Packers Daily Links: Rodgers Justifies Lack of Workouts

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers discussed the offseason while attending the American Century Championship golf tournament. That and more in today's Daily Links...

On the Packers calendar today is the Green and Gold Training Camp 2011 where Donald Driver and Jermichael Finley will be "working out" with kids aged 5-12 at Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison. The American Century Championship golf tournament continues as well with coverage on Versus...

While attending the American Century Championship golf tournament, quarterback Aaron Rodgers spoke to the media and answered more questions about the lack of workouts the Packers have had this offseason. “I think the biggest issue that we have in Green Bay is that nobody lives there,” Rodgers told reporter Steve Yingling. “I was talking to Tony Romo, and they have 80 percent of their guys living in Dallas. It’s really easy to get on guys’ cases than when you have guys living on all the coasts, south and north. It’s a little more difficult of a feat.” Rodgers and linebacker A.J. Hawk also discussed the opportunity they have to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Brandon Underwood appeared in Green Bay circuit court regarding his disorderly conduct charge yesterday, although his hearing was postponed to July 22. "Underwood, 25, appeared briefly by himself in Brown County Circuit Court to tell Court Commissioner Christopher Paquet that he has hired a lawyer but that his attorney won’t be available until next week," reports Paul Srubas of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The judge ordered a continuation of Underwood's $1,000 signature bond.

Packers President Mark Murphy took part in the NFL's labor negotiations for a second straight day on Friday. "After meeting for almost 15 hours Thursday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, NFL Players Association chief DeMaurice Smith, players and owners were back at the negotiating table Friday as they attempted to end the sport’s first work stoppage since 1987," according to Rachel Cohen of the Associated Press. A picture of Murphy arriving for yesterday's negotiations accompanies the article.

That's it in an abbreviated weekend version of the Packers Daily Links.

I was okay w/ the Packers not having group workouts til I read this crap...

“I think the biggest issue that we have in Green Bay is that nobody lives there,” Rodgers...“I was talking to Tony Romo, and they have 80 percent of their guys living in Dallas. It’s really easy to get on guys’ cases than when you have guys living on all the coasts, south and north...”

See Aaron they got these things called big jet airplanes, they go fast and can get people to far places in a hurry.

AR, Jones, Swain and Havner, are in CA, Green I think in OR, Jennings and Cobb made it to AZ for Fitzgerald's camp, DD and Finley in TX, Nelson in KS, Williams in Arkansas. Over a 3 month period I feel AR could have hosted a week get together for the skill position players: esp so the rookies could learn terminology, route running and build chemistry.
If AR had put out the word I'm sure most of the above and the rest of the skill guys(Q, Crab, Kuhn, Grant, Starks, Taylor, Flynn, Harrell, West, and Robinson) would have shown up.
If traveling was such a big deal they could have had another week camp in Michigan hosted by Jennings. The "we're not near each other" comes off as a lame excuse. You're suppose to be professionals, act like it.

I don't know how the team will ever recover. I mean, you were okay with it, and they were floating on air...but now...how will they cope?

When is this non issue going to go away? In a normal season no one gets together. The only thing that has been missed are the OTAs and most vets don't even go to those.

au contraire...not only OTA's but also rookie camp and mini camp.

Players make the biggest jump between their first and second year. So Starks, Quarless, and Crabtree could use anything to enhance their development.

Plus there must have been new wrinkles put in that Grant and Finley may not be aware of since they went on IR early in the season. Rodgers talked about studying at home during the season so he may have game tapes to go over w/ the players esp the rookies.

My biggest beef in all of this is AR saying distance was the biggest impediment of getting together...LAME!

And how exactly those could've been installed by a non-coach?

How exactly would Rodgers and co. bring the rookies up to speed on the playbook? How would they teach them those things?

Players can teach them some keys of the position, but not about how to play it, or about the playbook.

"When is this non issue going to go away?"

When the Packers are 3-0.

They do deserve our criticism on this one because, honestly, what have they done for us lately?

These informal workouts are 95% worthless. They make the fans feel good and they give the sportswriters something to write about, but I don't think the players get much out of them.

I agree that the rookie camps and OTAs can be useful, so it's a shame that those were cancelled. But every team was in the same boat.

People willing to jump on the first thing they can criticize, as usual. They are professionals, so if there was this dire need to get together, they would. Rodgers has done nothing but handle himself with class since being here. His conduct on and off the field is what you would hope for in a Packer leader. Good call Sammer, because while there are some benefits, this is a none issue. Our beef should be with the kids at the negotiating table that are bickering about how to split the money we give them, and other matters that are holding the season back. Not Rodgers speaking honestly about something none of us are in a position to criticize him about. It's always something...

Again I'll say it,MM stated, not implied, that he didn't like at all the players self coaching and training.

I would like to believe he carries the authority of deciding what they do even if they couldn't talk directly.
