Packers' Front Seven Starts Strong, Finishes Stronger

It may be time to start looking at the defensive front residing in Green Bay as a force to be reckoned with if you're an opposing offensive coordinator.

Passing the eye test with flying colors, the Packers' defensive line has performed beyond expectations in their four-game trial run. Despite being gifted with injuries to the opposing starting running backs of the teams they've matched up against thus far, there hasn't been a running back to surpass 39 yards since T.J. Yeldon did it in week one's scorching win.

Chris Ivory missed that game, but the Packers slowed down Adrian Peterson the following week in Minnesota, who has been the bane of their existence in recent years. Toss in a Lions' running game in week three that lacked the presence of Ameer Abdullah, and rightfully, some skeptics may remain. Going into week five, the Giants were without Rashad Jennings and Shane Vereen.

Nevertheless, for the fourth straight game, the Packers shut down the enemy's ground plans and put heavy pressure on Eli Manning in the process. It took said pressure applied by Nick Perry, Clay Matthews and co. to force Manning to get rid of the ball faster than he would typically want to, making a depleted secondary's job a whole lot easier.

The Giants didn't abandon the run game in the second half in last night's 23-16 win, either. In fact, they ran the ball eight times in comparison to the first half's seven, but to no avail. The Packers' front seven bottled up Bobby Rainey, Orleans Darkwa and other ball-carriers to just 13 yards on those seven carries. The 1.8 yards the Packers allowed on the ground in the first half matched up perfectly with the 1.8 average amount of rushing yards they were allowing coming in — which was still miles ahead of the league average.

From a graphic supplied by ESPN's Rob Demovsky, the Packers have allowed 171 rushing yards through their first four games. Why is this relevant?

In the Super Bowl era, only the 1995 49ers allowed fewer rushing yards through a four-game stretch. The 2016 Packers surpassed the 2000 Ravens and 1990 Giants by double-digits. A testament to how well this group has performed in their brief audition.

In addition, the rapid-playing talents of the edge-rushers and brute force of the interior defensive linemen have accumulated 33 tackles for a loss of yards. Matthews, who has had at least one sack in each of the three games he's played in when healthy this season, is clearly embracing his natural role on the outside. Meanwhile, Perry has accounted for 4.5 of the defense's 14 total sacks this season, already toppling his best season in terms of getting to the opposing quarterback. He had four in 11 games in 2013.

It may just be in teams' best interests to avoid the heart of this menacing defensive front, who have allowed an average of 1.72 yards per carry when tailbacks run beside the center and between the guards.  After week five, the Packers' average rushing yards allowed bumped up slightly to 42.8, still 60.2 yards below the league average, which is 103. A convincing stat that doesn't speak enough volume to how efficient they've been as a unit up front.

They'll face possibly their biggest test so far when the NFL's rushing leader in Ezekiel Elliott comes to Lambeau Field. A hope is that the sights and illustrious history the stadium holds will deter Dallas' rookie sensation, but don't put your money on it.

Should Sam Shields and Damarious Randall come back, who's to say this can't become one of the best defense if not THE best defense in the NFL?

The offense seems to be working just fine except for Aaron. So many if's, but they're not far fetched to believe can happen.

Give it some time people, Packers may be a wrecking ball yet.

If the Pack's D is going to be among the elite rather than just good, it has to stay aggressive all the time.

Seattle, Denver, and now Minnesota don't let up.

The talent is there to be elite along the front 7 and even safety. If Shields can return the CBs can be serviceable.

But Dom can't get passive either, that is not the way elite defenses play.

I agree, Dom needs to be aggressive. Our coverage was too soft against New York, given the pressure we were generating up front. Had Eli not blown several throws ( some under pressure, some not), we would have lost.

"Going into week five, the Giants were without Rashad Jennings and Chris Ivory."

They'll continue to be without the services of Chris Ivory for some time...as he plays for the Jags, and the Jets last season. ;)

The Cowboys will try to do to the Packers what the Packers did to the Giants. Maintain time consuming drives and keep Rodgers & Co. on the sidelines. Our DL will need to keep winning at the LOS and if they can do that early in the game and if the offense can build an early lead we can minimize the impact of the Dallas run game. Their OL has been dominating lately so our front 7 is in for their biggest challenge to date. We should have Pennel and Shields back for this game to solidify our defense even further. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

It will be interesting to see what we do with Pennel this week. We have gotten a one week roster exemption for Pennel (and Goodson), but we could activate him in time for the Dallas game. It may be that Pennel needs more than this week to get back into football shape and would be better off if activated in time for week 6. TT probably makes this decision on Saturday.

Goodson is also eligible for reinstatement. Some suggest that he could improve the kick and punt coverage teams. Guess the gunners didn't look to me to be the problem. We have 11 DBs (assuming Banjo's injury isn't serious). I don't view Goodson as better than any of them, so I'd just cut Goodson.

Candidates to make room for Pennel/Goodson: Price, Ringo, Callahan, Abby. [I love Abby and advocate giving him 15 real snaps a game, but it appears that the coaches don't value him as a PR or WR.]

It is conceivable that GB promotes Jackson or finds a street FA RB, and cuts Starks (highly unlikely) or needs another roster spot.

I agree with you regarding Abby. Unfortunatelly, all what was going on shows that is huge chance to cut Abby from their roster. I hope for Abby to find some other team immediately after cut and I think that may be mistake from front office...

My fear is Abby would go sign with a team like New England and catch 75 passes a year. Bill B is the Master of taking a players strengths and using them to get the maximum results.

What would it tell you about McCarthy if that were to happen?

That he and his frigging 11 personnel heavily featuring Richard Rodgers and Davante Adams are too stubborn for their own good.

Man, MM is SO frustrating sometimes.

completely agree...

What i hate is he has something that works, and goes away from it.

First 2 drives, he mixed and matched personnel and drove the field easily. After that he went to more hurry up and 11 personnel and didn't do much.

My advice for McCarthy. Use all your weapons. Yes WR's 1-7. Use your FB more. Keep changing formations and looks. And stick with what is working until they figure out how to stop it.

I disagree in the sense that Belichick is a master at figuring out which players he needs to emphasize to get the job done in a given week...so Abby might not go there and catch 75 passes, but he might catch 40, but catch 8 in 3 or 4 weeks that are key to them winning those particular games.

Callahan's untouchable--too valuable. With Randall and Shields returning soon, Hawkins is a likely cut, along with Price or, shockingly, Abbrederis. I wouldn't bring back Goodson, but then, maybe he's just that good of a gunner.

I hope Abby doesn't get cut in the "make room for Pennel and Goodson" decisions. But with Abby not playing Sunday night, that could spell bye bye for him. Price or Callahan would be the other two choices. Goodson would be my choice to not bring back, then you could just let Price go, but since the Pack is thin at CB, this might be his saving grace. And special teams.

That question was brought up yesterday a quite a bit. 'Will Abbrederis get cut to put Pennel or Goodson on the 53'.
When McCarthy was asked what Abbrederis has to do to get on the field, to be honest, I really didn't like McCarthy's answer.

IMO, if they do its the wrong move.
First off if they want to put Pennel on the 53, they should just cut Price and put him back on the PS.
I hope they don't bring Goodson back. I am guessing they will based on what he does on special teams.

I hope Abbrederis doesn't get cut because I still feel he offers a lot to the team.

Callahan's far, far too valuable to cut. Not a chance.

With Shields and Randall returning soon, I'd look at Hawkins first, then Pennel, then Abbrederis.

I wouldn't bring Goodson back.

Callahan? Really? So the Packers cut him and try to resign him to the practice squad...someone else signs him. What do the Packers lose? They lose a developmental QB who they could easily replace. For the flash he showed in the preseason, his ceiling is likely that of a career backup. I don't think you risk much by trying to sneak him to the PS.

It is interesting to see difference between Vikings and Packers comparing their games against same opponent...
Vikings allows 339 total net yards, 78 (4,3 yards per carry) by rushing and 261 by passing. while Packers allows 219 total net yards, 43 (2,9 yards/carry) by rushing and 176 by passing.
Manning has QB rating of 63,29 with 0 TD and 1 INT against Viking and 78,15 with 1TD and 0 INT (but 1 FF lost). Contrary to that, Bradford had QBR of 101,85, while Aaron Rodgers had QBR 64,95.
Vikings were punting 6 times with net average 40,7 yards (2× in 20), while Packers were punting 4 times (0× in 20) with 35,0 net average...
Giants had possession 24:28 against Vikings and 23:22 against Packers.
Other data are similar...

Through the 1st 4 games the front 7 in what ever position makeup is on the field, has not performed this well since Gilbert Brown roamed the halls. As far as the Abby comments, major sports is littered with players that have moved on due to lack of playing, $$$$, attitude, whatever and have become viable contributors. The world is an imperfect place, screws fall out all the time.

Amazing what getting rid of Sam Barrington (slow), Nate Palmer (slow and small) Brad Jones (just bad) and AJ Hawk (maybe the slowest Packer LB ever) have done to this defense. For too long the weakness of this defense was the inability of the LBs to defend RBs out of the backfield and in general, lack of lateral speed. The former of which permanent defined in my memory as AJ Hawk chasing (insert RB here) down the sidelines after the completion of a shallow crossing route to the RB on 3rd and 7.
