Sad news for a team that really struggled against the run. And we have Lynch and Charles the next few weeks.

Palmer and more importantly Jake Ryan better be ready to step up. I think Ryan is the starter sooner rather than later.

Before everyone freaks out about the situation this puts us in please remember:

1. We will be no worse off than last year with BradHawkJolina.
2. This year's draft had zero inside linebackers where we were drafting in the first round, and I think we got one of the better ones in Jake Ryan. I'm a Mich fan, and this guy was always around the ball.
3. There are no free agents that were available that we could have had over the offseason. And if you think there were, then name them and then tell us what signing them would have done to our cap.
4. Palmer will be serviceable. Especially once he has another hand.
5. Mathews playing inside for most of the year is okay with me. Why restrict that dude to one side of the field.
6. More jumbo packages?
7. Hope this Barrington thing is absolutely a rumor.

Yep. I'm generally a stick-with-our-guys kind of person, but the one rumor that was out there that intrigued me was that Mychal Kendricks was available for a second-round pick. If that was true, I would have been up for that.

"2. This year's draft had zero inside linebackers where we were drafting in the first round"

Stephone.
Anthony.

A cb in the first 2 rounds was sensible.
2 cb's in the first 2 rounds was overkill.

Anthony/Rollins would have been just fine.

Drafting Randall was a mistake.

Dawson was available in the 3rd, fwiw. I might guess that TT didn't like something about Dawson (character or field, whatever); perhaps he felt he had enough in Barrington and Palmer, + Ryan, and hoped Bradford, etc. would show something, and that Montgomery was too intriguing to pass on. If TT passed on Dawson due to character, I have to support that decision since I am not there to interview/investigate Dawson.

Just what we need - another "serviceable linebacker" trying to stop the run or cover. Does Hawk still want to return to GB?

Fawk!

Y'all think the middle was soft...I think it's going to get worse.

UNLESS the D-Line gets better and better. It's not impossible, but man, that might be asking for too much with this group. We shall see.

I know 1 thing, the 2-4-5 (mostly for passing) HAS to get more out of the 2 DL whoever is playing.

Raji should not play in the nickel. I'd suggest Daniels and Datone/Peppers, maybe Pennel or Gaston at this point. The 2 DLs in nickel need to have non-stop motors as well.

Barrington, Schmarrington. It's a cold thing to say, but he's not much of a loss... ordinary against the run and a disaster in coverage. There are plenty of Barringtons out there looking for a job.

It's time to see what Jake Ryan can do.

Alex Marvez tweeted that the Barrington news was a "big blow". Uh yeah, not so much.

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer to have the guy the Packers thought was their best ILB outside Matthews. But I just can't say anything but "Next man up" over this news. Maybe throw in some well wishes for Barrington on the road to recovery.

Based on his pre-season work and his practices, I am not looking forward to Jake Ryan inside. At lease Hawk had the smarts. Ryan is too green and unproven to put him in the line of fire in the next two weeks. He would be cannon fodder

No need to worry - we got the funny one (HAHA) to plug the holes. Ted - stubborn as a mule - Thompson refused to draft a top ILB the last few years despite obvious need. Looks like it will prove to be our achilles heel for this season. Reminds me of years with no S, years with no back-up QB, years with no OL, years with no RB etc.

Would have been worth giving up next year's #1 to get UCLA LB in R2 this year. Instead, he goes to Vikes and we settle for a 4th rounder from Michigan who looks OK but not the impact player we needed. So we move CMIII inside. And now we have a 6th rounder (Palmer) and a rookie 4th rounder (Ryan) to stop the run and cover the short middle. Oh boy!

I asked this question before the season started...

Will having your best interior run-stopper, best edge pass rusher, and best coverage linebacker all being the same guy work?

The problem isn't moving CMIII inside (he's really good there), the problem is taking him away from the outside. I have zero faith in Neal or Perry or Mulumba or Elliott.

Palmer/Ryan... yikes.

In the end, I think the team is better off with more from the OLB group than the ILB group. My faith in the backup OLB group is above zero, maybe not by a lot but still above zero, and my faith in the ILB group is not. Moving Matthews inside is the vehicle to get there.

Not only is the overall strengthened but Matthews is thriving with all the movement. He's been fantastic since it started. He might have had his best half season at the end of 2014. And he sure came up huge on Sunday.

I don't think Clay is the best covering LB on the team. But nevermind that.

I have faith in Elliot. Mulumba hasn't been given a chance this season (yet), but he can't be worse than Neal/Perry.

I agree with the Palmer/Ryan combo causing worry. I don't think either one of them are thumpers.

IR for Barrington to make room for datone for now. Cut whoever was scheduled to be cut for datone, and bring in Bradford or Vaughters from PS for depth. Also, Mason Foster is out there and wouldnt cost much more than vet minimum if at all more. Gotta have more than Ryan, Palmer, and Matthews at ILB, right?

Palmer has played exactly one game as a ILB. Just how good IS Nate Palmer, Green Machine?

I seem to remember an awful lot of people were sure the Packers were going down the shitter when Brett Favre's train left the station, because the only guy we had to play QB was the inexperienced Aaron Rodgers.

Let's see what we've got in Palmer. He was turning heads in training camp before fracturing his hand. You never know, he just might be pretty good.

.....and those fall off the NFL trees. What a shame. TT may be respected because of his D&D philosophy but I don't know any GM who sticks to that philosophy religiously like TT. Now, I may be dumping on the wrong guy. Maybe McFatty and his hand picked coaches have told TT what we have at ILB in house will be enough to stop the bleeding.
Look at what Denver has on defence in spite of their explosive offence, Defence won the game for them when Peyton had a bad day last Sunday..

Not asking Foster to be Ray Lewis. Neither would Bradford, Vaughters, or even D Bishop. Its called DEPTH. GB is one more ILB injury from having a real big problem.

The depth (Vaughters and Bradford) can stay on the PS for now. If someone tries to sign either off the PS, I'd guess they'd let TT know and he can then decide whether to promote them.

No one knows what TT will do, but at this point Palmer hasn't yet proven he can be an effective run-stopping ILB and it's too early to push Ryan on to the front line. The only option I see is to sign Mason Foster and coach-up Ryan.

Mason Foster has the physicalness and versatility we need. He can be a run-stopper and play in coverage. Right now the only LB we have that can do both is Matthews.

Packers just announced they activated Datone Jones and put Barrington on IR. So if they want another ILB, they'll have to make a cut now.

Their in-house PS call up option is Carl Bradford, so I'm hoping they take a good look at who is on the street, if they decide to go that route.

Before I start, let me say that I don't know ANYTHING about this Foster guy.

I agree with both sides here.

Read this one though:
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6601/mason-foster

To be clear, the agree part is the side of me not wanting to see any of our LBs on the practice team play any Regular Season snaps. Maybe we do need to look outside for ILB help.Maybe we don't. But I do know the help isn't on the Practice Squad.

It's always good to have more information. But in this Rotoworld article they say Foster is "...a two-down banger..." Yet is 2013 he had 3 interceptions and 7 passes defensed. Those are great coverage stats for a LB and I would be thrilled if we could get a similar production out of any one of our LBs.

I'd like to see some film on him. It's hard to judge a guy off stats when you've (I'm not talking about you) never watched him play.

Thanks for posting those videos. You're right, highlight videos are hard to judge by but three things do jump out:
1) The dude has ball skills.
2) He has some speed.
3) He has some pop.

Other than Clay Matthews, show me another ILB on the Packers who has an NFL highlight video as good as Foster. He's only 26 and should be in his prime now.

And you're right about another thing. TT and his staff will do their due diligence. If they don't sign Foster, I'm sure they will have a good reason.

Difference is Jones KNOWS the Packers offense and can step in immediately and contribute. Was Foster in anyone's training camp? Pre season? That story was dated in march. By the time he learns enough to contribute it'll be wk 8 or so. Its not like he can step in and play immediately.

From the article Dra linked "struggled mightily for the Bucs last season. He's a two-down banger, and not a particularly good one."

Doesn't sound like he's worth it to me. A 2 down ILB and not a particularly good one? I'll pass thanks!

Clay has such a hybrid role hard to call him a "mlb". So palmer and Jake the snake are what's left. Not to say they both can't end up being good, but it's sooooo risky. That's 2 players that = 2 question marks....

First off, the article about Foster is worth a read and definitely complimentary towards Foster. I don't care if he is not all that, the Packers need to take a hard look at the guy and give him a "prove it" contract if he looks better than any of the ILBs currently on the roster.

Why not next man up? Because that only works so much. Any philosophy taken to its extreme becomes crazy, and right now, the ILB position is thin, thin, thin. Isn't the whole point of the 3-4 to set your LBs up to make the plays? Well what do you do with a 3-4 D that has not much at the LB position? And we all know that this team is THAT close to winning a Super Bowl, and this team was in the top 3 for cap space available last I heard.

Is losing Barrington the end of the world? No. Is he JAG? Probably. Problem is, the Packers are running out of JAGs and digging into developmental players. Maybe one of them will be ready for prime time, but with one more injury even that slim hope could be snuffed out. Time to make a move if a move is available.
