Packers Daily Links: Tramon Williams Discusses Shoulder Injury

Tramon Williams addressed the way his shoulder injury has changed the way he plays the game. That and more in today's Daily Links...

The Packers are trying to protect cornerback Tramon Williams by playing in off coverage and avoiding as much contact as possible. "The idea is that if Williams can get through a couple of games without aggravating the injury, he will be at full strength soon," writes Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Williams is still breaking on the ball quickly and tackling when he has to, but the real Tramon Williams still hasn't come out." The question now is, will teams try to take advantage of that?

A blog post examining the same issue comes from JSOnline.

The back and forth between Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Falcons wide receiver Roddy White hasn't stopped. In the offseason White said the Falcons are better than the Packers, Rodgers responded to a question regarding that this week and now White has responded to Rodgers' response. “We didn’t give our best effort on that day,” White is quoted as saying by Packer Report. “They are a good football team. They are the champs. What can you say bad about those guys, they are 4-0. If he has to use that as motivation ... he’s been using that for the last three weeks. It is what it is.” White also said Rodgers was "reaching" to find motivation.

More on Aaron Rodgers and Roddy White comes from JSOnline and NFL.com.

The topic of "vision" and what it means to the running backs is examined by Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "The new goal, Starks said, is to make more defenders miss — which would lead to longer runs," writes Copeland. "He averages 4.7 yards per carry, but has just two runs of 20 yards or more." Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin went on to explain that they're hoping for more misses at the second and third levels.

Running back Ryan Grant is said to be at full strength in a blog post by Tyler Dunne of JSOnline. "Grant had another scan done recently and said there were no bad signs," writes Dunne. "He's hoping to pick up where he left off in Chicago where he rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries." He looks to be probable for the Atlanta game on Sunday, though the official status report will come later today.

The Packers have a good red zone defense, while their opponent this week has a good red zone offense. "Atlanta is 2-2 and ranks No. 16 in the league in scoring," writes Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette. But the Falcons are No. 8 in red-zone scoring (61.5 percent touchdowns) and have the talent to get better." Tight end Tony Gonzalez is featured in the article as one of the Falcons' red zone threats.

The Green Bay defense also has to be up to the challenge of stopping running back Michael Turner. "The second time around last year, the Packers did exactly that," writes Tyler Dunne. "They forced Turner to run horizontally, preventing him from gaining a head of steam. In a 20-17 win over Green Bay on Nov. 28, Turner rushed for 110 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. In the Falcons' 48-21 playoff loss - with Atlanta forced to abandon the run - he managed just 39 yards on 10 attempts."

The impact of linebacker Clay Matthews, who has just one sack this season, is dissected by Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. "(Frank) Zombo has spent each game on outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene’s hip in the Packers’ bench area, dissecting every play and taking notes on what Matthews and fellow starter Erik Walden do," writes Wilde. "And while Zombo understands how surprising it is that Matthews has just one sack after registering 23.5 over his first two NFL seasons en route to back-to-back Pro Bowl selections, he believes the number belies Matthews’ impact." Matthews' quarterback hits and tackles for a loss paint a little better picture of his value to the Packers defense.

More on Clay Matthews comes from the Associated Press and JSOnline.

Former Packers defensive back Tim Lewis, whose career was ended by a neck injury and is now an assistant coach at Atlanta, talks about Nick Collins' injury.

Articles are up at Packer Report on Marshall Newhouse, Greg Jennings, Packers in domes and NFL quarterbacks (subscription required).

Tight end Andrew Quarless remains out of practice. Injury reports are at PackersNews.com, ESPNMilwaukee.com and JSOnline.

Tight end Jermichael Finley is interviewed in a video at JSOnline.

The challenge of winning in Atlanta is written about at the Packers official website.

"Williams is still breaking on the ball quickly and tackling when he has to, but the real Tramon Williams still hasn't come out." The question now is, will teams try to take advantage of that?

If this was in fact the case, do you really think the Packers would let this story out, or is this in fact a planted story so Matty Ice thinks he can pick on Tramon on Sunday, with the Packers hoping for similar results to Ryan's end of the first half TD pass to Williams in the playoffs?

Let the mind games continue!

That's a good point, my guess is that Tramon is almost fully back to health and might be playing a little bit of 'possum.

On the other hand, with Shields tackling like a ... scratch that he's not exactly tackling at all ... and Burnett biting on play-action fakes and Woodson looking like he's maybe lost a step, is a healthy Tramon enough to cover up the warts that have suddenly erupted in the secondary?

I guess we'll find out.

I think the warts you talk about are almost entirely the result of the lack of pass rush. Asking guys to stay tight on receivers for 6 or 7 seconds is just not realistic.

I don't think this is a 'rope-a-dope' strategy from Williams or the Packers. I believe it's so obvious on film there's no harm in discussing it. It's not like giving away a game-plan. Still about exploiting match-ups.

Ok. So, I asked a question in the chat during the Broncos game to the effect: "Is it just me, or does Tramon look different compared to last year" A few people in the chat, and notably Corey Behnke, shot back: "It's just you". Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive but in context, it seemed like a slam. I wasn't trying to express an opinion about Tramon, as much as checking what I thought I might be seeing. So my response was "ok".

I know full well that Corey has far greater knowledge of the game than I have. But let me just say this, when Tom Silverstein is noticing the same thing, it's *NOT* just me. Aaron also mentioned that Tramon is giving 10 yard cushions this year that he didn't last year.

Corey, I get that you're defending your guy after he gave you the nice mention on twitter. But it's not just me, dude. He looked different. Perhaps you could back down a little bit on that thing that you (and Aaron) seem to enjoy: immediately slamming your fellow packer fans when you disagree with them.

(Bracing for the comments that I suspect are coming...)

Dullgeek,
I do in fact agree with you about Tramon but my goodness Corey must have really hurt your feelings. A week later and you are still crying yourself to sleep about a sarcastic remark that was made to you. I know I should not even be involved but what you posted just sounds pathetic!

Cheers!!!

Of course, if this wasn't intended as ironic, my response is that it's not the one comment. And I'm not crying myself to sleep. I just tire of the condescension that this site repeatedly throws at fellow Packers fans.

I like this site. It's got fantastic information and great discussions. A little less of the condescension would make it even better.

Holy sensitive Batman.

Dullgeek - it was a response in real time in a chat. Corey is a Packers fan and a huge Tramon fan. Of course he's going to back his boy. You can't take what is said in the heat of the moment as gospel.

Now, Corey still thinks Tramon is playing fine. I think he's playing well, but playing off the line, which is unusual. But watching it live, I had no issues with what he was doing. It was pretty much the same way he played Marshall in the Miami game last year.

As far as Tom's post - yes, he went back and watched the tape. That's different than writing a comment in a live chat during the game.

If you can't take a little pushback, I don't know what to say.

Thanks for the respectful response, Aaron. And I agree that I need to be able to take some pushback. At the same time, I'm trying to give you and Corey a little pushback too. You guys tend to be a bit condescending to your fellow fans. IMHO, less of that would be better.

That said, it's your site and I'm just a guest here. If nothing changes, I'll still be a fan of the Packers and cheeseheadtv.

It's like you haven't been long enough to notice how Corey is...

I agree with you regarding Tramon, BTW, but I'm not worried. The injury will heal, he'll get back to pressing receivers, which he's great at.

Why ask the question if you are going to get upset about the response? I don't think he was taking a shot at you, more so that he was just sticking up for Tramon.

I'm not going to lie. I've noticed on the live blogs lately any questioning of the team or players seems to be meet with what can only be considered personal attacks more so than actual discourse or counterpoints. Case in point was the Wynn "discussion" a couple weeks ago on PT. Not a single constructive comment as to why people felt Cow was wrong just twenty comments on how he was a douchebag and wasn't a real fan.

Wait, what?

Took you long enough and I don't disagree with your assessment. I've been a douchebag for years around here (and in life in general). ;)
Call be crazy (or a douchebag or not a real fan etc.) but I just feel that if someone disagrees with a point of view it's far more productive to explain why rather than resort to personal attacks and name calling.
Tons of really great people, POVs, and discussion on here and I love the site. We should all be above that kind of behavior. Save it for when ToddinMinnesota rears his ugly head again.

Seriously, I'd rather get a little knowledge, even if it comes with a little dig.
