Packers Daily Links: McCarthy Gets Emotional Speaking About Philbin

Head coach Mike McCarthy held back tears during yesterday's press conference. That and more in today's Daily Links....

Head coach Mike McCarthy got choked up during his Wednesday press conference, holding back tears and needing to pause and compose himself while speaking about offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. "In reality, the pause lasted eight seconds, and it said everything about how McCarthy and his team are handling the death of 21-year-old Michael Philbin, the son of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin who drowned early Sunday morning near the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus," writes Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. "Because for the normally unflappable McCarthy to break down like he did Wednesday afternoon, as the Packers returned to practice for the first time since Michael Philbin’s body was pulled from the Fox River Monday afternoon, it showed just how emotional the past few days have been." I would say McCarthy usually attempts to be even keeled, so yesterday was definitely a deviation from the norm in terms of the emotion he displayed.

Joe Philbin is on an indefinite leave of absence, and without him, the coaching staff has divided up his duties. "Normally, Philbin would have been the one standing in front of the offense in the meeting room to give the power-point presentation that highlights the themes for the week, and he normally would have been the one at practice running the offensive periods," reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Instead, McCarthy gave the main presentation at the meeting." The offensive assistant coaches agreed to split Philbin's responsibilities amongst themselves.

More on Joe Philbin's absence comes from Fox Sports Wisconsin and Packers official website.

The results of an autopsy released yesterday revealed Joe Philbin's son drowned. "Police said the initial autopsy did not reveal any signs of foul play, adding it would be several weeks before toxicology and other test results were available," according to the Associated Press.

More articles related to Joe Philbin come from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Press-Gazette and JSOnline.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings said he felt no pain as he practiced on Wednesday. "Jennings scaled back the rehab over the weekend, but was already feeling pretty good," writes Kareem Copeland at PackersNews.com. "Last week, he said the final hurdle was the mental one – gaining a trust that he could run, jump, cut and maneuver even with a defender pushing and pulling." Jennings was listed as a full participant in yesterday's practice.

The Packers don't seem bothered by the guarantees made by the New York Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul. "I heard it was bulletin-board material, but I don't know exactly what he said," linebacker Desmond Bishop is quoted as saying by Fox Sports Wisconsin. "Frankly, I don't care." I wouldn't have expected any other reaction from Packers players.

The Packers offensive line is the focus of an article by Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "On a scale of 1 to 10, the challenge the Packers offensive line faces Sunday against the New York Giants is a six, which was the number of times Rodgers was introduced to the turf at MetLife Stadium in the Packers' 38-35 victory Dec. 4," writes Silverstein. The Giants defensive line is deep and effective, not to mention healthy, which makes them a formidable bunch.
