the sidelines. It is probably a necessary step in the process. Happy to read that the team feels he is ahead of schedule. Again, keep expectations in check.

I was pulling for Ento. I hope he rebounds later in camp. He has a history of being pretty good in coverage.

Yeah, I like Winfree.

Quay Walker starting out looking good. That is a pick that really surprised me. I had him in the middle of the second round or later. I hope to get to practice a couple of times this year, in part to watch him in particular.

Not surprised Clark moved back inside in certain situations. Doesn't mean it will continue. I wondered when I saw the picture of Clark looking so svelte. I am looking for a jump from Slaton, so tidbits about him are interesting.

Local paper said that Bahk had a third procedure done on his injured knee in January of this year and it was not to repair any ACL damage. A procedure in January certainly explains why Bahk missed OTA's and is on the PUP list.

Bahk was also quoted as saying he expected to play this year (his knee is feeling much better) but would not put a timetable on his return. Doubt he will be available for the opener but he may return during the season. Better news than we had before (I think...) but still not good. The Packers will likely be missing their two best O-lineman when the season opens.

Guam, by my unofficial count, that's three "procedures" and at least 15 knee drains. To me, that sounds like a guy who maybe shouldn't be playing football anymore.

The Packer Brass keeps saying, "he'll play again, we're not worried, we're cautiously optimistic about the opener.". And I'm a guy who likes to believe the Packer Brass, and I'm generally an optimist, but I kind of feel some disconnect between what I'm hearing and what I'm NOT seeing, which is Bakhtiari lining up in practice.

Yeah, clearly some cause for concern. It sounds more like wishful thinking than real belief on the part of Packer management now. Given the cap hit however, the Packers have no choice but to ride out this year and see what happens. Thank God for UDFA Nijman!!!!

I'm pumped about the Packers being back on the field, and I greatly appreciate these reports of what's actually going on. Thanks!

I do wonder if the reason the Packers let MVS go to the Chiefs -- an apparent big mistake, in my opinion -- is that they have a high regard for Winfree and/or Taylor.
Although we took three wide receivers in the draft, it would seem to me important to have someone already on the roster, familiar with the team offense, who seems ready to take a step up.
Another player who may well fit that description is Amari Rodgers, although he may be in a slightly different category as a slot receiver. Winfree/Taylor would seem to be better matches to replace MVS.
With the rookies untested, and with the older veterans Watkins and Cobb susceptible to injury, I can't help but wonder if the Packers came into this training camp thinking they have a hidden gem in Winfree and/or Taylor.

As promised!

I put in two tweets about Amari, though they were about the same play sequence. Still, a bullet from Love thrown low to avoid a collision with the DB was caught by him. [They were not hitting in today's practice, so this is placing the throw where it needs to be in real life. Nice play, according to both Wood and Herman.

I think letting MVS walk was almost all about the salary cap/Money. I would guess that LaFleur is not terrified about the offense without MVS, and it could be due to the presence of Winfree or Taylor, but they also went out and drafted a huge speedy WR who can be a deep threat. I tried to imply that I like Winfree in the article. Taylor not so much as a WR, but I like him as a football player who can do STs and provide something at WR if necessary.

I've been reading a lot of support for Doubs. Early days yet but so far, so good in training camp from him.

I didn't put in any tweets about Lazard. He made some plays on 50/50 balls.

"LaFleur is not terrified about the offense without MVS, and it could be due to the presence of Winfree or Taylor, but they also went out and drafted a huge speedy WR who can be a deep threat."

In the end, the money they could have spent on MVS and DA went elsewhere and shored up other positions. In the cap era, you're always going to have holes, but the questions are "how many?" and "how big?" Since the decision on MVS was made after DA was gone and 6 weeks before the draft, it shows that they felt he was not a key piece....they could have easily panicked and overpaid for him, if they thought he was on the cusp of that or could develop more fully into it--after all, if they felt he could be a high-end WR, $10M/yr is a bargain in the current market.

" I tried to imply that I like Winfree in the article. Taylor not so much as a WR, "

The point that when Winfree was active, he got offensive snaps and Taylor didn't (well, Taylor just didn't get offensive snaps in general in 2021) says that the Packers agree with you.

Taylor really looked good in preseason last year (Winfree was out for most of it with a hamstring). Taylor does play mostly from the slot or over the middle though it seems. Taylor was out there in game one and then dumped for the previously cut EQ. Why? I’d love to know—the offensive parallel to Scott’s non use last year when Black was not holding up. Taylor was rehabbing yesterday.

That said, Winfree has looked to have real talent in healthy portions if pre seasons. It’s interesting that Rodgers made that comment too yesterday and emphasized his trust. Winfree may yet surprise many here.

Doubs is better than those who go off draft position think. I believe he will continue to show. Be happy with that pick.

Very happy with the implications of LaFleur’s comments on RB. A tacit acceptance that he had a lot to learn suggests he’s realized how much of a fiasco STs were and is listening. It also emphasizes that RB is influencing and listened to and that he is being long absent knowledge to STs.

Not against Winfree but I think he has two fumbles in the few times he has had the ball in a real game. He looks like he brings a lot to the table but WR fumbles are killers as they almost always end up in the other team’s hands. That being said I think that’s something that can be corrected

Swish,
Many people not overly fond of MVS, but I too questioned the wisdom of letting him go. I understand the cap dynamics but MVS has been developing and growing as a WR and just now entering his prime. I understand why Adam's left but was actually more upset that MVS wasn't retained mainly because of the age difference.

It seems likely Adams is leaving behind his prime, while MVS is entering it.
Yet, MVS seems a bargain at $10 million compared to Adams at $28 million.
After Adams left the Packers, it seemed urgent to keep MVS as one of only two experienced wide receivers on the roster to go along with Lazard.
Yes, there's a lot of exciting young talent at the position, but it's unproven; and there's a couple of intriguing vets, but they're question marks.
Already, two of the young guys (Watson, Taylor) and one of the vets (Watkins) are sidelined with injuries.
So, parting with MVS in what is supposed to be a run to the Super Bowl seems silly.
However, if the Packers think they have something good in Winfree as a starter, that may set things aright.

I think the significant thing about Winfree’s catch yesterday was that he was able to get behind Stokes. That takes some quickness.

I think they view Doubs as a true deep threat. Gute has implied they think him significantly faster than his pro day time recorded while finishing recovery from injury. Watson also has similar speed of course. Watkins had it too.

Not sure how I missed this, but here is Gute on Christian Watson, who had a procedure done over the off-season:

“One of those things to come out of OTAs and there was kind of a thought process, ‘do we want to push through the season and finish this after the (2022) season or go ahead and do it now?’ and we just did it now. He’ll miss a little bit of time here in camp but it’s nothing long-term.”

“We’re not gonna put any timelines on it. He’s a young player, when we invest what we invested in Christian, we’re obviously looking out for the long term, we always do. He’s a young player who’s got a big career ahead of him so we want to make sure we protect that. It’ll really be how he responds through the rehab and as soon as he’s ready we’ll get him out there.”

So, Watkins is very short term, and Watson is Longer but not long-term. So, IDK. I hope it is just a week or so, because missing all or most of TC for a raw rookie WR sounds like something that might have consequences for his rookie season.

"".....when we invest.......we're obviously looking out for the long term".

This is why we don't trade/cut guys like Dillon, Amari, Love, MVS, Deguara, etc after an uneventful rookie year. They are looking out for the future.

Teams rarely cut higher draft picks. They will do, however, if the player just doesn’t show what they anticipated or simply is consistently outplayed. Gute will keep upside over draft status if the team are convinced. That’s how it should be. We’re it not, we would not have Lazard and we’d never have had a Driver.

I think we perhaps overestimate what the team expects from Watson this year. I read earlier comments from Rodgers as supporting the fact that he’s going to take time. Hopefully the plan is a limited set of plays/routes to get him the ball. In which case the learning curve will be manageable if he’s back in a few weeks.

Is it possible that Watson begins the season on PUP? Frees up an extra receiver on the initial roster and my favorites are Lazard, Cobb, Watkins, Winfree, Rogers & Doubs.

Nice job, as always TGR! As I'm far-far away from Wisconsin those reports you are doing is only info I can get about Packers TC...

Gutekunst press conference / David Bakhtiari:
This news about procedure on David's knee before OTAs is very, very good news. It shows that they found the reason of additional liquid in his knee and solving it (or they solved it!). My main concern with the situation was that there was not clear cause why liquid is pouring out his to knee. If you do not know the cause, you can not fix the problem. So, I expect David back at some moment in the TC or during the season.

QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:

It is nice to read that Jordan Love showed progress. I connect that progress with work of Tom Clements. As this is just the beginning, It will be interesting to watch further development, or not development of the young fellow. We must not forget that Tom Clements work helped AR to become what he is today.

It looks like many posters here who was pointing out Romeo Doubs as sleeper was right, as looks like Juwan Winfree continuous to have excellent preseason. I hope this year it translate to the games. I somewhat supports him.

By your report it looks like Amari Rodgers also had very good first day of TC. Hopes for him to translate that to the real game field.

RUNNING BACKS:

It looks like there will be fearsome battle for the position of the 3rd RB.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

Nothing to say here. Just to confirm that it is clear Packers knows how to develop top OL guys, no matter which position they are playing.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:

It looks like Slaton is catching the speed of the game. The rest of the DL (rookies) first should watch seasoned guys to easier understand what is expecting from them.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

Nothing what we weren't expected. Douglas in the slot and Jaire to fill the role in specific situation. 4th in the line SJC. I do not see Kevin King signing, barring the injury of some of the top 3 DB.

LINEBACKERS:

Quay was surprise for many when Packers picked him with their 1st pick. Looks like he justifies why. Another bubble player (Summers) with some good play.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Maybe last season problems was product of the Mason's knee health. I hope he will be ready late in the camp so all of us would be able to see if Mason lost his strength or that injury issue was the cause (together with inconsistent snaps and holding).

Interesting choice of the wings on FGs.

All together good fist TC practice for many young players. Hope it will continue and it will translate to season...

This is the year Jordan Love HAS to translate potential to talent on the field. We know he has the talent and a strong arm, but now he has to show leadership, confidence, control of the offense all while protecting the ball. There are many things I'm watching for coming out of camp but nothing more important than hearing Love is tearing up the defense & having an excellent camp. He may be back-up to one of the best QB's ever but if the Packers have another good QB on their hands we are set at the most important position on the field for another 10-15 years. The Packer train will not slow down a bit once Rodgers calls it quits should Love be the real deal.

Agree. With many here comparing Love to Rodgers's first three seasons this is the preseason that Love, as did Rodgers, Love needs to convince/show the FO that they can make the move at QB for the future. The 5th year option will be due next offseason and with that also comes a new contract and paying both Rodgers and Love is not in the realm of sanity as one must go. This preseason of Love must close the book on one or the other, as time is running out for Love to take over and Rodgers to get the Packers and fans another SB.

I’d just like to emphasize my gratitude for you undertaking this task. This is what I look forward to in camp, a textual review of practices.

Podcasts are too much of a pain to review and not always appropriate to access. Along with Al’s mindset and Dusty’s educational efforts, this will be one of the key reasons for being here along with the discussions it provokes.

PS. A question to Al. Is there any way that these pieces can avoid being immediately buried under a deluge of pod casts or do I just have to dig down in the hope that there is one (something that often happens with your mindset piece too)? These are the pieces that get the overwhelming majority of comments after all.
